00:00Dreams do come true, my darling.
00:03The American Idol revival isn't going anywhere.
00:05The reality competition show has officially been renewed for a second season at ABC,
00:10marking its 17th season overall.
00:12The renewal also includes deals for series talent Katy Perry, Luke Bryan,
00:17Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest.
00:19ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said,
00:30American Idol's fate was one of the biggest questions of the 2017-2018 broadcast season.
00:35ABC and producers Fremantle Media negotiated a return for what was once TV's biggest show,
00:41just a year after it ended its 15-season run on Fox in 2016.
00:45The series aired on Sundays and Mondays for two months before a brief run of live episodes on Sunday.
00:50It also pulled a smaller audience than it did in its last season on Fox.
00:54But the new American Idol did deliver what ABC promised advertisers.
00:58Through the end of April, Idol averaged a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 for the Sunday shows
01:03and a 1.9 rating for the Monday telecast with live plus three day lifts.
01:08Both of those passed the 1.8 rating that had been guaranteed, although not by much.
01:12However, one arena where the show didn't succeed was in launching new dramas.
01:16ABC slotted mid-season shows Deception and The Crossing after Idol's Sunday and Monday telecasts,
01:22and neither managed to retain their lead-in.
01:24But promising news for the show came earlier this week,
01:27when the first live telecast popped to its highest score since the premiere.
01:31That foreshadowed a renewal that already seemed like a lock.
01:34ABC and parent company Disney had invested too much into the project to retreat after just one season.
01:39As for ABC's other unscripted shows, Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelor,
01:43America's Funniest Home Videos and Child Support have also already been renewed for the 2018-2019 season.
01:49So are you glad American Idol is coming back for another season?
