Writer and Director of 'Past Lives' Celine Song shares the audience reactions she connects with the most, what the movie is supposed to mean to each individual person and more at the 2024 Oscars.
00:00When I watched Past Lives, I uncontrollably bawled and sobbed.
00:05Is that the reaction that most people tell you that they had when they saw the film?
00:08Or what did they tell you about what their reaction was when they watched it?
00:12Well, I think that's sometimes the reaction, and I think it's often the reaction, which I think is so amazing.
00:17But I think that the reaction that I feel really connected to the most is when an audience member tells me that they really needed the movie.
00:24That they needed the movie in their lives, that maybe they didn't know they needed it, and then they met the movie.
00:30And they realized that they needed it.
00:31And I think that, to me, is really moving to me.
00:33Because the fact that you get to make a movie that at least one person needs, to me, I'm like, oh, what an amazing, amazing dream.
00:43So that means a lot to me.
00:45When Greta was on our Actress Roundtable, she said that her mom had a really emotional reaction to the movie.
00:50Is there someone in your life that had an emotional reaction to the movie?
00:53Well, I think a lot of people.
00:57It feels weird to point out to one because I feel like, and also I believe that the movie is the kind of thing that it's meant to mean something to you specifically, depending on where you are in your life and what kind of love you have.
01:10So you might be 16 and never been in love, or maybe 60 and hasn't felt love in a bit.
01:14Or maybe you're 34 and going through something right now.
01:18So I feel like in that way, it's just always this amazing, it's just an amazing thing to know that depending on where you are in your life, the movie is going to mean something different to you.
01:28What's been the highlight of your award season journey with Past Lives?
01:31I mean, being here is pretty good, no?
01:33I love being here and talking to you, and I just feel so honored to be nominated, and I'm just happy.
01:40Every day is such a high point.
01:42Who has been your award season BFF, your best friend during this award season craziness?
01:47I feel like, I mean, I don't want to make anybody feel like they're not, you know.
01:54But, I mean, honestly, I'm going to say the thing that's true, which is that my husband,
01:58Yeah, this is my plus month, and all these things, and I'm always like, you know.
