00:01Wait till they get a load of me.
00:06It's been 31 years since Tim Burton's 1989 Batman hit theaters,
00:10so we're looking back at a behind-the-scenes featurette
00:12where Jack Nicholson revealed that he was very hands-on
00:15when it came to the Joker's look.
00:17The featurette revealed that Nicholson,
00:18who had final say over the Joker's makeup design,
00:20clashed with Burton when it came to the Joker's hair.
00:23You know, when you look at the drawings,
00:25his hair is not bright green.
00:27You almost see it as a lighting effect.
00:29The actor wanted a more subdued look,
00:31whereas Burton wanted it bright green,
00:33or Clarabelle, as Nicholson called it.
00:35And I said, oh, you know, Tim, look, you know,
00:37I don't agree with that.
00:38You don't want that level of clowning.
00:41In the end, it seemed that Nicholson got his way
00:43with a less campy version of the comic book villain.
00:46And we did the test on the wig,
00:48and immediately he saw too bright.
00:51Changed the wig.
00:53The actor was also interested in toying with an elongated chin,
00:56which the character in the comics had,
00:57but it turns out the makeup process was even more of a challenge
01:01due to his allergy.
01:02One of the ironies of my life is I'm allergic to spirit gum,
01:05you know, the basic unit of movie makeup.
