00:00So excited to be chatting with you. And you just have so much that you're doing and so much coming up. So I just kind of want to jump right in. Tell me about it. And actually, I purchased a few today. Your affirmation tracks, because I think that it's so it's such a great idea, honestly. And so tell me about how you came up with this. And just, yeah, a little bit about what you're working on.
00:27Yes, great question. So I've been using affirmations to help shift my mindset, improve my day, remind me of what's possible for about eight years. And that's been one of my go to tools that supplement those strenuous moments or moments of anxiety, confusion.
00:48And what I realized is that a lot of the affirmation playlists and tracks that I heard and found felt a little cheesy, they felt a little, they didn't resonate with my practical needs of the moment.
01:04So I started curating specific topics and themes that pertain to my personal journey. And once I had an entire album that I was using on my own, I started sharing that with friends. And then I realized, if this is effective for me, perhaps it could be effective for someone else.
01:23And so we started identifying the greatest needs that everyone shared. And we assembled 15 tracks so far.
01:32And what's been really beautiful and healing and empowering is to see people utilize the tracks for a week at a time or a month and come back and share how maybe it helped intercept, you know, that negative spiral that they're used to going down in certain circumstances.
01:54And, and, and, or people were sleeping better because it was calming. And, um, I also am a fan of finding things that work for you. And sometimes telling yourself that you need to sit still and meditate for 10 minutes in silence is not the easiest, but if you can throw on this track and even stretch, um, it's a great way to start your day and your day, you know, lunch break. It's kind of just there for you. So like your, your personal cheerleader.
02:24Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. And so for those who don't know, what is the power of an affirmation? Why do people use affirmations and how does it help change your thinking, your journey, your life?
02:37Right. So, you know, a lot of us might have heard that we are largely operating unconsciously throughout the day. Um, and that requires some deeper work, maybe through cognitive behavioral therapy or different, um, modalities.
02:54Now affirmations aren't some magic cure all they're also not going to eliminate the truth that we are complex humans and we have light parts and shadow parts and easy things and difficult things. So it's not, it's not really an escape from what is it's, it's a tool to strengthen, um, and build resilience for whatever you are experiencing in that moment.
03:22And so framing things in the affirmative form, meaning instead of saying, I'll never do that again, finding what is the positive version of, I'm going to choose this instead.
03:35It actually starts to create this, um, virtuous cycle of new thought patterns. And at any time of the day, we already have an inner voice or kind of a self tape, um, speaking to us. So this helps remind us and hear what our current tape is and then improve it so that we start generating the kind of fruit we want to see, whether that's more joy or more confidence.
04:03Um, so for me, um, so for me in a way, it's kind of an accountability partner affirmations tend to feel more uncomfortable. Uh, the deeper your counter belief to that, uh, topic is, especially for me, for example, things that have to do with abundance.
04:20Um, we're very awkward and, um, um, we're very awkward and odd, um, because I had such a competitive scarcity mentality growing up. Everything was vicious and, um, you know, who gets the role if they get it, I don't get it.
04:35And so now to embrace this idea of, oh, there's enough for everyone. It's a, it took some time, but it's, it's brought a lot of beauty and it actually has freed me to be more generous with my resources, um, with other people. So yeah, it's a kind of can meet you where you are and just fine tune your thought life.
04:56Mm-hmm. And you, with the affirmations have launched classes, um, movement classes, they're called, correct? And you are starting to do a platform that you have now created. Um, so tell me just a little bit about this.
05:15Yes. So I am offering affirmation workouts. There are 15 minutes, 15 moves, and a whole lot of affirmations because I like to offer something for the mind and body simultaneously. Um, I think we are whole people and we tend to treat fitness and movement, um, as something that, that sees the body as an object to, uh, fix or a project to complete as opposed to a center point.
05:45Of who we are and a source of intelligence. Um, your body is speaking to you all day long, whether we're listening or not is, is maybe, you know, the relationship we get to repair. Um, so that same passion for mind, body connection is what inspired movement genius, uh, my company that I co-founded with my sister.
06:05And we work with licensed somatic psychotherapist to create movement programs that specifically help people improve their mental and emotional health. So you don't have to show up and put on your workout cap and push yourself. It's really, how can we meet you where you are?
06:25No equipment needed, no equipment needed, no high price tag, um, no barrier to entry, your natural ability, your natural language of movement, your mood, your energy level, bring it all and allow movement to help you process, release, express whatever you might need in that moment.
06:43Yeah, I do think that the, the connection between your mind and body, especially when you have a goal of say weight loss or, you know, getting healthier with, you know, loss in mind, it's really important because without one, you know, you can't just lose and, and have your mind stay the same.
07:05It is a full mental journey. And so I think that having something like you're doing is going to be really beneficial, especially for a lot of women.
07:15I sure hope that this empowers people the way we have witnessed it, empowering our early users and testers and, um, community members.
07:26It is really phenomenal to see the transformation and the lasting impact for us.
07:34It's about people having their personalized toolkit. So in any moment, they never have to feel alone or incompetent or, um, overwhelmed by the feelings and thoughts and sensations.
07:51Um, you know, um, you know, a lot of us have had to reshape how we view our mind and body in this past year.
07:58And for some of us, it's felt like a foreign land and you're, you're inhabiting it for the first time and you're starting from scratch for others.
08:07Maybe it's second nature and you love the skin you're in and you celebrate yourself daily.
08:12And either, either of those cases still means it's an active and living relationship and life obviously is, you know, coming in waves and it ebbs and flows.
08:25So being able to create your own anchor and sense of grounding is very, very empowering.
08:32And honestly, I think it's kind of our lifeline when we see just how technology and the pace of culture, everything is so accelerated and, um, we could very easily disconnect and just live neck up or just be so driven by sensation that we don't know how to integrate.
08:53And, um, you know, make our best decisions and, um, and find our, our greatest expressions and who we are.
09:00Um, there's a lot to deconstruct as well as, um, explore and discover.
09:06And we want to be able to, to offer that space to do that.
09:10Um, and you can do it alone or you can do it with, with friends.
09:13So, you know, that's the nature of it.
09:15It's very, it's very free and, uh, it's very humanizing.
09:20Mm-hmm now tell me about the people within this community that you are cultivating.
09:26Um, you are so inclusive, you are so open, um, and just who is, who is joining, um, Movement Genius?
09:35Yes, we are so thrilled with our founding faculty of instructors.
09:44Talk about the highest caliber of human humanity.
09:49It's, like, so beautiful.
09:51Um, and they have a very varied cross-section of identities, abilities, disabilities, um, some with chronic illness.
10:03Um, some people who, uh, specialize in creating programs for people of all body types.
10:11Um, inclusivity and accessibility are far more than buzzwords for us.
10:17They're fundamental.
10:18They're foundational.
10:20Um, and I wouldn't feel right building our company any other way.
10:27So, um, we're really excited to offer programs, um, for, for everyone who has a body.
10:34And we open, you know, open up conversations and receive feedback regularly.
10:40Um, and we know that as we continue to grow, we'll be able to expand and offer more courses and classes and experiences.
10:48Um, but yes, the, the buzzwords of accessibility and inclusivity, uh, really have practical meaning from the core design of our platform.
10:59Even utilizing certain fonts that are more readable for people with, um, for example, dyslexia, um, really going to the granular levels to be intentional.
11:11And, uh, it, it ends up actually creating these very dynamic experiences.
11:18Because you see, you just, you just know everyone can find something that works for them.
11:24Um, and that's really exciting.
11:27That's the kind of world we want to see in the world we want to create.
11:30So, um, it's our job to, to do that at, at every step within our company.
11:36And I feel like you specifically, from what I've been seeing on TikTok, have been kind of reaching out to your community and to your fans to share this, this passion and share what you, um, are building.
11:51Can you tell me a little bit about your, um, I don't know, TikTok world?
11:56I think you're so good at it.
11:58You seem like you have so much fun.
12:00I appreciate that feedback.
12:03Um, you know, I feel a little bit lost in the TikTok landscape.
12:09However, the three pillars for me are movement, mental health, and motivation.
12:16And so I like to have one of those elements in most posts.
12:20Of course, there are also just fun, everyday, uh, silly trends to, to try out.
12:27But I think what's beautiful is seeing that people are, for example, taking 30 second breaks with me during some of the rest stops.
12:35Um, maybe you were viciously scrolling and now you've actually taken a moment to reconnect with your breath and, um, just interrupt some of that reactive, uh, brain patterning.
12:45And there are also affirmations if you want to just check in and, and see what the affirmation of the day is.
12:52Um, and then we also talk about the upcoming classes.
12:55So if we're doing, for example, a workshop on movement for stress and anxiety, I'm able to throw up a TikTok and, uh, with a sign up in bio.
13:06And we actually had 300 people, uh, join for a class recently.
13:13And that was really powerful.
13:15All around the world, all walks of life, it was, it was powerful.
13:21That's incredible because I think that social media has honestly become, it started as a place for connection and it's become the opposite of that.
13:31It's almost become just like a war zone in my opinion.
13:34But to hear that you can get a sense of community and connection on your own platform through social media is really like one of the beautiful remaining things.
13:47For sure.
13:48And I think we see with other apps like Clubhouse that there's a little bit more intimacy.
13:52There's, you know, potential for greater connection and even civility maybe.
13:58Um, but I, I think you kind of have to, you have to practice what you want to see on the platform and you have to be really mindful of how you're engaging with who you choose to follow, what you choose to like.
14:12You know, your eyeballs are being measured.
14:15Your attention is being measured by algorithms, by companies.
14:19And we do have a responsibility as consumers to, to recognize, even though we think we're privately scrolling, we're actually, we're actually contributing to what kinds of content gets spread further, um, or faster.
14:34Um, and I think that's also liberating and empowering to know that if we want to build better communities, we can start by modeling that as well as looking for accounts who are already, um, doing that.
14:47And there really are, if, if you're, you know, listening to this and watching this and you're like, where are these cool people on Instagram?
14:54Like, I follow some of the coolest humans, at least they're, they seem cool to me.
15:00Yeah.
15:00And, um, they're just super informed and super engaged, dynamic and people first.
15:08Um, and that's, that's really beautiful to find because otherwise, yes, you can, you can just fall down rabbit holes.
15:15Now I will say the one that brought me so much joy the other day was you recreating your Missy Elia dance from however long ago.
15:25And I have to ask, is that just like muscle memory or did you have to watch it and be like, okay, yeah.
15:32That one is definitely muscle memory.
15:35I didn't film it more than once and I didn't practice before I hit record.
15:40Um, I was talking with a friend and they said, you should do this.
15:44And I literally opened my phone and was like, all right, I'm putting no more than 15 seconds of thought into this.
15:51And, uh, it's in the body.
15:54Talk about memories being stored in the body.
15:58That one is, I'll be doing that with my walker one day.
16:01Oh gosh.
16:02I would love to see that.
16:03Um, and then finally, I, I also have to ask while we're on Tik TOK about the cheaper by the dozen, you know, Tik TOK reunion that you all did almost a year ago, which I can't even believe.
16:17Um, I know.
16:19Tell me how that came together and just has the cast chatted since, um, are you guys in contact?
16:24Yes.
16:25So Kevin Schmidt, who played Henry and, uh, Brent and Shane, the little twins who are not little anymore.
16:32Um, we were all chatting.
16:33We've stayed in touch and, uh, we wanted to do something meaningful and memorable, um, that brought people together during a time when we, we felt very isolated.
16:44And, uh, we also thought, how could we turn this into something that's impact oriented as well?
16:49So we got, um, involved with no kid hungry and it turns into a fundraiser.
16:55So you were able to watch the content and make a donation on the spot, I believe just by like tapping and, um, we raised, I forget how much, but you know, not a small chunk of change.
17:08Like it was fairly significant and we knew that it would go viral because it's amazing to see, you know, everyone this many years later.
17:20Um, but we wanted to make sure there was a cause behind it and that we were thinking about, okay, if it's, if it's our family wanting to say hello to you, what can we do to, to serve your family at home?
17:32It was so, I have chills thinking about it.
17:34Um, it was just so fun and, and going back into those characters, um, and reminding everybody.
17:40Yeah.
17:40With, with family.
17:42I think that's so beautiful.
17:43We got almost everyone.
17:44There were a few people who weren't free and we were trying our best, but yeah, of course the comments were like, where's so-and-so?
17:51And I'm like, if you knew how, how much coordination this took.
17:55Like, exactly, exactly.
17:57I mean, gosh, to be able to get everyone and to get into those old positions and the hats.
18:03And I mean, how did you still have that?
18:06Isn't that incredible?
18:07I don't know what it is about that hat, but I think I'm going to have it forever.
18:12So I happened to be moving at that time and it was in a box full of home videos of all things.
18:18And, uh, and then Kevin reached out and I said, no way I have the frog hat.
18:22Like this is going to have to happen.
18:24I think he had his hats as well.
18:27Yeah.
18:28Everybody looked pretty much exactly the same, like plus a few years.
18:32Um, plus, I mean, you're going to be in the walker doing Missy Elia dance with the frog hat.
18:39That's just what it's going to be.
18:41I mean, from your lips to the future, I'm, I'm there.
18:45I'm game.
18:46Amazing.
18:47Um, well, Alison, thank you so much for your time today.
18:51Congratulations on everything that you're doing.
18:53I can't wait for your platform to launch, um, and just keep doing what you're doing and helping others.
19:00It's really inspiring.
19:02Yes.
19:02And if people are interested, um, just go to at movement genius on Instagram and click
19:09follow, we're going to have content rolling out.
19:12And we also have classes that we're doing already.
19:14If you want to be a part of the beta groups, um, we totally welcome feedback.
19:18And like we said, it's, it's for everyone with a body.
19:21So if you want to reconnect with yourself, if you want to reduce stress, if you want to find
19:28new ways to feel better, improve your day, um, please.
19:32We totally welcome you in the movement genius community.
