David Dastmalchian Talks Comic Series With Dark Horse & Wanting To Be A Werewolf

David Dastmalchian spoke with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet of the THR and FX 'What We Do In The Shadows' Vampire Nightclub at San Diego Comic-Con.

00:00You're here at Comic-Con promoting your comic series, right?

00:03What can you tell us about it and what your experience has been like so far this weekend?

00:07Well, it's, first of all, so cool to be at the Hollywood Reporter Party that is also celebrating what we do in the shadows

00:13because two of my favorite things are movies, TV shows, and horror.

00:20Now, I've been collecting comic books my whole life, and the comic series that I write, Count Crowley for Dark Horse,

00:25is about a horror host who works on a TV show, but in secret, she's a monster hunter,

00:32and she's fighting monsters, vampires are real, just like they are in what we do in the shadows,

00:37werewolves, all creatures of the night, but what we know about them has all been a lie,

00:42and so the show is about uncovering the truth in both our shared mythology, but also within ourselves.

00:49Now, because we are here celebrating what we do in the shadows, and you being a bit of a vampire expert yourself,

00:54I would say, I want to play some vampire would-you-rather with you.

00:59So, first one, would you rather be a vampire or a werewolf?

01:03A werewolf, because a vampire is eternal life, and to me that is, like, the most extreme kind of punishment.

01:11A werewolf, I kind of feel like a bit of a werewolf, like I, um, I think that's my, like, spirit monster.

01:17I love that, your spirit monster.

01:20And as far as vampire powers, would you rather have the ability to fly or the ability to hypnotize people?

01:26Definitely the ability to fly.

01:28I have dreamt about flying since I was a little kid.

01:31I was just in Melbourne, Australia, making a new film,

01:34and they're famous for their flying boxes, the giant bats.

01:38So, we went out into the Yara Bend, and we actually got to see thousands of giant bats.

01:45They're the most beautiful creatures flying all over, and I was like, that's, that's my happy place.

01:51Would you rather have super vampire strength or heightened vampire senses?

01:57Super vampire strength?

01:58My sense is, I'm a very sensitive person.

02:00I have very delicate skin.

02:02I have delicate feelings.

02:03I feel like I'm already sensitive, so I think I would much rather be, um, strong,

02:08because I'm not very strong.

02:09I'm kind of delicate.
