00:00our biggest spenders you ready transforming kitchens and boosting nutrition I got some spice
00:10I didn't put any in there all to save our hard-earned cash two drollies come on people we get
00:16revealing expert help it's actually a myth that sugar is linked to hyperactivity how can you just
00:21say that with a straight face and even let you guys in on the act nothing to really blow your
00:25soft soft I don't mind that at all it's time we all learned to eat well for less where do we start
00:30we'll show you meet a family who are trying get three potatoes please but failing to eat balanced
00:37nutritious meals not like trying everything that I want to try can we bring a smattering of
00:43compromise to the dinner table in this classic teen dad battle of wills do you reckon we're gonna go
00:49okay no this time we're in lush green titarangi helping a newly formed family of three we're the
01:06delegates dad Jared is a change manager he's recently separated from his wife and is now
01:13soul-soul parenting son Jordan 13 lives with him full-time while other son Kyan 12 lives with them
01:20every second week being a family of three and working out what that looks like is part of this
01:24process it's just about finding what works for us and how we work together as a as a team solo
01:31parenting is new to Jared and with it comes extra concerns yes it's all me it's all me just doing
01:37everything at the moment it's just you know they're alive they're breathing that's a good start and I
01:43guess we're having fun with it so as we're going through this we're trying to find our feet in terms
01:47of what we can and can't eat how many young pies you guys want to pull time dad working full time and
01:56trying to juggle everything as well lots of people do it but it's I guess for me it's a little bit it
02:02feels different because it's kind of just all kind of just happened it's just a constant thought
02:07process about what's next what are we gonna have for lunch what are we gonna have it done and that
02:10sort of stuff so yeah you're making your own pizza yeah moving between two households means the boys
02:17have two very different diets so at mum's house we don't eat meat at all it's all like grains and
02:23organic and stuff I think that has a good balance between the healthy food and then not so healthy
02:30food like carbs to teenage boys they are big eaters it is hard to keep up and making sure of
02:37giving them enough on their plates to keep the boys fed Jared often has to cook three different
02:42meals to make sure everyone gets something they'll eat definitely dealing with I think
02:47picky eaters will know what they like to eat I think is probably a better way of saying rather
02:53than picky I just kind of don't like the some of the things they eat I'm hoping the boys will be really
02:58open to trying new stuff and give it a go not just go oh taste it and not like it try one of mine it's
03:05got tomato sauce on the top it's nice mine's nice so just how open are Jordan and Kyan to having some
03:11of their favorite foods swapped out now I've like tried everything that I want to try the things that
03:16cannot be swapped out in my opinion would be the aioli and the kind of crisp sweet bye like chocolate I
03:22don't want that to be swap for something else because it could be really disgusting and I
03:26won't like chocolate again nothing can replace these yeah not much compromise there boys let's
03:35get things underway with a typical weekly shop monitoring secretly from the supermarket stock
03:41room are chef Michael and restauranteur Ganesh here we go Ganesh what do we got we have oh this
03:48is different dad two kids teenage boys they eat a lot of food those teenage boys let me get up my
03:54list and he has a list on his phone and you get celery and you get two cucumbers and a broccoli please
04:00heaps of veggies yeah but you know what I haven't seen any fruit growing get three potatoes please this
04:06is a different shopper yeah this man's on a mission you know can you also get garlic bread look he's got
04:12the boys doing what they need to do I guess I mean are they getting what they need to get well
04:16they're not grabbing anything extra yeah everything's on the list get this one what
04:22chicken kievs which one is it the green packet once you go to that chicken Kiev box you're gonna
04:27spend a lot of money how many do we need huh yeah two please I would love to see how much they are I
04:33don't want to see how much there I know how much they're gonna be that's just a bad call that one
04:38oh look at those freezer bars 12 in a box will they taste any good uh they'll probably be rubbish
04:45okay a lot of salt a lot of fat and a lot of processed products from the freezer a lot of frozen stuff
04:52right you got pies chippies ice cream and you get the chocolate breads that way this is called free
04:59men shopping that's right oh thanks buddy hey um I got one packet of mallow puffs this is what happens
05:05when you uh open the gates of sweet food you want some more yes I do thank you okay can you also get
05:12to Tim Tams because there's they're on special sometimes do you want some more okay I'll have
05:16more yes it's canned lentils and stuff they're not they're not bad not bad choices you know spring water
05:22and good protein what else doing oh we need butter chicken yeah butter chicken in a jar time and time
05:29again now we see this convenience food people love this stuff you need crisps for the movie family
05:34treat movie night you've had biscuits they've had lots of different stuff already they've had the ice
05:38greens more chips more so where's the fruit okay Pringles it's fine brands brands brands lots of
05:45brands I think that's that so they're going for boy food those pies and stuff now we've got to fix
05:51that time for our boys to sort these boys out you know what I'm looking for you I'm looking for a
06:08meal is this really a week mostly yeah wow because it's not a lot of food is it so look let's take
06:14this around to the two let's start with the expensive stuff over the strip $17 so we just
06:26spent 850 on each one of these how close to the list are you today close enough that I have you got
06:32your list no I delete it as I go oh you're very smart that way we can't check it that's it oh so
06:37this is garlic butter hello garlic butter I've never met you before it's garlic and butter together oh
06:42my god that's a serious man's home team this isn't just old school not good for you okay a lot of
06:48cheese we love cheese yes so and for the dogs because we've got two dogs and they like cheese too so
06:53the cheese is for the dogs and for us but really for the dogs no because I use it for macaroni cheese and
06:59cheese on toast and that sort of stuff and the dogs yes and the dogs $9.90 yes I'm lucky dogs I've
07:06never seen these what is that potato roasties so it's chunks of potatoes yeah have you got any raw
07:12potatoes on there how much are they four bucks let's do this experiment this is good this is good look at
07:19that dollar 54 it's less than half the price just to do potatoes by themselves this is delicious and a
07:25supermarket own yeah really good quality macaroni there's not a lot of fruit here I'm not a big
07:31fruit eater so none of us really are ah yes the old Lauren and again springboarder would you consider
07:38a supermarket owned brand yeah yeah absolutely you would yeah okay it comes down to taste yes
07:43because he's probably the but you won't just buy just because it's a brand will you no yes it's not
07:52a lot of salmon in there a lot of plastic not a lot of salmon let's see $14 whoa okay moving on so
08:01this this is fruit there we go who said we didn't have fruit yeah in a really bad form what sugar 22.9
08:08grams in the average serving that a lot extremely lovely cheese this must be for the dog no is the
08:19dog French just no so that's the end of everything that is that how many supermarket own brains are
08:26there I feel like there was maybe one so kids how much do you think you spend today 114 140
08:33200 here you go 269 that's not bad that's better than I thought I yeah there was a whole lot of
08:41surprises with the salt content I think which was probably more concerning for me yeah I because I
08:49didn't read labels I look at what I'd like and what it looks like on the shelf and I buy it based on
08:53that before Jared and the boys get home Michael and Ganesh run ahead for a poke around in the pantry
08:59just to see what's there already oh can we get some garlic butter do these last for a long time I
09:06have no idea because if not that's a waste we do have a few brands we do love their brands oh look
09:11there's more tell me something what is the difference between like regular brands and
09:16the fancy pants brands very little that's what I was thinking so it's just cost isn't it and beautiful
09:21packaging oh yes fridgy time oh grapes two weeks past its use by date this this concerns me look at
09:30that I mean that's just a lot of money for butter and more butter mayonnaise I only more I only to make
09:38garlic I only what do you do you take this and you add garlic and save money so we need to show these
09:45guys to stop doing all this and buy just butter that looks really good right huh that's really
09:52good look at all the fresh veggies they've got in there all we have to do is combine that some of
09:55those spices yeah and we're on a winner delicious absolutely now Jared and the boys get to see the
10:02reality of their food hall it's an interesting shop it is not as big as I thought it would be
10:11looking at it all spread out on the table but it also does show me a lot of things that I didn't
10:18see in the trotty like all of this carb and all of this sugar that's just running down here tell us
10:27a little bit about this bit here which is fries bread chippies chocolate bread fries bread pasta yeah
10:35there it is quite bread heavy but toast in the morning so the boys have toast for breakfast and
10:40sandwiches but essentially yeah there's a lot of bread ideally I'd like to get rid of some of this
10:45macaroni cheese not so much we're not saying macaroni cheese is wrong we're just looking for
10:49a balance on this table totally so the tower of lard and I wish it was real too because a lot of this
10:58isn't actually butter we use them for different things this doesn't make sense because you're
11:02spending a ton of money on this absolutely so I'd like one butter absolutely this is what I call a
11:07holiday killer because you keep doing this and eventually you never go on holiday because you
11:12spend all your money on this stuff correct yep all right to talk about spend so you spend today was
11:18267 yep average Kiwi family of your size so three people guess how much 150 287 dollars so we're under
11:30that great no it's not great it's not great let me tell you why it's not great yes all right the
11:36things you're spending your money on aren't actually going the whole hog for your family in terms of
11:41nutrition notice no fruit on this table what we want to do is add to your budget almost increase it
11:48and then make it go for longer with better fruit better vegetables better protein and better meals yeah
11:55that sounds good all right yes because right now it's not doing enough for your family okay are you
12:02up for what is going to be quite a shift for you yeah absolutely absolutely yes yes yes let's shake on
12:09that and are you guys here to help dad and help us yeah well done team it's not okay great where do we
12:15start we'll show you I'm ready for the changes that are coming yeah especially giving a little butters
12:21yeah you look at that table yeah whole lot of carbohydrates a lot of bread sugar salt yeah and
12:35all that fat and the thing that worries me is I don't know whether he wants to change because he got a
12:39bit defensive when we were it's got two teenage boys yeah who are directly influenced by him so whatever
12:45he does the sons are gonna follow it exactly and they're watching his every moves yeah we need
12:50to get those kids in the kitchen we need to get them cooking I'm not sure how much we're gonna save
12:53them bread yeah and I don't even think it's about that mmm I think it's about you know cutting out
12:58those carbs getting those kids cooking some good food yeah and getting some fruit into them that's it
13:03well hopefully we can do that we'll see yes we will will the food swaps get a rocky start find out next
13:11everything just looks cheap it's day one and while the delegates are out of the house we've been
13:20working out what can stay and what really needs to go their pricey brands are now nowhere to be seen
13:27some favorites are off the menu and others have been swapped out for healthier and cheaper options in
13:32plain packaging yeah wait so we can't even go into these cupboards so we'll just have to open up
13:40this one and have a look what's inside for me this is nothing looks like I expected to look so fix me
13:51yeah I think the bagels are different they feel harder yeah they do look cheaper everything just
13:59looks cheap and chickpeas it's just it's just weird it's just it just doesn't feel right yeah it's okay
14:09it's okay you've got to be kidding me now that we've seen that should we look in the freezer whoa
14:25these are different they are different you can tell they've got like little grooves in them here the
14:32other ones don't have grooves one swap requires an immediate taste test from ice block aficionado
14:38Jared I think they're gonna taste different like a hundred percent they do taste different try it if
14:48these are cheaper would you go for these over the other ones I would you would what about you yeah
14:52they're actually quite nice I probably wouldn't because I like the chocolate in the middle as well
14:57would you get rid of the chocolate in the middle to save money I don't think I could do you know I'd
15:02rather get rid of the mellow puffs and get rid of these what okay not the best start to our food
15:07swaps but it can only get better from here right so what do you guys reckon for this week with this
15:13and everything else we've seen do you reckon we're gonna go okay no it's gonna be harder than I thought
15:20because I looked at that cupboard and I thought with all the pretty things yeah I'm really about how it
15:27looks that's pretty superficial gonna be a challenge but hopefully I get some new foods and tastes out of
15:35this experience yeah it could be really fun the first steps clear getting dad on board with healthy
15:42brand-free eating and the boys liking the same meal time for Ganesh to work his magic this is exciting it
15:49is very we're in the kitchen I'm excited because I feel like you're ready to like learn something we're
15:55making ginger soy beef today on a beautiful salad to keep the price down they're using blade cut so the
16:03first thing I do is I get rid of all the bits that I don't want it's all the kind of viney
16:07that sinewy bits it's a little bit more work but I tell you what it's almost ten to twelve dollars
16:12cheaper slice the meat into even sized pieces then add sesame oil to a heated pan oh yeah don't add
16:20the steak until it's ready to sizzle you get in there and just make sure they're not sticking to
16:26each other and the moment you've got them separated leave them about two minutes on each side and they're
16:32done then put the meat aside to rest next step is we're gonna make the slaw and you're gonna help me
16:38great cabbage and carrot and chop up some cucumber see the boys could be in here doing this bit
16:44couldn't they yeah while Jared preps the salad Ganesh cuts onions and garlic for the Asian inspired
16:50sauce chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop chop take all your angst if you've had a tough day this is a
16:54great dish for you okay perfect a lot of people forget to put the hot pan on or leave it really
16:59really hot before they start their work because they're afraid it's going to burn but here's the
17:03secret to making sure something doesn't burn don't let it burn sauce time now cook onions and garlic for
17:13one minute then add vinegar ginger sweet chilli and soy and you're gonna tell me what we need oh
17:19probably less of the sweet chilli so bring the soy in so you lift the soy that's better does it need to
17:28be more sweet for you you're all right oh that's perfect so you just did what was best for your
17:32setup and that's how all food works right there's no rules rules what do we want we want the boys to
17:36eat everything you cook yeah add the beef resting juices to round out the sauce say I probably would
17:42have just thrown that juice out you you would you you don't mean that yeah well I wouldn't have known
17:50what to do with it the sauce goes into the freshly made salad see that I mean come on now life is good
17:57in this house right now right it's bad to get better plate it up and add parsley and a little lemon zest for
18:03a final zing that was easy to be fair wasn't overly hard do you think you can do that again yeah
18:08absolutely time for the boys to review how do we feel it looks good okay they're ready to try it
18:15looks amazing serve it up before they change their mind how is it dad cooked this would you help him
18:24in the kitchen no why not well you could change the taste if you wanted to so that's something if you
18:30did help you could change the taste have you had the beef it's really good is it do you like the beef
18:36okay I could swap out the beef chicken and that sort of stuff absolutely I feel it'd be good in
18:42there really you know something with the base salad nailed any protein can be added and at four dollars
18:48per plate this beef version is an easy new family find do you want dad to make this again yeah
18:55definitely great I think we've nailed it sir perfect growing bodies need protein and increasingly we're
19:02turning to giant plastic pots of powder but is way the way to go Angela Beryl has answers most New
19:10Zealanders are meeting their protein requirements just from eating plain food without having to resort
19:15to these expensive protein powders you use these I do are you saying that this whole time I didn't need
19:22to have the protein powder and I would get everything I needed from there you sure would I'm trying to be
19:27on a caloric deficit so less in more out and I always thought that this had less calories is that
19:33true whether it's protein from your food or protein found in your protein powder it's the same amount of
19:39calories per gram and the benefit of having protein from your food is you're also going to get all these
19:45beneficial vitamins and minerals as well as the protein so if we've got teenage boys at home growing do
19:52they need this we do need protein to help our growth and development is a building block for many of our
19:57bodies cells and also it can help us to feel fuller for longer but we can meet our protein requirements
20:03from just plain food we could have something like a smoothie and either add in an extra yogurt to our
20:09milk smoothie or even some extra skim milk powder to bump up the protein content or we could have eggs
20:14on toast or baked beans on toast rather than resorting to these really expensive heavily processed protein
20:21powders well you've just saved me a ton of money good news thank you pricey proteins don't just come
20:28in powder form dad's special weekend treat is smoked salmon but at $14 for a tiny packet that's a giant
20:35splurge yo dad salmon bagels thanks but will he notice there's something fishy with our replacement so I'm
20:44I'm guessing this is the salmon that has been potentially swapped out there's a lot more oil
20:49in the salmon that I buy I think so to me this is absolutely different it could be cheaper it could
20:55be yes salmon is quite expensive I know good it's a bit salty for me would you eat it again probably I
21:10could potentially get used to it because I mean it's not it's not unpleasant it's just salty so
21:16would you buy it again and if it's cheaper probably yes actually and this is my you know my Saturday
21:22morning breakfast while you guys are in bed so for me this is quite important but yeah I think I could
21:29get used to it it may have a bit more salt but this budget option has half the fat and it's half the
21:35price time to see if the delegates can stack up some snack savings this brand conscious family love
21:42their Pringles but is it the taste or the packaging that's captured their hearts time for another food
21:47swap test let's try um I call some stack potato chips in the first place so they taste the same to
22:00me no these are saltier than the other ones and they feel lighter okay did you buy them if they
22:05were cheaper than what we've currently paid for them yeah I'd still eat them would you that's good
22:10but I don't know whether they're the same or different I think that's probably more about the
22:14packaging right now if Jared and family can part with their precious but pricey usual brand they'll
22:21save a dollar seventy-two a can and it looks like everyone's on board will there be tears as emotions
22:30run high in the kitchen why don't you start doing something I've done all of that and you've just
22:35done that dad's keen Jordan and Kyan learn some kitchen skills so Mike's created an easy dish to
22:44bring the boys together go start what are we starting on the recipe the Mike's quick and awesome prawn fitted
22:52you don't need to slam everything down while Jordan attacks the onion she makes such a mess come on
23:04it's cooking Kyan measures out the prawns rice flour chickpea flour baking soda and papariki with the
23:13uh papariki and all the other dry ingredients ready to go just waiting on that onion Jordan
23:19what's next waiting for you why don't you start doing something else then I've done all of that and
23:29you've just done that hang in there boys not much more to do my eyes are sore go wash your hands and
23:39stick your hands in your eyes yeah maybe that was a bad idea add water to the dry ingredients and stir to form a batter I can't do this you need to cut the onions I can't do it either
23:56yeah yeah and then once that onions been massacred add it to the mixture then throw in the prawns all of them read the recipe next it's time to get these fritters cooking
24:13how are you feeling about trying prawns for the first time like 50% doesn't mean anything to me add blobs of mixture to a hot pan do you reckon it's gonna taste better than it actually looks right now mmm I'm not so sure cook until golden brown
24:31first ever combined attempt at cooking complete now it's time to taste
24:38for me they're divine really really good so far so good and at 337 a portion they make a cheap and healthy meal
24:48what do you think I don't like it don't like them don't like them no that's okay mmm they're really nice bit of a mixed result there but will aioli taste test better
25:00it does look different but does it taste any better it's definitely different it tastes sweeter to me mmm there's a little hint of garlic but not as much as the other one
25:11mmm yeah even if it is different do they still like it I like the sweetness but I think I'd stick to the other one
25:18yeah I don't I wouldn't stop this one now mmm this tastes very mayonnaise-y to me so I don't think I would either actually
25:27they're right it is a swap and if they had been open to changing they'll save nearly two dollars per 100 grams
25:33dad's Frenchie fave brie is the next food test we've changed Jared's brie for a cheaper brand or have one
25:40so Geordie what do you reckon I think it's been changed because originally because we brought a wet shape to start off with
25:47yeah it's round so the shape is completely different so yeah I'm gonna go with that it is gonna be different
25:53cracking detective work but will a cheese by any other shape taste as satisfyingly cheesy
26:00what do you reckon it's quite nice mmm in what way I quite like it
26:08it's nice and smooth hmm it's really easy to eat it's not too strong it's really nice isn't it
26:15another piece we could add this to our cheese repertoire couldn't we at one dollar cheaper per
26:23hundred grams the new breeze sounds like an easy way to save some money with countless cheese options
26:30crowding the supermarket buying the best brie can be a bit baffling we've enlisted the help of Auckland's
26:37rainbow choir gals but today it's less glee and more brie club which suits them just fine
26:44I would have to say that I'm an absolute brieholic I love the double creamy texture I particularly like a good strong rind
26:56and I love the aftertaste once I get started on it I can't stop good to hear because there are five breeze for our singers to test today
27:04there's a supermarket owned brand here's Jared's favorite poohoi brie a mid-range choice from Ornel is next bestseller mainland special reserve is the fourth one out and then finally our most expensive brie on cracker duty boot on door they're all warmed up so time to find out which of these brands will be a cracker and which one a slacker
27:27pass me one please first is boot on door the most expensive of our breeze but what is the difference between
27:34brie and camembert I think it's the way they're spelt
27:36I find this one just a little bit tasteless actually this is a really okay cheese yeah that you can have with friends and some wine and crackers but it's not going to impress
27:48anybody no one's gonna be like anyone say yeah what's that cheese it didn't hit me in the face with flavor a nice texture general consensus I'd agree
27:57bit bland bit boring yeah nice rind the supermarket own brand is next this one even before you taste it is a little softest this one is immediately better than the last one that flavor is great
28:11mmm very lovely it is salty but I like it so do I next up the poohoi brie kind of reminds me of my school eraser really yeah yeah this is this is like this isn't even like brie sort of grows in your mouth though I'm quite enjoying it
28:27it's a grower not a shower I reckon that would go with either savory or sweet I think or it could just go in the bin
28:35let's see if the mainland special reserve can hit the right note oh that's nice don't you think it
28:43goes down nicely texture but in the last one I'd buy this again yeah I think I would too I'm a tough
28:50critic I don't not very impressed by this cheese it's better than the last one but it's not as good as the
28:55second one it makes the first one taste better and finally the Ornells thank you do you reckon cheese is
29:04all right for the vocal cords probably not make you sing off key how's that butter it is buttery I
29:11taste cardboard cardboard yeah you guys are weird mind you if you'd had enough wine anything to do
29:17wouldn't it mmm too true but which brand deserves a standing ovation budget brands rule the roost with
29:25countdown top of the list and mainland special reserve in second place the most expensive cheese came in
29:31fourth and in last place was Jared's fave the Puhoy Brie but not everyone is surprised to hear the
29:37supermarket own can hold its own amongst your posh cheeses I think the supermarkets are getting a
29:42little more savvy now and there's more of us eat cheeses that are outside of cheddar and
29:47Cheersdale I think they've kept up with the trend next a healthy pie you'll definitely want to try miss it miss out
29:55I think the chickens and to the ring you should watch out in scenic titarangi the delegates have
30:05been coming to terms with brand free dining and it's time for another food swap but without the
30:10label will cry and spot of his baked beans have been swapped out they taste the same do you think
30:16yeah this is quite hard isn't it I think the baked beans taste I think they taste a little less salty
30:22certainly not salty they're not sweet at all it's just right don't they Goldilocks so I'm guessing
30:32because you eat the most baked beans in this house well you've already eaten yours so you're probably
30:35guessing that they're probably no different so what do you reckon they taste exactly the same exactly the
30:40same if they are different we can swap them out easily yeah yeah okay great I'm happy with that
30:45they are different and if they swap the delegates will be saving a whopping $2.50 a can but it's
30:51not all about the savings Ganesh also wants to kick out the convenience food get the family eating
30:57healthy and get the boys cooking so for this father-son challenge he's prepared a vegan curry in a hurry
31:03we give it a go mm-hmm okay let's go crush the cardamom pods then prep the veggies coriander onion
31:14cauliflower mushroom and pumpkin eat one tablespoon of oil in a pot right so we need to put the mustard
31:20seeds the cloves and the cardamom for 20 seconds do I tip as well yep so this is oh they are they're
31:27like flying all over the place these little mustard seed things are you a good idea we use the recipe
31:32protection okay so we need to reduce the heat if I don't get stabbed in the eye add onions and
31:40garlic I don't think this is too hard actually so far so far in goes the water coconut milk and curry
31:47powder I guess we'll have to just taste it to see how strong it's gonna be right because we don't want
31:53it pumpkin and next followed by cauliflower add chickpea mushroom frozen veggies then a quick game of
32:02twister yep get in there taste it no wait till the final well you need to taste it to see what it's
32:13gonna taste like at the end to see if there's anything else we need to add is there anything
32:18else you need to add do you think let's test this properly oh you're obviously getting into it it's
32:25it's good I think we could have a little less spice next time oh you reckon it's good what is it too
32:32hot yeah it's a bit too spicy a bit too spicy for me too is this something that we need again do you
32:38think we would add this to our every week recipe kind of stuff would we do this again we just lessen
32:44the hotness altering the spiciness is an easy fix and at 2.57 per serving it's a cheap and healthy way
32:51to keep this family fed these boys may be good with the veggies but fruit has been a challenge
32:57one easy solution until recently seemed to be a glass of juice but let's get a second opinion from
33:04our dietitian Angela Beryl the reason why orange juice has gone out of fashion as the World Health
33:09Organization now categorizes fruit juice and the same category as sugar honey and other forms of free
33:16sugar and in one glass of orange juice it's roughly about 75% of our daily allowance of sugar wow that's
33:25no fun not a whole lot of fun so we're much better actually looking to things like our whole food
33:30sources of fruits and vegetables rather than turning to a juice and a juice you might find about the
33:35equivalent of six to eight oranges and we're unlikely to sit down and eat that many in one sitting you're
33:42saying there's the equivalent of six to eight oranges in that glass round about six and that
33:46size there but for some of those things like an apple that doesn't have much juice in it just
33:51probably even more and we're not getting those benefits of the fiber in there which are actually
33:54going to help to fill us up that's a good point isn't it because you don't get the pulp you don't
33:58get the fire but you don't get all the other nutrients just that juice and that sugar exactly so
34:03where we can we want to be turning to looking lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and if we can't get
34:08fresh and in season when things are going to be cheaper we can also include things like our frozen
34:13vegetables and fruit and canned as well with the canned we want to look at the ones that are canned
34:17and juice as opposed to syrup can I ditch the veggies and just have fruit no we actually need to
34:23include a variety of fruit and vegetables within the diet including an array of different colors we
34:29talk about eating a rainbow of colors because each color provides a different range of nutrients
34:35we need to aim to have at least five serves of fruit and vegetables each day for our health that
34:41includes at least two serves of fruit and at least three serves of vegetables consider yourself told
34:48the delegates hometown is known for its free roaming chickens which may well have inspired Mike's next dish a
34:56plus-size family pastry one thing about little party pies is yes they are cheap and yes they are convenient
35:03but full of salt and they have a heap of pastry all around them and not much filling yeah so what
35:09we're going to do is we're going to make a jumbo pie yeah that we can then cut up serve to your boys
35:15and yourself and then what's left over goes into the fridge take that to school the next day it all
35:20starts with the sauce making a room making a bechamel yeah this is the base for so many things that we
35:27make all right yeah as a chef this is probably the first thing that we learn how to make wow when we're like this
35:32high and we're looking up at the tutors more terrified oh i hope i don't burn it a roux is slowly cooked using butter
35:38and flour add milk slowly and you've made a bechamel the veggie part of the filling is next
35:47first chop the leeks and saute in garlic but not too long i want to keep the flavor right and i want to
35:53keep the color and my mother bless her she would cook leeks until they were brown bless her heaps of
36:03veggies we're going to get heaps of veggies into these boys then add chicken do you think anyone
36:08ever goes up to the village and just grabs a little chick and puts it on at six o'clock and
36:12eat it from that night let's hope not and then we combine it all together lovely i haven't added any
36:20salt up until this stage right okay then i've got some bees great add those guys in filling complete
36:27now for the pastry line the dish no need to be too neat kind of looks like a bit of a jigsaw puzzle yeah
36:36once your pie mix is actually in no one knows today no one knows add the lid this pie is a good old
36:45chicken pie great then into the oven throw together a quick pesto traditionally you would use pine nuts
36:52yeah but they're really expensive yeah and i find walnuts give you just as much flavor
36:57and they're half the price crush the walnuts and mix them with basil parmesan and oil and you've got a
37:03cheap and healthy meal at just three dollars 28 per serve time to see what the group thinks look at
37:11that they'll keep you going for the rest of the day what do you think of it it's really good would you
37:16eat that yeah compared to the supermarket pies this is way better and the thing is boys you could put
37:22heaps of veggies into this if you want to and fruit on the side yeah
37:25yeah mike's pie's been a big old pastry triumph i think the chickens and uh to the ring you should
37:34uh watch out our eat well for less experiment with the delegates is nearly over they've done pretty
37:42well with the challenge but it's verdict time now and michael and ganesh have some revelations
37:49hi come in thank you thank you are we well i am you i'm great great come in delegate family yes how
37:57was our week um it's been great for me so i've learned a whole lot of new stuff boys yeah do you
38:04feel good about that up and down with the food changes and looking in the cupboards but all right
38:09all over it was a good week yeah it was pretty good yeah how did we get on with our recipes most
38:16of the recipes are good but i didn't like the prawn fritters no why it was the taste it was of the
38:23prawns of the actual thing yeah but at least you tried it absolutely and what about working together
38:30in the kitchen how did that work it didn't go so smoothly but we survived but it's good though it's
38:36good this is your first experiment in the kitchen together so we might have to i might have to pre
38:40cut everything and just remove all the knives for the first few rounds but apart from that i think
38:44it'll be okay i i think it's great that the boys are in there cooking i think it's fantastic thing so
38:49hopefully the start of something yeah absolutely okay so your initial spend was 267 dollars yes which
38:56we explained at the time is actually below the national average for a family of your size yeah we will spend
39:01that money that you saved yeah and put it into fruit yeah absolutely so as we found out at your
39:07checkout you love your brands all right so let's see how you went with the swaps okay yep here we go
39:14first up it's jared's expensive treat food smoked salmon if to me this is absolutely different it could be
39:22cheaper it could be lovely and tasty yeah but very premium and very expensive yes to all of those things
39:30so how did you get on with the swap taste wise it was fine in the end i got used to it so i it's
39:36something i could absolutely get used to if it was swapped out we did actually swap it out
39:44and we swapped it to something that was exactly the same price okay but instead of 100 grams right you
39:51got some out 200 grams great and it would save you a wow a packet so that's seven dollars a week that's
39:57365 a year yeah that's a lot of money saved for clearly bigger salmon piece so your premium brand
40:04yeah actually had double the fat of this bread wow so not only is it a cost saving it's a health
40:10saver brilliant okay fantastic keep up yeah absolutely aioli's next and this family eats a lot of it
40:17did we like the flavor um it was a bit sweet i think and not more as garlic it was more like on the mayo
40:24side yeah for me well you've hit the nail on the head because this is what you had so we made it
40:30from scratch with these fresh ingredients you've had this thing in a jar from the supermarket high in
40:36salt high it's trained your taste buds to go that's what i like how easy is it to make so easy if you
40:41want more garlicky flavor add more garlic for that saving yeah that's pretty good because we go through
40:48one of those a week for that saving it's a no-brainer so yeah we'll keep that it's a swap yeah yeah
40:53cayenne's the baked beans expert in the house let's ask the expert how did the baked beans go
40:58they tasted exactly the same that's such good did we swap it who knows we're about to find out
41:07what's in here a supermarket oh there you go want more good news there's a whole heck of a saving
41:15there's a whole heck of a saving that's huge it's got half the salt and half the sugar wow
41:23couldn't even taste the difference could you fantastic so it's a swap yes yeah absolutely awesome
41:28we're doing well so far stacked potato chips next these are saltier than the other ones and they feel
41:34lighter what do we think of your brand that you tried for me they were nicer than the ones we had
41:38before boys yeah i would swap if it's cheaper yeah if it's cheaper then sure wow fantastic let's have
41:46a look did we swap them yes we did wow supermarket own as well if you buy these wow it's slowly just
41:54adding up isn't it wow exactly that this will be the real test jared's much-loved chocolate ice creams
42:02i probably wouldn't because i like the chocolate in the middle as well and you love them yeah i love them
42:07yeah and you wouldn't change them these guys would i would not okay so this is kind of what if it's
42:14a saving yeah i would rather give up something else to be fair wow i don't think i've seen him so firm
42:21on something do we have a look at them yeah what did we do yes we did in fact swap them yes i know
42:28supermarket owned brand yeah i feel there's there's two to one here there is two to one there is absolutely
42:35and they've started to get quite close to you in the last 10 seconds i've noticed boys if there's
42:40a saving in this do you think you could convince dad yes yeah it's a small saving but it is a saving
42:47dollar 69. okay uh yeah i don't know i'm still no okay these are on the fence yeah we're not doing
42:54too badly under the fence on the road you know you started with 267 yep and by making all these different
43:02changes we've brought that down to 235 wow that's huge just by swapping out a few brains yeah in a
43:10weekly amount that seems like quite a bit but when you put into a annual amount that's 1667
43:16that's a lot especially for us yeah absolutely simple changes yeah and so what we're saying is
43:21take that difference and let's get better healthier food into your family yeah you guys aren't too far off
43:26we'll just have to make these little changes yeah so that you can do better for yourselves and of
43:32course get in that fruit yeah this made me keen to like try different foods and different styles of
43:40foods as well yeah you give them a go if you don't like them at least you've tried them well that was
43:46good that was great hey i really enjoyed it i think they're going to be doing some good cooking there
43:50some chickens up there this is a big big hill man i know jeepers it's hard work huh
43:56that's it you know i hear i hear if you walk backwards it's easier we're getting old now we're
44:03just spring chicken get up chickens look at that one get some lunges going oh god this is really i feel
44:11the blood do you feel the blood do you feel the blood it's burning
