The Heat Vision team looks at 'The Rise of Skywalker' footage, Marvel's newly announced Disney+ shows including 'She-Hulk' and 'Ms. Marvel', 'Mulan' and the 'Game of Thrones' reunion happening with 'Eternals'.
Transcript
00:00Hello friends, D23 has come and gone and shown us a lot of footage from pretty much every movie we care about for the rest of the year because Disney owns everything.
00:07Our intrepid Aaron Couch was actually there in person. He's gonna break down everything that he saw and everything we should be excited about at the end of 2019.
00:17What's cool is that you've seen some of this too, even though you didn't go there. Rise of Skywalker has been released now.
00:22Yeah, it's like I was there.
00:24Yeah, you didn't need to do the work that I did.
00:26But yeah, so what did you think of Rise of Skywalker? The panel opened up Saturday's presentation with a bang.
00:31Yes.
00:32JJ came out. He said, no trailer, but here you go guys.
00:35Yeah, but we saw footage, sort of. We saw a lot of old footage from movies.
00:39And then about 10 seconds of new stuff.
00:41Right. We saw Rey and Kylo Ren fighting again for the 85th time and we're supposed to be excited about that for some reason.
00:47It's exciting.
00:48Is it exciting? She's beat him twice already in the two other films. What is the drama that is in this new Star Wars film?
00:54Well, will she turn bad? We saw that at the very end.
00:56No.
00:57Okay, yeah. It's clearly a dream sequence, right?
00:59Yes.
01:00That played extremely well in the crowd. You know, at D23 it's 7,000 fans. The cast is up there.
01:05It's a whole different experience than watching it on your smartphone. So that, I assure you, did play very well.
01:10Of those 7,000 fans, did anyone actually believe that Rey is going to be a Sith?
01:14Yeah, I mean, I think that you don't have time to really think about it because then they move on to the next thing.
01:19I think that Kevin Feige comes out 10 seconds later. That's how fast and how well produced D23 is.
01:24So, I didn't even stop to think about it until afterwards, wait a second, that's not real.
01:27Hold on.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Disney.
01:30The day before, it was all about Disney Plus and Mandalorian is basically the flagship show.
01:35Okay.
01:36I mean, that's the entire selling point of this platform. Star Wars is not going to be on the big screen for three years after Rise of Skywalker, but there are going to be a lot of shows on Disney Plus.
01:45So, Star Wars isn't going away. Yeah.
01:47Still have a lot of Star Wars going on. Yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:50The Mandalorian is one I am excited about. According to our Hypo-meter, I'm very excited about it.
01:54Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gino Carano, Werner Herzog, the raddest dude in the entire world.
02:00Carl Weathers, that's what I'm really excited about.
02:01Yes, also very excited about that.
02:03That's amazing in this, yeah.
02:04What was the reaction like in the crowd when they showed footage from The Mandalorian?
02:08Well, you know, it was strong. Kathy Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, she pointed out these shows are going to look just as good as they do as the big screen movies.
02:17Well, from the footage, it did look just as good.
02:18It really did. Even on the big screen, it held up. It looked as good as Rogue One, which, you know, was a spectacular looking movie.
02:23Right.
02:24But, you know, The Mandalorian was not the high point. At the very end of the panel, Ewan McGregor comes out to finally confirm he is playing Obi-Wan again.
02:32Now, we've known this for a couple weeks, but to hear the man say it after years and years of going, oh, you know, it'd be nice.
02:38Yeah.
02:39To finally confirm it. And they had a little skit.
02:40Like a summer camp?
02:41Yeah. Basically, he instructed Kathy, you know, ask me if I'm going to play Obi-Wan again. And she asked him, he goes, yes.
02:47And then that was the loudest applause I heard the entire time of D23. I mean, that topped anybody else coming out, any of the Marvel stars, any of the Star Wars, Rise of Skywalker stars, that was it.
02:57Wow.
02:58So that shows you how much people care about this guy.
03:00Shocking, too, based on how Solo kind of underperformed, that people are still very excited about other old characters kind of coming back.
03:06Well, it's Ewan.
03:07Well, it's the actual character, I'm saying.
03:08Yeah, yeah. You're not having some kid.
03:10Right. No offense, but yeah.
03:11According to our hypometer, Aaron, where would you say?
03:13Yeah, I mean, that's at the top of the hypometer. Absolutely.
03:16We also saw a lot from Marvel and from Disney Plus shows coming up. Actually, let's start off with the film side. Let's talk a little bit about Black Widow because this was a film that I feel people weren't as excited about coming off of, you know, Endgame and other really big Marvel properties.
03:31This seems a little bit smaller. It's kind of a throwback. But the footage that you saw, you said, made you a little bit more excited about it.
03:38Not just more. I mean, extremely excited because, yeah, I was thinking, oh, I don't want to see a prequel. I want things to go forward, you know.
03:44But I thought this footage looked like Mission Impossible Fallout plus Winter Soldier.
03:49Wow.
03:50With a lot more vodka drinking, you know.
03:51Like, the scope of this was, I was really shocked by just how Mission Impossible, you know, just different shots of European cities, the action.
04:00You know, the footage we saw starts off with Natasha Romanoff basically fighting to the death in a small apartment with her sister, played by Florence Pugh.
04:09And it was some of the best fight choreography I've seen in the MCU. It was crazy.
04:13That's good. It feels more than, like, the Captain America, like, throwbacks. Like, those spy films, lots of practical fights in it.
04:19Yeah, yeah, absolutely. We didn't really see anything else of any of the other movies. We had Ryan Coogler come out and announce the Black Panther 2 date.
04:25But we have a date.
04:26Yeah.
04:27Which gets the hypometer way up there.
04:30Yeah, 2022, so...
04:31That makes it a little bit far.
04:32Yeah, it's more than four years apart, but that shows, okay, I love it. They're not just rushing it up.
04:36Right.
04:37Googler will not reveal the title, which makes me think, you know, it's not Black Panther 2, but that title will probably reveal something exciting.
04:44Yeah.
04:45Black Panther and Wolverine. No, I'm just kidding, but...
04:47Don't tease me like that.
04:48Yeah.
04:49We also had a whole bunch of Disney Plus shows, some of which we knew about a little bit beforehand, but other ones were big surprises to us.
04:56One of the ones that was a big surprise to me was Moon Knight.
04:58I mean, Moon Knight has a great costume.
05:00He does.
05:01He has a lot of personal struggles.
05:02So, I don't know. I really don't know what to think of this show other than people are excited about it because the people that know him love him.
05:08Yeah, he's kind of a cult favorite.
05:09I don't really know a lot about him, I have to admit.
05:11I'm getting that from you.
05:12Yeah.
05:13Do you know a little bit about She-Hulk, though? Because we also know She-Hulk is coming.
05:15She-Hulk actually seemed to be, just reading the tea leaves, the one that Feige may have been most excited about.
05:20Really? That says something.
05:21He was talking about, so she's Bruce Banner's cousin. She's a lawyer. In the comics, she got a blood transfusion from Bruce Banner and that's why she's She-Hulk?
05:28You know, they should have maybe, Bruce should have said, hey, you know.
05:31Maybe this isn't a great idea. Or maybe she wanted to be a giant green rage monster and it was a good idea.
05:35Yeah. And then we have Ms. Marvel, who is Marvel's first Muslim character or superhero.
05:41She's a teenager. And Feige confirmed, listen, she's not only in the show, she's going to show up in the movies, too.
05:47Which is, again, showing this is not the days of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Netflix.
05:51Like, these things actually are connected, despite years of them saying everything's connected.
05:55Right.
05:56It actually is now.
05:57These matter.
05:58Yeah, these actually matter.
05:59Speaking of the movies, we also revealed that Kit Harington is going to be in The Eternals, alongside former Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden.
06:07Yeah.
06:08So we're getting a lot of Game of Thrones in this new film.
06:09Right, exactly.
06:10And you know, those guys, they haven't been together since the pilot? Isn't that when they, the last they, you know?
06:15Yeah, probably when they split up.
06:16Yeah, so it's not like they really have had a lot of screen time together, so it's cool.
06:20No, it's a reunion for us fans.
06:21Yeah.
06:22Who care about the Starks.
06:23Yeah.
06:24So according to my Hypo meter, I'm very hyped about that.
06:25Yeah.
06:26There's a lot of other footage shown because Disney owns every property on the planet.
06:28One of the ones that maybe was a surprise to me only in that it was so exciting to people in the room was the Mulan.
06:34Right, you know, because often at Comic-Con or D23, you want to see the stuff that has never had a trailer before.
06:41Mm-hmm.
06:42We've had a Mulan trailer, so I wasn't expecting that much from it, but they showed an extended scene.
06:46They showed a lengthy sizzle reel, and that was actually the one that was kind of getting people teared up in the room.
06:51Really?
06:52It was really quite emotional.
06:54You know, the star of that movie is kind of embroiled in controversy right now, so she was not there.
06:59But, you know, Disney, they're very good at kind of just putting a sheen on everything, glossing it.
07:03Oh, there's nothing.
07:04No controversy going on.
07:05Come see this movie.
07:06So it played really, really well.
07:08That's shocking also because there's so many Disney remakes.
07:11They're making tons of money, but people don't seem to be excited about them when you talk to them.
07:14So Mulan may be bucking that trend a little bit.
07:16Yeah, it did kind of seem like it's really showing you something new versus maybe, you know, sometimes those movies are seen as kind of a shot by shot.
07:24Mm-hmm.
07:25But this really had just some special extra stuff, yeah.
07:28There was another one that was one of the bigger surprises, I think, was Raya and the Last Dragon, which is a new Disney animation animated film.
07:35That was the biggest news to come out of it, you know, out of Disney animation because it was a totally new project.
07:41Mm-hmm.
07:42You know, East Asian inspired, and the animation, which hasn't been released online, it really did look different.
07:48It was quite beautiful, so they know what they're doing.
07:51What would you say the hypometer falls on Raya and the Last Dragon?
07:53Well, I would say that the hypometer externally is not very high because people, if you haven't gotten to see it, you don't know.
07:59Right.
08:00But I think once that starts coming out, once the trailers come out.
08:03It's gonna break the hypometer.
08:04Yeah.
08:05The last bit of real news that came out, and this was shocking for a couple of reasons, seeing as how the news that preceded it that week, was that Tom Holland showed up on stage.
08:15Tom Holland, who is still Spider-Man, but not in the MCU anymore, is Spider-Man.
08:19Yeah.
08:20And he was there with Chris Pratt.
08:21They were promoting Onward.
08:22Yep.
08:23Another animated film.
08:24Yeah, and so we're waiting the entire time.
08:26Is Tom gonna say anything?
08:27You know, he's just bantering with Chris Pratt.
08:29Mm-hmm.
08:30You know, behind me, I heard people say, chance save Spider-Man, a few of them.
08:34So I was thinking, oh, is this gonna be a moment?
08:36Nothing happens.
08:37They show the footage.
08:38Looks great.
08:39Okay, that's it.
08:40No.
08:41And he kind of gives a little, just a little acknowledgement, you know, it's been a crazy week, but I'm really grateful.
08:46I love you guys 3,000.
08:47Oh.
08:48And people went nuts.
08:49And later, he and Kevin Feige both gave little, tiny interviews to Entertainment Weekly, and they were both very gracious, you know.
08:56Holland said, yeah, I'm gonna still play him, it's still gonna be awesome.
08:59And Feige said, we knew this wasn't going to be forever, you know, I'm really proud of what we did.
09:04So very classy statement, you know, at the same time.
09:07Why'd you put that cliffhanger in if you, you know, he said.
09:09Yeah, Kevin.
09:10We told the story we wanted, so I think he's being kind of nice there.
09:14Maybe they're sort of hedging it because they're still trying to smooth things over and we can invite Spidey back into the MCU.
09:20Yeah, you never know.
09:21That could happen.
09:22You just, now our hypometer fell all the way back down.
09:24Yeah.
09:25It broke the other way.
09:27Well, a lot of things happened at D23.
09:29A lot of them were covered by Aaron and the rest of the Fantastic Hollywood Reporter team, so if you guys want to check that stuff out, it's all over the website.
09:35We want to know what you were most excited about, though, so let us know in the comments right down there.
09:38Don't forget to subscribe and join us here every Friday morning for new episodes of Heat Vision Breakdown.
09:42I know this is going to come out on a Friday, though.
09:43Yeah?
09:44Yeah.
09:45Calendars.
09:46Got it.
