I was invited here last year by Lena Dunham who was the guest editor and I
00:04
sat right there and I cried for two hours and I was so moved by you young
00:10
women and what your what your goals are and what what a adversity you faced and
00:17
that this program that Steve and Debbie have fostered in such a great way with
00:22
so many people's support was the best thing I'd ever seen and it still is and
00:26
it was the best day I'd had in Los Angeles in a long time and it's happening
00:30
again so I got in the car and I called Steven and said what can I do to help
00:36
and he immediately said give money and and and I said okay I have to call my
00:43
daughter first because I have you know we have a rule about this but we have an
00:47
idea and I called Billy who is supposed to be doing this the little nasty person
00:53
that she is but she's in India traveling so you know my favorite thing public
00:58
speaking is happening I said Billy I've got this idea I just saw this thing and
01:03
she said let's give a scholarship in mom's name and so I called Steven back and
01:09
he said this is so simple and he basically got twice as much money out of
01:13
me as I intended to give him and then it happened again anyway I'm happy to do it
01:20
we're happy to do it so this is a scholarship that's a full scholarship in
01:24
Carrie Fisher's name
01:28
and food
01:32
for for many of you young women that have applied you probably only know Carrie
01:40
one way and I brought a picture that was the picture that she she insisted that if
01:47
we ever had to use a picture of her that this is the picture we would use and for
01:53
those of you that know her you know it's true there is another picture of her that
01:59
is more of the picture that is the author that is probably more representative of
02:05
what this is but but they're both Carrie Fisher as you guys know so so that all
02:12
happened Billy and Sherry and a group of us sat in a room in Sherry's conference room
02:16
and read all of your applications and one person after the other is deserving
02:21
and face things that you can't imagine you don't see in any lifetime movie it's so
02:26
much harder and so much worse but they do it with grace and with such
02:30
intelligence and so for anyone this is a plea for me for Steven he didn't ask me to
02:34
do this anyone so moved all you got to do is call Steven Galloway afterwards and
02:39
have your company or have you as an individual give money any amount of money
02:43
helps it changes these people's lives I beg you to do it up okay so
02:51
Steven asked me to say a little bit about Carrie which Billy did to Billy wrote a
02:56
really long thing from India I said that's not gonna happen and so here it is
03:01
Carrie really was one of those great you know contradictions she battled mental
03:08
illness her entire life and for most of her life she didn't know to call it that
03:13
and people didn't know what it was or why she was using drugs or why she had
03:17
aberrant behavior or why she couldn't get out of bed at times that was a mood
03:21
called Pam the rollicking Roy was the fun guy that's who you counted on coming to
03:26
town every once in a while but this was her entire life Carrie's biggest regret was
03:31
not being able to be educated she started in show business she's with her mom on
03:35
stage and 14 in the show called Irene and it all went from there she shampoo and
03:41
then that little thing called Star Wars happened and she used the joke that she
03:45
went to the you at to USW which was the University of Star Wars and there were no
03:50
professors there there was no education whatsoever cut to Carrie and I meet a
03:56
long time she teaches me how to talk literally I didn't know how to talk when I
03:59
came from Louisiana but she taught me and Billy's a young child and we're in bed on a
04:04
Sunday morning and we're reading the newspaper and I remember it so well
04:08
there's a Turner classic movie going on in the background probably a war movie she
04:13
liked those not musicals and we I got up to go to the kitchen to get a cup of
04:17
coffee and said can I get you anything and she said without missing a beat yes a
04:22
professor and I looked at her I said what are you talking about she goes it's just a
04:27
dream of mine I want to hire a professor to follow me around and teach me stuff and
04:32
so and she meant it she tried to do it it didn't work out so well so today all of
04:41
you are making possible and our family's happy to make possible someone's dreams is
04:45
to get a professor and to get an education and so I'd like to call up the
04:50
winner of the first Carrie Fisher award who is Natalie Lopez I'm a very emotional
04:58
person so I'm so sorry I want to thank Stephen and thank you so much Brian for
05:06

05:11
