00:00:07Tonight, American Idol reaches a crossroads in the competition.
00:00:12Who makes it through to America's vote?
00:00:15We have to cut from 30 to 20.
00:00:18It's hard.
00:00:19It's time.
00:00:20Let's do it.
00:00:21So rise.
00:00:23A brand new round.
00:00:26The Ohana round is all about family.
00:00:28I dedicate this song to you, Papa.
00:00:30This song's for my mama, my daddy, my son, my grandpa, my lovely mother.
00:00:35I can't look at her too long or I will immediately cry.
00:00:37I think it's harder to perform in front of your family.
00:00:40It's like a different kind of pressure.
00:00:45Expect unforgettable voices.
00:00:47Emotion laid bare.
00:00:49Every time I see my boy while I'm singing, man, it gives me an extra boost.
00:00:52I love you, boy.
00:00:54But this time, the judgment goes beyond our panel.
00:00:57Three groups will be charged with making some critical decisions.
00:01:01The idols themselves, Ohana, their family, and a panel of top music influencers and pop culture tastemakers.
00:01:10The song is not big enough for that voice.
00:01:12I absolutely loved her tone.
00:01:14I know she has it, and I wanted to see it so bad.
00:01:16I think she nailed it.
00:01:19Each group will vote for the performance that moved them most, earning the winners a platinum ticket that takes them
00:01:26straight to America's vote.
00:01:28Let's hear it one more time for the platinum ticket winners.
00:01:31Then, the judges decide who earns the final spots in the top 20.
00:01:36My favorite is over here.
00:01:38I will fight for her.
00:01:40You better get her right now.
00:01:42It gets to you that your journey could come to an end.
00:01:45Whose lives will change forever.
00:01:48From Aulani, a Disney resort and spa in Koalina, Hawaii, this is American Idol.
00:02:12Lionel Urichie, please give a warm welcome to my friend, Mr. Lionel Urichie.
00:02:18Let's keep it going for Mr. Garrett Underwood.
00:02:31Music is one of the most important parts of Hawaiian culture and our ohana, our families.
00:02:37Our ohana surround us with love in good times, in bad times.
00:02:44But you know what?
00:02:45There is no greater gift that you can give to our ohana than the gift of song.
00:02:54Enjoy everyone.
00:02:55Aloha.
00:03:00Not a bad day at the office.
00:03:08My name is Jordan McCullough.
00:03:10I'm 27 and I'm from Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
00:03:14It's mesmerizing to watch you.
00:03:15Oh my God.
00:03:17We are in Hawaii.
00:03:18What is that?
00:03:19We're going from pine trees to palm trees, okay?
00:03:22This is different.
00:03:22All right, y'all, close your eyes now.
00:03:25It was only one show we came here for tonight.
00:03:30I would not be sitting here today if it wasn't for my entire family, mom, dad, grandma, uncles,
00:03:35cousins, to show up to places that I needed to perform or sing at.
00:03:41Now I get to live my dream.
00:03:43Yeah.
00:03:45Wow.
00:03:46That's crazy.
00:03:49Jesus, I haven't cried this entire time.
00:03:53Dang it.
00:03:56Man, it's going to mean so much to look out and see my family while I'm and dad there.
00:04:02Tonight, I dedicate this song as a tribute to my family.
00:04:05When I think of this song, I think of protection.
00:04:07I think of love and care.
00:04:09And so, here's grandma's hands.
00:04:11Oh my God.
00:04:13It's a great song.
00:04:22Grandma's hands clapped in church on Sunday morning.
00:04:28Grandma's hands played a tambourine so well.
00:04:33Grandma's hands used to issue out a warning.
00:04:38And she said, baby, grandma understands that you really love that man.
00:04:46Put yourself in Jesus' hands.
00:04:50Grandma's hands ended.
00:04:52Can we take it up a little higher, man?
00:04:56Ooh, oh, oh, oh.
00:05:01Grandma's hands used to bring me a piece of candy.
00:05:05Yeah, grandma's hands.
00:05:08Boy, they really, really came in handy.
00:05:11She said, daddy, don't chill with that boy.
00:05:16What you want us making for?
00:05:18If I get to heaven, I'll be looking for.
00:05:23Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
00:05:33oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:05:35Yeah.
00:05:38Yeah.
00:05:48Where did he come from?
00:05:50I don't know.
00:05:51Not a bad way to get things started.
00:05:54I don't know what happened to you in Hawaii, but let the congregation say amen.
00:06:01Amen.
00:06:04You delivered. Thank you. Fantastic. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank y'all

00:11:12You're all right.
00:11:13You're here because we love your voice.
00:11:15It is not about the little things that can go wrong during the performance.
00:11:20It really is how you shove it aside and finish strong.
00:11:25That's it.
00:11:26You got back on that horse and took off real quick.
00:11:30There you go.
00:11:35I think I just got lost in myself a little bit.
00:11:38You were so good.

00:12:02He can sing.

00:12:04My name's Lucas Leon.
00:12:06I'm 18, and I'm gonna be singing The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert.
00:12:09My parents are here tonight, and, uh, they're who really built me.
00:12:13This one goes out to my family.
00:12:21You know they say you can't go home
00:12:25again, oh, I just had to come back one last time.
00:12:33Ma'am, I know you don't know me from Adam, but these handprints on the front steps are
00:12:42mine.
00:12:45I thought if I could touch this place or a feeling, this brokenness inside me might
00:12:54start a feeling.
00:12:57You leave home and you move on and you do the best you can.
00:13:02Yeah, yeah.
00:13:03I got lost in this old world and forgot who I am.
00:13:14I thought if I could touch this place or a feeling, this brokenness inside me might start a feeling.
00:13:25Yeah, yeah.
00:13:27Yeah, yeah.
00:13:27I can't hear it till I come to someone else.
00:13:30I thought that maybe I could find myself.
00:13:38If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave.
00:13:43Won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me.
00:13:52Won't take nothing but a memory from the house that built me.
00:14:02Oh, my God.
00:14:07That was so good.
00:14:08Thanks for touching the end.
00:14:09Oh, now that was something.
00:14:12That's a true vocalist.
00:14:13I mean, you're so in control of your instrument.
00:14:17It's kind of mind-blowing.
00:14:19Thank you very much.
00:14:19And you have a really beautiful, just soft, sweet spot in your voice that I feel like just
00:14:26draws everybody in.
00:14:28So I would love to hear more of that.
00:14:31Yes, ma'am.
00:14:32There you go.
00:14:33There you go.
00:14:34Amazing.
00:14:37That song is just, it's such a sweet song and it means so much and, yeah, it was beautiful.
00:14:45Just knowing that his parents are here, hearing it.
00:14:48This is really special.
00:14:50I know.
00:14:50I can't.
00:14:52All right, folks.
00:14:52Here we go.
00:14:53Take your lockups, please.
00:14:54Stand by.
00:14:57What's up, guys?
00:14:58My name is Keilah Richardson.
00:15:00I'm singing A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, dedicating it to my lovely son.
00:15:04I want to let him know no matter how grown he gets, I'm going to love him forever.
00:15:09And every day we're getting one step closer to where we want to be.
00:15:20Heart beats fast, colors and promises.
00:15:27All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow.
00:15:36One step closer.
00:15:44I have died every day waiting for you.
00:15:49Darling, don't be afraid.
00:15:51I have died every day waiting for you.
00:16:19Darling, don't be afraid.
00:16:21I've died every day waiting for you.
00:16:21I love you for a thousand years
00:16:26I love you for a thousand years
00:16:32And all alone I believe that I would find you
00:16:38I just want your heart to me
00:16:40And I love you for a thousand years
00:16:46I love you for a thousand years
00:17:05To have the gift of watching you and getting to watch him
00:17:11Like, when I'm on stage and my boys are out there, I don't know what they're doing
00:17:14And I feel like I just got a glimpse of what they might be doing
00:17:17Wow
00:17:18And it just made my mom's heart so happy
00:17:21Your talent is limitless
00:17:24Thank you
00:17:25Thank you, thank you guys
00:17:27Wow
00:17:31Every time I see him lay eyes on him while I'm singing on that stage
00:17:34Man, it gives me an extra boost
00:17:36If God willing, I hope I make it to the top 20
00:17:39This is too hard
00:17:42It's difficult
00:17:44People really stepped it up to, you know, superstar level
00:17:47Everyone is amazing
00:17:49Sometimes before you can watch someone fly
00:17:52You have to let them hit rock bottom
00:18:01Hello everybody, my name is Braden Rumfelt
00:18:04I'm 22 years old and I'm from Murphy, North Carolina
00:18:09I was standing by my window
00:18:13On a cold and cloudy day
00:18:17When I was a baby, my dad would sit musical instruments at the bottom of our cribs
00:18:24And he felt like, you know, that was going to give us, like, these abilities, right?
00:18:28Which it might have, who knows?
00:18:29Will the circle be unbroken?
00:18:34Growing up in a family where it's cool to sing, you know, that's got me to this point
00:18:38If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be here, much less going to Hawaii
00:18:44For you to get here is, it's powerful
00:18:49You let your light shine before the world
00:18:53In the sky, Lord, in the sky
00:19:05Some people live for the fortune
00:19:11Some people live just for the fame
00:19:15Okay, alright
00:19:18Some people think that the physical things define what's within
00:19:28And I've been there before
00:19:32And that life's so full, so full of the superficial
00:19:40And some people want it all
00:19:44But I don't want nothing at all
00:19:47If it ain't you, baby
00:19:50If I ain't got you, baby
00:19:53Some people walk down the ridge
00:19:56Some just want everything
00:19:59But everything means nothing
00:20:02If I ain't got you, yeah
00:20:12Song's...
00:20:13Sing it
00:20:15If I ain't got you, you
00:20:18Some people walk it all
00:20:21But I don't want nothing at all
00:20:24And it ain't you, baby
00:20:28If I ain't got you, baby
00:20:31And some people are dying to read
00:20:34Some just want everything
00:20:37But everything means nothing
00:20:41If I ain't got you
00:20:50All right, all right, all right
00:20:53I'm better, I'm better
00:20:55Thank you
00:21:01Kids singing
00:21:01I feel like I just had the biggest smile
00:21:05On my face the whole time
00:21:07Your voice is just velvety and big
00:21:11You've got a lot of power in there
00:21:13And in all the right places
00:21:15Thank you
00:21:15It's good to see you all again
00:21:16Thank you
00:21:19Love you boys
00:21:21You know what, I like seeing his family
00:21:23And the connection is exactly
00:21:25That's exactly what I wanted to see
00:21:26I thought he had really great control
00:21:29And power to his voice
00:21:31But he hit a couple of rough notes
00:21:34Here we go
00:21:36Performing in front of the editor of Rolling Stone
00:21:39Geez Louise
00:21:40There's so many other eyes on us
00:21:42Who get a say in our future
00:21:44It's a little frightening
00:21:46Oh, come on barefoot
00:21:49I'm Hannah Harper from Southeast Missouri
00:21:52And I'm gonna sing a country classic
00:21:53That my grandpa used to sing
00:21:54To honor his musical legacy
00:21:56I'm really excited about the Ohana round
00:21:58To have the chance to honor my grandpa
00:22:00He was a patriarch
00:22:01So many branches of talented people
00:22:04That came from him
00:22:05He played music until the day he died
00:22:07Good music that we can all relate to
00:22:10As a family
00:22:11And we all play together at it
00:22:12And everybody likes it
00:22:14Bluegrass and gospel
00:22:15That's what keeps us together
00:22:17The legacy that he left was such a strong impression
00:22:20On my life
00:22:21I want to do the same for my kids
00:22:24I wish my grandpa was here to hear it
00:22:25My grandma's gonna be here
00:22:26And she's gonna be so thrilled
00:22:28Because it was his favorite song
00:22:40Because it was his favorite song
00:22:55You were no stranger to the rain
00:23:03You were no stranger to the rain
00:23:05Go rest high on that mountain
00:23:11Son, your work on earth is done
00:23:21Go to heaven a-shoutin'
00:23:30Love for the Father and the Son
00:23:37Love for the Father and the Son
00:23:38Go rest high on that mountain
00:23:45Go rest high on that mountain
00:23:46I love her tones this morning
00:23:48Son, your work on earth is done
00:23:54Go to heaven a-shoutin'
00:24:03The love for the Father and the Son.
00:24:27Gosh, there are so many parallels with your voice and Dolly and just, it's just so beautifully country.
00:24:36But just remember that key that you got to at the end and really live in that space because your
00:24:40voice really opened up there.
00:24:42You've got the goods and that was, your voice is so beautiful to me.
00:24:46Appreciate it, thank you.
00:24:48Got that straight, authentic mountain voice, boy.
00:24:53You can definitely see that she was missing something because she usually plays the guitar.
00:24:58But I don't know, I think she really delivered it and she felt like she was herself.
00:25:03I mean, obviously everybody can sing because they're here.
00:25:05But there's going to only be a handful that can make it to that star quality, you know?
00:25:10You're welcome.
00:25:10Say that again.
00:25:11What did you just, no, what did you just say?
00:25:13It was important.
00:25:14I said, would you go for the best singer or would you go for someone who you know would sell
00:25:19tickets, has a look and has a boast?
00:25:22These are the questions we have to ask ourselves.
00:25:31Hi guys, my name is Genevieve Hayward.
00:25:35Today I will be singing your song by Elton John.
00:25:38I picked this song today because the last time that my father was in Hawaii, he was on leave from
00:25:44Vietnam.
00:25:45Give it up for my dad.
00:25:46God, thank you for your service, Don.
00:25:49If I could give you the world, I would.
00:25:52But for right now, I'm just going to start with a song.
00:25:58It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside.
00:26:07I'm not one of those who can easily hide.
00:26:14I don't have much money, but boy, if I did, I'd buy a big house where we both could live.
00:26:28If I was a sculptor, could then again know.
00:26:38Or a man who makes potions in a traveling shot.
00:26:46I love that choice.
00:26:48Wow.
00:26:49That was so unexpected.
00:26:53My gift is my song and this one's for you.
00:27:00Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:27:03And you can tell everybody that this is your song.
00:27:10It may be quite simple, but now that it's done.
00:27:15I hope you don't mind.
00:27:19I hope you don't mind.
00:27:21I hope you don't mind.
00:27:21I hope you don't mind.
00:27:21That I put you down in the world.
00:27:27Sing it!
00:27:29Wow, wow, wow.
00:27:30How wonderful life is while you're in the world.
00:27:45What a boy.
00:27:47Identity is hard when you sing such an iconic song like Elton's.
00:27:51But for you to hang on and keep in control of that is amazing.
00:27:56Way to come out here and box, all right?
00:28:01Thank you, guys.
00:28:07I loved her.
00:28:08Listen, I always go for the rocker girls, and she nailed it.
00:28:12I really liked her energy.
00:28:14I loved her grit.
00:28:16I, like, honestly am, like, not an emotional person, but, like, I thought about my mom and
00:28:20dad and just, like, how they've literally been there for me since day one.
00:28:24Well, it's okay.
00:28:26Woo!
00:28:28Those parents are having to be extra parental today.
00:28:31Oh, my God.
00:28:33Hi, everyone.
00:28:34My name is Abby Amy Lewis, and I will be singing Rise Up by Andrea Day.
00:28:38I'm doing this song for my mother.
00:28:41She is a single parent, and life is not easy being a single parent.
00:28:45She has taught me to rise up against all things that I'm dealing with, and it inspires me.
00:28:51I know I can rise up.
00:28:53We will rise.
00:28:55We will rise.
00:28:57We will rise.
00:28:59We will rise.
00:29:04We will rise up.
00:29:07Yeah.
00:29:09We'll rise up.
00:29:11We'll rise like the day.
00:29:14Oh, rise up.
00:29:15Rise on the praise.
00:29:17Oh, rise up.
00:29:19And I'll do it a thousand times again
00:29:25For you, for you, for you
00:29:37For you, for you, we will rise
00:29:52Thank you
00:29:53Thank you
00:29:57Goozies!
00:30:00She's freaking 16 and she's like a Disney star, you know what I mean?
00:30:05And for a singer to have like that big belt and a beautiful head voice like that is so rare
00:30:11If the tide takes California
00:30:16I'm so glad I got to hold you
00:30:20My family has always been by my side throughout my entire music journey
00:30:24So it's really exciting to do this Ohana rap
00:30:28Till forever falls apart
00:30:33Till forever falls apart
00:30:37My parents have always sacrificed so much time and everything for this
00:30:41And it means so much to me that they're here right now and doing all this
00:30:44It really means a lot
00:30:45If the tide takes California
00:30:50I'm so glad I got to know ya
00:30:54And if the sky falls from heaven above
00:30:59Oh I know I had the best time falling into love
00:31:09And for a while you were all mine
00:31:14I spent a lifetime giving you my heart
00:31:18I swear that I'll be yours forever
00:31:20I'll be yours forever
00:31:23I'll be yours forever
00:31:28I'll be yours forever
00:31:29Till forever falls apart
00:31:35Oh
00:31:39Thank you so much
00:31:42Breath of fresh air
00:31:47How many are we getting rid of tonight?
00:31:49So there's 30 and we have to get down to 20
00:31:52Oh 10
00:31:53Oh God
00:31:53Yeah
00:31:56I'm worried
00:31:57There's a lot of talented people that are in this group
00:32:00Let's please give it up for Brian Thomas
00:32:06I can't point a finger at anyone I don't think is going to make it to the top 20
00:32:10Which makes it so scary
00:32:11This next song goes out to all the people that we've had to leave behind in order to pursue our
00:32:17dreams
00:32:18For this round I'll be singing Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
00:32:20This song is kind of about change
00:32:23I just recently moved to South Florida in the pursuit of love
00:32:27I hardly see anyone now
00:32:28I kind of lost my family
00:32:31It's just one of those seasons of life
00:32:34Hey bud
00:32:34You know I'm super proud of you
00:32:37Thank you
00:32:37I know how you've been dreaming about this your whole life
00:32:41Having you here
00:32:42And I just get to spend the time
00:32:50I miss you
00:32:52I miss you
00:32:53I miss you
00:32:54I miss being home
00:32:55I love you with all my heart
00:32:57You too
00:33:06Well I've been afraid of changing
00:33:12Cause I've built my life around you
00:33:21But time made you older
00:33:25Even children get older
00:33:29And I'm getting older too
00:33:36So take my love, take it down
00:33:45Come the mountain and turn around
00:33:50And if you see my reflection
00:33:55In a snow-colored hell
00:34:03Maybe the landslide will bring it down
00:34:10Oh, the landslide brought me down
00:34:25Thank you, Gus.
00:34:27Wow.
00:34:29Wow.
00:34:30Wow.
00:34:31Brian, well, before you sing
00:34:33I know talking to your family
00:34:35And telling them how much you love them
00:34:37Is emotional
00:34:38But we still gotta remember
00:34:40I got a song to deliver
00:34:41And I gotta make sure
00:34:43I'm knocking this thing out
00:34:44Start to finish
00:34:45Now, you're one of my favorite voices
00:34:47But it got a little screamy a little bit
00:34:50So just curb down
00:34:52Some of that over-raspy, gravelly stuff
00:34:55Thank you so much
00:34:58I was trying my hardest to get through this song
00:35:00And that just wasn't what the judges were looking for this round
00:35:03He was trying real hard
00:35:04He doesn't need to
00:35:06He did a really good job
00:35:07I'm so proud of you
00:35:08I'm glad my dad got to see it
00:35:10Cause it might have been my last performance of the idol
00:35:18Welcome back to Idol's Ohana Round
00:35:20Where Ray is hoping to make it to America's vote
00:35:23I was looking at the camera
00:35:25And I was like, this is so giving
00:35:26Love Island confessional
00:35:27It is
00:35:29Hi, everyone
00:35:30My name is Ray
00:35:32I'm gonna be singing
00:35:33I'll Be There by the Jackson Five
00:35:35Yes
00:35:35I wanted to dedicate this song to my sister
00:35:39My heart
00:35:39My soul
00:35:40Everything
00:35:41My sister Jamie
00:35:42Is one of the most important people in my life
00:35:45She's the only person that really understands me
00:35:48And what I'm going through
00:35:51I just love you so much
00:35:52And this is for you
00:35:53My promise to you that I'll always be there for you
00:35:55So sweet
00:35:57A sister's love
00:35:58Ain't nothing like a sister's love now
00:36:01You and I
00:36:02Must make a pact
00:36:07We must bring
00:36:08Salvation
00:36:12Okay
00:36:13Where there is love
00:36:18I'll be there
00:36:23Oh my God
00:36:26I'll reach out my hand to you
00:36:30Come on, girl
00:36:31I'll have faith in all you do
00:36:37You better sing the song, then
00:36:39Where there is love
00:36:43I'll be there
00:36:50I'll be there
00:36:51I'll be there
00:36:52I'll be there to comfort you
00:36:54There's my world of dreams around you
00:36:58I'm so glad I found you, baby
00:37:01What is going on
00:37:02I'll be there
00:37:03With a love so strong
00:37:06I'll be a story
00:37:09You know I'll keep
00:37:15I'll be there
00:37:18There's my world of dreams around you
00:37:21I'll be there
00:37:28I'll be there
00:37:36I'll be there
00:37:38I'll be there
00:37:46I'll be there
00:37:47There you go
00:37:48Sing it, baby
00:37:49I think America's gonna be there
00:37:51I think so
00:37:52You always just command the stage
00:37:55So perfectly
00:37:56Such confidence
00:37:58And I tell you
00:38:00You are one of our exceptional voices
00:38:03That we have
00:38:03It's just really awesome
00:38:05To watch you be able to tell your sister
00:38:08How much you love her
00:38:10And you are a serious contender
00:38:12That was a great performance
00:38:14Thank you so much
00:38:17I love my sister so much
00:38:18I'm just
00:38:19Seeing her
00:38:19Just gave me
00:38:20All the nerves went away
00:38:22She came out
00:38:23Handbrakes off
00:38:24No stops
00:38:25Just went in
00:38:26And I loved it
00:38:26Love it
00:38:27So good
00:38:31Thank you guys so much
00:38:33I'm Jake Thistle from New Jersey
00:38:34And I'm playing a song called
00:38:36Sleep on Me
00:38:36Which is an original
00:38:37It was really important for me
00:38:38To play an original
00:38:39During this round
00:38:40Because my parents and my family
00:38:41They've always been
00:38:42Really supportive of me writing songs
00:38:44When I was really young
00:38:46A family friend played guitar
00:38:47And he gave me one
00:38:49Because I was a toddler
00:38:50And it made noise
00:38:52I started gigging
00:38:53When I was nine years old
00:38:54And my parents drove me
00:38:55To every gig
00:38:55Until I could get my license
00:38:56It meant a lot
00:38:57To have that foundation
00:38:59They're not here physically
00:39:00With me in Hawaii
00:39:00But my parents do know
00:39:02That I'm dedicating this song
00:39:03To them
00:39:03It's going to be really special
00:39:05These hours aren't meant
00:39:07For conversation time
00:39:09Well, I'm confident
00:39:11Yep
00:39:11It's too soon for tomorrow
00:39:13Too late for tonight
00:39:16That's why I'm shaking
00:39:18And pacing
00:39:19Like I forgot my life
00:39:23And I wrote the show
00:39:25And I've lived the light
00:39:28The sky looks so vacant
00:39:33On these kind of nights
00:39:37It's gone when you're placing
00:39:43Your cautious hand in mine
00:39:48Forever maintaining
00:39:53The illusion that we
00:39:55Are going to be alright
00:40:00So sleep on me
00:40:01Sleep on me
00:40:03One day I'm going to get it right
00:40:06Sleep on me
00:40:07Sleep on
00:40:08I'm going to make it up
00:40:10To you kind of guy
00:40:12I'm trying to be
00:40:13Trying to be
00:40:15Someone who you like
00:40:17Oh, sleep on me
00:40:20Sleep on
00:40:21I'm a stranger
00:40:22Back to side
00:40:24Hey!
00:40:26Wow!
00:40:27Thank you so much!
00:40:28I appreciate it, thank you
00:40:29I felt like I was at his show
00:40:31I love it
00:40:32Yeah
00:40:32Alright, Jake
00:40:33So you know you took a big chance
00:40:36Keep those vocals
00:40:37Just as you started out
00:40:38At the beginning
00:40:38Strong
00:40:39Keep it all the way through
00:40:42But as a songwriter
00:40:43To a songwriter
00:40:44You did well
00:40:45Thank you so much
00:40:46Really kind of you guys
00:40:47Thank you
00:40:50You could hear him in a studio
00:40:53And like
00:40:54Lock him right there
00:40:55It's like watching
00:40:56Young Bruce Springsteen
00:40:59There you go
00:40:59Paul Simon
00:41:00There you go
00:41:01Dylan
00:41:01I don't know
00:41:02He ain't the artist
00:41:02He's an artist
00:41:04Sleep on me
00:41:05Sleep on me
00:41:07Sleep on me
00:41:10Can't see
00:41:10I liked it
00:41:22I'm Brooks
00:41:23I'm from Bel Air, Maryland
00:41:25I'm going to be singing
00:41:26Everywhere, Everything
00:41:26Because family is everywhere
00:41:28And they mean everything
00:41:31Aww
00:41:32Yeah
00:41:36I love this song
00:41:42Two bodies
00:41:43Riddled with scars
00:41:46From our pretense
00:41:48And you're twine in a car
00:41:51Stirty bike scene
00:41:53Stare at a driving screen now
00:41:59It's been a long year
00:42:02And all of our books
00:42:04Pages dog ear
00:42:07We write out the ends
00:42:09Of our wrong steer
00:42:11And forget to read
00:42:16This is one of the most unique voices
00:42:18I've ever heard in my life
00:42:20Yet the sun was collapsing
00:42:26Until the seas rose
00:42:29And the buildings came crashing
00:42:36Everywhere, Everything
00:42:39When I love you
00:42:41Till we're food for the worms to eat
00:42:43Till our fingers decompose
00:42:48Keep my hands in yours
00:42:53Yes
00:42:53Try slowly
00:42:56Know every route in this county
00:43:00Maybe that ain't such a bad thing
00:43:05Tell you where not to speak
00:43:13Everywhere, Everything
00:43:15Love you
00:43:17Till we're food for the worms to eat
00:43:20Till our fingers decompose
00:43:25Keep my hands in yours
00:43:32Keep my hands in yours
00:43:34Keep my hands in yours
00:43:36Win, win, win
00:43:39What did they miss?
00:43:42It's me
00:43:43Oh, bruh
00:43:46Every time you open your mouth
00:43:48And sing
00:43:48I want more
00:43:49I feel like
00:43:50We've seen you already
00:43:52Like kind of stepping in
00:43:53Getting a little more confidence
00:43:55In yourself
00:43:55Just keep leaning into that
00:43:57And it's so fun to watch
00:43:59And it's so fun to listen to
00:44:00Thank you so much
00:44:07Thanks, bye
00:44:10Charlie
00:44:14I'm obsessed with her
00:44:15So unassuming
00:44:16And I watch this crowd over here
00:44:18They weren't expecting that to come out
00:44:19What kind of alien, unexpected, crazy voice was that?
00:44:24Where'd that voice come from?
00:44:26I've never heard a tone like that
00:44:32Welcome back
00:44:34As our Ohana round continues
00:44:36Lionel checks in on the families
00:44:38I love watching this, boy
00:44:40I don't
00:44:41It's just agonizing as parents
00:44:43Who might be struggling with tonight's decision
00:44:45To award one platinum ticket
00:44:48I don't know what y'all are going through
00:44:49But hang in there, y'all
00:44:51I know
00:44:52They're all doing so incredible
00:44:54Yeah
00:44:54Everyone's doing amazing
00:45:10You better sing it, you better sing it
00:45:13Thank you so much
00:45:14Big voice, love you
00:45:15Well, we are keeping tabs on everybody
00:45:17On that piece of paper
00:45:18So we're going to vote based on our notes
00:45:21We're very serious
00:45:22I'll tell you, it's very difficult
00:45:25And the second platinum ticket decision
00:45:27Belongs to the industry experts
00:45:30The truth is, everybody deserves a shot
00:45:32The talent is so high
00:45:33That everyone literally deserves this
00:45:35But who are we going to give it to?
00:45:37It ain't about how fast I get there
00:45:41It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:45:46It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:45:54It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:45:54It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:46:00The third platinum ticket will be chosen by the idols themselves
00:46:04I just see exceptional talent, and I just don't know how I'm gonna narrow that town at all. I don't
00:46:12I don't know
00:46:22I just
00:46:34I
00:46:50It feels insane to be in the top 30
00:46:52There's a lot of pressure knowing that ten people are gonna go home one two
00:46:56Yeah, it sounds good my dad for this round suggested photograph by Ed Sheeran Ed Sheeran has always been one
00:47:02of my favorite singers
00:47:02He had a stutter when he was younger, and he's been super open about it. It's crazy. It's like the
00:47:08perfect song
00:47:08I relate to it in so many ways. I'm dedicating this song
00:47:12to my grandpa
00:47:14He passed away six years ago, but he was a photographer and he spent so much of his life
00:47:20capturing the most important moments of other people's lives
00:47:22I just felt like I could really be myself around him and we could laugh with each other
00:47:33Even though he can't be here taking pictures of me. I know he's watching right now
00:47:39Looking back at photos of him reminds me of the love that my whole family shared with him
00:47:43I'm gonna be thinking about him and just reminding the world of how how great he was
00:47:55Loving can hurt
00:48:00Loving can hurt sometimes
00:48:05It is the only thing that I know
00:48:12It is the only thing that makes us feel alive
00:48:23We keep this love in a photograph
00:48:28We make these memories for ourselves
00:48:32When our eyes are never closing
00:48:35Hearts are never broken
00:48:37Time's forever frozen still
00:48:41So you can keep me
00:48:44Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
00:48:49Holding me closer till our eyes meet
00:48:54You won't ever be alone
00:48:58Wait for me to come home
00:49:02Wait for me to come home
00:49:07Wait for me to come home
00:49:19Wait for me to come home
00:49:29Under the lamppost back on 6th street
00:49:34Hearing you whisper through the fold
00:49:40Wait for me to come home
00:49:45Oh my god
00:49:48Oh my god

00:50:54in a long time on this music journey of mine um sorry sorry um sometimes in life when you are
00:51:07not handed the right cards and put in the right family with the right people um
00:51:14you have to build your own family and your own home and that's what ohana is to me so uh
00:51:19i'm really grateful to be here and thank you for having me and uh thank you for being my little
00:51:23family here with me i'm singing to build a home by patrick watson it's about building that home for
00:51:35yourself that place where you don't feel alone i think a big reason why i've come to american idol
00:51:40is that i've found that for myself and i've built my own ohana so it feels like the perfect song
00:51:45to
00:51:45celebrate everyone that's made that happen there is a house built out of stone oh this is a place where
00:51:59i
00:51:59i i don't feel alone oh oh this is a place where i i i feel at home
00:52:24and it does
00:52:48um

00:53:56so sorry you good yeah i'm good i'm good you have so much talent and range and power in your
00:54:08vocals i feel like your brain just gets in the way i feel like you're kind of building up some
00:54:15walls in front of us every time you sing but you don't need to do that because you're enough
00:54:22thank you you're here that was some words of wisdom right there it's just going to be a mind game
00:54:30i
00:54:30have to kind of uh work through i don't know the industry's been really nasty to me i've had to
00:54:37put walls up for a long time um i think that what is going to come out of this experience
00:54:44for him
00:54:45he'll actually find himself yeah carrie that was good you better preach that was so that was that
00:55:03my name is julian kalel i'm 19 years old from el paso texas and i wrote this song called surrender
00:55:09i auditioned with this song for my very very first audition my family was there feels like it was only
00:55:15yesterday that i was in that room with those judges when i wrote the song surrender i was
00:55:19really really down so i went to my dad and he told me that anxiety the fear whatever's out of
00:55:27your
00:55:27control let it stay out of your control it's not worth your fear he was the one that said surrender
00:55:34surrender those feelings not only were we able to help him reach lighter place it actually turned into
00:55:42a song to see him arrive on this stage this is everything that we've prayed for i just want to
00:55:57dedicate this song to you papa thank you for always being by my side through my absolute worst and my
00:56:02best and i love you love you michael
00:56:05hi he kissed the cross
00:56:25there's a hole in my chest knock me down lay me to rest
00:56:35i drown my thoughts with kerosene bring my fears to my soul oh wow i'm tired of fighting tired of
00:56:47keeping up the side
00:56:49now i'm a couple ties in memories of putting up so i surrender
00:56:57i'll hold you for the time i have waged i'll raise a flag
00:57:01fate is an instant oh i'm tired of testing so i let it go my soul and all that's left
00:57:12but i hope i pass your test
00:57:16I'll be gone without a sound
00:57:19When my heart fails me and I'm not around
00:57:22Floating on the paths I used to cross
00:57:27Something stops me, guess I've found
00:57:30The stories end, it's all clear now
00:57:33The only feeling bigger than love is lost
00:57:36So high, so low
00:57:40If it's all that I've waged, I'll wave the flag
00:57:44The fate is in his hands
00:57:47You know I'm tired as ever
00:57:49Oh, I'm tired as ever
00:57:55Oh, I surrender
00:58:00Oh, I surrender
00:58:10That's an artist, that is an artist
00:58:12Bravo
00:58:14Bravo
00:58:15Bravo
00:58:16Bravo
00:58:16You're so solid
00:58:18I mean, I've heard you do that song before
00:58:20And the fact that you've written that song
00:58:23Just even some of the changes in the chord progression
00:58:26Are so mature and far beyond your age
00:58:30Thank you so much
00:58:31You just got the star magic
00:58:32One of my favorite performances of the night
00:58:35Yeah
00:58:35Love you
00:58:36Thank you so much
00:58:37Thank you
00:58:38To get the opportunity to even play that song
00:58:40On a stage like this
00:58:42I'm just glad that I never gave up
00:58:43It's come full circle
00:58:45For him to share it with his sister
00:58:46Just made it all the more special
00:58:49It just makes me so, so thankful
00:58:51To be loved by my parents and my family
00:58:54And I'm just so grateful
00:59:02There's beeping
00:59:03Hold on one second
00:59:04Takes me back to the construction days
00:59:07Back it up
00:59:09My name's Cutter Bradley
00:59:11I'm from Florence, Alabama
00:59:12Florence, Alabama
00:59:13I know where you're from
00:59:14I used to be a welder and a machinist
00:59:16So I went to college for that
00:59:18I've worked many jobs
00:59:20From carpentry, welding, to construction
00:59:23But music, ever since I did music
00:59:25Something was just poking at me
00:59:27Like I gotta see how far I can take it
00:59:29I'll be singing some Jason Aldean, Amarillo Sky
00:59:32And the reason I picked that song
00:59:34Is because it's a song about hard work
00:59:36Dedicating it to my parents right here
00:59:37Cause they showed me what hard work is
00:59:39And it's rubbed off on me
00:59:41Cause I'm hard working for my dreams right now
00:59:43So...
00:59:44Thanks!
00:59:45That's right!
00:59:48This is a lot of tempo I was hoping for
00:59:50I love it!
00:59:52It gets up before the dawn
00:59:54Packs and lunch and thermos
00:59:57Full of coffee
01:00:00It's another day in the dusty haze
01:00:03The burning rays are wearing down
01:00:06Everybody
01:00:09The piece is worth the price of gold
01:00:12It's the cheapest thing he's ever sold
01:00:16Come on now!
01:00:17He's still holding on
01:00:20Just takes a tractor another round
01:00:24Pulls a plow across the ground
01:00:27He sends up another prayer
01:00:31He says, Lord, I never complain
01:00:34I never ask why
01:00:36Please don't let my dreams run dry
01:00:41Underneath, underneath this Amarillo sky
01:00:46He's still holding on
01:00:51Has a plow across the world
01:00:52Doesn't take a glory
01:00:52Another round
01:00:54Another round
01:00:55He says, I'll never complain
01:01:04I never ask why
01:01:06Please don't let my dreams run dry
01:01:11Go to me, go to me, the San Marino sky
01:01:19Thank y'all.
01:01:25Great song choice for you.
01:01:27And I tell you, rocking overalls in Hawaii.
01:01:30I tell you what, that's pretty amazing.
01:01:33You really impressed me with where you went vocally.
01:01:36I enjoyed it.
01:01:37Great job.
01:01:38Thank you so much.
01:01:39Thank y'all.
01:01:39Thank you, man.
01:01:41Taking the card, playing it, slinging it around,
01:01:43and then going out to the audience, I was like,
01:01:46hey, I see you, I see you.
01:01:48Somebody crushing down there?
01:01:50Yes.
01:01:51Carrie, Carrie's crushing too.
01:01:53I said, no.
01:01:54I see where you're coming from, and you are correct, ma'am.
01:02:00With the added pressure of not only the judges,
01:02:02but also the industry experts deciding their fate,
01:02:06the weight of the moment is getting to some.
01:02:08The industry experts are going to be voting for us, which is scary.
01:02:13She was missing was a little bit of confidence.
01:02:15You can tell she's one of the younger performers.
01:02:17She doesn't have the experience.
01:02:19There will absolutely be more pressure.
01:02:20I thought she was a superstar.
01:02:22I agree.
01:02:25I agree.
01:02:27It's super scary to know that they're going to be watching and judging.
01:02:30It looked like she was a little bored.
01:02:33Oh, what are you talking about?
01:02:35Oh, my goodness.
01:02:36That was storytelling.
01:02:38I wish you would have looked over here,
01:02:40but I thought she brought the power to the song.
01:02:43That was beautiful.
01:02:44Okay.
01:02:44The way she said it sounds better than you said.
01:02:49Definitely got to bring my A-game.
01:02:51I got to, you know, I got to do something.
01:02:54You got it, Mike.
01:02:57Oh.
01:02:58You got a chance, take it, take it while you got a chance.
01:03:06You got a dream, chase it, cause a dream won't chase you back.
01:03:13You're going to love somebody, hold on as long and strong,
01:03:18as close as you can, until you can.
01:03:23You're just a baby.
01:03:25It just felt like it was, something was a little off.
01:03:28Maybe it wasn't his best performance.
01:03:30I was seeing, like, a country Bieber with the, you know, the little hair flip.
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:38That's what you fought on.
01:03:39That's exactly right!
01:03:41Shirley, the co-editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone, is going to be here.
01:03:45I am, like, freaking out.
01:03:50Hi, everyone.
01:03:51My name is Kindle, and today I'm actually singing a song that I wrote.
01:03:55It's called Woman of Me.
01:03:57I wrote it for my mom.
01:03:58I can't look at her too long or I will immediately cry.
01:04:01My mom is my favorite person in the whole entire world.
01:04:04She has been a backbone and just a rock in my life.
01:04:11But growing up, we had a tendency to clash.
01:04:15I was a pretty rebellious kid.
01:04:16Like, I started hanging around with the wrong people, dropped out of school,
01:04:19moved all the way to the other side of the country in L.A.
01:04:23I needed to go and explore the world and learn and fall flat on my face.
01:04:28And I'm sure that, like, I'm sure that really broke her heart, you know?
01:04:37Whoa.
01:04:39I think that sometimes before you can watch someone fly, you have to let them hit rock bottom.
01:04:45And it was the hardest thing that I've ever done.
01:04:48She was 18 years old, and she needed to go.
01:04:52She needed to figure it out.
01:04:55Having a mother that loved me enough to let me go, but be standing there with open arms when I
01:05:03ran back
01:05:06is a gratitude I can't fully even express.
01:05:09And so I tried with this song.
01:05:11And I just, I really want to honor her with this.
01:05:14I really want her to understand just how special she is to me.
01:05:25I'm the daughter of a God-fearing woman
01:05:31Countless nights she probably laid there awake
01:05:34To her surprise I did everything I shouldn't
01:05:40On a word of both hearts would break
01:05:46From time to time there's a look in her eyes
01:05:52She didn't think she did it right
01:05:54Oh, God
01:05:55She was alive when there was no light I could see
01:06:01Gave me a reason to fight
01:06:06She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me
01:06:12Taught me all my wrongs and rights
01:06:16I could have fed all of my thanks in a bottle
01:06:22It'd break before it drifted into a sea
01:06:26She was a girl before she was a woman
01:06:32Now she's made a woman of me
01:06:36Oh, she's made a woman of me
01:06:39She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me
01:06:44Taught me all my wrongs and rights
01:06:48I could have fed all of my thanks in a bottle
01:06:54It'd break before it drifted into a sea
01:06:58She was a girl before she was a woman
01:07:04Now she's made a woman
01:07:07She's made a woman
01:07:10She's made a woman
01:07:13Of me
01:07:21That songwriting is incredible
01:07:25Kendall, I just want to hear more of your songs
01:07:29You're such a great storyteller
01:07:31And you have the voice to back it all up
01:07:35So if this was truly a moment meant for you right now
01:07:40Thank you so much
01:07:47Perfect, no complaints
01:07:48That's my American Idol
01:07:50I can't even
01:07:50I'm so proud of her
01:07:53I couldn't even look at my mom
01:07:54Like I knew I would cry
01:07:55But she was right there on my heart
01:07:58And I just like felt her
01:07:59And that was such a special moment
01:08:01I wish I could do it again and again and again
01:08:16I'll be singing All I Want by Codaline
01:08:18Dedicating it to my great-grandmother
01:08:21Her name was Mama Rice to me
01:08:22But to everybody else she was Nancy
01:08:24The song that he picked
01:08:25It means a lot to the family
01:08:28She was a huge supporter of me
01:08:30And this is one of the songs
01:08:32This is one of the songs
01:08:33She loved for me to sing to her
01:08:35I sung it in hospice
01:08:37Unfortunately before she passed away
01:08:39So hopefully y'all like it
01:08:42All right, all right
01:08:44Wow, yeah
01:08:50All I want is nothing more
01:08:56To hear you
01:08:58To hear you locking at my door
01:09:03Cause if I could see your face once more
01:09:09I could die a happy man, I'm sure
01:09:14And if you love me
01:09:19And if you love me
01:09:21Would you leave me
01:09:23Take my body
01:09:27Take my body
01:09:31Take my body
01:09:32And all I want is
01:09:35And all I need is
01:09:38To find somebody
01:09:42To find somebody
01:09:44I'll find somebody
01:09:48I'll find somebody
01:09:49Like you
01:09:54I'll find somebody
01:09:56And if you love me
01:09:58And if you love me
01:09:59And if you love me
01:10:00Why'd you leave me
01:10:02Take my body
01:10:05Take my body
01:10:09Take my body
01:10:09And all I want is
01:10:14And all I need is
01:10:18Find somebody
01:10:21Find somebody
01:10:23I'll find somebody
01:10:27I'll find somebody
01:10:28Like you
01:10:36I love you boys
01:10:39I love you boys
01:10:42I love you boys
01:10:48And he's so sweet
01:10:50Yeah he is
01:10:51He's got that grit
01:10:52Teddy Swims
01:10:53Chris Stapleton
01:10:54You just took us on a journey
01:10:56You brought us in when it was meant to feel intense
01:11:00And then on the soaring notes
01:11:03You kind of took us to this whole other place
01:11:05Where we could just kind of feel that swell
01:11:08That's a gift
01:11:09Great job
01:11:10Thank you
01:11:10Thank you so much
01:11:12I realized this voice could go that high for that long
01:11:15Oh my gosh
01:11:17To be able to take a song that is usually taken in a completely different direction
01:11:21And bring it here was magic
01:11:24So proud of it
01:11:27I can't talk right
01:11:28I can't even breathe
01:11:30That was amazing
01:11:32To make it to the top 30
01:11:34It feels like incredible
01:11:38You are meant to be here
01:11:40Thank you
01:11:40I'm just enjoying it
01:11:41And soaking the knee in every which way
01:11:43You looking for me?
01:11:44For the old hunt around
01:11:45I picked Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo
01:11:47I will dedicate this song today to my lovely mother
01:11:51That's in the audience over here to the side
01:11:54My mom
01:11:55She has always stood up for me
01:11:57She has always paved the way for me
01:11:59Been there every step of the way
01:12:01I had Makaya when I was at college
01:12:05Single mom
01:12:06And so there were times where I didn't know how I was going to do some things
01:12:12We would come home from school
01:12:13And then we would go to my grandparents' house and eat dinner
01:12:16I didn't know then as a child that was solely because we didn't have food
01:12:22Everybody hits rough spots but I hit a rough one
01:12:24It was a really dark time
01:12:27For her to allow me to solely be a child and have no worries
01:12:33She never let us see her suffer
01:12:39When my mom hears me perform this song
01:12:42I hope she feels that I will always be here for her
01:12:46Through every step of the way the same way she was there for me
01:12:49And that one day this all will pay off
01:12:52I've been walking
01:12:56With my face turned to the sun
01:13:01Woo hoo
01:13:03It can be
01:13:03Oh I got eyes in the back of my head
01:13:09Just in case I have to run
01:13:13It's about to get dirty, it's about to get dirty
01:13:16Watch the clouds roll back and the stars fill the night
01:13:22That's when I wanna stand up
01:13:26Take my people with me
01:13:29Together we are going
01:13:32To a brand new home
01:13:40And I know
01:13:41And I know
01:13:43What's around the bend
01:13:46Might be hard
01:13:48To face cause I'm alone
01:13:52And I just might know
01:13:55But Lord knows I tried
01:13:59She has made me
01:14:03I got on the bend
01:14:09Come on
01:14:10It's on the bend
01:14:12Come on
01:14:12Together we are going
01:14:14To a brand new home
01:14:17Far across the river
01:14:20And you hear freedom calling
01:14:24Calling me to Western
01:14:27We're gonna keep on keeping on
01:14:30I can feel it in my heart
01:14:36I can feel it in my heart
01:14:50See this downtown!
01:14:53You better see it, baby!
01:14:55Thank you!
01:15:00Micaiah came here to kill.
01:15:03It was so emotional. It showed everybody what you can do.
01:15:07It had southern moments, it had southern gospel moments,

01:15:54welcome back to american idol's brand new ohana round all 30 of our idol hopefuls have performed
01:16:00and now it's time to whittle them down to the top 20 who get the chance to sing for america's
01:16:06vote
01:16:06i am nervous because everyone was impressive i know you see a lot of voices out there i don't
01:16:12know i don't know but first there are three platinum tickets up for grabs and each one
01:16:18secures one of those spots but for the first time ever it's not the judges making the final call
01:16:24the first will be chosen by the industry tastemakers stop y'all the second by the ohana the family
01:16:32members a lot of powerhouses and the third platinum ticket by their peers our idol hopefuls this is
01:16:39crazy now the ohana cannot vote for their own family members and the idols cannot vote for themselves
01:16:48it's really about whose performance moved them the most it is a gut-wrenching decision to have to make
01:16:56whatever hit me in the heart that's who i want it's difficult i mean i think just people that really
01:17:02stepped it up to you know superstar level as someone who's watched the show for so many seasons who's
01:17:08written about it who's covered it being on this side is it's really stressful seeing a baby this is
