'Black Panther.' 'Infinity War.' 'Venom.' The Heat Vision Breakdown team assembles for a deep dive into the best and worst of 2018's action, horror and sci-fi films.
Transcript
00:00Hello friends, it's been a great year for blockbusters and genres from horror, sci-fi, action, superhero genres, and everything in between.
00:08To celebrate the year-endstravaganza, I have gathered the entire Heat Vision Breakdown team, or as you may know us,
00:15the third place winning at the 11th annual National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Award in the Soft News Under 5 Minute category.
00:22Woohoo!
00:22Yeah!
00:23Yeah!
00:30To celebrate the end of the year, let's take a look back at some of the great moments from 2018,
00:35and let's start with the movie that most pleasantly surprised you.
00:38Why don't you go first?
00:39I can go first.
00:40I'm going to say Infinity War, which is a little bit surprising, maybe, because I thought it was going to be great,
00:46and I kind of felt that it was going to be great, but it was amazing to me how they juggled so many characters in a movie that bloated,
00:53and it never felt like a character didn't get enough screen time or wasn't done service.
00:58There's like 78 superheroes in that movie, and everybody got a little bit of time and a fulfilling story in that movie.
01:04My pleasantly surprised movie was in the same vein as you were saying about Infinity War, Widows,
01:11because it was very dense, there was a lot going on in that script, and I didn't really have any expectations going in,
01:17and then I was pleasantly surprised.
01:19Mine is Venom because, I mean, look at the trailers. It looked kind of bad. The CGI looked kind of bad.
01:24You go in. There's no Spider-Man in this movie. That's the whole point of the character.
01:28So, I went to the premiere thinking, okay, we'll see what happens, and then it was awesome.
01:33It knows it's a pretty bad movie, except for Tom Hardy. He doesn't know, and he commits so fully to it, and he's awesome in it.
01:40It's like Nicolas Cage in the 90s, a guy that is an Oscar-caliber actor in Con Air, you know, in The Rock,
01:46in these amazing bad movies that are so good.
01:49One movie I was really excited about coming out was Ocean's 8, and then it kind of got a little bit of mixed reviews,
01:54so I, like, didn't see it for a while, and then it was on my airplane, and I watched it on the plane,
01:59and it was very much a plane movie, but it was even better than that, and I enjoyed it.
02:02I enjoyed Sandy B and Anne Hathaway, and it was great.
02:04We actually did an episode of that, and that was, like, one of my favorite episodes.
02:07I like that your biggest pleasant surprise was you on an airplane watching a movie for free.
02:11Well, it was an airplane movie, but it was a very good airplane movie.
02:13It was a good airplane movie.
02:14It was great.
02:15What was the most underrated movie, scene, or performance from this year?
02:20I thought The Ritual was really underrated, the Netflix movie.
02:23I didn't really hear anybody talking about it.
02:25I don't really like horror personally, but when we watched it, I thought it was really well done.
02:29The third act really paid off with that monster.
02:32It really does pay off the monster.
02:34The monster's horrifying.
02:35It's like a giant deer demon meme.
02:37If that doesn't get you to log in to Netflix right now and watch that movie.
02:40Yeah, it was good.
02:41Speaking of monsters, I think the best monster this year was the Megalodon, and the Meg,
02:45which I don't think a lot of people saw, but Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson and that
02:49were just incredible.
02:50It was a really jumpy movie where you didn't know where the Meg was at all times.
02:53I thought it was really underrated.
02:54I haven't seen the Meg, but a gigantic shark from the Cretaceous period, it sneaks up on people?
03:00Yeah.
03:01Okay.
03:02A lot.
03:03That's hard to do.
03:04Did you have one, Aaron?
03:05I think I'm okay.
03:06Let's go the complete opposite direction with it, and I'm going to ask you what movie let you
03:11down the most this year.
03:12I'm going to say that A Quiet Place, though I liked it, actually let me down more than
03:17maybe any other movie this year, which isn't really the movie's fault.
03:20It's everybody else's fault who told me it was a great movie, but there are so many inconsistencies
03:26in this movie.
03:27The worst of which being that they could have just lived next to that waterfall or dug a
03:31big hole with spikes in it and just put a radio down there to kill these monsters.
03:34It doesn't do enough world building for me to make it a great movie, especially the way
03:39that people talked about it.
03:41I think you were just too, you had too high of expectations.
03:43I think so.
03:44I'm poking holes in it.
03:45Sorry, Krasinski.
03:46Yes.
03:47I went into it not really thinking I was going to like it, and of course I was one of those
03:51people that really loved it.
03:53But I think I was most let down by Ready Player One.
03:56I was way too excited.
03:57I'm a huge fan of the book, I've read the book several times, and then, I don't know,
04:03I just went in trying to manage expectations, and even with that I came out of the theater
04:07feeling really let down just by the story, the character, I don't know.
04:11There wasn't enough nostalgia in it.
04:13I wish it would have relied a little bit more on it.
04:15Wait, you're kidding.
04:16No.
04:17Okay, no.
04:18I'm not the first person to say this, but Solo, A Star Wars Story, is the first Star Wars
04:22movie that is not essential viewing.
04:23You know, you might not like The Last Jedi.
04:26You might not like Episode 1, but things happen in there where if you care about the story,
04:30you need to see this.
04:31There's nothing in Solo that you need to know that if it answers any questions, they're not
04:36questions that it matters at all if you watch it.
04:38How did he get his name?
04:39Yeah.
04:40It was an immigration officer, so.
04:41Oh!
04:42And that was the first five minutes of the movie.
04:44Yeah, you know, it's unfortunate, but I think there was a lot of behind the scenes troubles
04:48on that one.
04:49And Disney's learning its lesson.
04:50I think they're not going to have Star Wars movies coming out every year now, and so that's
04:54a good thing.
04:55That's a tough one.
04:56I really want you to think about this.
04:57Imagine a world where you can only see one movie, so this might be on a plane.
05:02One movie that comes out in 2019, what's your pick?
05:06It's between Captain Marvel and Endgame.
05:08I really, maybe it's weird, but I really want to see Captain Marvel.
05:12What's weird about that?
05:13I don't know, because the way Infinity War ended and then to not see the ending of the
05:20story.
05:21Oh, okay.
05:22I see what you're saying.
05:23But we all know what's going to happen.
05:24I mean, they're coming back to life.
05:25Are they though?
05:26I know you'll be mad at me, Pat, but it really is hard for me to pick Star Wars 9 or Endgame.
05:34You bastard.
05:35I'm saying Endgame though.
05:36Don't worry.
05:37Endgame.
05:38Yeah.
05:39I have to know how it comes back.
05:40You have to see it.
05:41And I need to see Chris Evans retire or Downey retire possibly, all that stuff.
05:45It brings up a really great point because I have no investment at all in Star Wars at
05:49this point.
05:50I don't really care about Finn.
05:51I don't really care about Rey.
05:52I don't really care about Kylo Ren.
05:54I don't care.
05:55But I care so much about what happens in the Avengers.
05:57So it's like a tale of two blockbusters.
06:00And one I really care about and one I don't really care about that much.
06:03So Endgame for you as well.
06:04It has to be Endgame.
06:05Endgame is your Endgame.
06:07Endgame is my Endgame.
06:08Pretty much.
06:09So I hope they're playing it on the plane that I'm on.
06:12I'd say between Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
06:16No.
06:17Just one.
06:18Oh, okay.
06:19More so Aladdin.
06:20Just because the teaser trailer that came out, the ending of it where you see Aladdin
06:22and you see the lamp, you just really want to see the movie.
06:25Whereas when I saw the Lion King trailer, and I love lions, I love The Lion King.
06:30Having an animated film about Simba, it didn't feel like Simba to me.
06:34It's interesting that for you it's the experience.
06:37It's not about knowing information like who are Rey's parents or how did the Avengers come
06:41back.
06:42More about the experience.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Exactly.
06:45See, your love of movies is pure.
06:46Mine is completely driven by corporate greed.
06:48It's true.
06:49And now we actually have a new thing we're doing.
06:51It's called the Heady's Awards.
06:52Woohoo!
06:53Hopefully no one gets third place.
06:56Oh.
06:59So the first Heady Award, best stunts category, and the winner is Mission Impossible Fallout,
07:05which we actually didn't really talk about that much.
07:07Tom Cruise learned how to fly a helicopter for this movie.
07:09It's insane.
07:10You love Tom Cruise so much.
07:11I love Tom, yeah.
07:12He's a great movie star.
07:13Okay, I'll read the second one.
07:14Cool.
07:15The breakout character who should most certainly get their own spin-off is Shuri, Letitia Wright
07:20from Black Panther.
07:21Woohoo!
07:22She was awesome.
07:23She was.
07:24She was.
07:25Yeah.
07:26Alright, this is by far my favorite category.
07:27The meanest Heat Vision Breakdown viewer comment comes from Spiritscar on YouTube who
07:32said, was it possible to find a more obnoxious, annoying douchebag of a human being to present
07:37this story?
07:38Probably not.
07:39Thanks for watching him though.
07:41To balance that out, the nicest viewer comment is the person who called you a cute little
07:45muffin.
07:46There's that.
07:47So most gut-wrenching moment that you weren't expecting and that made you bawl like a baby?
07:51Spider-Man.
07:52Ah!
07:53I'm sorry, what was that?
07:54Spider-Man's death in Infinity War.
07:56Spider-Man!
07:57Yeah.
07:58It's coming back.
07:59Is he?
08:00He's gone.
08:01I don't know.
08:02Okay, this is near and dear to my heart.
08:04Best use of an actor's time at a movie premiere.
08:07That was when Benedict Cumberbatch told me you can tell the Hollywood Reporter absolutely
08:12nothing.
08:13Should we roll that tape?
08:14Yeah, let's see the video.
08:15I can tell the Hollywood Reporter absolutely nothing.
08:17What a wonderful moment.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Oh, that was fun.
08:21Yeah, it was fun.
08:22What a great year guys.
08:23Yeah.
08:24It's been a lot.
08:25I'm proud of us.
08:26What do you guys think were the best moments of 2018 in movies?
08:28Or just in general?
08:29What happened in your life?
08:30Let us know in the comments right down there.
08:32And join us here every Friday morning next year for new episodes of Heat Vision Breakdown.
08:36Thank you so much for watching you guys.
08:37Yeah, thanks guys.
08:38Woo!
08:39We won an award kind of.
