Joel McHale received some backlash to a question he asked on Netflix's 'Tiger King' special.
Transcript
00:00I liked the series and to be, you know, to just have a tiny little part in it
00:04and interview some of these people was really fun. And then people gave me such.
00:10Joel McHale is speaking out against the backlash he received after hosting Netflix's
00:15Tiger King special. Speaking this week with Conan O'Brien, McHale says he was shocked to
00:19receive backlash over a question he asked while hosting The Tiger King and I, a special episode
00:24of the wildly popular docuseries Tiger King Murder, Mayhem and Madness.
00:28And then people gave me such for asking if Joe Exotic should be in jail.
00:34The host says he was taken aback considering the question wasn't exactly out of left field.
00:39They were like, how dare you? How dare you? And I was like, 19 felonies?
00:44Joseph Maldonado Passage, aka Joe Exotic, was the main focus of Tiger King. A former Tiger
00:49Zoo owner in Oklahoma, Maldonado Passage is serving a 22-year prison sentence for his
00:54involvement in a murder-for-hire plot and numerous animal abuse charges.
00:58It was a weird thing because I think people see them as characters and not necessarily
01:03as human beings.
01:04McHale, being a huge fan of the original docuseries, was personally asked to host the special by
01:09Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos after the series took off.
01:13I don't know. I think Ted Sarandos, who runs Netflix, lost a bet of some sort.
