The controversy over the U.S. military radar system installed at the ANR Robinson Airport continues to escalate. Tobago's Minority Leader Kelvon Morris is accusing the Government and the Tobago House of Assembly of bypassing the island's leadership and keeping Tobagonians in the dark about the project. He says the secrecy surrounding the radar has triggered fear, distrust, and even economic fallout and therefore calls on the electorate to signal their dissention January 12th.
00:00Tobago House of Assembly Minority Leader Calvin Morris says the ANR Robinson Airport falls squarely under the remit of the THA.
00:09As such, he argues that any activity on their compound, especially the installation of a U.S. military radar, should have involved Chief Secretary Farley-Augustin.
00:20All of this would have transpired without prior consultation with the people of Tobago by this UNC-TPP coalition government.
00:30And this issue has left the people of Tobago extremely traumatized.
00:38As a matter of fact, Tobagonians feel disrespected and also betrayed.
00:43MAURICE SAYS THE CONFLICTING EXPLANATIONS OFFERED BY PRIME MINISTER KAMALA PASANT-BASASA HAS DEEPENED DISTRUST ACROSS THE SISTER AISLE.
00:52We in Tobago woke up one morning to thunderous roars of a plane soaring through the skies,
01:03leave, departing the ANR International Airport.
01:06And at that moment, we became very terrified and horrified because prior to that, we have not heard anything like that at that time of the morning.
01:17He adds that the secrecy hasn't ended.
01:20It appears that there continues to be the inflows of military planes.
01:26And I understand up to last evening, there was some sighting of drones as well.
01:32Did you, at any period of time while that radar was being installed,
01:42visited the premises of the ANR International Airport with the chairman of the airport's authority to view said radar system?
01:54And did you, at that very meeting, when you went to the airport, met with military officials from the U.S.?
02:06Because, you see, at this time, there is a lot of misinformation and untruths that are being told about this story.
02:16He says he was stunned to see the radar being presented on a TPP platform as a gift to the people of Tobago.
02:23Imagine that.
02:25This radar that makes Tobago a prime target in the event of any escalation between conflicting sovereign foreign countries
02:37now is being purported and being sold to Tobagoians as a gift when our lives are at risk.
02:47With the THA election set for January 12th, Morris is urging Tobagoians to voice their discontent at the polls.
02:56And I'm saying to Tobagoians going forward, this issue of the radar must be decided with your voting finger.
03:05He maintains the radar poses health risks and says the controversy has already led to a wave of tourism cancellations from hotels and cruise lines.
