Tony Goldwyn chats with THR at the 2025 Emmys red carpet and talks about what it means to be a part of 'One Battle After Another' and working with Paul Thomas Anderson. Plus, he talks about presenting with the casts across the 'Law & Order' franchises on the Emmys stage.
00:01You look, first of all, I wouldn't normally do this with Tony Golden.
00:04We have a lot of good stuff to talk about.
00:05But we do got to talk about, you look so chic as always, but this is Armani.
00:09And so tell me, was that intentional for today?
00:12It was intentional in honor of Mr. Armani.
00:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. What a loss, right?
00:16Did you ever get a chance to meet him?
00:18I know I never did. I never did.
00:20I've worn his clothes for years, but I never got to meet him.
00:23And so you'll continue to honor him with these incredible clothes?
00:28Yeah, well, it's easy to do so because it's so beautiful, yeah.
00:32Well, Tony Golden, a lot of good things in your life.
00:36I mean, first of all, I've got to just piggyback on my friend George Panacchio here.
00:39One battle after another, people are calling the movie of the year.
00:42Have you seen it yet?
00:44Yes, I loved it. I loved it.
00:46I saw Paul screen it for me and one or two other cast members in New York a couple of weeks ago and just loved it.
00:52And listen, he's the kind of director that people flock to.
00:54I mean, even Leonardo DiCaprio said I've been trying to work with him for years.
00:56So what was the most surprising thing to you about a Paul Thomas Anderson set or working for someone like him?
01:03For me, the most surprising thing about being on set with Paul was his absolute, unadulterated, childlike joy in making a movie.
01:12I mean, it was like being in a child's playground.
01:16It was so beautiful to see.
01:18Aside from his mastery, he was having so much fun, and it's completely infectious, so everyone just wants to do their best work.
01:27And to tell a movie that sort of is an original story that speaks to this moment, what did that mean to you?
01:33Well, you know, the sort of social commentary in this film is delivered in such an incredibly entertaining way and with such a sense of humor that you can't help laughing at yourself and laughing at where we're at as a country.
01:49It takes no prisoners, but it's also a very big-hearted film, you know?
01:55So, yeah, I just loved it.
01:58You think a lot about where we are as a country, both in terms of just your work, but also your work with the Creative Coalition, too.
02:04You're back and forth to D.C. a lot.
02:05Yeah, I mean, I actually haven't worked with the Creative Coalition for some years, but I worked with a number of other, you know, charitable organizations like the Innocence Project or AmeriCares or different.
02:15Yeah, but, yeah, I used to work with the sort of, yeah, yeah, you know, that was, yeah, some years ago, but I was very involved, you know, 15 years ago or so, yeah.
02:23I forget that I said that.
02:25It's been outside in the heat for a while.
02:27Hey, then, let's talk about this, because tonight you have very important duties here on behalf of Law & Order with this reunion.
02:33Yeah, so Mariska and Ice-T and myself and Epetha and Chris Maloney are all presenting the, on behalf of the 35th, 35 years of Law & Order, we're presenting the Best Drama Series, which, and there's some incredible shows this year, so I feel very honored to present that award.
02:50Any favorites for you?
02:52I really don't want to pick, since I am presenting the award, but I do have a favorite.
02:56Yeah, God, what was I doing right now?
02:58I do have a favorite, I'm just not going to tell you what it is.
02:59Tell me off camera, privately.
03:01Absolutely, no, but, and also, being a part of that universe, I imagine, is, it's sort of a ride of patches of New York actors, but also for people to employ so many people over so many decades on this franchise, what was another surprising thing to you about stepping into the Dick Wolf universe that you didn't know before?
03:18I directed the show about 18 years ago, an episode of Law & Order, and I felt this then, but when I came into the show now, the thing that most shocked me was, number one, how thrilled everyone is to be there every day, and not jaded at all, and how hard the writers work to keep the quality up.
03:35You know, you would think after decades, they're like, okay, we know what we're doing, you know, punch the clock, and it's not like that at all.
03:48So next time we're going to have an episode of Law & Order, and we're going to try to get back to a break from Danie to the Commission.
