The Academy's board of governors has approved several major changes to the tradition-bound ceremony's format in the hope of retaining the dwindling number of Oscars telecast viewers it still has.
Transcript
00:00The Oscars are switching things up in a major way. The Academy has revealed that moving forward,
00:05they won't televise all of the awards presented. And they're adding a brand new category to
00:10recognize popular films. So, what sparked the big changes? The 2018 ceremony was the lowest-rated
00:15Oscars telecast on record. In hopes of retaining the viewers it still has and luring back others,
00:21the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors approved several major revisions
00:27to the award show. Addressing the concerns of those who find the show to be too long and boring,
00:32re-elected Academy president John Bailey and Academy CEO Don Hudson said in a letter to members
00:38that the board has committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours. They explained
00:44that this will be achieved partly by presenting select categories live in the Dolby Theater
00:48during commercial breaks — categories to be determined. Those categories will not be removed
00:54from the telecast, though. Instead, the winning moments will then be edited and aired later
00:58in the broadcast. And in another attempt to improve ratings, the Academy will also create a new category
01:05for outstanding achievement in popular film, adding that eligibility requirements and other key
01:10details will be forthcoming. If the popular film category is introduced in time for the 91st Oscars,
01:16blockbusters like Mission Impossible Fallout, Deadpool 2, Avengers Infinity War, and Black Panther,
01:22and their fan-favorite stars, will be pretty much guaranteed a presence at the ceremony.
01:26In the past, Oscar ratings have been shown to correlate with the popularity of the nominated films
01:34among the general public. The 91st Oscars are set for February 24th, 2019. So are you excited that
01:40popular films are getting their own category or do you think that the Oscars should stick with tradition?
