Warner Bros. has tapped 'The Hangover' filmmaker Todd Phillips to co-write and possibly direct an origin movie of the classic Batman villain The Joker.
Transcript
00:00Na-na-na-na-na-na-na, Bat the Joker.
00:02Yup, we all knew it would happen eventually,
00:04and now it's looking like a Joker movie may actually be getting made.
00:08News broke Tuesday that The Hangover's Todd Phillips
00:10is working on a big-screen origin project for the Batman villain.
00:15The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Phillips will co-write the script with Scott Silver
00:19and possibly direct an origin movie of the classic Batman villain.
00:23The Hollywood Reporter's Graham McMillan says that, on one hand,
00:26this is in fact a surprising development.
00:28Why the surprise?
00:30Well, one reason is, the project will be part of a new DC Entertainment label
00:35unconnected to the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Cinematic Universe
00:39that's continuing to move forward.
00:41The still-developing label for Warner's DC Entertainment properties
00:44will include projects that could stand apart from the big, massive temples
00:48that are tied to each other in a shared universe way.
00:51Alright, let's be clear.
00:52The Joker is already part of the Suicide Squad movie franchise
00:55and is played by Jared Leto.
00:56The Joker movie in development, under the plan,
00:59would feature another actor and be made under another budget category.
01:03At this stage, the story is set in Gotham City in the early 1980s.
01:08McMillan writes,
01:09It's something that seems almost depressingly inevitable.
01:13Of course there's going to be a Joker movie, because there's always a Joker movie.
01:17The character has become inescapable, omnipresent when it comes to cinematic versions of DC characters.
01:24It's true.
01:24We've seen more versions of the Joker on the big screen than Wonder Woman,
01:27who's only been played by Gal Gadot, and even Superman himself.
01:31McMillan points out that,
01:32such overexposure is detrimental to the character's chaotic appeal.
01:37Which might be obvious to some,
01:38but there's arguably a signifier that character integrity is less of a priority
01:43than maximizing audience identification and profit potential when it comes to this new movie.
01:48That's not to say the film automatically won't be a good one,
01:51but McMillan writes that it just feels unnecessary and predictable.
01:55Two traits that hardly feel very Joker-esque.
01:58McMillan's not the only one expressing disappointment.
02:01Why so serious, Batman fans online?
02:04Soon after the news of a possible Phillips Joker movie broke Tuesday,
02:08Gotham's finest made sure their opinions were known on social media.
02:12Please don't make the Joker movie end origin story.
02:15He's not supposed to have an origin story.
02:18There's plenty of arguments for how a Joker movie could work,
02:21but in the end, it humanizes him, and that's not a Joker I want, to be honest.
02:25But wait, maybe there is a silver lining to all this.
02:28Hopefully this Joker prequel might finally clue us in on what happened to Batman's parents.
02:33And let's cap it off with an appropriate gif from our very own Ryan Parker.
02:37Nerds currently reacting to the news that The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips
02:41is tapped to co-write and possibly direct Joker film.
