While the winners in four categories won't be announced live on the Feb. 24 broadcast, some question why cinematography and film editing had to be affected.
Transcript
00:00News that the awards for cinematography, film editing, live-action shorts and hair and
00:05makeup will be presented during the commercial break so the 91st Oscars has not been
00:09well received. After the announcement was made Monday, film fans took to Twitter to
00:13express their dismay, employing the hashtag presentall24, a reference to the 24
00:18awards on which the Academy members begin voting today. Among the Academy members
00:22who met the news with disappointment was La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz who
00:26reacted to the news by tweeting a thumbs-down emoji. Guillermo del Toro, director of last
00:30year's Best Picture Oscar winner The Shape of Water tweeted,
00:33If I may, I would not presume to suggest what categories to cut during the Oscars show,
00:37but cinematography and editing are at the very heart of our craft. They are not
00:42inherited from a theatrical tradition or a literary tradition. They are cinema itself.
00:46Emmanuel Lubezki, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of Gravity, Birdman and The
00:53Revenant echoed that sentiment taking to Instagram to write,
00:57Cinematography and editing are probably the elementary particles, the primordial
01:01components of cinema. It's an unfortunate decision.
01:04Keyes van Oostrom, president of the American Society of Cinematographers and an Academy
01:08member himself, agrees that the decision is an unfortunate one and noted that it was
01:12ironic that John Bailey, the current president of the Academy, is a cinematographer
01:16himself but added, I don't think he had a choice.
01:19Speaking with THR, Van Oostrom said,
01:21One member of the film editor's branch, who wished to remain anonymous, went so far as to say,
01:34I think it's a little demeaning to all of the categories that work on the movies.
01:37In the email that he sent to the Academy members on Monday, Bailey explained that the winners
01:41of the four categories that won't be presented live will have their speeches taped
01:45to air later in the broadcast. The presentations will also stream live on Oscar.com and the Academy's
01:51social channels. He also added that the affected categories will rotate from year to year
01:55and declined to explain how the four categories were chosen.
01:58The 91st Oscars will air live on ABC from LA's Dolby Theatre on February 24th at 8pm Eastern.
