00:00The Ohio State Buckeyes have won the national championship, and Notre Dame season comes up
00:17one game short.
00:22It's tough, man.
00:23Like, there's not a lot of words to say when you lose the national championship, and what
00:32you all have done for this university is something special.
00:38We love you, man.
00:40And we're going to continue this thing on.
00:46The spirit of Notre Dame is a will to win.
00:58It's when things are difficult, and people invoke the spirit of Notre Dame to bring them
01:03out victorious.
01:06Those wonderful words of the fight song, all Notre Dame will win over all.
01:09Don't forget, man, today, today, we're going to win.
01:14You can't walk the campus at Notre Dame or pray at the Grotto or gaze at the Dome without
01:19knowing that there is something special in this place.
01:23It seems to float across the whole campus on Saturday afternoons.
01:27We thank God for this wonderful spirit.
01:34We hope the blessing of Notre Dame and the spirit of Notre Dame continues to reach you wherever
01:39you are.
01:43Amen.
01:45Take the field.
01:47Hurry up.
01:48Welcome, everyone, to Notre Dame football 2025.
01:52The mindset going in 25 is no different than 24.
01:55It's to reach our full potential.
01:59What are we doing with Notre Dame?
02:00We got CJ Carr.
02:01We got Kenny Minchie.
02:02We've got a battle that is not decided.
02:05We've got to make a decision here soon.
02:06We're going to be our starting quarterback.
02:09How's it going, Irish fans?
02:13And Notre Dame has lost the season opener.
02:15The last year of fluke.
02:16Are you guys a real meal?
02:18Don't hide from it.
02:19We're 0-2.
02:21Defense, we got to step up.
02:24Don't blink!
02:26You know, we ask prayer from tomorrow when he takes the field.
02:28I am.
02:29No, no, no.
02:29No, no, no.
02:30No, no, no.
02:31It's extremely meaningful to play here.
02:34It's been a lifelong dream.
02:35I always wanted to play Notre Dame and, you know, never thought my dad would be there
02:38to watch you play.
02:40Another touchdown for Jadarian Price.
02:43Everything happens for a reason.
02:45God always has a plan.
02:46Woo-hoo!
02:47My mom always told me that.
02:49Let's go, Irish!
02:52Let's go, Irish!
02:53Stay off!
02:55Stay off!
02:56Come on.
02:56Streaky for the end zone!
02:58That's what we needed!
02:59Is Notre Dame done?
03:01The answer's no.
03:03They do have to run the table.
03:05We're letting you win a victory!
03:06Let's go!
03:07Let's go!
03:07Let's go, Irish!
03:11Here come the Irish!
03:13It's the first day.
03:41This is my 16th first day at camp, and my fourth as a head coach, so, again, you know what
03:52to expect, but it's still the first day.
03:55You know, you get those first day jitters, excitement, ready to get after it, but it's
04:00the start of a, it's really the start of the season, right?
04:03The start of a new year.
04:06For me, I love to get up early and get into work just so there's a time you have to yourself.
04:13I get to be a little bit selfish and work out, really be unbothered a lot of times, you know,
04:24kind of get my mind in the place it needs to be to be the leader that I desire to be.
04:28We love him, he respects us as much as we respect him, he'll do everything he can to lead us
04:37to be the best that we can be, whether it's on the field or off.
04:39Coach Furman, as a leader, he's the do-it-first guy.
04:46He's always going to be there for you, he's a player's coach.
04:50I love the game of football, the greatest game in the world, man, the game of football.
04:55You get to compete, you get to play hard, you get to play physical, and ultimately,
05:01you find ways to win.
05:03There's a winner and a loser in everything you do, and we got to find a way to win.
05:09Everybody good?
05:25Here we go.
05:30Ready, ready?
05:32Last couple things, I'll put this, just a reminder, okay?
05:34This is understanding, it's going to be a bumpy road, okay, on this journey.
05:39I was thinking about the freshmen that don't know what you don't know.
05:42You don't even know, this day one, you're going to be like, what the hell's going to happen?
05:46I don't know, you're probably nervous and all those things, and dudes have been here
05:49for six years, five years, four years, like, here we go, day one of fall camp, right?
05:53So everybody's at a different spot.
05:55It's okay.
05:56It's okay.
05:57Let's go practice, right?
05:59That's all it's about, okay?
06:00Don't worry about anything else, and I'm finished with this, right?
06:02There's a lot of noise.
06:03You're going to walk out there, there'll be more cameras, more people.
06:06But we put the hard work, put this program in position, that's why people are there.
06:11Everybody good?
06:11Find a way to get better on this journey, man, right?
06:14That bumpy road is the journey of you.
06:17Everybody on the same page?
06:18We got to get better today.
06:19Finally, we get to go and compete a little bit, all right?
06:21And that's what we're all here for.
06:22Everybody good?
06:22Let's go to work.
06:23TGS on two.
06:23One, two.
06:24TGS.
06:24All right, boy, rock and roll, huh?
06:37All right, let's go, lead them.
06:38Lead them, lead them, lead them, lead them.
06:39Let's go, lead them and show them how it's done.
06:41All right, old head, let's go to work.
06:42Lead the group, all right?
06:45Fall camp is truly the grind.
06:47It's the one moment where there's no school, there's no really outside influences.
06:52It's just about football.
06:53Here we go, let's go.
06:56Basically, you're up at between five and six.
07:00You got either treatments, tape, breakfast.
07:04Then you got two hours to two and a half hours of meetings.
07:07Then you go practice.
07:09Hell yeah.
07:09Let's go.
07:10And then you get a small break.
07:12And then you come back for probably another six hours of meetings.
07:18And then you got to do it all over again.
07:20Chin that thing.
07:21Chin it.
07:22It's either the most fun time in football or the worst.
07:27It really depends on the day.
07:30You get challenged personally, mentally, physically.
07:33And you got to be able to strive through that and work through that.
07:36Because it's going to grind on you the same way the season would.
07:38You want it to hurt.
07:43You want it to stress you out.
07:46Like the biggest lie in football is that you're going to feel good and things are going to work out.
07:51You're going to have something you've got to overcome.
07:54You can face some real demons.
07:57And sometimes in your mind you feel like, I can't do this no more.
08:00I can't do it.
08:00I can't do it.
08:02That's the demons talking.
08:03You don't even supposed to listen to them.
08:04You can do this.
08:05You can succeed.
08:06This is the opportunity to take reps, get better.
08:10Every single day you're competing.
08:11It's not yet win or lose.
08:15I know in the first couple of practices there's going to be a lot of bad mouthing, a lot of talk back and forth.
08:19But it's going to be up to us to find our identity, what works for us, and how we're going to move forward.
08:24The last part is competition, right?
08:26There's a lot of jobs for stake.
08:28It's about being available for practice.
08:30It's about going out and stacking days consistently and executing.
08:34Those are the things I think that makes training camp special.
08:36CJ versus Kenny, I'm telling you guys, it's a close battle.
08:45Quarterback competition is real.
08:46Everything I've gathered, whoever we pick, we're thrown to the wolves.
08:49And they're going to have to be ready.
08:51We better make a right decision.
08:57A true quarterback battle is when you genuinely don't know who's going to be the starting quarterback heading into fall camp.
09:03The physical skills are what jump out with CJ Carr.
09:08The arm, the ability.
09:10CJ Carr is a guy who came in with a lot of expectation.
09:14A guy who I frankly thought would push Riley Leonard a little bit last year, maybe.
09:20There was so much hype and so much expectation.
09:23And for Michigan fans, surprise that someone with the Carr last name ends up picking Notre Dame and not Michigan.
09:29So, Lloyd Carr is one of Michigan's great coaches.
09:33Won a national championship in 97.
09:37And CJ Carr is his grandson.
09:39So, you're talking about college football royalty and a name that everyone knows.
09:46Minchie is more of the mobile quarterback threat.
09:49So, he brings a little bit more of a dual threat perspective to the offense, similar to what Riley Leonard had last year.
09:55The natural ability and the skill set is there.
09:57I think it's tough to be around a quarterback battle, especially if it's really even.
10:06At the end of the day, we've got to go out and win football games.
10:08The guy who we trust the most is the guy who's going to get the starting job.
10:14It's going to bring out the best in both of them.
10:16That's what battles are for.
10:17That's what competition's for.
10:18It's to bring out the best.
10:20Let's go, man.
10:20Let's go.
10:20Let's go.
10:21Both are going to work their tails off to put themselves in the position to be the guy.
10:25Put this in the end zone.
10:26Let's go.
10:26Let's go.
10:27Kenny does a great job in preparation.
10:29He's going to know the offense inside and out.
10:31He's also going to know the defense inside and out.
10:35On me.
10:36From physical tools, Kenny's a super accurate passer.
10:41Has the athleticism to create some problems for a defense with his legs.
10:47He's never going to be too high, never going to be too low.
10:50He's always going to be playing the next play, which I think is important in a quarterback.
10:53CJ, he's going to put in the work.
11:00He's going to have the install done.
11:01He's going to know the defensive install for the day before I even get in there.
11:05I got the corner, you got the shallow.
11:06You got the OTB, you got the over shallow.
11:09Yeah, Jack!
11:11CJ's got unbelievable arm talent.
11:16CJ is a gunslinger.
11:18There's not a throw, a window that he thinks is too tight.
11:22He believes in himself, believes he can make those throws, which guys love.
11:27It's going to be an epic battle.
11:29They both understand the game.
11:31They work at it.
11:32They prepare.
11:33They both see it.
11:34They both have really good arms.
11:36Now, they're both inexperienced in terms of real game experience.
11:39And so, they're more similar than they are different.
11:42Being a quarterback at Notre Dame is one of those positions that I think everyone wants
11:48and envies and dreams about.
11:51But when you're in it, it's a lot of pressure.
11:54You're the shortstop for the New York Yankees.
11:56Everybody in the country is going to know exactly who you are.
12:00You know, if things go good, you're going to get a lot of praise.
12:02If things go bad, you and Coach Freeman are going to have to sit on that podium and answer why.
12:06Day one, some good, some bad.
12:08Appreciate the way you came out here with tension and focus.
12:10Let's get back to work.
12:11It is a bumpy road, and the faster we can take a bad play and get like this, guess what?
12:17That's how fast we elevate.
12:18Coach is going to yell at you.
12:19I told you yesterday.
12:20We're going to yell at you.
12:21Okay?
12:21We're going to coach you hard.
12:23Take it, reload, and go for it.
12:25Last thing I had is just a leadership.
12:28Guys that have been out here, guys that are leaders, lead.
12:30Right?
12:30Lead.
12:31It's your responsibility to make those guys around you and the guys that you're leading better.
12:36It ain't about just leading yourself.
12:38You've got to make this dude better.
12:40Whoever this dude is.
12:41Good?
12:42Good work, man.
12:42Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
12:44You got it, Bill?
12:45Let's go.
12:45Hey, TGS out to you.
12:46One, two, three.
12:47TGS.
12:47Good work.
12:48Good work.
12:48Good work.
12:49Good work.
12:49Brotherhood.
12:57And Brotherhood.
12:59brotherhood there's a lot of different words to describe what brotherhood is
13:08but what you guys have to understand is we practice right the competitive spirit
13:16and that is such a crucial part of having success we want but if we don't have the
13:25love for each other the brotherhood the team first mentality if we don't have that we're
13:33not gonna reach our full potential and you have to believe that to build the brotherhood to build
13:40the culture of this program I'm a part of something bigger than myself great teams have
13:48great players they have great schemes and they got great brotherhood and love for each other
13:58I think this year's Notre Dame team the expectation is to do right about what they did last season
14:06they should be able to compete for a national championship they're not going to surprise
14:11anybody they're not going to be able to fly under the radar like they did last season
14:14the pieces around that program and just what we've learned of the Marcus Freeman era I think
14:21is going to lead to really high expectations you're going to be able to lean on the run game
14:26arguably the best running back room in the country and I think the best individual running back in the
14:32country in Jeremiah love it's a freak show Jeremiah love I've never seen an athlete like him before
14:49Jeremiah is just a difference maker in every way possible
14:53the whole world has seen what he can do with his legs hurtling people trucking people making people
15:03miss love's the best to me he's the best running back in the country because he's got the wiggle he's
15:09got the juice he's got moves love is something that we haven't really seen at Notre Dame he's a home
15:14run threat every time he touches the ball you can try and game plan for him he's just that good that
15:20I don't think it matters he's gone I think he's the best player in the country without a doubt
15:25Jeremiah love has done it again I hear people talking about the Heisman I hear people saying I'm the best
15:31running back in the country in my mind I still haven't reached the level that I want to be at
15:36I just try not to listen to all of it because I know that people's opinions can change in a snap of a
15:42finger it's nice to hear but it doesn't really carry any weight until I prove it to myself it's gonna
15:50be wasting all your sprint yardage you know what I mean one of the most interesting storylines of
15:56last year was that Notre Dame was likable this is a program that no matter where you live in the
16:01country you're aware of them you've watched them and you probably rooted against them and they became
16:05so likable because of Marcus Freeman looky look have a good one all right he's cool he's young just
16:14really resonated with a lot of people who maybe had checked out or hadn't really noticed how much
16:20had changed since Marcus took over Shane was awesome to be able to shoot an Under Armour commercial with
16:32Shane Gillis to have that guy that a lot of our players love to follow he's a big Notre Dame fan
16:38hey be alert of the camera there good here we go hey what are you doing all right run the play
16:50here we go great run he didn't really go exactly off the script and so I had to be adaptable sometimes
17:00there's two whistles here we go another play here we go another play just same play he's a professional
17:05he made it easy same play same play run it back I didn't love it I would say Notre Dame has gotten
17:12a lot cooler don't be all sides now players always come in and out of college football and just the
17:18style of the game that it is now and Notre Dame is adapting to that style
17:21do it I think that commercial is going to turn out really good since we got him here I thought
17:35what else we might as well let him say a couple words to you right mr. Shane Gillis I got nothing
17:44I don't know what to say to you guys good good work today I like what I saw out there guys flying
17:49you like flying around yeah hell yeah uh no I don't know just a big fan hope you guys kill it this
17:56year again and uh yeah that's it that's awesome yeah appreciate you man thanks brother let's go get
18:02a break get a break get a break get a break all right I just wanted to get us together today to just
18:18kind of meet to go through some of uh our roster numbers what 2026 uh roster numbers will look like
18:25a lot of the major college football programs have hired general managers and now you're seeing them
18:32hire from outside of college football NFL experience other sporting experience famous alums like you're
18:39seeing a lot of different strategies for the general management position it's a totally different
18:45calculation that we've ever seen in college football before yeah it was funny I had to talk
18:51to the parents the other day and I was telling them my story and like my journey here and how I kind of
18:57through 20 something years I was praying to like reach the pinnacle of my career you know and try to
19:02make it to a GM job you know I thought it would be an NFL and not realizing the opportunities in college and
19:09how you know colleges now have all the GMs but then it was like I was telling parents I was like God also has a
19:14sense of humor too because he made me the GM during this crazy time the NFL has always had a model where
19:21the personnel department is separate from the coaching staff some of these head coaches make up to 10
19:26a million dollars and and I think because of that they're used to having full control over their
19:31roster full control all over everything just how's he been playing a little up and down um hasn't been
19:40hadn't been the greatest year for him the one thing he has done uh positively is I think he's shown a
19:46little more mobility than I thought but now you've got a GM who is coming in to help you potentially take
19:52things off your plate but you know how he's gonna win so I'm not I think the players will come you
19:58know he's a big body he's pretty consistent catching the ball I just you know he'll break some tackles and
20:05make things happen him and Devin are similar I think the best teams in college football the the elite of
20:11the elite still build through the high school recruiting ranks that's what a general manager's job
20:18purview is we're gonna run the scouting apparatus we need to get in that yeah for sure and that's
20:24either high school or portal yeah like there's no question about that right right we can't depend
20:30on those two to say no we have to get one more yeah we'd be in a bad spot if we did not replay you
20:38know we would have to look like that the NFL you know it's it's about what can you do for me right
20:45now college football it's all about development everyone knows look we're gonna win national
20:51championships here but you we're also gonna win off the field you know and then in so many different
20:56ways and so we just got to keep selling that because I mean that's just fact here you know if
21:01you're only football here it probably doesn't work I'm here to help construct a roster but as much as
21:07I'm here for that I think you know I'm here to help develop young men prior to come coming here I did
21:13not realize how significant you know that was and that is and I didn't realize how crucial that is to
21:21this role cool all good all right appreciate it thanks
21:24hey let's give the a round of applause for oh the mentalist thank you coach
21:44fighting Irish Notre Dame people say I can read minds but you're ready for the truth can't read
21:53minds I read people every right now talk is cheap hold up your left hand good good good everybody imagine you have an
22:02invisible deck of cards in your hands and you spread them out nice and wide you see every single one of those cards and everyone right now look back and forth

28:19my good here we go
28:34Everybody good?
28:42Here we go.
28:49Ready, ready?
28:51Good, man.
28:51Hey, I want to talk about leadership really quick.
28:54Some people want to be called leader, but they really don't want to lead and influence others.
28:58They just want the title.
28:59They want this position of being a leader, but they really don't want to influence other people.
29:05You shouldn't want a title that you're ineffective at carrying out the role, and that's okay.
29:09You should allow somebody else to lead.
29:11Real leadership's uncomfortable.
29:13Real leadership's uncomfortable.
29:15How you lead during tough times affects how people see you.
29:19If you're strong, if you're strong and courageous during high-pressure, tough times, people will feel your influence.
29:27If you're inconsistent during tough times and lose self-control, you lose control of your mind and yourself during tough times, people will lose trust in you.
29:38Influence starts inside first.
29:41You can't convince somebody to believe something if you don't believe it inside of you first.
29:47If inside of your heart you believe more in individual glory, you believe more in what's best for me than the team, then don't try to be a leader and convince people to put team before me.
30:04It's phony, and people will see it over time.
30:08To have influence on something means to change it.
30:11Being named a captain isn't about wearing a C on your chest.
30:14Being a named captain is a responsibility to influence those that you lead in the right way and to make the group better.
30:21The C is a reflection of the influence you have.
30:24So if you want that responsibility to be a captain, okay, and you're in your junior or senior year, then you'll come up here and stand and say,
30:35hey, I want the opportunity to be a captain, okay, so if you want the opportunity to be voted on, to be a captain, come up.
30:45Let's go.
30:48Be sure.
30:50I don't want this to be something cool.
30:51I want this to be, like, really, really, really sure.
30:54Like, you sure.
30:55It's a lot of responsibility.
30:56So here's what we'll do.
30:59Pass out the ballots.
31:03To be a captain at Notre Dame is one of the greatest honors anybody could ever receive.
31:09Trying to emulate my brother, he was a captain at Notre Dame.
31:12And so I'm trying to be my best that I can be to try and reach that standard.
31:17Whether it's 60 years down the line or it's right now, if you tell someone you're a captain at Notre Dame, their eyes will light up.
31:23To be a captain, period, is amazing, but to be one at Notre Dame, it just, it gives you a pride, a sense of loyalty, a sense of just, you're really doing it for the guys around you.
31:31And so if I am a captain, it would be one of the greatest honors of my life.
31:35All right, appreciate that.
31:36Appreciate that.
31:37We'll tally him up, and then we'll announce it later today.
31:42You know, if you're a captain, you have to set the standard, and you have to be able to, you know, know when to really yell or not yell,
31:50who to talk to and how to talk to them.
31:52Love to your mock-up face-off.
32:00Weberman.
32:01Being a captain at Notre Dame is like being a president, I feel like.
32:05No matter what happens, no matter the situation, people are going to look at you to do the right thing and have your head in the right space.
32:12A shooter.
32:12I think being named a captain here is, is one, is a reflection of the respect your peers have for you.
32:23It's a extremely high standard.
32:28It's a challenge to live up to the expectations of being a captain.
32:34All right, take a knee.
32:40The numbers were interesting, but basically there was six, and then there was a huge, it was a separation between after six, all right?
32:51So I had to make a decision, I'm going to cut it at four or go to six, and I made the decision to go to six, okay?
32:56And so I want you, I'm going to name the captains, have you come up here, and then you guys can address the team once everybody's up here, okay?
33:03Um, Drake Bowen, Billy Shrouth, Adon Shuler, Will Pauling, Emile Wagner, and Donnie Heinisch.
33:11Come on up.
33:16It means the world to me, guys.
33:17It's holding me accountable.
33:18I'm going to take this with a lot of responsibility.
33:21Um, a lot of honor.
33:22Love you guys.
33:23You guys are all my brothers.
33:25I love you to death and to earn your respect is the greatest honor I could have ever received.
33:28I love you guys, and let's do this thing.
33:29This is by far the greatest honor of my life, to serve you guys in any way possible.
33:34Man, I love it to death, and thank you all, man.
33:36I love this team.
33:37Love you guys.
33:37Go Irish.
33:39I really appreciate you guys voting for me.
33:41This place means the world to me, and I promise you guys I'm going to come in here and bring the right attitude, the right mindset,
33:46and hold all you guys accountable.
33:47I ask you guys to do the same for me, and I love you guys.
33:48Go Irish.
33:51This is the greatest honor for me to earn the respect of every one of you.
33:54I love this team.
33:55I love this place.
33:56Everything I'm going to do is for you guys.
33:57I hope you guys hold me accountable.
33:59The way I'm going to for you guys, so thank you.
34:04Greatly appreciate you guys.
34:05Just like they said, we're going to come in here and work every day, man, and like they said, bro,
34:09I'll get the shirt off my back for each and every one of y'all, and I'm glad y'all ready to go to war.
34:13Let's go.
34:15You know, I just want to make sure you six guys understand it's not about the title.
34:21It's not about wearing a C, but the responsibility you guys have.
34:25You've been voted to be the captain, so now you have a huge responsibility to make sure you lead this team in the right way.
34:31Everybody understand that?
34:31Good.
34:32Congratulations, man.
34:33Congrats.
34:33Congrats.
34:36What are we doing with Notre Dame?
34:37We've got CJ Carr.
34:38We've got Kenny Minchie.
34:39We've got a battle that is not decided.
34:42Competition at the quarterback spot is really, really healthy.
34:47Come on.
34:48Damn.
34:48More than anything, I think what I expect to see is someone that can use his tools, that he has, his God-given ability, that can communicate effectively.
34:59If you were calling a play, what's the first play you'd call down there for yourself?
35:05That's what I'm looking for.
35:07Ernie W fade.
35:11And switch bluff hook.
35:13Not necessarily getting into a mindset where they feel like they've got to win the game.
35:19I certainly don't want a game manager.
35:21I want someone who's playing up on their toes and aggressively.
35:24But at the same time, there's a lot of people around them that can make plays, and it's their job to make sure they're getting the ball to the right guy.
35:32Fourth and three to five.
35:36First call.
35:38Ernie W H.
35:41Switch bluff hook.
35:42You don't have to name a guy going into week one.
35:45Whoever that guy is is going to have to earn it.
35:47You know, I'm excited to see what they can do.
35:50I think the sky's the limit for both guys.
35:52Just remember, right, early in the deal in particular, first downs, first downs, first downs, first downs, first downs, first downs.
36:00Right?
36:00Let's gain momentum.
36:02Let's get the ball out of our hand.
36:03Let's just be decisive and move the chains.
36:05In a room where only one person plays at a time, I tell myself all the time, like, I'm rooting for the guy next to me.
36:14Like, I hope everyone else in the room goes out and has a perfect day of practice.
36:18Every day we can continue to just come in here with appreciation that, you know, I get to be in this situation, in a competition, at the best university in the world, and we get to play alongside the best players in the world.
36:32Why are you with the quarterback competition?
36:39How close are you to Nathan Astro right now?
36:41We're still in a competition.
36:45We'll go back and evaluate today's practice today and make a decision.
36:51We've got to make a decision here soon.
36:53I don't know when we'll make it.
36:54I don't want to put a timeline on it, but they've both been playing really, really well.
36:58In every, a lot of decisions I make, I involve people.
37:04I believe we have the best staff in America, and so how do you not take some of their opinions into account?
37:10Like, we'll talk, and at the end of the day, I have to make a decision.
37:16How are you doing?
37:17Good, man.
37:18You want to hear it?
37:19I'm good.
37:20Good.
37:21Stryce?
37:22Not really.
37:23Yeah.
37:23There you go.
37:24I hear it on social media, but I hear it, and I feel it, and I got to ultimately make a decision.
37:36I mean, it's never been, like, a closer competition, you know, than being a starting quarterback.
37:50You're going to be.
37:51You're going to be.
37:53There's a lot of things that went into why I made this decision.
37:59A lot of things.
38:01But this is the way I want to go, and I believe in you.
38:09Like, you have to understand, like, it's not about improving to other people that I'm the best.
38:14No, it's not.
38:15I'm just trying to reach my full potential, and that takes time.
38:20It takes what?
38:21It's going to take ups and downs.
38:23I know that.
38:24You're going to have some ups and downs.
38:26I'm believing you.
38:28I'm believing you.
38:31I want to follow you.
38:32The program is going to follow you.
38:35You're going to do great things, man.
38:37Appreciate you, Coach.
38:39You are.
38:39I'm proud of you, man.
38:40You care about these young men like they're your own sons, and to deliver news of disappointment
38:52to one and deliver news of excitement for another is a challenging thing to do.
38:57You good?
38:58Yes, sir.
38:59Good.
39:00I met CJ ten minutes ago.
39:03He's going to start.
39:05And it was a tough decision to make because both of you all deserve a start.
39:14There's a lot of factors that played into my decision to say, okay, we're going to start CJ.
39:22Right now sucks.
39:23I understand.
39:25I get it.
39:26I'm bending your shoes as a coach and as a player.
39:29Like, I get it.
39:32It will pass.
39:33And I can't say anything right now to make you feel better.
39:37But I know when it dies down, there's going to be a point.
39:42I know it is.
39:43I know it.
39:44I choose to believe this.
39:46But there's going to be a point where I look at you and I'm going to tell you.
39:48I told you.
39:51This is just delayed gratification.
39:54It's one of the hardest decisions I've made in my life.
39:56And for sure, as a head coach, one of the hardest decisions I've made.
40:03Kenny, it was a difficult meeting.
40:05You had to deliver news of disappointment.
40:08I think if it ever becomes easy, you know, you might be in the wrong profession.
40:12I appreciate you.
40:17Yes, sir.
40:18All right.
40:18Yes, sir.
40:34Real quick, I wanted to grab you guys for one quick second.
40:37I met with the quarterbacks and I told them, let them know, CJ will start, okay?
40:43I told them both, we're going to need both of them.
40:45They know that.
40:46I thought it was important that you all hear it first because it will be out on social media
40:51and all those different things.
40:52And you guys don't understand sometimes being in that position, everything's a big deal.
41:01Everything's a big deal.
41:01I told both of them, this is an example for both guys and for our entire program of delayed
41:10gratification, right?
41:13We name you a starter, you're great.
41:15It feels great in the moment, but you have to understand delayed gratification because
41:21that's temporary.
41:22If you don't understand that you have to continue to put in the work, right, to fulfill that
41:29title of being a starter, then you won't be a starter for long.
41:33And that goes for everybody in this room.
41:35I remember this.
41:36I remember being named the head coach here.
41:38That moment was one of the greatest moments of my life, but it was a temporary moment.
41:44People see, oh man, you're the head coach.
41:46It's great.
41:46And quickly I learned the value of delayed gratification.
41:50The very first game we lose.
41:54What's the lessons I got to learn from?
41:56Hold on.
41:56I got to fulfill this title that I have.
41:59And it took three losses in a row to learn just a little bit more.
42:02But then you got to value delayed gratification.
42:07This too shall pass for Kenny and a lot of other guys, okay, that aren't getting what
42:16they want right now.
42:18But you have to value delayed gratification if you want to get over this and be better
42:23because of it.
42:25Everybody understand that, okay?
42:26So I thought it was a great opportunity just to make sure we understand this as a program.
42:31I feel like we always overreact to early season games in college football, but when
42:55you have a schedule like Notre Dame does this year, you actually are going to learn quite
43:00a bit about this year's team.
43:02And these are teams that have good defenses, and I think that's going to be part of it.
43:10As well as against Miami, you're going up against Carson Beck and all the experience that he
43:14had from Georgia, all he's got to prove at Miami.
43:18There's just a lot of storylines.
43:19If you've got to get somebody up for week one, you know, they don't have a pulse.
43:24You're the only show in town on that Sunday night, prime time.
43:29Everybody's going to be watching you in that spot.
43:31I think it's going to be huge.
43:32I feel like the team is kind of getting ready for week one and kind of realizing that, you
43:38know, it's about to get real, and, you know, we're not fall camp anymore.
43:41It's time to kind of come together as a team, and, you know, it's not offense, defense, it's
43:45Notre Dame.
43:46We know who we're playing Sunday night, 7.30 p.m., Hard Rock Stadium.
43:51Let's roll.
43:51With tradition comes responsibility.
43:53Let's talk about the history real quick.
43:55I think if you're a fan of college football, you understand the game of 88 and how important
44:03that game was and the rivalry that really entailed.
44:07There have been hostilities between these two schools, bad feelings.
44:11At that time, those two teams were at the top of college football, so naturally there's
44:16a rivalry.
44:17That ugly humor was down there in the end zone.
44:20Pushing and shoving broke out.
44:22There was some kicking.
44:23History is something that comes if we're in the gold helmet.
44:27We take a lot of pride in it.
44:29This one in specific, it holds a little bit of a bad blood.
44:34We've won.
44:35We've lost.
44:35It's always a big deal, and it matters, and it matters in the grand landscape of college
44:41football.
44:4287 at Miami.
44:44Notre Dame lost 24-0.
44:45Miami won a national championship.
44:4888.
44:48Notre Dame wins 31-30.
44:50This play is about to explode.
44:52Wins a national championship.
44:53The next year, at Miami, Notre Dame loses 27-10.
44:57Miami wins a national championship.
44:59So three years in a row, the winner of this game won a national championship.
45:03Sunday night is here.
45:04We still got five days, right?
45:06So let's take care of today.
45:07Everybody good?
45:08Let's go to work.
45:08TGS on two.
45:09One, two.
45:10TGS.
45:10Before you come to Notre Dame, it's nothing personal with Miami or USC or any other team.
45:16But as soon as you step on campus, you have that relationship where, okay, I have to hate
45:20this other team.
45:21Like, it's something personal.
45:22So that's how we're entering this season is personal.
45:25You know, this ain't your grandpa's Notre Dame.
45:28We're a different team.
45:30Everyone here has been looked down upon at least once or twice in their life.
45:33Everyone has fought for something.
45:35And so I think that gives us an edge that we didn't have before.
45:37And I think that this team is going to honor that tradition.
45:43When I put that gold helmet on, I know everybody is looking at us.
45:46And, you know, we have to hold the standard.
45:48All the people that came before us, all the history, the legacy, like, it's in my hands
45:52at that moment.
46:04How's classes going?
46:06And how many are actually going right now?
46:07They're going good.
46:08I mean, for me, I got all my core classes now, so I hired.
46:12School's pretty important at this point.
46:14Yes.
46:14I got to pass them.
46:16All right, so what do you got?
46:18Finance-wise.
46:19Right now I'm in corporate finance.
46:21That's your only finance class?
46:22Well, and macro finance and portfolio strategy.
46:27That's good.
46:28That's a lot of numbers, though, throwing at me.
46:31That's what a calculator's for.
46:32Huh?
46:33That's what a calculator's for.
46:34Yeah, I wish a calculator solved it all, but it don't.
46:36You know, you have all the emotions racing before a game, but being able to sit down and,
46:41you know, talk with your family and people who have been around you your whole life, it
46:44brings a sense of peace and, you know, calmness to you.
46:46I'm just hoping that tomorrow you guys can now hit somebody else.
46:53Oh, yeah.
46:53And all the fighting.
46:54That's how we talk about it, yeah.
46:55I mean, you go through all fall camp and summer, it's just you're going against your guys.
46:59And it gets a little heated, too.
47:00That's the part.
47:01Like, you feel a little hostility in the locker room with you guys.
47:04Like, now everyone comes together at this point in the season, and we all just go for it.
47:08So that's a question.
47:09Are you guys now friends?
47:11Yeah.
47:12How do we feel about tomorrow?
47:14I feel good.
47:15Probably going to storm.
47:16There's been bad weather around here.
47:18Yes.
47:19On and off.
47:19Florida typical, which you know.
47:21Yeah.
47:22Growing up for me, you know, I've always been around football, especially being from the
47:25South Florida area.
47:26My dad was a coach when I was younger, so, you know, I pretty much got right into football.
47:31You can't not get good from being from South Florida, you know.
47:33I was a Dolphins fan, but, you know, I wasn't really into college football game yet.
47:37You know, obviously, all family around me, friends, they all love the U, so, you know,
47:41it meant a lot going into that game.
47:43Our wide receiving room, I think it's going to be a big test for us.
47:46Oh, big time.
47:47If they stack the box, and essentially they're saying, I don't trust that your receiving
47:53room and car can beat them.
47:55Man, it's going to be a fun game.
47:58On paper, it looks great.
48:00You guys just got to go deliver.
48:01Yeah.
48:02Right now.
48:03Was last year a fluke?
48:05Are you guys a real deal?
48:09They've been with you throughout your entire life.
48:11You know, they've watched you play countless games from when you were little to now, and
48:15they know pretty much all about you, so, you know, they bring you back down to the ground,
48:20you know, allow you to get out of your own head and, you know, get away from all those
48:23emotions and, you know, lock in for the game.
48:28Three receivers to the bottom, one to the top.
48:34It's Gilbert alone for Carr.
48:37The offense hasn't looked terribly sharp.
48:40Takes the shotgun snap.
48:41Carr looking right.
48:42Now spins out of the pocket.
48:43Pressure.
48:44I was on the other side of the field, and then I see CJ running around the backfield,
48:48and, you know, I'm trying to get open for him, but I didn't really know where he was
48:50going.
48:50Oh, he's running back to the 30-yard line, keeping the play alive.
48:54I see him running across the field on the other side, and then he's looking to the middle
48:56of the field, and I'm looking, too, and I'm like, I don't really see no one in the
48:59middle of the field.
49:01Carr looking downfield.
49:02Fire!
49:05Touchdown!
49:06Micah Gilbert!
49:08What a play by CJ Carr!
49:10And he hits a no-look to Micah wide open in the end zone, and it was just like, yeah,
49:15this boy's a baller.
49:16You know what I'm saying right here?
49:18Yeah.
49:18Go the way.
49:19Go the way.
49:21Heck of a first touchdown pass.
49:23Let the legend begin.
49:27Now for Miami, they feel momentum going to the Irish.
49:30They want it back.
49:32We knew going to that game was going to be a really good team.
49:34Feels like a really important defensive stand is coming here for this Notre Dame defense.
49:38They're very well coached.
49:39They have good running backs.
49:40They have a good quarterback.
49:42Carson Beck is really smart, so giving him time to develop in the pocket became an issue.
49:48You've got to stop that underneath crosser.
49:50It is just killing Notre Dame's defense.
49:54Applying the pressure was, you know, a big thing, and when we weren't able to do that,
49:58he was able to kind of pick us apart.
50:00Game is tied at seven, deep in the second quarter.
50:02Beck takes a shotgun snap.
50:04Pressure coming.
50:05Has to get rid of it.
50:05Throws to the end zone, and it's caught!
50:08Touchdown, CJ Daniels.
50:11It looked like it could have been picked, and Daniels came out of nowhere to bring it in.
50:17Let's go, man.
50:20Let's go.
50:20As an offense, you know, we're not a team that's going to back down.
50:28Carr turns, runs into Williams, now throws.
50:30He has base on, who makes the catch, and walks into the end zone for a touchdown.
50:36Just like that, it's a one-score game.
50:38We're not going to back down, no matter, you know, what point in the game it is, and then,
50:42you know, we're going to have that no-quit mentality.
50:44Three minutes, 30 seconds to play.
50:46Shotgun for Carr, takes the snap.
50:49He's going to run up the middle, and drop the five for the end zone!
50:52He's in!
50:53CJ Carr runs in for a touchdown, and the Irish can tie the game with an extra point.
51:02CJ was great.
51:04He showed what he can do.
51:05He's a dog on the field, off the field.
51:1047-yard attempt coming for Davis.
51:12This is for the lead.
51:14Drives it on its way, and the kick is good!
51:19And Notre Dame has lost the season opener.
51:22Wasn't our best football, and, you know, it wasn't what we wanted to display to everyone that was watching.
51:28Going off the field obviously sucked.
51:31We lost.
51:32When you go through a tough-fought battle like that, and see your guys down, it's heartbreaking.
51:38I personally, you know, I think that as I failed it, I failed them.
51:41I didn't do the best that I could, or play the best that I could.
51:46But I made sure to keep my chin held high, because I didn't want to give them the satisfaction that they defeated me.
51:51Credit to them, we lost a three-point game to a top-ten team, okay, in a battle.
51:58And we know damn well we could have won that game and should have won that game, right?
52:01We got a damn good ball team, but we got to get back to work.
52:04This taste of pain hurts, the embarrassment, okay, we got to use this as we go back to work.
52:08Proud of the way you guys played, man.
52:10A loss like that fills us, obviously, and I feel that really carries a team, and I think we'll carry our team, you know, to the end of the season.
52:18Go to work, stay together, and we'll get it fixed.
52:20Everybody good? Keep your heads up.
52:21Here we go.
52:22Hey, TGS out to you!
52:23Watch you!
52:23TGS!
52:24TGS!
52:54See you!
