00:00Big Oscars news. As a result of the global pandemic, the 2021 Academy Awards ceremony
00:04has officially been pushed back from February 28th to April 25th, 2021. And the Oscars eligibility
00:11period for feature films, which began on January 1st, 2020 and was set to expire at the end of
00:16December, has been extended to February 28th, 2021. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
00:22Sciences and its Oscars broadcasting partner ABC announced the news on Monday. The Hollywood
00:26Reporter exclusively reported on Sunday that this was set to happen. In a statement, the Academy
00:31indicated that the show will still be held at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland Center in
00:35Hollywood, and will air live on ABC, an apparent rejection of the possibility of a pre-taped and
00:41or virtual gathering. Academy president David Rubin and CEO Don Hudson said in a statement,
00:46For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring,
00:50and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope in extending
00:55the eligibility period and our awards date is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish
00:59and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone's control.
01:04And ABC Entertainment president Kerry Burke added,
01:07We find ourselves in uncharted territory this year and will continue to work with our partners
01:10at the Academy to ensure next year's show is a safe and celebratory event. It also captures the
01:15excitement of the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Meanwhile, the Academy's
01:20annual Governor's Awards, a gala dinner, usually held the second week of November, at which the
01:24organization for the past 11 years has presented honorary Oscars, will not take place this year.
01:30According to the Academy, additional info about the ceremony and selection of honorees will be
01:34provided at a later date. For much more on this story, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News,
