01:00Hi, I'm Bruce Blitz, and welcome to Blitz on Cartooning.
01:08Now, today, I'd like to show you how to draw cartoon animals, and I'm sure that most cartoonists would agree that drawing cartoon animals is a blast, because animals go everywhere, and it's just funny to see them in human situations, thinking and reacting like we do.
01:20To draw cartoon animals is really easy.
01:42To draw cartoon animals is really easy. It's just a matter of starting with the same simple shapes that we do when we draw cartoon people. You ready?
01:48All right. Grab a pencil, and let's draw cartoons. Now, first, let's draw a cartoon horse. I'm going to start by laying out some simple shapes. That's his head.
01:59And I'm going to make a shape like that for his neck, and a big circle like that for his back end. And all we have to do is connect these shapes like that. And let's put in his legs.
02:11Now, let's have his back legs coming forward like that, with a triangle like that for his hooves, front legs going back, and a couple more triangles. And his tail will go out that way.
02:23Now, by the way, I'm using an HB pencil for this one. An HB refers to the softness of the lead. And an HB is about like a number two school pencil that we see every day.
02:34Okay. Now, let's go back and put some details in his face. Put some guidelines in. I'm going to wrap these guidelines around that shape as if it's a three-dimensional object, and it has roundness.
02:45Now, let's put in his eyes, two U's like that, like his eyes are down, and his eyebrows are up. It looks very self-satisfied. And a big dot like that for his nostril, and a line around the top of his nostril like that.
03:01And a big old smile, and a lower lip, and a chin, and a jaw.
03:08Let's put his ears in. Just two lines like that, up, down. And some loose lines like that for hair between them.
03:16And for his mane, which is sticking straight out because he's running real fast. Be loose, get that spontaneous look through your work.
03:23You don't want to get that tight look. Okay, now, let's continue on.
03:30And draw the back end. Let's darken in this a little bit. And have his back leg coming forward. And about halfway up, you make a bubble like that for his knee.
03:45And the other side, a bubble going back like that. Some hair. And his hoof. It would definitely behoof you to listen to this.
03:57All right. Sorry about that. And that's to his front legs. Going back like this. And more of those bubbles for his knees. Make them real funny.
04:09Now, actually, dogs run like this with their front legs going back. And the back legs coming forward like that.
04:21But this is a cartoon. And you can get away with things like this, even though a horse doesn't run this way.
04:24And so his tail goes off that way.
04:27All right. Now, I'm going to go back in with a marker or a pen. You can use a pen.
04:32Now, the marker selection is vast in art stores. So I suggest you go there and experiment as to which one you like best.
04:39There's different thicknesses and different flexibilities. And the selection is really endless.
04:46Now, what I'm doing is going right over my pencil lines with my marker and refining a little bit as I go.
04:55And you can do your pencil lines as tight as you want. Make many erasers if you want because get it as nice and clean.
05:04Or keep it loose. I like to keep it loose and then sort of ink my way into something clear.
05:13And you go on and on. Nice thick and thin line like that.
05:16Now, I'm not going to ink the whole thing in right now. I'm going to take my eraser, which is a kneaded rubber eraser,
05:21which is like a piece of clay, and erase some of these pencil lines. And see what happens?
05:25The pencil lines leave and the ink lines stay. And I'm going to show you a completed version of this horse running.
05:33Just because of time's sake. There it is. Look at that. Great.
05:43Now, let's add some cartoon effects and accessories.
05:45Now, cartoon effects and accessories are those little extra doodles around the drawing that really add punch to your drawing.
05:50Let's put a shadow in right about here. Looks like he's running off the page.
05:55And let's put a ground line in. Some sweat because he's running so fast. And of course, some speed lines like that.
06:05Like he's really covering some ground. Real loose. Like clouds of smoke. Some circles like he's kicking up dust.
06:15Some lines like that. Like he's reaching. Maybe a mountain in the background. Maybe put a little quick color into him.
06:22I'll put some green for the grass.
06:24Some blue in the background for some sky.
06:30A brown mountain. Let's make him a Mustang.
06:35And he's running to the corner mulch up with his other horse friends because he's a Mustang. And he must hang somewhere. I don't know.
06:45All right. Let's move on. Let me show you just how easy it is to take a simple circle and a triangle and turn it into a shark.
06:54Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water. Like an oval, really.
06:59And here's a triangle. And about three quarters of the way up that oval. Let's make a smile line like that and come around like that.
07:08Now take our eraser. Go in here and erase this line. And you see what you've created is the jaws of death here is what you have.
07:19Now I'm going to go finish this with my marker. Go direct here.
07:23A big circle right about there. And an eye looking downwards like that. And he's mean. So let's have his eyebrows going down.
07:33And let's thicken up this line a little bit. Come back around. Let's give him a fin.
07:41Back fin. Come around like this. Darken in this. A couple of lines like that where his smile goes up into his cheek. Darken all this in.
07:52Now for the main event. The teeth. And a tongue. And let's sort of put some black inside of his mouth.
08:02And this indicates that his head has turned a little bit.
08:09And let me put a little color into him real quickly. Take him a blue shark.
08:17Maybe a red tongue.
08:24Now. Even though that fish is by himself. He is not a lone shark. So let's add one more element to this drawing to make it expressing a funny idea.
08:31Which is what the definition of a cartoon is. Now. It's not going to be so funny for this little fish though.
08:39Start with a little diamond shape like that. And another triangle. And a circle up here. And a dot. And his eyebrows up. And we've got a real well-meaning little fish here with a smile on his mouth.
08:54And some fins. Some fins. A wavy line there. Some scales maybe. Some bubbles. Some bubbles up here. Maybe even a caption.
09:07And you can go back in as much detail as you like on this. Maybe. Maybe a line on the top like he's underwater.
09:14Maybe some brown or green on the bottom for the bottom of the ocean.
09:26It goes on and on. You can add as much detail as you like. But that's how you draw a funny shark.
09:30Oh. I've got a great one to draw. Let's draw a funny snake. And this is going to be a quickie.
09:36In fact, it's going to be so quick that I'm going to do a couple of them. And I'm going to show you something you can do to help your cartooning.
09:41Let's start with a shape like this for his head. Just like we did with the horse before.
09:45Now real loosely make these lines like that. Go up. Come back the same way. Don't even stop. Just keep on going.
09:53And that's your snake. Now let's put some detail in it. You just want to keep the momentum going.
09:58You know, if you make a mistake, it's no big deal. You start again. I start over tons and tons of times.
10:04Make a lot of erasing. A lot of changes. But that's how you learn. You just have to stick with it.
10:10And make him a rattlesnake up there. Remember this. If you even have a little bit of talent, but you practice hard,
10:16you'll do much better than a lazy person that has tons of talent.
10:19Okay. Let's go back and put some detail on his face now. Let's have him looking at us.
10:23Two circles. And this one here is a little bit behind, so you don't see the whole circle.
10:27Make his eyes half closed. Kind of looking at us real sneakily.
10:32There you go. And his eyebrows are down. Two dots for his nose.
10:38A big smile like that because he's sinister. And his tongue. And a sound effect.
10:44S, S, S. And that's how you spell that. And a lot of cartoonists usually leave out that center S.
10:53I don't understand it, but. All right. That's how you draw a snake.
10:57Now, let's draw another one. And I'm not going to put a whole lot of detail on the second one.
11:01But I just want to show you a little trick.
11:05There's the second snake. Okay. Let's put a face on him, though.
11:09Okay. Now, on this snake here, if we put that shadow line touching the bottom bumps of him like that, touching him.
11:17A couple of lines like this indicating he's slithering along. Not going very fast.
11:22But if we move down to this snake here and make that shadow with a little bit of space between, like that, with some speed lines,
11:29it looks like he's going real fast. Some sweat coming out of him.
11:35And look what just a little bit of space between the cartoon and the shadow does.
11:40Makes it look like it's running off the page.
11:42All right. Let's move on.
11:45Now, did you ever hear people say that people look like they're pets?
11:48Or is it the other way around?
11:50Well, it doesn't matter. Because on this show, we're out to prove that that is definitely true.
11:54And this is so much fun to do. You can draw along with me on this one.
11:57I'm going to draw with my marker.
11:59Let's take a shape like this, which is like a square.
12:04A little bit bent like that.
12:07Okay. Now, let's make another one down here.
12:11This is going to be a dog and his master.
12:14It's going to be a Scotty dog.
12:15Now, about three-quarters of the way up here, let's put a circle.
12:19And let's have him looking at us.
12:21So you make a dot like that with a little bit of white space there.
12:24Make that highlight.
12:25And he's a Scottish dog, so let's give him big, heavy eyebrows like that.
12:31And a bag under his eye.
12:33And about down here, let's just chop that off a little bit and make his nose.
12:37And sort of fluff it out a little bit as well.
12:40And leave some white space.
12:43And blacken all this in.
12:46Let's make a smile coming out of the bottom of his nose.
12:50Just like that.
12:52Some whiskers.
12:54And let's double that line.
12:57And let's give him a beard.
12:59Just like that.
13:01And some ears, which are just two loose lines like that with some funny hairs in the center.
13:07And here's his neck.
13:08And maybe some fur.
13:10And there he is, a Scotty dog.
13:12Now, let's move down to the bottom drawing and do his master.
13:16Which is really going to look exactly the same, except for a couple changes.
13:20Make that circle halfway up, a little bit more than halfway up.
13:23And have him looking at us.
13:25Just like that.
13:26And here's his heavy eyebrows.
13:29Now, we can't actually give him the same kind of nose.
13:32But we can sort of fake the action by doing one of these.
13:35Have his nose coming up.
13:37Put his nostril down here.
13:39And a line around the nostril.
13:41And by the way, the technical name, the medical name for that line around the nostril is the line around the nostril.
13:46I don't know.
13:47I don't know why they never named that.
13:49But let's put a goatee on him to match his dogs.
13:53And a smile can look the same.
13:56Whiskers can look the same.
13:58And now, we can't put the ears like that.
14:02But we can put hair sticking up like that to sort of simulate that same shape.
14:07And his realistic ear would be down here.
14:09And there it is.
14:11Dog and his master.
14:13Let's add one more element to this.
14:14Let's have a pipe coming from his mouth.
14:16Oh, from the dog's mouth.
14:19This is cartoon world, folks.
14:21There you go.
14:23A couple of dots like that, like this one.
14:25Ashes coming out.
14:27Cartoon effect and accessory.
14:30And there it is.
14:31This next was my favorite drawing to do of a dog and his master.
14:35And I'm going to use a gray marker just to make some shapes here.
14:38Let's start with a square that gets a little narrower at the top like that.
14:44That's for the dog.
14:46And this is for the master.
14:48That's all.
14:50Now, let's go in and put some detail in the dog's face.
14:54And it's going to be a bulldog.
14:56And they just have the greatest faces to draw because there's so much you can do with them.
15:00About three-quarters of the way up, let's put a square and blacken it in.
15:06That's his nose.
15:07Leave out a little white space.
15:08That's very important.
15:09And let's give him sort of a scowling smile like that.
15:12Like that.
15:13With his lip.
15:15And teeth.
15:19And jowls coming around like that.
15:21One on each side.
15:22And one around each side of his mouth.
15:24And a chin.
15:25And if you notice, I don't connect the lines.
15:27You don't have to do that.
15:28It just creates a little more interest in your cartoon when you don't make everything so perfect.
15:33Some dots like that for his whiskers.
15:35Now for his eyes.
15:36Watch this.
15:37An oval.
15:38That you don't finish on the bottom.
15:40And instead of dots for the eyes, let's make lines like that.
15:43And let's make them uneven like that.
15:45It makes it a little funnier if you stagger them.
15:47Let's have his eyebrows down because he's mad.
15:49And he's mad because he's got these funny-looking ears.
15:53I don't know why a bad dog like this has got such dainty ears, but he does.
15:58All right.
15:59Now let's put his maybe a collar in, which has spikes on it.
16:03Because he's a bulldog and it's a law you have to name a bulldog spike.
16:07Now let's put his body in like this.
16:09And let's make him bow-legged.
16:12Like that.
16:14And let's put his feet facing in.
16:16And you might see a little bit of his back leg in there.
16:19Maybe there's another one coming out the side.
16:21And that's all there is to it.
16:23Now let's go back and draw his master.
16:25All right.
16:26And he looks about the same as his master.
16:29Now we can't give the master a black nose like we couldn't before with the Scotty,
16:32but we can give him sort of a squarish pug with a couple of nostrils on the bottom like that.
16:36Same mouth and the same kind of lip.
16:40We can't give him pointy teeth, but we can give him human teeth like that.
16:44And we can give him jowls just like that.
16:49And a couple lines like that around his mouth.
16:52And here's his chin.
16:53Let's give him some whiskers.
16:56Same kind of shape for his eyes.
16:59And put his eyes in.
17:01Same eyebrow.
17:02So far it's pretty much the same.
17:04And we can't do the ears like that either, but we can simulate that same shape with this hair.
17:13Nice haircut.
17:15And that's why he's so mad.
17:18All right.
17:21All right.
17:22Now let's go back and put in his body.
17:23Now when you're drawing a heavy guy like this and you want to make him look real husky
17:27and you want to give him big shoulders,
17:29your natural tendency would be to make the shoulders coming out from here and just make them real big.
17:33But, you know, if you make them coming out of the ears like that,
17:37sort of like his head is slumping forward, he looks that much more husky.
17:42And let's make a V-shape coming out of his chin like that and his collar and his tie and his lapels.
17:54And let's put in his long arms.
17:59And his fist.
18:00Which this guy always has clenched.
18:07All right.
18:08And let's put his feet, which are also ball-legged just like his dogs.
18:10And his shoes are facing in.
18:12And that's about it.
18:16You can add as much detail as you like.
18:18But I love to draw this sketch.
18:20So much you can do with a bulldog's face.
18:25Okay.
18:26Let's move on.
18:27I've got a great thing to do.
18:28Let's draw an elephant.
18:29And this is so easy.
18:30All you have to do is draw a couple shapes.
18:34Watch this.
18:38One shape like this.
18:40Looks like a television screen.
18:43And a circle.
18:45Right about there.
18:46Now, if you can do that, you've got the rest of it just about made.
18:50Now, let's put his eyes in, which are going to be half circles like that.
18:53And here's his eyes.
18:57Eyebrows up.
18:58He's happy.
18:59Now, first, trunk.
19:00Real loose, just like we did the snake.
19:04Squiggly line.
19:05And just come back.
19:07All in one motion.
19:10And some lines within the trunk.
19:13And there's a smile from his mouth.
19:15His lower lip.
19:17What could be easier?
19:19And there's his chin.
19:21And now, let's put his ears in.
19:23Which are a shape like that.
19:24And on the bottom.
19:26Sort of squiggly line like that.
19:28And the other one, which is a little bit behind.
19:30You don't actually see the whole ear.
19:32And let's put some detail within the ear.
19:34There's his head.
19:35Now, let's go back into his body.
19:37Let's darken in this line.
19:38Come back around.
19:40And let's put his little tail.
19:41Look at that.
19:42A little tail like that.
19:43Elephants have very little tails.
19:46I have a sister, Adrian.
19:49He used to tell me stories when I was a little guy.
19:51About why elephants have little tails.
19:54And the reason is that when they were made, they used all the clay up, making the elephant.
20:00And all they had was a little bit left for the tail.
20:02And that's the reason why they have little tails.
20:04And yes, folks.
20:06After being raised on stories like that and others, I still managed to grow up fairly normal.
20:10What do you think about that?
20:11Let's go back in and put some more detail on him.
20:13How about a shadow underneath him?
20:14And if the light is coming in from the top, let's have some lines like this on the bottom indicate some sort of roundness, like the bottom's not getting some of the light.
20:24And that's it.
20:26There's a ground line behind it.
20:27And there's your funny elephant.
20:28Let's work our way through the jungle.
20:31Let's draw a monkey.
20:32Or a gorilla.
20:34Now for this, we're going to start with a peanut shape.
20:39Or that could be a guitar, too.
20:40All right, now, up high because monkeys, they don't have much forehead.
20:46So let's just put a couple circles in like that.
20:49And have his eyes kind of crossed.
20:53And his eyebrows are up sort of in a well-meaning way.
20:57Now for his nose, small nose, with nostrils kind of angled in like that.
21:03And this is what makes a gorilla look like a gorilla.
21:06And that's a long upper lip like that.
21:10And a smile like this.
21:12All the way around.
21:14And his lower lip like that.
21:16And his ears.
21:17The ears are also up high.
21:20And let's put those little squiggles inside.
21:23Like that, that we all have in our ears.
21:25And for hair.
21:27Funny hair.
21:28Going all different ways.
21:29Get real loose with it.
21:30Get that spontaneous look to your work.
21:31A couple of hairs coming out like that.
21:34And just like with that big guy with his dog,
21:36we're going to have his shoulders coming out above his chin.
21:41And that's it.
21:42Let's put some color into this fella.
21:44I'm going to use my chalks for this.
21:47All right, for the front part,
21:49let's use a little light peach like this.
21:52Put the color in real fast.
21:54And for his hair, let's use a little bit of brown.
21:58See? You don't want to just scrub color in.
22:00You want to kind of go along with the flow here.
22:03For shoulders.
22:06A little bit of red maybe for his lower lip.
22:09For one.
22:10Maybe for his cheeks.
22:13That's it.
22:14He's great.
22:15Let's put a little blue in his background.
22:16By putting a little blue in the background like this,
22:18it sort of makes your cartoon character appear to come forward.
22:21Bring him to the foreground and pop out a little bit more.
22:25And there it is.
22:27That drews come out, okay?
22:29Let's move on now to the king of beasts.
22:31The lion.
22:33And the lion is a great, great drawing to do.
22:36And we're going to start with a diamond shape.
22:40Right about here.
22:45Just like that.
22:46And let's put his eyes in.
22:48I'm going to move to my black marker on this one.
22:51Okay, which is going to be two circles.
22:53Like that.
22:55And let's put his eyes in.
22:56Just like that.
22:58And his eyebrows in.
22:59Up.
23:00Because he's happy.
23:02And a triangle.
23:05Okay?
23:06Just building shapes upon other shapes.
23:09Talking the bottom one in a little bit.
23:12And we're going to build it.
23:14Maybe it bags under his eyes.
23:16And from the bottom point of that triangle,
23:18let's make a real loose line for a smile like that.
23:22And on this bottom point, how about a beard?
23:27Maybe have his tongue coming out like that.
23:30Some whiskers.
23:32Which are some circles like that.
23:34Some hairs coming out of him.
23:36And for his ears.
23:37Watch this.
23:38Just two little loops.
23:41With some detail inside like that.
23:43And let's darken up that gray line a little bit.
23:46Now, for the mane.
23:48All you have to do is make real loose squiggly lines.
23:50You can't go wrong.
23:51Whatever you do is going to look good.
23:53Watch.
23:57Real loose.
23:58Come around this side.
24:00Same thing.
24:02Little bumps.
24:04And a couple of little fast lines inside.
24:11And that's all there is to that.
24:13Now let's draw his body in.
24:14And that really is just a teardrop.
24:16Watch.
24:20See.
24:21Now let's put his front legs in.
24:24Which are supporting his body.
24:26That's paw.
24:29Which you separate in the center of.
24:32That shape.
24:33And then it'll look more like a paw.
24:34Do the same thing over here.
24:36Now this leg, which is a little bit behind this one.
24:39Let's make it look like it's in the shadow.
24:41A little bit.
24:42And you can do that even with a marker.
24:43Even though a marker won't get gray.
24:45It's black in there.
24:46But you can sort of indicate a gray by just making lines next to each other.
24:50Now for his back leg.
24:51Let's have a big hump for his thigh.
24:54And here's his back paw.
24:56And let's just darken in this line a little bit.
24:59And a tail.
25:01Real loose.
25:03Just like the snake before.
25:05Up and around.
25:06And his tail.
25:08Which is also like a teardrop.
25:10And when you're doing cartoon hair.
25:11It's a hairy tail.
25:13You show where it starts and where it ends.
25:16You kind of leave that middle part alone so it has a highlight.
25:19Maybe a shadow.
25:21And let's put a little color into it.
25:23And I'm going to use my chalks for this.
25:25Okay, how about a little bit of orange for his face and body.
25:36Just like that.
25:37Real loose.
25:39Maybe a little bit of red for his tongue.
25:43Nice cheeks.
25:46And some brown for his mane.
25:48Green.
25:53There you go.
25:54That looks great.
25:55I love it.
25:56I'm going to put a little bit of orange for his tail.
26:00Can't forget that.
26:03Let me just grab a little bit of green for maybe some grass.
26:11There you go.
26:14Yeah, that looks good.
26:15Maybe a little bit of blue.
26:16Just to make him popping out.
26:18So he comes to the foreground a little bit.
26:24And that's about it.
26:26Now I'd like to show you what you can do with a cute little drawing of a lion like this.
26:30Or any of your cartoons for that matter.
26:31And that's make your own greeting cards.
26:33And this is so much fun to do.
26:35What you do.
26:36Get a piece of paper.
26:37Or maybe something a little thicker.
26:38Something like a card stock.
26:39Maybe a bristol board.
26:40And cut it about nine and a half by eight and a quarter.
26:43And then fold it.
26:46Like this.
26:47The long way.
26:48So it would be able to fit into a standard nine inch envelope.
26:52Then what you might want to do is draw a cartoon.
26:54On the front page.
26:55Like I did with the lion.
26:56Right about here.
26:57And put a caption on the top.
26:58Which I wrote.
26:59I'd be lion.
27:00And inside it says.
27:01If I didn't say I love you.
27:02It could be a birthday card.
27:03It could be an anniversary card.
27:04It could be anything.
27:05It's your card.
27:06You can customize it.
27:07And on the back.
27:08I even put Blitz originals.
27:10I put a price in.
27:11One thousand dollars.
27:12I put.
27:13I even put a fake computer code in there.
27:15To make it look kind of funnier.
27:17And that's it.
27:19But I'll give you a word of warning.
27:20Once you start making these cards for your family and friends.
27:23They're going to come to expect them.
27:24You'll never get away with going to the store and buying them one again.
27:28As you can see.
27:29There's so many things that you can do with your cartoons.
27:31But the main thing.
27:32Is to just have fun with them.
27:33I'm Bruce Blitzing.
