Transcript
00:00Hello friends and welcome to the future.
00:02This week on Heat Vision Breakdown, we look ahead at the new year by examining the 2019
00:07most interesting stories to watch for in Hollywood and beyond.
00:09Yeah, that's way too many stories.
00:10Okay, well what if we do like 20 19 minute videos?
00:13Just do the top 10 stories like a normal person.
00:15Okay fine, jeesh.
00:16Here are the top 9 stories to watch out for this year.
00:20Oh my god.
00:22Let's start off with the obvious and immediately destroy any shot at a chronological list here
00:28by looking at number 9, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.
00:31So far, only very brief snippets of the Oscar nominated actor's take on the clown prince
00:35of crime have been showcased.
00:37But given the actor's reputation and resume, it's fair to say that interest is very high
00:41for what he will do with the character.
00:42The Jokers are no small clown shoes to step into either.
00:45There have been three Academy Award winning actors to don the white makeup on film already,
00:49and two of them did a great job.
00:50The big question is, however, can a Joker film work without Batman?
00:54Well, seeing as how the last two Batman films turned out, it's probably worth a shot to go
00:58Wayne list for this one.
00:59Number 8.
01:00Who will play Shang-Chi?
01:02Marvel Studios is looking to find an Asian director and Asian lead for a movie about Shang-Chi,
01:06which will be the studio's first Asian superhero.
01:09As Marvel continues to focus on representation, fans are already hailing this as having the
01:13potential to be the next Black Panther.
01:15What's just as interesting to think about is how a film like this could propel a filmmaker
01:19to becoming the next Ryan Coogler.
01:21It's hard to beat the MCU when it comes to exposure for an up-and-coming auteur.
01:24And as for who plays the lead, even Aquaman director James Wan is invested, telling Heat
01:29Vision earlier this month the film needs a strong Asian male lead.
01:32I can't think of one for the life of me, he said.
01:34The last person I can think of is Bruce Lee, and God, that is so sad.
01:38Bruce Lee is my father's generation.
01:39It's great.
01:40It's about time.
01:41Number 7.
01:42Who will play Batgirl?
01:43This has to be the highest profile superhero that's due for casting and expected in 2019.
01:48And there's an obvious choice.
01:49Hailee Steinfeld.
01:51Batgirl screenwriter Christina Hodson already teamed with Steinfeld for Bumblebee, a film
01:55that against all odds for a Transformers movie earned glowing reviews.
01:58Incidentally, it is the only Transformers film with a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score which
02:02should surprise literally nobody.
02:04Keep in mind, there's no director yet set for a Batgirl standalone, which will focus
02:08on the Barbara Gordon version of the character.
02:10But Hodson is also penning Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley
02:14Quinn, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn spin-off, and the most obnoxious title for a movie since
02:19Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
02:21That's due out February 7th, 2020.
02:23Could Barbara Gordon make an appearance in that film?
02:26If so, perhaps Barbara's casting will come out next year.
02:29Number 6.
02:30Can Episode 9 save Star Wars?
02:32No.
02:33Next.
02:34Save Star Wars.
02:35Alright, I'll talk about it.
02:36I'll talk about it.
02:37Jeez.
02:38It's hard to believe that a franchise as big as Star Wars could ever be considered
02:40in bad shape.
02:41But following the underperformance of Solo last summer and the, let's say, mixed reaction
02:46to The Last Jedi, Episode 9 doesn't seem to have as much buzz as one would expect for
02:50the final entry in a new Star Wars trilogy.
02:52J.J. Abrams is once again taking the helm, and while he may be a safe choice, it's hard
02:56to see how he can satisfyingly wrap up a saga that hasn't really felt like it was planned
03:00out at all since its inception.
03:02Rey is already a Jedi Master, Poe has questionable decision-making skills, Finn has already beaten
03:07Phasma, again, and the villains are either incompetent, dead, a whiny flip-flopper, or apparently
03:13completely insignificant.
03:14You know, most Snoke theories might have sucked, but at least they actually did something with
03:18the character, Rian Johnson.
03:21On the plus side, at least we get to bid a fond farewell to fan-favorite characters like
03:24Luke and Leia on the big screen for the last time.
03:27Disney's Bob Iger has hinted that there will be a slowdown when it comes to future Star
03:30Wars movies, and that's wise.
03:32With The Mandalorian and a Rogue One prequel set to debut on the upcoming Disney Plus streaming
03:36service, high-quality live-action shows may just be the new way to get a Star Wars fix.
03:41Maybe J.J. is not our only hope, at least they can't kill Luke and Han again.
03:45Number 5.
03:46What's the next Christopher Nolan movie?
03:48There have been no rumblings of what Nolan will do next following 2017's Dunkirk, but
03:52that just means no one's looking closely enough.
03:56Exhibit A.
03:57News Nolan signed on to the direct Interstellar broke January 9th, 2013, less than six months
04:03after The Dark Knight Rises opened.
04:05Exhibit B.
04:06News of Dunkirk came on December 28th, 2015, a full 14 months after Interstellar opened.
04:11What does it mean?
04:12I don't know.
04:14All I know is we are now more than a year since Dunkirk's opening and we've got nothing!
04:17It's time to give us something, please!
04:20Also bonus points if you re-team with Christian Bale.
04:22He's great.
04:23In real seriousness, what's left for Nolan to tackle?
04:25He won't be doing the next James Bond, no matter how much we hope.
04:28He's done sci-fi and a war epic since leaving the DC Universe.
04:31In an age of micro-budget horror making a huge splash at the box office, is it time for Nolan
04:36to show us what a $100 million horror epic would look like?
04:39Kubrick was 51 when he made The Shining.
04:42Nolan is almost the same age now.
04:44Coincidence?
04:45Number 4.
04:46Will we get release dates for games like Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us
04:52Part 2?
04:532018 was a big year for games.
04:55We got to be Spider-Man, Greek Gods, and Cowboys, yee-haw!
04:582019, however, may just give it a run for its money, particularly if marquee anticipated titles
05:03like CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, Hideo Kojima's bat-crazy Death Stranding, and Depressapalooza
05:09The Last of Us Part 2 all drop.
05:11Hell, even if one of those games comes this year and lives up to the hype, 2019 is shaping
05:15up to be another banner year for video games.
05:17Unlike movies, release dates for games can be announced at any time and are often much
05:21bigger reveals.
05:23Vague windows for when a game will launch are common and often get pushed back and back.
05:27That said, for games like Cyberpunk and Death Stranding, we've already seen quite a bit
05:30of gameplay footage over the past year, which could possibly be a hint that they're coming
05:35sooner than we might think.
05:36Hopefully.
05:37I want that retus fetus.
05:40Number 3.
05:41What's the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
05:44After Avengers Endgame, it's time for the MCU to reinvent itself.
05:472019 should give us hints of what's to come, most notably with Disney's acquisition of 21st
05:51Century Fox opening the X-Men and Fantastic Four to potentially be folded into the MCU.
05:56The chances are basically zero we'll see any end credit reveals of these characters in this
06:00year's Endgame, Captain Marvel, or Spider-Man Far From Home, as these films have A wrapped,
06:05and B it's unclear when the Fox-Disney deal will actually finalize and make such a thing
06:09possible.
06:10Yay, arbitration!
06:11So what could we get next year?
06:13Marvel will likely begin hiring writers or even directors to develop films surrounding these
06:17characters.
06:18Perhaps we'll even get some casting news.
06:19Imagine the frenzy when we learn there will be a new Professor X or Magneto.
06:23Because no, don't expect Kevin Feige to bring James McAvoy or Michael Fassbender and their
06:28convoluted timelines over to the MCU.
06:30The big thing to watch for will be Deadpool.
06:32Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin are attached to an X-Force team-up movie from director Drew
06:36Goddard.
06:37However, that project has been left up in the air in light of the merger.
06:40But if any actor can survive the move from Fox to Disney, it's Ryan Reynolds.
06:44Not only is he by far the most popular X-person star, the meta-nature of his character could
06:49make sense to exist at Disney, even if his character never interacts with the mainstream
06:53MCU.
06:54His movies could be set in some sort of strange alternate continuity, similar to how they exist
06:58outside the main X-Men world.
07:00Maybe we can even work Pikachu in there somewhere.
07:02In my head I saw that differently.
07:04Number 2.
07:05Can Jordan Peele live up to Get Out with Us?
07:08He earned an Oscar and two additional nominations for his directorial debut, so it's no surprise
07:12that Jordan Peele's follow-up to Get Out will be one of the most closely watched films
07:16of the year.
07:17As the first trailer for the secretive film revealed, it centers on a family plagued by evil doppelganger
07:22versions of themselves, because, sometimes, we are our own worst enemy.
07:27As the trailer makes clear, Peele is on the verge of becoming a definitive filmmaking voice,
07:31like a Nolan or a Tarantino or a Spike Lee, a director with a signature style that, even
07:36when working with a different subject matter, imbues that special something into even a trailer
07:40that makes it instantly recognizable as a Jordan Peele movie.
07:44Number 1.
07:45Winter has finally come.
07:46It's spring.
07:47Actually, I mean, it's already been here, but now it's here even more as HBO launches
07:50its last season of the mega-hit fantasy series.
07:53While the writing for the show has suffered significantly since it moved past the source
07:56material of George R. R. Martin's novels, I refer you to this diagram to illustrate
08:00my point, there is no doubt that fans worldwide are invested to see how the fate of Westeros
08:05ultimately plays out.
08:07Will Jon Snow marry his aunt?
08:09Will Jaime Lannister kill his sister slash lover?
08:11Man.
08:12Shows a lot of incest.
08:13Will Tyrion ride a dragon?
08:15How much older will the actor who plays Bran look?
08:17All these questions pale in comparison to the ultimate mystery behind this 8 season epic.
08:21Is the Night King even really a bad guy?
08:23I mean, honestly, Westeros is full of terrible, terrible people, I'm kind of rooting for the
08:27dude who literally tore down a wall.
08:29Is that Spyro?
08:31It's a dragon.
08:32Oh.
08:33Of course, even with Game of Thrones coming to an end, the world of Westeros will still
08:37continue as HBO has already ordered a prequel pilot from producer Jane Goldman and Martin,
08:42set 1,000 years before the events of the main series, with even more spin-offs planned
08:46for the future.
08:47Maybe one of them will explain why a civilization that figured out how to conquer dragons still
08:51hasn't mastered the art of indoor plumbing.
08:53Well, you've heard what we're excited for, but what are you most looking forward to in
08:582019?
08:59Let us know in the comments right down there, don't forget to subscribe, and come back
09:02here every Friday morning for new episodes of Heat Vision Breakdown.
09:05We spent all our budget on that Spyro thing.
