Bill Nighy talked to the Hollywood Reporter about being nominated for his movie ‘Living’ on the Oscars 2023 red carpet.
Transcript
00:00What does it mean to you to be nominated for this role and here tonight at the Oscars?
00:05It's a very, it feels good. It feels great. You know, it's great for the movie because
00:12we're an independent movie and this is our one way of traveling because we don't have
00:16any other plan B and now we don't have big money for publicity or anything and now millions
00:21and millions of people know about our film so it's a great thing. I get a nomination
00:25and they open the movie in 600 more cinemas. That's the result. Job done kind of thing.
00:30As more people have continued to see it, what has the audience response meant to you?
00:35It means a great deal. I mean, you know, it would to anybody, you know. It's a film that
00:41I knew we were making a good film. I thought that we would make a, you know, an interesting
00:45and important film but I didn't, I had no, nothing prepared me for the reaction and people
00:49have really taken it to their hearts and, you know, my phone has been blowing up ever
00:54since it was really, you know, that kind of thing and people are moved by it and inspired
00:58by it, you know, and galvanized by it. They hit the street and they want to get stuff done,
01:03which is sort of what the film is for. Yeah. What message do you hope audiences take away
01:07from the film? Just that, to live life to the fullest? Well, yeah, live life to the fullest,
01:11grab the day every day. You know, there's that irritating thing that people always say,
01:15which nobody can do, which is live every day as if it were your last. I mean, who can pull
01:19that off? But it is about, yeah, it's about the, you know, procrastination is the great
01:25corrosive element. And me personally, I can, I can procrastinate at an Olympic level. I can
01:31put anything off, anything you've got for as long, when I die, there will be a long list
01:35of things I just didn't quite get round to. You know what I mean? But I, but I'm trying and
01:41I, and all, everything I do, including this, is, is, puts me in vigorous opposition to that
01:46tendency. And I use work, like a lot of people, I use work as a way of getting myself up in the
01:51morning. All of awards season has led to this night here tonight at the Oscars for you. What's
01:57one moment from your journey with this film that you'll never forget? I think, uh, I think meeting
02:03Adam Sandler was a big thing for me because I admire him as much as I admire anybody. And he was such
02:08a gracious and, uh, generous person. And, uh, I was very, very, uh, I was very moved by meeting
02:17him because I've admired him for a long, long time. That was one thing. And, and also, uh,
02:22you know, hanging out with all of the guys. I mean, it's a very sort of unique situation
02:27where it's all the same people, every award ceremony, you know, this is our eighth award
02:31ceremony. That's before you, that's after the festivals, which, of which there were six.
02:35And so we've been around, we've been together for a while, you know, there's Austin and Brendan
02:40and Colin and myself and Paul. And, uh, you know, it's a, it's a unique situation, a unique
02:45relationship because we wish each other. Well, they're all very, very, they're all spectacular
02:49people and they're all very decent. And, uh, but it's just an odd, you know, situation to
02:54be in. Given that you've gotten to know of the, all the other nominees, I've been asking
02:59people tonight who their award season best friend has been like the best friend they've made
03:03this award season. Can you pick one or just all the guys? Well, I've been hanging out
03:07with Kate Blanchett and she's, and I've, I've known her for a long time and I haven't seen
03:10her for a while. And she's just a sensational human being as well as a spectacular artist.
03:17And, uh, but she's also incredibly good company and it's been very nice to hang out with her.
03:21And finally, if you win the Oscar tonight, do you know where you, where you will put it?
03:25I have no idea because, and I, I have no, I have no real expectation of winning. I really
03:31don't see it happening. I can't find it in my, you know, in my anywhere, but, uh, should I,
03:37I don't know where it would go. I don't, I don't know what you do with Oscars. I think you're supposed
03:40to put them in the bathroom, aren't you, or something? I don't know. I mean, you can't have
03:43them in the living room because it's too ostentatious. So I don't know. Maybe you build a shrine
03:48and go and visit it, visit them now and again. I don't know.
