00:00For me and for millions of others, the story of Peter is one of the most moving in the Gospels
00:26because Peter was rash and he's sometimes very slow to understand, fearful, imperfect.
00:35In other words, a human being, just like the rest of us.
00:38And Jesus chose him to carry on his ministry, not in spite of, but because of his humanity.
00:48We've done our best to tell the story of this man who was a fisherman, a humble fisherman,
00:53who was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
00:57St. Peter.
01:15His name was Simon, or Shimon, which means he who heard the word of God.
01:22His brother's name was Andrew.
01:27He was a simple fisherman, a working man.
01:32The work was hard, and the times were harder.
01:36But there was one voice that stood out.
01:45Galileans, people of Galilee, listen to me.
01:50We are all so quick to see the fault in others.
01:57We open our eyes.
01:59We see.
02:00We understand quickly.
02:02Because we are looking from afar, not within.
02:09No, not within.
02:13That is never comfortable.
02:16But listen, the next time you find fault with your wife, or your brother, or your neighbor, or even your enemy.
02:30Look within, and you will find the purest expression of the fault you see in the other.
02:45Yes.
02:47Yes.
02:48Yes, you will.
02:53This is true.
02:54Will you get out of our boat now?
03:24Put down into the deep water and lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
03:37Just get out of our boat.
03:38We've been out all night and caught nothing.
03:40It's too late now.
03:41Lower your nets from the right side of the boat.
03:44I tell you, there are fish there.
03:54I tell you, there are fish in the right side of the boat.
04:08I tell you, there are fish in the right side of the boat.
04:14It's not possible.
04:29Follow me and I'll make you fishers of men.
04:41I tell you, there are fish in the right side of the boat.
04:55I tell you, there are fish in the right side of the boat.
04:59I tell you, there are fish in the right side of the boat.
05:13I tell you, there are fish in the right side of the boat.
05:17You are the fish in the right side of the boat.
05:31I tell you, there is fish in the right side of the boat.
05:37How can I help you?
06:07That's the way, that's the way.
06:37What is this life we're leading now?
06:44I don't know.
06:47I don't understand half the things he says.
06:52Neither do I.
06:54How can anyone forgive the whole world?
06:58How can anyone forgive someone who's wronged you?
07:04I don't know, but he can.
07:11That woman who sped on him, the one who sped on me,
07:16he forgave her over and over.
07:18But that's him.
07:20He's not like other men.
07:25Do you think he comes from God?
07:31What do you think?
07:35Do you think he's the Messiah?
07:42I think I was compelled to follow him.
07:48It changed my life to follow him.
07:54So did I.
08:00When someone is hungry, he feeds them.
08:05When someone is alone, he comforts them.
08:09And when someone is sick, he heals them.
08:14But when I speak to him, he answers.
08:23Yes.
08:24That's something new in this life.
08:30Yes.
08:32It is.
08:35You were taught well by your father.
08:50My father never leaves me.
08:52I knew your father.
08:53May he rest in peace.
08:55My father is in all things and all people.
08:59He is eternal.
09:01Be very, very careful what you say, Nazarene.
09:08They honor me with their mouths, but their hearts are worlds away.
09:14And they worship me in vain by teaching their own human inventions as my doctrines.
09:21Isaiah.
09:22Isaiah.
09:23Yes.
09:24And his prophecy has come to pass with your generation of hypocrites.
09:30Isaiah.
09:31You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces.
09:35The very people who are trying to enter.
09:37You trudge to the back of Beyond looking for a single man to convert.
09:42And the moment you succeed, you start making him twice as much a child of hell as you are.
09:51Isaiah.
09:52It's not wise to keep company of this man.
09:55He is not your messiah.
09:58Isaiah.
09:59Master, you think that this was wise?
10:08They took offense at your words.
10:10And when they should, they are blind.
10:14If the blind lead the blind, they all fall into a pit.
10:19But what does that mean?
10:21What does all of it mean, Master?
10:23We don't understand.
10:24I think you do understand, but you deny that you do.
10:27Because you are afraid.
10:36There was Andrew.
10:39Thomas.
10:43Bartholomew.
10:45Mary of Magdala.
10:51And Mary, the mother of Jesus.
10:55Judas Iscariot.
10:57And Simon Peter.
10:59They, along with the others, were the ones who remained.
11:04The disciples who became the apostles.
11:09The ones who would spread the word as far and as wide as they could.
11:15Master, what do we do now?
11:32Because now the Pharisees will suspect us and watch us.
11:36They'll watch everything we do.
11:39Won't that harm our mission?
11:42Your mission?
11:43Is it our mission?
11:44I don't know.
11:47My dear one.
11:49I chose you.
11:52All of you.
11:54Each and every one of you.
11:56And that includes the one who will betray me.
11:59And the one who will deny me.
12:02Near the hour of my death.
12:10Your death?
12:11Yes.
12:12Yes.
12:13My death.
12:15But after three days, I will rise again.
12:18How can you say these things?
12:19How do you even dare to speak of your own death?
12:20Betray you?
12:21Deny you?
12:22Out of my sight, Satan!
12:23You're speaking in the tongues of men!
12:24I'm speaking the words of God!
12:25This is too much.
12:26I've had enough.
12:27I've had enough!
12:28I've had enough!
12:29I've had enough!
12:30I've had enough!
12:31I've had enough!
12:33I've had enough!
12:34I've had enough!
12:36I've had enough!
12:37of men. I'm speaking the words of God. This is too much. I've had enough. I've had enough!
13:07Simon, there are things that you will only understand after I've risen from the dead.
13:23Master, I was born a fisherman. It's hard work, but it's a decent living. I could go back
13:36to that life. But you've revealed so much to me. Some of it I've understood. A lot of
13:46it I... I know no scripture. I work with my hands. I'm a much simpler man than you think
13:57I am. Simon, I'm giving you a new name. Peter. Why? What for? Because you will be my rock.
14:13The rock on which the church will be built. The faith. I'll give you the keys to heaven's
14:26kingdom. Me? Why me? I don't understand. I... I don't understand.
14:49Go, go, go, go.
15:02ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
15:32Master, what are you doing?
15:47I'm going to wash your feet.
15:49No! You will never wash my feet.
15:51I told you.
15:52There are things you can't understand now.
15:55But you will understand them later.
16:02You call me Master, don't you?
16:13Yes.
16:14So the Master is washing the pupils' feet.
16:18This is what we will do for each other.
16:22As I am doing for you,
16:25you will do for one another.
16:26For all others.
16:32If you understand this now, any of you,
16:36then you are blessed.
16:39But I don't expect that you will.
16:41Tonight, one of you will betray me.
16:52And after they've taken me,
16:55one of you will deny me.
17:01Me?
17:02No.
17:07Never.
17:09Three times
17:10before the cock crows.
17:16This is the way of man,
17:18my beloved Peter.
17:19No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
17:49No!
17:50No!
17:51No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
17:52Don't do it.
17:53No.
17:53No.
18:19No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
18:49Let's go.
19:19Let's go.
19:49I don't know what you're talking about.
20:00Wasn't that man with Jesus or Nazareth?
20:02That's what I thought.
20:03I never met the man.
20:04You're one of his followers.
20:06I know you are.
20:07You have a Galilean accent just like him.
20:09Listen to me.
20:10I've never watched the dice on this man.
20:14Leave me alone.
20:15I don't know.
20:45I don't know.
20:46I don't know.
20:55I don't know.
20:57No!
21:27Hey, brothers!
21:52Who is that?
21:55I don't know.
21:56I've never seen him.
22:00Did you catch anything?
22:03No, nothing!
22:07Lower your nets off the right side of the boat.
22:14It's too late!
22:17Lower your nets from the right side of the boat!
22:21I tell you, there are fish!
22:24Just to humor him.
22:40Move!
22:41Move!
22:42We can have to make nets all day now!
22:52Gonna be here!
23:05Oh, no, no!
23:08You can find the klairs.
23:09Oh, no.
23:11Master, it's you.
23:23Peter, do you love me?
23:30Master, I betrayed you.
23:35As I said you would.
23:38I'm so ashamed.
23:39But I told you that you would.
23:43Your shame is no concern of mine.
23:48Master, I...
23:50Do you love me?
23:57Master, you have to know that I love you.
24:00Feed my sheep.
24:03But, Master, I...
24:04Feed my lands.
24:06Shepherd my sheep.
24:07Feed my sheep.
24:10Yes.
24:11Yes, I will, Master.
24:12And remember this.
24:14When you are old, you won't be able to do as you did when you were young.
24:20Yes, yes, I know that.
24:22Listen to me.
24:23You'll have to stretch out your arms for someone else to dress you and take you where you don't want to go.
24:32I knew it was the Lord.
24:44I've made breakfast for all of you, and your nets will hold.
24:55And you're coma say?
24:55No, no.
24:56No!
24:56When do you leave a peep and take me where you stand?
24:57Jeh?
24:57Un mĂłvil.
24:58Ah!
25:10Maaf!
25:11I pray for you.
25:12Uh-uh!
25:12For us, we'll be sure to see you remember.
25:13I will do something.
25:14I'll do something.
25:14But I'll do something.
25:16No »
25:17Maaf!
25:17Let's go!
25:18He looks good-
25:19Maaf!
25:20Noah!
25:20Maybe-
25:21He looks like Mrs.
25:22Maaf!
25:23Ha-ha!
25:24Brother, I'm just a poor fisherman.
25:37He was, he is the son of God.
25:41You are the rock.
25:46And he taught all of us to follow him by his example.
25:49But you understood him far better than I did.
25:54Perhaps, perhaps not.
26:00Understanding comes for every person in their own time.
26:02Yes, but you did not deny him.
26:07You stood by him when he was put to death.
26:12I denied him.
26:14And what did you see in yourself when you did what he knew you would do?
26:22My shame.
26:24And, and what, brother?
26:34My soul.
26:36He lit a flame within you, brother Peter.
26:41Now you have to light a flame in others.
26:43All of you?
26:56I want you to listen to me carefully now.
27:18As I speak of a man, a prophet, Jesus of Nazareth.
27:26He was given to you by God and made known to you with the signs and wonders that God worked through him.
27:33And this man, Jesus, who they allowed to be crucified, he allowed it.
27:40And then God, his father, raised him up and released him from death.
27:46I see the Lord before me, said David.
27:50He's always at my right hand.
27:53David lived and he died.
27:56He's buried in his tomb.
27:57But David knew, but David knew that God would send the Messiah and God would lift him away from death.
28:03God has made this man both Lord and Messiah.
28:05This Jesus, whom they crucified, I knew this man.
28:13I love this man.
28:16He was, he was, he was, he is the Messiah of love and constant forgiveness.
28:26Forgiveness to all before you, friends and enemies.
28:32Because how else are we to break free from vengeance?
28:36So I say to you, repent.
28:42Repent and be baptized.
28:46I baptize you in the name of Jesus.
29:16Peter and the other apostles were called before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish legislative body made up of Pharisees and Sadducees.
29:39They would question about preaching and healing a lame beggar in the name of Jesus.
29:45You're questioning us about a good deed done to a crippled man.
29:51You demand to know how he was saved by what power.
29:56So here's your answer.
29:58It was in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and who God raised from the dead.
30:07There is no other way to salvation.
30:10And there is no other name under heaven given to anyone in the human race by which we can all be saved.
30:16Whatever judgment you hand down, whatever instructions or prohibitions we may receive, these matters are of no consequence to us.
30:23We will never stop speaking of Jesus of Nazareth, what he said, what he did.
30:32We will never stop preaching in his name and we will never stop shouting his name from the roofs of every house and from the tops of every mountain.
30:39I am the one.
30:40I am the one who was cured by this man.
30:47Many of you in this room know me.
30:50You know what I was.
30:54And you can see now what I am.
30:59Great is the power of the Lord.
31:06They were forbidden from preaching in the name of Jesus.
31:10They were taken to be flogged.
31:18But there was no denying that the Christians, as they would later be known, were a new and lasting spirit in the world.
31:36Peter took to the road to evangelize.
31:39Peter traveled through Syracuse and Sicily, to Calabria on the mainland, and up through the Bay of Naples, and from there to the Appian Way, which led to Rome.
32:20Babylon
32:46Shortly after Peter's arrival, a massive fire broke out in Rome.
32:57It devastated the city and destroyed four of its 14 neighborhoods.
33:03It was rumored that the emperor Nero himself had ordered the fire to clear out areas for construction of a new palace complex.
33:16Aren't you thankful for receiving food from these men of God?
33:42Words of Satan!
33:44But how are we teaching kindness in others?
33:47We're comforting those who need our comfort.
33:49We're feeding those who need our bread and bringing water to those who are thirsty.
33:54Whether they thank us or not is a matter for men.
33:57It has nothing to do with God.
34:00Yes, master.
34:01No.
34:03There's only one who deserves to be called master.
34:05According to the historian Tacitus, who was in Rome during the fire, Nero used the Christians as scapegoats.
34:31He rounded up their leaders and sentenced them to die on the cross.
35:17Peter followed the way of his master
35:21from beginning to end
35:23spreading his faith
35:26and speaking his word
35:27but he asked that his cross be fashioned differently
35:32because he felt that he wasn't worthy
35:36to die as Jesus had died
35:47to die
36:17Blessed are the pure in heart
36:29Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount
36:32for they will see God
36:33and he might have been speaking of this man
36:37to whom he entrusted everything
36:38Jesus told Peter
36:41you'll deny me
36:42not because he wanted Peter to resist
36:45or to test him
36:46instead he gave Peter a way of seeing himself fully and clearly
36:51and from there
36:52a pathway within
36:54to real change
36:56and that was the gift
36:59that Jesus gave to Peter
37:01and to the world
37:02Peter was fascinating to me
37:15because he was always a guy
37:16who was struggling to understand
37:18and the fact that he was always described
37:20as being a hot-headed guy
37:21so my interest is
37:24Jesus choosing Peter
37:26because of the flaws
37:28Jesus is obviously a good judge of character
37:33I think he chooses Peter for his strengths and his weaknesses
37:36first of all he's a fisherman
37:37so he knows how to bait a hook
37:39he knows how to catch things
37:41he knows how to be patient
37:42so all these qualities that make a good fisherman
37:44but he also knows his weaknesses as we know
37:46and I think to be a leader of the community
37:49you have to know your weaknesses
37:50because you have to remember your reliance on God
37:52and I think that made him the perfect disciple in a sense
37:56Richard Rohr the spiritual writer said that
37:58Peter comes to Jesus not by doing right
38:02but by doing wrong
38:03which I think is really beautiful
38:04my old New Testament professor Dan Harrington
38:07used to say that the name Peter
38:09Rock might have been a little bit of a nickname
38:12and a little bit of a play on his character
38:14so it's not beyond Jesus to use that kind of two ways
38:17you're the rock in which I'll build my church
38:19but you're also kind of a tough guy
38:21you're kind of hard-headed Rocky
38:22God's ways are not our ways
38:24the person who doesn't have the appearance
38:26of a true believer
38:27has it at his core
38:29and that's Peter right
38:31if there's a point to it
38:32it's to remind us to try to judge character
38:35not by our usual criteria
38:36who's the best behaved
38:38the most reliable
38:39what's the greatest commandment
38:41you know to love
38:42and the idea that you're changed by feeling
38:46that through suffering
38:48and through emotional experience
38:51you transform
38:53the thing I love about him
38:55is how he's always saying
38:57I don't get it
38:58you think about somebody who's super emotional
39:01it's a volatile way to live
39:02because you're yanked around by how you feel
39:05he must have been terrified
39:07I mean it's one thing to be like with Jesus there
39:10and another thing to see him being led away
39:12yes exactly
39:13and knowing he's going to Golgotha
39:15you just have the feeling that after that face to face
39:19and that level of repentance and forgiveness
39:22in the living moment
39:23he became willing to go to his death
39:25he wouldn't have denied him
39:27yeah that's the real mystery
39:29and strength of Christianity
39:30it's what happened between that moment
39:33and going on the road
39:35yeah it has to have been the resurrection
39:37a lot of people say
39:38well it was the disciples kind of remembering him
39:41you don't go and put your head on the block
39:42for remembering
39:43Peter who was ready to go back to his old job
39:46I'm going to quit I'm out
39:48so he needed something dramatic
39:50and I think all the disciples did
39:51to show this is real
39:53the resurrection is real
39:54and it needs to have been physical, visual
39:57something that's unmistakable
39:58and then he's changed
40:00my favorite sequence
40:01where he dives into the blue water
40:04and then he's face to face with him
40:06he's in that state of profound repentance
40:09Jesus offers him forgiveness three times
40:11to ask him three times
40:12do you love me
40:13to counterbalance Peter's denial three times
40:16but he also doesn't say
40:18do you apologize
40:19it's all love
40:21the way you characterize it
40:22he denied Jesus in the strongest possible terms
40:24as they say in the newspapers
40:25he could have kept denying
40:27I didn't really mean it
40:28I was under a lot of pressure
40:29I didn't want to die too
40:31but he doesn't go there
40:32he owns it
40:33and that straightforwardness
40:35makes it possible for him to receive that love
40:37and the risen Christ offers him not revenge
40:39he offers him love
40:41and peace
40:42and forgiveness
40:42and reconciliation
40:43I think this episode gets us
40:46back to the beginnings of Christianity
40:48where we can see how strange it was
40:50how reckless it was to commit to this
40:52and that's what I took away from the final image
40:55the resurrection or Jesus himself
40:57turned Peter's life upside down
40:59we can see that and feel that
41:01and it was so luminous
