00:00I'm Tiffany Taylor for The Hollywood Reporter and welcome to our Emmy season preview.
00:10With voting about to kick off, we're looking at what could be one of the most unpredictable
00:13Emmys in years and we have The Hollywood Reporter's awards expert Scott Feinberg here to take
00:17us through it all.
00:18Thank you for being here Scott.
00:19Thanks for having me.
00:20So first, let's take a look at the upcoming Emmy dates that we need to watch out for.
00:23Yeah, the nominations period starts June 12th and runs through July 13th and then there's
00:28a bit of a wait until the actual Emmys itself which will be September 17th, but a lot of
00:33campaigning goes on before June 12th and then after we learn the nominees.
00:38So let's talk about the drama category which is missing a pretty big piece this year with
00:41Game of Thrones.
00:43Season 7 was pushed back until July, so what does that mean for the category this year?
00:47There's a big gap there.
00:48This is the show that won the last two years in a row for Best Drama Series.
00:52It was a dominant player as far as most nominations, most wins and now that's not going to be there.
00:58So I expect that the other nominees that were in the mix last year will have a pretty strong
01:03case this year.
01:04You're talking about Better Call Saul, The Americans, Homeland, House of Cards and Mr.
01:09Robot.
01:10But there's a healthy dose of new shows that are also in the mix.
01:13Definitely.
01:14What shows do you think we need to watch out for that are those first year shows that might
01:17sneak in there?
01:18Well, actually the streaming services have come on strong this year.
01:21So Netflix has given us both The Crown and Stranger Things, either one of which could win.
01:27And Hulu is surprisingly, really for the first time, a big player with The Handmaid's Tale,
01:32which has come on late and come on strong and has a lot of support.
01:36So we could see one of them sneak through.
01:38No show from a streaming service has ever won a series Emmy.
01:42So how far away do you think we are from that happening?
01:44This could very well be the year.
01:45I think they've never had more good options from streaming services and they've never had
01:50less of an HBO impediment to getting there.
01:53With the current political climate, how do you think that will affect nominations and
01:56wins for shows like The Americans and House of Cards and Homeland?
02:00It's going to be interesting to see because in the age of Trump, House of Cards, the corruption
02:06and things that seem so crazy and dramatic no longer seem as implausible.
02:11The Americans maybe seems more prescient and an insight into what's going on.
02:16Mr. Robot, we're talking about hacking.
02:18We're in the middle of looking at a nationwide international investigation into how that may
02:23have shaped the election.
02:24So there's certainly a sense of timeliness about a lot of these, Homeland too.
02:28This is about terrorism around the world and we're certainly dealing with that.
02:33Do you have a list of nominees who you think will be nominated for this category?
02:36It's a little early to start committing, but I think that I would be very surprised if
02:41The Crown, Stranger Things, and some of the past nominees like House of Cards, which Netflix
02:48is still very much behind.
02:49If they're not back in the mix, I think it's more on the bubble for shows like Better Call
02:54Saul and even Mr. Robot.
02:56Just again because the excitement factor of a Mr. Robot may now have transferred to something
03:02like The Handmaid's Tale.
03:03So I think we'll have a healthy mix of new shows, new nominees, first-time nominees,
03:09with returning contenders.
03:11There's no way that we don't see at least a few of the past nominees returning to the
03:17mix.
03:18Probably Homeland, I would say, is looking good as well.
03:20Well, we'll find out more when the Emmy nominees are announced in July, but until then, for more
03:24Emmy's coverage from Scott Feinberg, you can go to THR.com slash The Race.
