an Indian agent enlists the help of Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) to persuade a local Indian chief to reveal the location where crude oil can be found on tribal land. The goal is for the tribe to contract with oil companies before the land is opened to settlement. An unscrupulous outsider is attempting to grab the land, which would prevent the Native American tribe from earning income from the oil wells.

00:00Here he comes! Here he comes! There's the trumpets, there's the drums, here he comes!
00:10Hop along Cassidy, here he comes!
00:30My saddle pal Red Connors and I were riding deep in the heart of the Sierra Blanca country on a strange mission.
00:40A week ago, the assistant chief for the Bureau of Indian Affairs had sent for me.
00:49And in his office in Santa Fe, New Mexico...
00:53And somewhere in this thousand square mile area is the place the Indians call the land of the black waters that burn.
00:59Only Chief Tall Horse has the map with the exact location.
01:03Said to be on a bracelet that's handed down from father to son.
01:06You mean you brought Hoppy and me all the way from Twin Rivers just to tell us this Indian bedtime story?
01:10Red, this is not just a legend.
01:12There's a lot of evidence in the museums that prove that the Comanches knew of the existence of oil long before the white man came west.
01:18Chief Tall Horse has admitted he has the map, but he refuses to give it up.
01:22Says the tradition of his tribe that only evil can come from the black waters.
01:26Oh, Indians are always worrying about ghosts or something.
01:30They had a right to worry about the waters in those days, Red.
01:33The animals got stuck in the oil, and when the braids went after them, they got stuck too and went under.
01:38Well, Mr. Bradley, now that I've given Red his history lesson, what is it you want me to do?
01:43I want to get that map from Chief Tall Horse.
01:45If anyone can get it, I know you can.
01:48Why is it so important all of a sudden?
01:50That land is due to be open for homesteading ten days from today.
01:53If anyone discovers oil after that date, the Indians won't get a penny's worth of it.
01:58And if it's discovered before then?
02:00I have the promise of the government that the Indians will get 25% of all the oil taken from that ground.
02:06I don't know.
02:07The Chief has always been pretty set in these ideas.
02:10Hoppe, you know my feeling toward the Indians.
02:13You know I've always tried to help them.
02:15Will you help me?
02:17Well, the government put their promise to the Indians in writing.
02:20I have it right here.
02:21That's good.
02:28We'll leave for Sierra Blanca Reservation tonight.
02:31Thank you ever so much.
02:33Good luck to you.
02:35And so Red and I rode south and west.
02:48Fred, will you take the horses over to the liver's table?
02:50I thought we were going to stay at the reservation.
03:03No, it's too late to go calling our friends now.
03:06I thought we'd spend the night here.
03:08Tomorrow I'll take you out there and you're going to meet one of the finest old gentlemen I've ever known.
03:12The last of the Comanche Chiefs.
03:14Oh, he big chief have powwow with he big pale-faced Red Connors.
03:20Wait a minute.
03:21You try that tomorrow, you'll liable to get scalped by an Indian who speaks better English than you do.
03:25Come on, I'm sleepy.
03:27Help!
03:36Help!
03:38Help!
03:39Across the street, the command down.
03:41Help!
03:43Help!
03:43It was Chief Tall Horse.
03:54He's been shot in the back.
03:56How did it happen?
03:57I don't know.
03:58He's still alive. Get a doctor.
04:00There's doctors out on the reservation.
04:02Red, get a buckboard.
04:03We'll get him out to the reservation to the doctor.
04:05Hurry it up, will you?
04:10What happened, Turner?
04:11The Chief had been to dinner with Betty and me.
04:14I just said goodnight to him at the door
04:15when I heard the shot and the Chief cry out.
04:18Did you see anyone?
04:20My brother's blind.
04:22Oh, I'm sorry.
04:23The Chief's shirt is powder-burned.
04:25He must have been shot from close range.
04:27Did you see anyone running away?
04:29I was in the back room.
04:31Hurry up with that buckboard!
04:41Fred, you get our horses and follow us.
04:50Maybe I better take him out to the reservation, mister.
04:53I'm Bill Cassidy, a friend of his.
04:54You better stay here and try to find out who shot him.
04:57You bet I will.
04:57He's a friend of mine, too.
04:59All right, driver, let's get out of here.
05:00Come on!
05:01Come on!
05:01Come on!
05:31Is the doctor here?
05:33I'm the doctor.
05:34I have Chief Tall Horse in the buckboard.
05:35He's been shot.
05:36Dad!
05:51We'll put him on the couch, mister Cassidy.
05:53Right.
05:56Easy.
05:59Get me some boiling water from the kitchen.
06:06It's been a long time since you've seen me, Johnny Tall Horse.
06:09How did you remember my name?
06:10It has indeed been a long time.
06:12Before I was sent to the white man's school.
06:15But one doesn't forget the name or the face of the man
06:17who helped his father make a lasting peace with his white brothers.
06:20Here.
06:20Can I help you there?
06:21Yes.
06:22Just hold him still.
06:23I'll cut his shirt.
06:27It was nearly noon of the next day
06:29when Johnny finally pronounced his father out of danger.
06:32The chief had been lucky.
06:33The bullet had just missed his heart.
06:38Hoppy.
06:38My son and I are both grateful to you
06:51for getting me here in time, Frank Cassidy.
06:54Thank you, chief.
06:55You feel better now?
06:57Fine.
06:59My people are tough.
07:01It takes more than one bullet to kill a Comanche.
07:03What brings you to Sierra Blanca?
07:08Is it all right if I talk with you?
07:10Well, go ahead.
07:10Probably doing good.
07:13Chief, I'm here on a nation
07:15that may bring great prosperity
07:17to all your people in the years to come.
07:21The chief and I talked for several hours.
07:24He asked many questions,
07:25mainly about the government's promise
07:27to protect his people.
07:27I showed him the paper
07:29Bradley had given me.
07:34Well, just powwow going to last.
07:37My people are never in a hurry
07:38when there's something important to be considered.
07:40You think Hoppy can convince him?
07:43I think he could convince my father
07:44that black is white.
07:47So I have told you the whole story, chief.
07:49That's as far as I can go.
07:51I know you to be a man of truth, Frank Cassidy.
07:55I will give you the map.
07:56The white men can drill
07:59for the blackwaters that burn.
08:02On the bracelet on my right wrist
08:04is engraved the map.
08:07Take it with my blessing.
08:22It's not on your wrist.
08:24You must have taken it off.
08:26When I was 21 years old,
08:28my father placed the bracelet on my wrist.
08:31From that day to this,
08:33it had never left my arm.
08:35He had it on when he left yesterday afternoon, Hoppy.
08:37He did?
08:41Now I think I know why you were shot last night.
08:43Somebody beside your father must know that that bracelet is the map to the oil lands.
08:48But who could read it outside of a Comanche chief?
08:53Well, it may take time.
08:54But anyone who's made a study of Comanche symbols might eventually work it out.
08:58Johnny, what do you know about Turner and his sister?
09:08What kind of people are they?
09:09Where did they come from?
09:11Well, Betty came out here a short time ago with a blind brother
09:14and opened up a millinery shop.
09:17She's been very kind to the children on the reservation.
09:18As a matter of fact, that's why father went in to see her yesterday.
09:22To thank her for some clothes she made for them.
09:24I'm afraid you're way wider than Mark there, Hoppy.
09:27Well, maybe.
09:28Did she make the first move to meet you and your father?
09:34Well, come to think of it, she did.
09:36She always seemed very much interested in Comanche folklore.
09:41Did she ever mention the bracelet your father wore?
09:45She always admired it as a fine piece of primitive art.
09:48She did, huh?
09:50I think I'll go into town and have a talk with Miss Betty Turner.
09:54Surely you don't suspect her of having anything to do with this.
09:56Johnny, you never can tell what some people might do,
10:00especially when the stakes are high.
10:03Come on, Red.
10:04Let's go into town.
10:26Hello, Miss Turner.
10:39I want to thank you for the use of the blanket.
10:41And I'm sure you'll be glad to know that the chief is going to live.
10:45I'm so glad to hear that.
10:47Blaine!
10:48Mr. Cassidy says that the chief is going to be all right.
11:01Isn't that wonderful news?
11:02Wonderful.
11:03In a few weeks, he'll be just as good as new.
11:06Well, our thanks to you, Mr. Cassidy, for getting to the doctorate in time.
11:09Betty and I have become very fond of the old gentleman.
11:12I don't remember having seen you before.
11:14Do you belong in this district?
11:15Oh, no.
11:17We're from the Twin Rivers country.
11:18We just came down here to buy some Indian cattle.
11:21Well, we'd better go if we want to look at that herd.
11:24Goodbye.
11:26Oh, uh, by the way,
11:29the chief seems to think he lost a bracelet of some kind here in town last night.
11:33Did you hear anyone say they found it?
11:36No, I didn't.
11:39Was it valuable?
11:40No, I don't think so.
11:42It's probably just one of those old things the older Indians wear.
11:44If I hear anything, I'll let the chief know.
11:47I wouldn't worry about it.
11:49He'll remember where he put it when his mind clears up.
11:52Goodbye.
11:52Thanks for coming in, Mr. Cassidy.
11:54Goodbye.
12:02You sure learned a lot of nothing in there.
12:04I wouldn't say that.
12:05You know, Hoppy, the longer I hang around you, the less I know what's in your mind.
12:09That goes two ways double.
12:11Come on.
12:11Where are we headed for?
12:13Telegraph office.
12:14I want to get a message off to Bradley in Santa Fe.
12:16What about?
12:17I want some information about a blind man who can write.
12:21What are you talking about, Hoppy?
12:23I'll bet that blame Turner can see as good as I can.
12:25What makes you think so?
12:27He was working on those maps in the living room table.
12:29He had ink stains all over his fingers.
12:31I didn't see any.
12:32I did.
12:33You did?
12:37I'd sent my message asking if the Bureau of Indian Affairs knew anything of a woman who called herself Betty Turner.
12:43An hour later, I received a reply.
12:48What did you say?
12:49Yeah, read it.
12:53Betty Turner, formerly a secretary in this office.
12:57Stop.
12:58What are you standing for?
12:59Read the rest of it.
12:59What did you say?
13:00Stop.
13:00Well, that's just a period.
13:02Oh, sure.
13:04Stop.
13:06Her brother, Blaine Turner, considered an authority on Indian folklore.
13:10Radley.
13:12I'll be darned.
13:13Like we hit on something.
13:15That dirty sneak.
13:16What are we going to do now?
13:18Get the bracelet back?
13:19I wish it was that simple.
13:21We can't even prove that they've got it.
13:23Come on, let's get back to the reservation.
13:26I got an idea that might work.
13:32If anyone else had told me this story, I would not have believed them.
13:45You know something else, Chief?
13:47I believe Blaine Turner shot you just to get that bracelet.
13:50But we still have to prove it.
13:54Who?
13:55Chief, do you have another bracelet that looks anything like the map bracelet?
13:59We have several.
14:01All right, Johnny, get them out of the cabinet.
14:03Here.
14:12Here.
14:13This one has the same symbols and markings as the ones on the map bracelet.
14:17That's good.
14:18We'll just put it in another Chief's pillow here for a while.
14:21I don't understand, Javi.
14:22I'm just bathing a trap.
14:24I'll explain later.
14:26Well, Red, here we go again.
14:27Back to town.
14:29I'm getting tired of just riding and banging forward.
14:31Don't worry, this time you'll have plenty to do.
14:33See you later.
15:01Oh, hello.
15:04How are you?
15:05Here I am again.
15:06So I see.
15:07What can I do for you?
15:08Since Cassidy and me has finished her business down here in her head and home, I thought it
15:12might be nice if I bought a hat and take home to my sister.
15:15I'd be glad to help you pick one out for her.
15:17What is her coloring?
15:18Is she tall or short or?
15:22She's about my size.
15:23I'd say she's tall.
15:25Is she a blonde or brunette?
15:27I mean, what is she long like?
15:29She's like me.
15:30She's a little prettier.
15:33Would you mind stepping over this way?
15:39How's this one?
15:41That's right, nice.
15:45No.
15:46Let's try that other one.
15:47How's this?
15:55Yeah, I'll take that one.
15:57Only, could you sew some more flowers on it?
16:00My sister just loves flowers.
16:02I'll do it right away.
16:05Chief Toll Horse had a mighty narrow escape.
16:08He's going to be laid up in bed a long time.
16:10My brother and I will have to get out to see him one of these days.
16:14Does anyone have any idea who shot him?
16:18Cassidy figured it might have been someone who had a feud with the chief in the old days.
16:22That's a possibility.
16:26Red was playing the dumb, talkative numbskull perfectly.
16:30And it looked like Betty was falling for it.
16:36Funny thing about that bracelet that disappeared.
16:39What's funny about it?
16:42The chief told us that it had something to do with a map or something.
16:45But it wasn't any good without the other one.
16:47What other one?
16:50The other bracelet the chief has.
16:52Somehow, it's no good without the other one to complete the map.
16:56Leastways, that's the way I understood it.
16:59That sounds very interesting and exciting.
17:02Have you seen this other bracelet?
17:06Yep.
17:07The chief keeps it under his pillow.
17:10It's the right pretty thing.
17:11Well, it's a little bracelet about this big.
17:14It's got a lot of doodads, tracings and marks on it.
17:19Some of those old Indian bracelets are beautiful.
17:21I'll have to ask the chief to show it to me someday.
17:23There.
17:26That does it.
17:31You ready to leave for Twin Rivers?
17:33Yep.
17:34How much is it?
17:35Eight dollars.
17:36For that little hat?
17:38I only paid six for mine.
17:40Women's hats are more expensive.
17:41Pay the lady.
17:42Your sister's gonna love that hat.
17:45It's been a pleasure meeting you and Red, Mr. Cassidy.
17:48Well, come on.
17:49We got a lot of riding to do before dark.
17:51Goodbye.
17:51Goodbye.
17:51Goodbye.
17:52Goodbye.
17:52Goodbye.
17:52Goodbye.
18:21We circled around the town and hid out where we could watch the road to the reservation.
18:33Betty and her brother hadn't wasted any time getting underway.
18:51Brett and I cut across the hills and headed for the reservation.
18:53Goodbye.
18:54Goodbye.
18:55Goodbye.
18:56Goodbye.
18:57Goodbye.
18:57Goodbye.
18:58Goodbye.
18:58Goodbye.
18:59Goodbye.
18:59Goodbye.
19:00Goodbye.
19:00Goodbye.
19:01Goodbye.
19:02Goodbye.
19:03Goodbye.
19:03Goodbye.
19:04Goodbye.
19:05Goodbye.
19:06Goodbye.
19:07Goodbye.
19:08Goodbye.
19:09Goodbye.
19:10Goodbye.
19:11Goodbye.
19:12Goodbye.
19:13Goodbye.
19:14Goodbye.
19:15Goodbye.
19:16Goodbye.
19:17Goodbye.
19:18Goodbye.
19:19Goodbye.
19:20Goodbye.
19:21Goodbye.
19:22Chief?
19:27Come in, Miss Perry.
19:31I'm so glad to hear that you're going to be all right.
19:33I brought you some things to eat.
19:35Thank you for coming.
19:37How does it happen that you're here all alone?
19:39Only until nightfall.
19:41Johnny had to ride to the lower reservation as a sick child.
19:45Here, let me make you more comfortable.
19:50There. That should be better.
19:53Now you have both bracelets.
19:56Evil woman, the tongue of a snake.
20:00This time make sure.
20:02Drop your gun, Turner.
20:04All right, Red, search him.
20:07Walked right into it, didn't you?
20:08I should have known anyone as ugly as you are couldn't have a sister.
20:12Here it is.
20:12Put it in your pocket.
20:13All right, get moving, you two.
20:15I'm taking you down to the lower reservation to await trial.
20:21Hold it, Cassidy.
20:22You're not taking anybody anyway.
20:27So you're in on this too, huh?
20:29There are smart people in this world beside you.
20:32When I heard your name last night, it rang a bell.
20:36So I began checking up and I found out you had the right to act as U.S. Marshal.
20:40Right after you told me you were coming out here, I found out he sent a telegram asking about you.
20:46So I took no chances.
20:48Well, now that they all know what's what, we'll have to get rid of them.
20:51I figure we might have to.
20:52Go get your ropes.
20:54And the dynamite and fuse out of my saddlebag.
20:57All right, inside.
20:58The five-minute fuse the sheriff had set was only seconds away from the dynamite.
21:15There's a scalpel of my bag on the table.
21:17If we could only get it.
21:20Well, we can try.
21:20Don't worry about getting those ropes cut, Red.
21:39I'm afraid your sister isn't going to get her hat.
21:43Right now, I ain't worrying about my sister's hat.
21:46A little more.
21:48A little more.
21:48Come on, let's go.
22:14We're going down to the lower reservation.
22:16Get a posse ready.
22:18I'll be all right, my son.
22:24Ride with our friends.
22:26It is my wish.
22:32It had taken but a short time for the Indian agent to gather some trusted men and we headed for town.
22:37All right, you and the agent go to the side door.
22:57Johnny, you go to the back window.
22:59You two stay in front.
23:01Come on.
23:01You two stay in front.
23:33Just as I thought.
23:36The second bracelet was just a trick to lure us into tipping our hands.
23:40This bracelet gave me all the information I needed.
23:43Now, Betty and I will each file on a homestead right here.
23:47Sheriff, you and your men can file on the surrounding sites.
23:51Take a look at these sites first.
23:53Get your hands up.
23:55Now it's a surround.
24:01All right, get over there.
24:04Now just take all this stuff along and it'll save the engineers a lot of trouble.
24:07Come on, get on your feet.
24:09Get out of here.
24:11It'll be a long walk to the jail I'm begging you to.
24:15Well, Chief, the engineers have turned in their report and the drillers are ready to go to work.
24:19Soon your tribe will prosper as never before.
24:22Thank you, Frank Cassidy.
24:24I shall see to it that the money is wisely spent.
24:27I'm sure you will.
24:28Goodbye, sir.
24:29Goodbye.
24:30Goodbye, Johnny.
24:31Hoppy.
24:32Well, Red, this time we're heading for home.
24:35Okay, Hoppy.
24:36Yeah?
24:36What am I going to do with this hatch?
24:40I paid eight dollars for her.
24:41I'll give it to your sister.
24:43Oh, you know I ain't got no sister.
24:45Well, maybe you will have a sister.
24:47How am I ever going to have a sister?
24:48I haven't even got a father and mother.
24:49Well, just to save any argument, I'll give you the eight dollars.
24:52Oh, you keep it.
24:54I've had eight dollars worth of excitement out of it.
24:59Here.
25:00There's a present for you.
25:01Maggie, two feet.
25:09Goodbye.
25:10Goodbye.
25:19There he goes, on his way, down the moonlit trail to where Cowboy's Ray.
25:33Hop along, Cassidy.
25:37Hop along, Cassidy.
25:39He'll return soon again.
25:43There's no use to say goodbye until then.
25:47Hop along, Cassidy.
25:51So long, hop along.
