The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg breaks down how television streamers have dominated the Emmys race in the latest episode of ‘Face Time With Feinberg.’
Transcript
00:00Hi everyone, I'm Scott Feinberg, the awards columnist for The Hollywood Reporter and thank
00:06you for tuning in to FaceTime with Feinberg, a video series in which I spout off about an
00:11awards related topic. Today I want to talk about the rise of the streamers at the Emmys. Yes,
00:16everyone knows that Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu have been on the march over the last several
00:21years with Netflix consistently battling HBO for the most nominations of any platform and series
00:27wins going to Hulu for The Handmaid's Tale in 2017 and to Amazon for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in 2018
00:34and Fleabag in 2019. And yes, each of those three streamers returned to serious contention this year.
00:43Netflix garnered an astounding 129 nominations and its drama The Crown is likely to bring the service
00:49its first series win. Hulu meanwhile nabbed 25 noms and Amazon 19. But what to me has not been
00:56discussed enough is the remarkably rapid rise of three other streamers, none of which even existed
01:01two years ago. Apple TV Plus launched on November 1st 2019 and this year garnered 34 nominations
01:08across nine different shows, including Ted Lasso, which is the most nominated rookie comedy series
01:14ever and the favorite to win the best comedy series award among other honors.
01:19My decision to bench Jamie was a master stroke. I don't think we're allowed to talk like that at work anymore.
01:23Disney Plus meanwhile entered the fray less than two weeks after Apple TV Plus on November 12th 2019
01:29and this year has 71 nominations across nine different shows, including Best Drama Series nominees
01:35The Mandalorian, which is nominated in the category for the second year in a row and is tied with the crown
01:40for the most nominations of any program and a Best Limited or Anthology Series nom for WandaVision,
01:47not to mention a haul of other noms for the film version of Broadway's Hamilton.
01:52And then there's HBO Max, which dropped on May 27, 2020, barely a year ago, and like Apple TV Plus,
02:00comes into this year's Emmys with 34 nominations across nine different shows, including Best Comedy
02:05Series nominees The Flight Attendant and Hacks.
02:08John, didn't you say you wanted to get your mustache once?
02:10No.
02:10Huh. I guess I just thought it.
02:13Now, there's no doubt that the pandemic expedited the ascension of these platforms.
02:17People were stuck at home and looking for new things to watch.
02:20But considering that no streamer had received an Emmy nomination until eight years ago,
02:24when Netflix broke through with Arrested Development, Hemlock Grove and House of Cards,
02:29it's still pretty remarkable that there are now six streamers at the center of the Emmy conversation.
02:35That's all for now. Thank you for tuning in to FaceTime with Feinberg.
