Todd Phillips will co-write and direct the project.

00:00Why so serious? Joaquin Phoenix is the top choice to play the Joker in the upcoming standalone movie.
00:05The Hangover director Todd Phillips will direct the film from a script he is co-writing with Scott Silver,
00:11the writer behind 8 Mile and The Fighter. While plot details are largely unknown,
00:15the standalone is supposed to be set in Gotham City in the early 1980s.
00:19The movie is being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment as part of a label of films
00:23that can exist outside of the continuity of its shared universe, which includes Wonder Woman,
00:28Justice League, Batman Vs. Superman, and Man of Steel. The character Joker is already a part of that existing universe,
00:34with Jared Leto starring as the classic villain in 2016's Suicide Squad.
00:38Now, this isn't the first time Phoenix has entertained the idea of doing a superhero movie.
00:43The three-time Oscar nominee was offered the role of DC villain Lex Luthor in Batman Vs. Superman.
00:48He was also in talks to play Doctor Strange for Marvel. Ultimately, he passed on both projects.
00:53So his participation in this Joker film isn't a sure thing.
00:57Back in September, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Warner Bros. was courting
01:01Leonardo DiCaprio for the Joker movie.
01:03As for Phoenix, he'll next be seen in Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot,
01:08based on the memoir of late cartoonist John Callahan.
01:11The film just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
01:14He's also set for the western The Sisters Brothers.
01:17So what do you think about the possibility of Joaquin Phoenix playing the Joker?
