00:00From Hollywood, the Jack Benny program, with Jack's special guest, Johnny Carson.
00:30Thank you. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the show.
00:37Now, on various occasions, I have walked out here on the stage and talked about the fan mail that I have received.
00:45You know, some good, some bad.
00:46But there are other ways besides fan mail where people show their appreciation.
00:52Like, for instance, well, how do you like this beautiful blue tie that I'm wearing?
01:01This came from a fan, you see?
01:03And take these shoes.
01:07They're a gift, too.
01:09See, and these shoes are made of real, genuine alligator skin.
01:15And, well, they didn't actually send me the shoes.
01:20You see, when I opened the box, there was a live alligator in it.
01:29I haven't beat it to death.
01:33And, you know, it was a species, a most dangerous species of alligator.
01:43I don't know the name of it, but it had a long blue tongue.
01:47The knot is one of his tonsils.
01:58Mr. Benny.
02:00Mr. Benny.
02:00The people have sent in.
02:01Mr. Benny.
02:02Yeah.
02:05Oh, so soon?
02:06Yes, right now.
02:07Right now.
02:07Oh, well, I didn't expect...
02:09Oh, all right.
02:09Uh, ladies and gentlemen, I didn't expect to do this so early in the show, but, you see, Don Wilson is on the corner of Hollywood and Vine doing one of those, you know, man-on-the-street interviews.
02:24Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
02:26This is Don Wilson speaking to you from the corner of Hollywood and Vine.
02:29I'm just going to chat with some of these good people passing by here and ask them what they think of our fine sponsor.
02:34Oh, oh, mister, mister, can I ask you for just a moment, please?
02:38Hmm?
02:38Yeah.
02:39Hey, that's a microphone.
02:42Hey, don't try to hide it.
02:45Hey, I know what you're doing.
02:47You're Alan Font and I'm on candid camera.
02:50No, no, I'm not Alan Font.
02:52Don't kid me.
02:53Boy, you look a lot fatter in person than you do on TV.
02:57Hey, what night is this show going to go on?
02:59But, mister, what I...
03:00Hello, Alan, that's Elsie.
03:02I told you my sisters, you know, Mr. Font, they always watch your programs.
03:05Look, that's just what I'm trying to tell you.
03:07You're not going to be on candid camera.
03:10Oh, I'm not good enough, I guess.
03:12You don't think I'm important.
03:15Well, let me tell you something, brother.
03:17I used to be a very big man.
03:19Once I built a railroad.
03:21Hey, come on.
03:22Well, it seems that Don is having a little musical trouble, so we'll get back to him later.
03:37And now, ladies and gentlemen, to get on with the show, it gives me great pleasure to present
03:42a young fellow who is doing a marvelous job on his own Tonight Show in New York City, Mr. Johnny Carson.
04:01Johnny, I want to welcome you to my program and welcome you back to Los Angeles.
04:07Thank you, Jack.
04:08You know, I can't tell you how this, uh, how exciting it is to me to be here because I started right here in television about 12 years ago.
04:15Right here in Los Angeles?
04:16Well, not only that, but strangely enough, right in this very studio.
04:21I used to be an usher.
04:24You?
04:24You were an usher in this studio?
04:26Right.
04:26You mean, you used to be one of the fellas who would let the people in to see my show?
04:33No, no.
04:34The other fellas let them in.
04:36I had to keep them in.
04:43Keep them in?
04:44I was sort of the opposite of a bouncer, Jack.
04:48Oh.
04:48Well, now, Johnny, I know you're kidding.
04:52You know what?
04:53I know you are.
04:53You're just making this whole thing up.
04:55Well, you know I am, Jack.
04:56Can I tell you something honestly, though?
04:58When I was an usher here, well, like 12 years ago, I used to watch you all the time.
05:01Really?
05:02And you were my idol.
05:03And watching you do your show was like kind of going to school.
05:06Yeah.
05:07And I started to emulate you.
05:08You know, pretty soon I was moving my hands like, like you do.
05:11Mm-hmm.
05:12And after a little while, I was even walking like you do.
05:14And before you know it, I was no longer an usher.
05:17What happened?
05:18They made me an usherette.
05:26Now, Johnny, getting back to you, you know, I know how accustomed you are to working in
05:32a certain set on your own show, so I wanted to make things as comfortable for you as possible.
05:37Really, Jack?
05:38Yeah.
05:38Now, I'll show you what I did.
05:39Open the curtains, please.
05:40There.
05:41What?
05:41What do you mean?
05:42Let's show you.
05:46Yes, sir.
05:46Well, Jack, I'll tell you one thing.
05:49You were right.
05:50You know, it does make me feel more comfortable and more relaxed.
05:53Just like home.
05:54Well, I'm glad.
05:56Because, Johnny, um, you know, I have, I'm glad to hear you say that, because I have a
06:02few suggestions that I'd like to make.
06:04Now, I watch your show all the time, you see?
06:06And I have some suggestions to make that I think are of value.
06:10I hope you won't mind.
06:12Mine?
06:13Jack, are you kidding?
06:15I mean, suggestions coming from a man who's been in show business for years and years and
06:19years and years and years.
06:21Jack, aren't you going to stop me?
06:28Why should I?
06:30My career hasn't even started yet.
06:35Now, Johnny, I think you're a great comedian.
06:38Well, I really do.
06:39But, I have a suggestion to make.
06:43If you want to remain in show business and stay up there, I mean, you better start to
06:50develop some other kind of talent instead of just sitting behind that desk talking.
06:55That's not enough.
06:56There's a question how long you can get away with.
07:01Jack, I think I know what you mean.
07:03Now, you, for example, you just weren't satisfied with being a comedian and a monologist.
07:07You also mastered the violin.
07:11Exactly.
07:14Now, that's, that's the point I'm trying to bring up, Johnny.
07:18You should learn, have something else to do.
07:22Well, Jack, now, I've never capitalized on this, but I, I can do some card tricks.
07:26Card tricks?
07:27Yes, I have a deck of cards here with me.
07:29Oh.
07:30I can show you, show you what I mean.
07:33It's a deck of cards, you see?
07:35I'll mix them up a little bit here.
07:37And we'll cut them.
07:44That?
07:45Mm-hmm.
07:53It's here like this, you see?
07:54Mm-hmm.
07:57Is that what you make of?
08:01Well.
08:01Uh, Johnny, look, everybody does card tricks.
08:08That's it.
08:08They do it at parties.
08:09They drive you nuts with it.
08:11Well, I think you should take up something, you know, perform, like, with a musical instrument
08:17or something like that.
08:19Well, now, let's see.
08:20Now, about 20 years ago, I used to fool around with the drums a little bit.
08:24Now, I suppose I could, you know, get them out of the attic and brush up.
08:27That's what I mean.
08:27That's the thing for you.
08:28Wait a minute.
08:29Huh?
08:30You can try it right now if you'd like.
08:33Now?
08:34Certainly.
08:34Well.
08:35Hey, fellas, would you bring out the drums, please?
08:39Well.
08:39You've got everything here, haven't you?
08:43Yes, sir.
08:46Nice.
08:55Alligator skin?
09:04I had some left over.
09:07Now, go ahead.
09:08Jack, I really don't know.
09:10It's been so long since I played it.
09:12Well, do the best you can.
09:13What's the difference?
09:14Okay.
09:38How was that, Jack?
10:01Well, I don't know.
10:04To me, without the fife and flag, it's nothing.
10:10Now, Jack, I'll tell you what.
10:12Maybe I should just, you know, forget about the drums.
10:14They're very noisy anyway, and I'll just stick with my singing and my dancing.
10:17Oh, well, don't bother.
10:19You got the point.
10:19No, I don't like to.
10:20I know, but we haven't got time now.
10:21Well, you want to see if I did something, you know.
10:22I know, but we haven't got time now.
10:23Okay, hit it.
10:24First, you put your two knees close up tight.
10:35Then you sway them to the left.
10:37Then you sway them to the right.
10:39Step around the floor kind of nice and light.
10:41Then you twist around and twist around with all your might.
10:45Spread your loving arms right out of space.
10:48Then you do the eagle rock with a style and grace.
10:51Swing your foot way round and bring it back.
10:55Now, that's what I call ball and a jack.
11:08Twist around and twist around with all your might.
11:11Stretch your loving arms right out of space.
11:14Then you do the eagle rock with a style and grace.
11:17Swing your foot way round and bring it back.
11:21Now, that's what I call ball and a jack.
11:41Now, Johnny, I don't know why I had to drag all of these things out of you.
11:46If you're that versatile, why don't you do some of that stuff on your own show?
11:50Well, I'll tell you why, Jack.
11:51To be honest, I'm too busy acting.
11:57Acting?
11:58You call that stuff that you do sitting there behind that desk talking?
12:03You call that acting?
12:05What kind of acting is that?
12:07Jack, you remember the last time you were on the show with me?
12:09Yes.
12:11Do you remember what you said or what we talked about?
12:15I think I do.
12:16Well, now, let me show you something.
12:18Now, as long as you went to all the trouble to bring my set here,
12:20why don't you go backstage and I'll reintroduce you
12:23and I'll recreate that portion of the last show when you were with me
12:26and I'll show you what acting.
12:28Go backstage.
12:29I'll give you the regular introduction like I did.
12:31Then you'll show me that you can act?
12:32I'll show you exactly what I mean.
12:34Just go on back to me.
12:35Please.
12:37I'll give you the big introduction,
12:39then you come out and sit and we'll talk.
12:48Now, Jack thinks that I can't act.
12:50I don't have to on this show.
12:52But you see, what the audience doesn't realize half of the time
12:54is that, well, they don't know what I'm really thinking.
12:56You know, the thoughts that actually go through my mind
12:59when I'm talking to one of their guests.
13:01I'd like to show you what I mean by acting.
13:04Are you ready, Jack?
13:05Okay.
13:07And now, ladies and gentlemen,
13:09I come to one of those rare moments
13:11that makes this entire program worthwhile to me.
13:14A chance to introduce
13:15one of the all-time greats of show business.
13:19A man who's not only talented,
13:22but tremendously versatile.
13:24And certainly, one of the sweetest
13:26and most lovable individuals in all of show business.
13:29Ladies and gentlemen,
13:31the one and only, Jack Betty.
13:38Yeah.
13:47Look at him, milk that applause.
14:08He's doing everything but curtsy.
14:10Welcome, welcome to the show.
14:20Good to see you.
14:22Uh, thank you, Johnny.
14:23I, uh, I want to thank you for that wonderful, wonderful introduction.
14:28Well, Jack, you, you certainly deserved it.
14:32Hmm, why should he thank me?
14:33He wrote it himself.
14:34You know, Johnny, I came to New York to relax and see a few shows, you know, and enjoy
14:43myself, you understand?
14:45And I was hoping I wouldn't have to make any personal appearances on television shows.
14:49And how you found out that I was in town, I'll, I'll never know.
14:55Well, Jack, let's just say it was one of those happy accidents.
14:59Happy accident.
15:00He's been in town three days, called me 29 times.
15:04Well, Johnny, I'm sure you didn't ask me to come over here just to sit down, so what
15:09would you like to talk about?
15:11Well, Jack, I don't think makes any difference in the world.
15:14I think my audience would be interested in, well, in whatever you have to say.
15:18I think they'd hang on every word.
15:20Well, all right, let's see.
15:23What shall I talk about?
15:25You know, I've had a lot of interesting experiences.
15:29Oh, I hope he doesn't bore us with that story about what happened to him in Chicago.
15:33Oh, I must tell you a story about what happened to me when I was playing at the State Lake
15:39Theater in Chicago.
15:42Wonderful, Jack.
15:44Wonderful.
15:44You know, I never get tired of that story.
15:47I've heard you tell it at least a dozen times.
15:49Parties and benefits, and you do it so beautifully.
15:52Please, please tell it again.
15:54For this alone, I should get an Emmy.
15:58Now, in order for you to appreciate the story, I have to read you a review I got on my act.
16:05Oh.
16:05You see, at the State Lake.
16:06Oh.
16:07I got it right here.
16:08Sometimes I carry it with me somewhere.
16:10Is that the review?
16:11Yes.
16:12This is right here.
16:13Oh, it starts on the other side.
16:29Some review.
16:30I've got a shower curtain smaller than that.
16:33Now, I have to read the whole thing, because every word is important.
16:41I just want to clean my glasses a second.
16:45Oh, I've just got to stop it.
16:48I know.
16:48I'll fake a commercial.
16:52Now, there we are.
16:54Jack, Jack, I know you'll forgive me, but I have to interrupt here.
16:58It's time for a commercial.
16:59Oh, business before pleasure.
17:02Listen, I'm not doing this business long enough.
17:04Oh, I know.
17:04I know you'd understand, Jack.
17:06Sure, I can read this after a while.
17:09Ladies, you know there are times when you're just too tired and you don't want to take out the vacuum cleaner?
17:15And yet there is dust and dirt and lint on the floor, sometimes even scraps of paper.
17:21It's time to take out the old whisk room and just...
17:31And of course, your floors again are sparkling clean.
17:39Go ahead, Jack.
17:47Oh, for God's sake.
17:49Look what I did.
17:50I tore up your review.
17:52I'm sorry, Jack.
17:55Well, that's all right, Johnny.
17:57I just happen to have another one here with me.
18:02Sometimes I have two.
18:04I don't...
18:04I'll read this later.
18:16Because it is...
18:17They'll love this.
18:18I don't read it.
18:18But I'll tell you, I'd rather play the violin.
18:21You know, I brought my violin and I put it here.
18:22Oh, really?
18:22I'd rather play the violin.
18:24Look at that, Jack, Jack, Jack.
18:26I'll tell you what.
18:26Look, I don't think it's necessary you can play the violin.
18:29The only reason I wanted to do this scene was to show you how much acting I have to do on my show.
18:34And I think we've accomplished that.
18:36I have a feeling that you don't want me to play the violin.
18:40Exactly.
18:44All right, all right.
18:46Down with the curtain, fellas.
18:49Now, Johnny, you've proved to me...
18:52that you're a very versatile young man.
18:54And I want to thank you for being on my show.
18:57Well, Jack, thank you.
18:58It's been a lot of fun.
18:59And may I say one thing to the audience?
19:00Yes, correct.
19:01I don't want him to feel that the scene we just did, anyway, reflects how I feel about you.
19:06I think Jack Banny is one of the greatest artists of all times and a wonderful performer.
19:11And Jack, I'm amazed how you go on year after year.
19:14Never seem to change at all.
19:16I don't know how you do it.
19:17But whatever the secret is, you found it.
19:19Thanks, Jack.
19:20Good night.
19:21Good night.
19:22He's sweet.
19:27But I don't know what's so amazing about it.
19:31I mean, practically every guest star I have says the same thing.
19:35You know, when you love showbinds like I do, you stay in it some way or another.
19:40And now, ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to play for a change, something classical.
19:46The Wieniawski concerto.
19:49The Wieniawski concerto.
19:49The Wieniawski concerto.
19:51The Wienerwski concerto.
19:54The Wieniawski concerto.
20:08Oh, hi, Mr. Carson.
20:20Oh, excuse me, fellas. I didn't know anybody who was in here.
20:22Oh, that's all right. We're just waiting for Mr. Benny to come off stage.
20:24Well, you ought to be in a couple of minutes. He's just winding up the show now.
20:27I thought I'd borrow a little of his cold cream to take the makeup off.
20:30How'd the show go?
20:31Oh, great. As usual.
20:33You know something?
20:34That Jack Benny is absolutely amazing.
20:36I mean, the way he goes on year after year.
20:40He never seems to get any older.
20:42He looks the same year in and year out.
20:46I can't imagine how he does it.
20:51Well, that wraps up another one.
21:06I can't imagine how the show is going on here in the end.
21:24Oh, my God.
21:54Thank you, thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the...
22:10Must have pressed the button.
22:24How long has this been going on?
22:40We don't know.
22:41We started 15 years ago.
22:42Well, Johnny, don't breathe a word of this to anybody, will you?
23:02I'll be back as soon as I can pull myself together.
23:19But first...
23:33Thank you, thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, and I hope you enjoyed the show.
23:39How about that finish we had?
23:41Wasn't that the most ridiculous thing you ever, you ever, you ever, you ever, you ever, you ever heard of?
23:55I want to thank Johnny Carson for being on my show, and I'll be seeing you folks soon.
