'Fire Island' writer Joel Kim Booster talks to THR about what his nomination means to him on the 2023 Emmys red carpet.
Transcript
00:00What was your reaction when you found out that Fire Island got this Emmy nomination?
00:03Uh, it was a lot of shock and surprise, to be honest.
00:06I did not think this movie would be nominated, especially not for, you know, writing on the
00:13main ceremony with all the miniseries and limited series and all of that.
00:17Like that was, that was really, I don't know, like I didn't, I was one of those people who,
00:22you know, woke up at five that day and like, you know, sat in front of the nominations.
00:26I woke up to like a hundred text messages from my friends saying congratulations.
00:30And that was kind of the best way to, to find out really.
00:33What is the fan response from people who loved this movie meant to you?
00:38It's been, it's been really meaningful because I set out to make a movie that was hyper-specific
00:42to my experience and my story and to find out that people recognize themselves in that
00:49and my specificity and that it was meaningful to them.
00:52Like that is why we do this ultimately, you know, like we want to get it out and we want
00:56to touch people and, and make them feel seen.
00:59And if my movie could do that for some people, like that's all I can ask for.
01:02Now, there are so many amazing nominees tonight here at the Emmys.
01:06Is there another nominated show that you would love to guest star on if you could?
01:09Oh, wow.
01:10Abbott Elementary.
01:11I mean, come on, I've known Quinta for many years.
01:15We, you know, it's so, it's the best part about being at events like these is seeing all
01:19the friends you started with here too and just seeing the incredible things that they're
01:24doing.
01:25And Quinta is like sort of the top of that.
01:27And it's like, yeah, I would love to be on Abbott Elementary.
01:31In her Golden Globe speech, Io thanked assistants.
01:34Is there another undersung group in Hollywood or a person in Hollywood that you think needs
01:39to be thanked?
01:40Yeah, our drivers.
01:41Every single one of these guys in a black car SUV is going through hell to get in here
01:45today and then, you know, they, they, they've definitely overheard some tense phone calls
01:52of mine.
01:53So yeah, I think the, the drivers for sure.
01:55The NDAs they have to sign, I'm sure are crazy.
