The UK faces a rinse-and-repeat weather pattern with alternating rain bands and showers driven by successive Atlantic lows. Rain stalls over the Midlands, eastern and northern England, and parts of Scotland, while Northern Ireland sees brighter skies but feels cold at around 6°C. Overnight, rain becomes showery and clears northeast, leaving clear, chilly spells with freezing fog in southeast England. Friday brings sunny spells in the east but heavy rain and strong winds in western areas, causing tricky travel. The weekend remains unsettled with frequent rain and gusty winds, though not constant. Conditions stay changeable into next week. Bringing you today’s forecast is Aidan McGivern.

00:00Hi there.
00:01We are very much in a rinse and repeat pattern as far as the weather is concerned across
00:05the UK.
00:06Bands of rain followed by showers followed by further bands of rain.
00:10All tied in with areas of low pressure, one after the other coming in from the Atlantic
00:14at the moment.
00:15This low has swung a weather front in but the isobars are opening out.
00:19In fact, another separate low is forming through central areas and that's helping to slow down
00:25the rain.
00:26The wet weather basically stalling through the Midlands, eastern and northern England,
00:30parts of Scotland during the rest of Thursday.
00:33Winds strengthening on the forward side of that through eastern and northeastern parts.
00:37Showers for northeast Scotland.
00:39Brighter skies for Northern Ireland.
00:41Also some sunny spells through the south, south-west and south Wales.
00:46But here there will be some lively showers, hail, thunder a possibility with gusty winds.
00:52So very mixed conditions across the country.
00:54Despite the sunniest skies likely across Northern Ireland, it's going to feel cold here, six
00:58celsius.
00:59Not much warmer elsewhere, especially where we've got those persistent spells of rain.
01:05The rain does indeed continue across eastern and northern England, parts of Scotland overnight.
01:10It tends to become more showery as the night goes on.
01:13It moves us into the far northeast.
01:15Clear spells emerging through Northern Ireland, much of east Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and
01:21the south-east.
01:22And here it will be a chilly night with temperatures falling close to, if not a touch below freezing,
01:27and some freezing fog patches forming, especially across south-east England.
01:32These will take until mid to late morning to clear, but away from the fog there will be
01:37some sunny spells for the Midlands, eastern England and the south-east.
01:42Elsewhere we've got strengthening winds, building cloud and the next area of rain moving into
01:47western parts.
01:48Especially Northern Ireland and Wales in the south-west will be persistent and heavy as
01:52we end the day.
01:53Tricky conditions for the Friday afternoon rush hour.
01:57Clear spells, some sunshine continuing in the east.
02:00Still some showers for Orkney and Shetland, along with a stronger breeze here.
02:05But yeah, it's going to be turning a bit milder in the south-west.
02:09Not feeling particularly mild, however, with that wet and windy weather moving in as we end
02:14Friday.
02:15So a soggy evening to come on Friday as that rain band moves its way eastwards.
02:20It will clear, but only to the next area of showers and gusty winds.
02:25These showers once more heavy and it's going to be a wet night for many as that rain clears
02:31its way through.
02:33Low pressure still in charge, followed by another low, followed by another low, etc., etc.,
02:39during the weekend and into the start of next week.
02:42So very changeable weather, there won't be raining all the time, but there will be plenty
02:46of rain around.
02:47Best way to stay across it is our YouTube channel or the Met Office app.
02:51Bye bye.
