John and Jenny dive deep into the psychology of manipulation within pseudo-Christian movements, using Youth With A Mission (YWAM) as a case study. Jenny, founder of the Indwell Movement, explains how spiritual leaders exploit trust, empathy, and worship to bypass critical thinking and enforce obedience. Together they explore concepts like mind control, cognitive dissonance, and consent—examining how emotional manipulation, purity culture, and the “always maintain the witness” mentality condition believers to suppress their own intuition.

John connects these patterns to historical cult behavior and even ancient paganism, tracing how fear and fabricated “divine wrath” are weaponized to secure loyalty. They also uncover the neurological side of manipulation—how music, repetition, and performance-based spirituality deactivate the brain’s critical centers. This powerful conversation invites listeners to question how spiritual systems use psychology, fear, and belonging to shape faith, identity, and submission.

00:30Hello, and welcome to another episode of the William Branham Historical Research Podcast.
00:36I'm your host, John Collins, the author and founder of William Branham Historical Research
00:40at william-branham.org.
00:43And with me, I have my co-host and friend, Jenny McGrath, founder of Indwell Movement and
00:48Somatic Experiencing Practitioner.
00:51Jenny, it's good to be back, and I'm so glad to have you on board to talk through not only
00:56the YWAM, Youth with a Mission, but also just the mental health aspects of all of it.
01:03I'm sure you've talked to people from other groups as well, but I'm so interested to dive
01:09deeper into the, I don't know what you call it, I guess manipulation of the children that
01:15is happening in Youth with a Mission, if there is any.
01:18So, I'm wanting to, you know, open your head up a little bit and dig in and see what's
01:23in there.
01:24And hopefully you don't feel like a guinea pig, but I have, as I said, when we recorded
01:29your story, I have like hundreds of ideas of things that I really want to know about
01:34not only YWAM, but the broader, bigger picture.
01:37So, thank you so much for doing this and coming on.
01:40Absolutely.
01:41Thank you so much for having me.
01:42I'm excited to be back.
01:44And these are things that I typically nerd out on by myself, so it feels really fun to
01:50get to nerd out on them with someone else.
01:54For me, this is very interesting stuff.
01:56And the history behind it, I think, is what drives me to really nerd out.
02:01I'm a little surprised that this history is as sinister as it is.
02:06And yet, from the surface, when you examine it, none of these groups look sinister.
02:11You would look at this and think they're, I hate to use the phrase, shiny, happy people.
02:15And then you get underneath and, oh my gosh, what was this?
02:19And why are they doing this?
02:20So, yeah, let's talk about manipulation.
02:24I guess because you're more qualified than me, you have the schooling.
02:29I don't.
02:30I want it.
02:31And maybe I'll do that someday.
02:32Maybe let's just talk a little bit about manipulation itself.
02:37What are the shapes and forms that manipulation come in?
02:40And especially with regards to a pseudo-Christian movement, how does it look for pseudo-Christians?
02:48For me, it's actually a really big reason why I call what I do indwell.
02:55Because I think that there's no better way to, and I say better in quotes, to manipulate someone
03:03than to get them outside of themselves.
03:07And if you have someone distrusting their own reality, their own experiences, then they are that much
