00:00From Hollywood, the Jack Benny program, with Jack's special guest, M. Sullivan.
00:30Thank you, thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the show.
00:40Now, I've got to tell you what happened to me today as I was driving down to the studio.
00:45See, when I stopped for a red light, I noticed a little old lady sitting on the bench waiting for a bus.
00:52So I picked her up, you know, and I, and as long as she was coming in this direction anyway,
00:57see, I brought her over here to the studio, and when she got out of the car,
01:03she was so grateful that she offered me the 30 cents which she would have had to pay the bus.
01:12Well, naturally, I, you know, I wouldn't accept it.
01:18But I noticed it was hurting her feelings, and she was so anxious to show her appreciation
01:24that, uh, right now, while I'm doing this show, she's outside washing my car.
01:38Anyway, I'm very excited about the show that we're doing tonight
01:42because, um, as you know, my guest star is Ed Sullivan.
01:46And in our play tonight, he is making his debut as a dramatic actor.
01:53This, this you have got to see.
01:58And now, ladies and gentlemen, before I present Mr. Sullivan,
02:01I would like to bring out a young lady.
02:04Jack.
02:12Ed, Ed, this is too soon.
02:15What are you doing out here now?
02:16Jack, I'm sorry to break in on you,
02:18but I've been studying this script here, and I'm a nervous wreck.
02:22But that's ridiculous.
02:24I mean, there's no reason for you to be nervous.
02:27Uh, you've been in show business for years and years.
02:29Jack is a master of ceremonies.
02:31He's in here and says I have to act.
02:32I have to emote.
02:33I just can't do it.
02:34Now, I can't do it.
02:35Oh, what do you mean you can't do it?
02:38Heaven's sake, I saw you in a movie once, and you were wonderful.
02:41You look so natural.
02:42I played the part of a dead body.
02:49I know, but you, you did it standing up.
02:54Look, Ed, will you please not worry about it?
02:57It'll be just fine.
02:59Now, go back to your dressing room and study the script.
03:01Now, don't worry.
03:02Oh, well.
03:04Please.
03:04It's, it's amazing how much that man worries.
03:11And to look at him, you'd never know it.
03:15And I, I can't understand why he's worried so much, because I went to the bother and the
03:22expense of, of, of, of bringing a young lady over here, a beautiful young girl, to help
03:27us with our, the play we're going to do.
03:29And she's here from Paris, France.
03:31There you go.
03:32And here she is, Miss Monique Lemaire.
03:39Monique, I was just telling our audience about you, and I want to tell you how very happy
03:43I am that you're in our, our show here.
03:46Thank you very much, Monsieur Benny.
03:47It was a great compliment that you invited me to be on your show.
03:51Well, you're certainly welcome.
03:53And I must say, for a young lady who's been in this country such a short time, you speak
03:57very good English.
03:58Much better than I speak French, you know.
04:01Oh, do you speak French?
04:02Well, a, a little.
04:04I mean, enough to call my poodle.
04:11Yes, I, I speak French fairly well.
04:13Well, you know that I can go to a French movie and understand practically every word.
04:19Oh, you mean you can't go to a Brigitte Bardot movie and enjoy it?
04:26I can go to a Brigitte Bardot movie with my ears plugged and enjoy it.
04:37I do not understand that.
04:38Oh, that means your ears stopped up, you know, closed up and stopped.
04:42Oh.
04:43Well, there are still a few words I have trouble understanding.
04:47Well, I can imagine, yeah.
04:48For instance, there's a word I've heard here many times that I do not understand.
04:54What word is that?
04:56Cheap.
05:04Cheap?
05:05Yes.
05:06What does it mean?
05:07Well, uh, it's rather difficult for me to explain, but I'll try.
05:15Supposing you and I were having dinner tonight, which incidentally isn't a bad idea, you know.
05:21Let's say you and I were having dinner at some lovely restaurant, and we had cocktails and steak and dessert and coffee and everything.
05:30And if I didn't at least pay my share, I would be called cheap.
05:36Yes, sir.
05:43You understand?
05:46Oui, oui.
05:46That's why you're getting your car washed.
05:48Yes, exactly
05:51Now, Monique, I think you ought to go to your dressing room and make a change
05:55Make your change now for the play we're going to do
05:58And once again, let me tell you how happy I am that you're here with us
06:02Thank you
06:03Chancelize
06:04That means you're welcome
06:08Ladies and gentlemen
06:17I'm sure you will enjoy
06:19Jack
06:20Oh, now what?
06:21Jack, I can't do it, I'm getting panicky
06:24Oh, Ed
06:25But I've got an idea
06:26Now, this is going to be a courtroom drama
06:27So why can't I play the dead body the way I did in the movie?
06:32Ed, you can't
06:33You see, the dead body doesn't appear
06:35Now, I'm going to be the prosecuting attorney
06:38And you're going to be the attorney for the defense
06:40And you'll be fine
06:41No, but Jack, that last scene where I sum up to the jury
06:44A big emotional scene
06:46You need a Clarence Darrow
06:47We can't get Clarence Darrow
06:51Please don't worry about it
06:55Just gendarme, gendarme
06:58That means relax
07:01Go back and just don't worry about it
07:08You'll be wonderful
07:09And keep that smile
07:12Ladies and gentlemen
07:17Since courtroom dramas are now the rage of television
07:22We are going to present our version of a tense legal encounter
07:27Now, this takes place in courtroom B in the Hall of Justice
07:31In an unnamed American city
07:34Ladies and gentlemen
07:39For the past ten days
07:40This courtroom has been the scene of a murder trial
07:43That has stirred up so much nationwide attention
07:45That for the first time in history
07:47A murder trial is being telecast
07:50I see the principals have just returned from lunch
07:54So before court reconvenes
07:55Perhaps I can have a word with them
07:57This gentleman here is Prosecutor Benny
08:05The most feared district attorney in the country
08:08He's prosecuted this trial
08:10With the same cold-blooded ruthlessness
08:12That has made him so very famous
08:14Would you say something for our television audience, please?
08:24I told you he was rough
08:26And here is Gentleman Jim Sullivan
08:34The eloquent and brilliant defense attorney
08:37Whose charming smile has swayed many at yours
08:39Would you like to comment on this trial, please?
08:42Well, no doubt about it
08:43This is big
08:45Really big
08:46And here is the determinant
08:54This petite little French girl
08:56Is accused of having murdered her husband
08:59I'm innocent
09:01I tell you I'm innocent
09:02Believe me
09:03I'm very innocent
09:05I couldn't matter
09:06I'm innocent
09:07Incidentally, you might be
09:24Interested to know
09:24That her father owns a tailor shop
09:26Well, I see court is about to resume
09:33Any moment now
09:34I'm sure we'll be able to find out
09:36What the verdict of this very fine jury
09:38Now, you listen to me
09:39I don't have to listen to anybody
09:42Uh-oh, there seems to be a disturbance
09:44I don't know what it is
09:45But I have a feeling
09:47That this court is prejudiced
09:49In favor of your French client
09:51That feeling is completely ridiculous
09:54She is innocent
09:55And we have done nothing
09:57To influence the verdict in this case
09:59Stand aside
10:00Here comes the jury
10:02Your Honor
10:24I object to this jury
10:26What chance have I got
10:27To get a fair verdict
10:28I mean, the accused is French
10:30And every member of the jury is French
10:33You do have a problem, monsieur
10:37I'll say I do
10:53Perhaps you will feel more comfortable
10:58If you take off the berets
11:00And put down the bottles of wine
11:03And no more talking and laughing
11:06We will now proceed with the trial
11:11Your Honor
11:13I would like to call the accused
11:15Back to the stand
11:16Will the accused please take the stand?
11:20I, uh, I asked for the accused
11:30What are you doing here?
11:31I, I finished washing your car, Mr. Bailey
11:35Well, thank you
11:42Thank you, Mr. Bailey
11:43Now, will the accused please take the stand?
11:52Now, Madam Duval
12:11Please, call me Fifi
12:13All right, people
12:15It has been established
12:17That your husband was murdered
12:19By being hit on the head
12:22With this pipe
12:23It has also been proven
12:28That from the direction of the blow
12:30That the murderer was approximately
12:32Five feet, eight inches tall
12:34And was left-handed
12:35And from the scratches on that pipe
12:38It is evident
12:39He was wearing a heavy ring
12:42Now, let me ask you something, Madam Duval
12:46Do you recognize this?
12:48Oui
12:48It is an airplane ticket
12:50I'll say it's an airplane ticket
12:52And this ticket was purchased by you
12:55The night of your husband's murder
12:56Now, if you're so innocent
12:59Why did you suddenly decide to go to Paris?
13:03Because I love Paris
13:04Naturally, you love Paris
13:07It's 3,000 miles away from the scene of your crime
13:11I object, Your Honor, to the contemptible innuendos of this district attorney
13:15Because with the court's permission
13:18I can prove that my client had a perfectly innocent reason
13:22For leaving the country at this time
13:24You may proceed
13:26Fifi, in your own words
13:28Would you tell the judge and the court
13:31Why you decided at that particular time
13:34To purchase a ticket to Paris?
13:36Because I love Paris in the springtime
13:39Of course, Paris is beautiful in the springtime
13:42And I love Paris in the fall
13:45I love Paris in the summer
13:49When it sizzles
13:54I love Paris every moment
14:14Now on the night of the murder
14:40My client had dinner with her husband
14:42The Chapeau restaurant
14:44Wilshire and La Brea
14:45And that was a particularly happy night, wasn't it?
14:48I will never forget that dinner
14:50My husband enjoyed it so much
14:52He loved frog's legs
14:54Frog's legs?
14:55That night, he had 7,000 frog's legs
14:58Just a minute
15:00Your husband was murdered on the night of March 1st
15:04Why did you wait till March 6th to report it?
15:07I didn't know he was dead
15:08You didn't know he was dead?
15:11He was so full of frog's legs
15:14He took him five days to stop jumping
15:16I thought I had her trapped
15:24Ladies and gentlemen, once again
15:29Prosecutor Benny has made a big jerk of himself
15:32Your Honor
15:34Your Honor, the defense rests
15:36Is the prosecution finished?
15:40No, Your Honor
15:41I have a surprise witness
15:44Will you please call in my witness?
15:47Madame Duval, you may step down
15:49Will the next witness please come in?
16:04Please sit down
16:16Ooh, it's still warm
16:20Now, will you please tell the court your name?
16:28Arlington Montgomery Van Usen III
16:30And what do you do?
16:33I am a busboy at the Chapeau restaurant
16:35A busboy?
16:41Just a minute
16:43From a distinguished family like yours
16:46Why would you be a busboy?
16:49My father disinherited me when I flunked at Polo
16:52Flunked at Polo?
16:57I missed the ball and killed my horse
16:59Objection overruled
17:04Now, Mr. Van Usen
17:12The third
17:13Mr. Van Usen
17:16Since you were the busboy at this particular table
17:19Would you say that the defendant and her husband
17:24Were antagonistic to each other?
17:26Oh, yes
17:26When I came back to their table
17:28She was holding his hand
17:29Well, what, uh, made you think
17:32That that showed antagonism?
17:35She was holding it over the flame
17:36In the chafing dish
17:37Now, tell me
17:44Did you or did you not
17:47See a murder on March 1st?
17:50Definitely
17:50Definitely what?
17:55I definitely did or did not see a murder
17:57Well, which is
18:03It's your question
18:04Take your peek
18:04Well, look
18:10Tell the court what happened later that night
18:13Well, when the restaurant closed
18:15I went to the parking lot
18:17And there I saw that same man
18:19Madam Duval's husband
18:20Lying dead
18:22Just a minute
18:23If you came across the body of a murdered man
18:26Why didn't you call the police?
18:28When you're found dead after eating in our restaurant
18:30That doesn't necessarily mean that you've been murdered
18:33Oh, Your Honor
18:41May I be excused?
18:43It's time for the floor show at the chapeau
18:45Floor show?
18:47What does that have to do with you?
18:49I am it
18:49If there are no further witnesses
19:09Will the attorney for the defense
19:11Proceed with his summation
19:13Ladies and gentlemen
19:15A hush falls over the courtroom
19:16As Jim Sullivan
19:18The defense attorney
19:19Begins one of his dramatic pleas to the jury
19:22For which he is so very, very famous
19:25The gentlemen of the jury
19:27Never in my long career
19:30Before the bar
19:31Never
19:31Probably in the history
19:32Of American jurisprudence
19:34There is such monumental trivia
19:37Been uttered
19:38As you have heard
19:39From my distinguished
19:40Opponent here
19:41The district attorney
19:42We have conceded
19:51All of the points
19:52He has labored to make
19:53Over and over again
19:54We have conceded
19:55This was the murder weapon
19:57That was wielded by somebody
19:58Probably five foot eight inches tall
20:01Undoubtedly left-handed
20:03From the direction of the blow
20:04We have conceded
20:06All of these things
20:07Because none of these qualifications
20:08Fit my client
20:10This innocent
20:12Grief-stricken widow
20:14She is not left-handed
20:16She is not five foot eight
20:17She wouldn't be strong enough
20:19To wield such a weapon as this
20:20Now I beg of you, gentlemen
20:22I plead with you
20:25You have children at home
20:27You have wives
20:29Look at this woman
20:30Who is being crucified
20:31By this terrible person here
20:35And there's no point to it
20:37She is innocent
20:39She is bereaved
20:40And she is the one
20:41Who now is being
20:43Set upon by this beast here
20:46Is this fair?
20:48Is it American?
20:49Is it honest?
20:51Is this
20:52Is this the face of a murderess?
20:58Oh, incidentally
20:59Out in our audience
21:01There's some celebrities there
21:04Sure
21:13Eddie Arcaro
21:16One of the great golfers
21:19Of the country
21:20The winner of the
21:21North-South invitation
21:23Sam Frangle
21:25Sam, come on up here
21:26In the courtroom
21:29Ladies and gentlemen
21:33Let's bring him up here
21:34Help me out here
21:35Let's have some applause
21:35Sam
21:36Sam, what a wonderful
21:41Wonderful, unexpected thrill
21:43Congratulations
21:43You know
21:44To beat the top professional
21:46Golfers of the world
21:47Twice in a row
21:48That's really something
21:49I was very interested
21:50In that magazine article
21:51That you wrote
21:52You said that you
21:53Thought your game
21:54Would improve
21:54When you changed your grip
21:55That's right, Ed
21:56How about showing
21:56The golfers
21:57Well, and me too
21:58This new grip, huh?
21:59All right, Ed
22:00Let me get my club
22:01On it
22:01Let me get it
22:04Good
22:06I was hooking the ball
22:08A little bit
22:08So I just put my right hand
22:09Up on top of the club
22:10A little more
22:10Oh, I see, I see
22:12Wait a minute
22:12Wait a minute
22:13What's this?
22:14What?
22:14Oh, I'm left-handed
22:16Left-handed
22:19Good, your grip looks all right
22:23Now, I'll tell you
22:24Take a little wider stance
22:25By the way, Ed
22:26How tall are you?
22:28Hmm?
22:28How tall are you?
22:29Exactly
22:29Five foot eight
22:30Five foot eight
22:35Look, you're gripping
22:38The club too hard now
22:39You're scratching it
22:40With that heavy ring
22:40You're wearing there
22:41Heavy ring?
22:47Well, where's it scratch?
22:49Right there
22:50Where it was scratched before
22:51All right, now
22:51You ready to swing?
22:52Yes
22:53I'll say he's ready to swing
22:55You
22:56You're the murderer
22:59You're the one
23:00Who killed her husband
23:02Your five feet eight
23:03Left-handed
23:03Wearing a heavy ring
23:05You did it
23:06Yes, yes, yes
23:06You did it
23:07I did it, Jack
23:08But, Jack, I couldn't help it
23:10I loved it
23:11Just for that, Jack
23:12I didn't
23:13I had to get rid of a lie
23:14But, Jack, I love you
23:16So, that lie
23:17It was perfectly
23:18Jack and Ed will be back in just tomorrow
23:30Thank you, thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen
23:38Ed, you were just wonderful as a defense attorney
23:42Oh, and by the way, I have to be in court in a few weeks
23:46I wish you could be there to defend me
23:48I can't, Jack
23:51Why not?
23:52I'm the one who saw you
23:53Oh, yes, for heaven's sake
23:58Well, good luck
23:59Good night, folks
24:06I'll be seeing you soon
24:07Thank you, you, Doc
24:09Thank you
24:09Thank you, Josh
24:11And by the way, we'll be there to my general
24:12Oh, yes, you rain
24:14Oh, first
24:15Well, thank you
24:16Thank you
24:17Oh, thank you
24:18Cheers
24:18Thanks
24:19Thank you
