Hoppalong (Hoppy) and Red find a severely wounded man who, with his dying breath, names a neighboring rancher. Hoppy investigates the situation and discovers an existing, bitter feud between the murdered man and the named rancher over water rights, which has previously led to violence.
As Hoppy delves deeper, he begins to suspect the accused rancher is being framed by a third party who is manipulating the conflict for their own gain, potentially involving the rancher's wife. He works to clear the innocent man's name, save him from hanging, and bring the real killer to justice.

00:00Here he comes, here he comes, there's the trumpets, there's the drums, here he comes, on the lawn, Cassidy, here he comes.
00:30Here he comes.
00:59This was no time to chase the killer.
01:10A man's life was at stake.
01:11A man was badly hurt.
01:31He managed to say he was Dan Emery, son of the owner of the Diamond Eve Ranch.
01:41It didn't look as if Emery could last long,
01:48but Red volunteered to ride to Rock Bluff to bring a doctor to the Diamond Eve.
02:07I tried to question Dan about the motive for the ambush,
02:10but all I got from him was a mumbled phrase,
02:13Croft.
02:14Croft did it.
02:40Croft.
02:46No, no, no.
02:47Don't call him.
02:49I'll be there.
02:49It was alive.
02:51Mr. Emery, you better come out here.
03:21What's happened to my boy?
03:36Let's get him into the house.
03:37The doctor's on his way.
03:39I'll take him for you.
03:51Here comes the doc.
04:06Where's Dan?
04:07He's in there.
04:12Hoppy in there?
04:13Yeah, with Mr. Emery.
04:15Who was that you just asked about?
04:18Hoppy.
04:19Hopalong Cassidy.
04:20He's gone out of his territory, hasn't he?
04:22Well, I wouldn't say that.
04:24Anywhere you find Hoppy, that's his territory.
04:26Don't worry.
04:45Doc.
04:46Hmm?
04:47When you get his body into town, will you get that bullet out home?
04:51That's a little unusual.
04:52Yeah, but it might be important.
04:54Well, if it'll help, sure.
04:57Don't you worry about Croft, Mr. Emery.
04:59Me and the boys will take care of him.
05:01John, you better come into town after a while and make the arrangements, huh?
05:04All right, doctor.
05:05You gentlemen have been a lot of help, and I appreciate it.
05:18Thank you, sir.
05:19Well, we're going to get a little feed for more.
05:21Oh, right out in the barn and help yourself.
05:23I mentioned that Dan had spoken the name of Croft.
05:30According to Emery, Neil Croft owned the Lazy Sea.
05:33It's a big outfit over the hill from the Diamond E.
05:36There had been a long-standing feud between the two concerning water rights and grazing land.
05:41From time to time, guns had blazed.
05:43Recently, I'd begun to think the trouble was over.
05:49Ever since Croft came back from Chicago with that new wife.
05:52It just shows how wrong a man can be.
05:55But he'll pay for this, and it won't be to his liking.
05:58Well, it's just possible he didn't do it.
06:00Oh, of course he did it.
06:01Who else would harm Dan?
06:03I can understand how you feel about Croft, Mr. Emery.
06:32But may I suggest that you think this over before you make any moves?
06:35That's good advice under the right circumstances, Hoppy.
06:38But things have gone too far for that now.
06:42Hey, Hoppy, good to see you for a minute.
06:44Sure.
06:45Excuse me.
06:51Red had heard Emery's men talk about squaring accounts with Croft.
06:55I saw them heading over the hill toward the Lazy Sea.
06:58They were steamed up over the killing of Dan.
07:01But I didn't aim to see one injustice done to write another one.
07:05Not without proof of Croft's guilt.
07:09Come here.
07:09I saw them playing.
07:19Oh, of course I saw themengo.
07:23I saw them loose.
07:25What do you think I am, a hired girl or something?
07:52You leave everything where you drop and expect me to pick it up.
07:55I didn't marry you to be a drudge.
07:58Oh, stop jawing, Nancy.
08:00All I've heard from you in weeks is yep, yep, yep.
08:03If you didn't want to sow and cook and keep house, why'd you marry me?
08:05I've been trying to figure that out myself.
08:07I'm giving just as good as I get.
08:09If you think you're any bargain...
08:10Oh, shut up.
08:15While we're on the subject of bargains, maybe I didn't get one either.
08:19I don't think I didn't notice what went on at the dance the other night.
08:22You and that Schofield didn't put anything over on me.
08:24You're crazy.
08:26All we did was dance.
08:27I'm warning you.
08:27If you don't keep away from me, I'll kill the both of you.
08:29Oh, you talk like a maniac.
08:32Where are you going now?
08:33Out to get some fresh air.
08:34It looks like the boys from the Diamond D. I wonder what they want.
08:55More than likely our own men coming back from the North Range.
08:57Have it your way.
09:07Hey, Croft!
09:08Come on out here!
09:09It is Emery's men.
09:13They've got a lot of nerve coming here.
09:20Get off my property, Schofield.
09:22I reckon you know what we're here for.
09:23I don't know and I don't care.
09:26Now clear out.
09:27We don't cotton to dry gulchum.
09:29I don't know what you're talking about, but if you feel lucky, start something.
09:33Come on, boys.
09:34We're wasting time.
09:35Let's get him.
09:35I'll kill the first man that steps in this yard.
09:40No, Neil.
09:40No bloodshed, please.
09:42Get out of here.
09:44Get out.
09:45Get this.
10:01Hurry, get the boys.
10:05Why don't you get a rope around that hay there?
10:21Look at the horse.
10:24The shot we heard warned us of trouble at the lazy sea.
10:27I wonder if Croft were already dead.
10:29Or if maybe the ornery rancher could gleefully carve another notch in the stock of his rifle.
10:35Oh, boy.
11:03only second separated croft from hanging guilty or innocent the man was entitled to a fair and
11:18impartial trial red looked to me for instructions i hope my strategy would work if it didn't
11:24croft soon would be awfully dead

14:26mrs croft your husband says he didn't leave the ranch this morning is that true
14:30this morning let me think oh you brought into town right after breakfast remember neil
14:37that was yesterday morning oh so it was i'm sorry you'd be a lot sorrier ma'am if your husband was
14:43convicted of killing young emory under the circumstances i'll have to take you into
14:48rock bluff and turn you over to the sheriff it's for your own protection i can take care of myself
14:52i think we'd better do it my way let's go
14:56look after things like it back and keep away from that schofield
15:06i couldn't convince myself that croft was a killer
15:18but i asked myself if not croft who and why it was only a hunch that caused me to leave red
15:25behind to keep an eye on the lazy sea
15:37i think so
15:54I was hoping you'd get here
16:11Oh, Hank
16:12Neil's starting to kill us if he catches us together
16:17Oh, calm down, take it easy
16:19Oh, Hank, why can't we just go away
16:22and forget the whole thing

21:41Oh, my God.
21:48Bobby!
21:49Bobby!
21:50What is it?
21:51He's gone again.
21:52Looks like he's headed for that line cabin.
21:54You wait here.
21:55But Bobby, I...
21:56Come on, get out!
22:01Get in there!
22:05Come on!
22:06My desire was not to overtake Schofield, but to trail him to his destination.
22:21He had no way of knowing that the sheriff had released Croft.
22:40Hank, Neil's home.
22:46When Schofield entered the line cabin, I felt sure Red had hit the nail on the head.
22:50Schofield and Nancy Croft were having another rendezvous.
22:53I felt it could breed unhappiness, maybe even murder.
23:06I was just writing you a note.
23:08Does Neil know where you are?
23:09No, I don't think so.
23:11Hank, I'm scared.
23:12Well, snap out of it, will you?
23:13You've got to get rid of him while you're still his wife and we'll never get that wrench.
23:16But it's not worth it, Hank.
23:18You've already murdered young Emery.
23:19Isn't that enough?
23:20Shut up, will you?
23:21I've got to think things out.
23:23Hey, you, Cassidy!
23:37That's Neil.
23:44Settle everything right now.
23:53I told you what I'd do if I caught you two together.
24:14Oh, no, Neil.
24:15No.
24:16It isn't what you think.
24:17I think it is, Nancy.
24:18You're no good.
24:19You never have been.
24:20No!
24:23Shooting her to put you in the penitentiary too, Croft.
24:36I'm sure of the evidence I have that both she and Schofield have paid the penalty for killing young Emery.
24:41You're right, Mr. Cassidy.
24:42Thanks.
24:45Go get her and bring her into town.
24:48All right, come on.
24:49On your feet.
24:50I'm deeply indebted to both of you.
24:51Whenever you happen this way again, drop in.
24:52Yeah, we sure will.
24:53I hope the next time it's under happier circumstances.
24:54In the meantime, so long and good luck to you.
24:55Thanks, Hoppy.
24:56You too, Red.
24:57You too, Red.
24:58indebted to both of you. Whenever you happen this way again, drop in. Yeah, we sure will.
25:03I hope the next time it's under happier circumstances. In the meantime, so long and
25:08good luck to you. Thanks, Hoppy. You too, Red.
25:28There he goes on his way down the moonlet trail to where Cowboys ran. Hop along, Cassidy. Hop along, Cassidy. He'll return soon again. There's no use to say goodbye until then.
25:53Hop along, Cassidy. So long, hop along.
