Gretchen Carlson spoke at The Hollywood Reporter's Power 100 Women in Entertainment.
Transcript
00:00I'm Gretchen Carlson, the woman at the center of the Fox News sexual harassment scandal
00:05who took down Roger Ailes.
00:22That story is the subject of multiple new movies and TV shows this year.
00:28It's a little surreal being portrayed by such gifted actors as Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts,
00:34and soon Rami Malek.
00:36Well, maybe not, but he could probably do it, right?
00:40Thank you so much Matt and Lynn and everyone at The Hollywood Reporter for having me here
00:44today.
00:45It's an honor to be here at such an important gathering of powerful women and allies.
00:49And before I introduce this year's honoree for the Equity and Entertainment Award, I am
00:53here today to enlist your help and your support.
00:58Three years ago, I found the courage, somehow, to stand up to Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes
01:06and sue him.
01:08At that time, I felt completely alone.
01:12But since that time, many more women have found the courage to say, enough is enough.
01:17Tell their stories.
01:19And together, we started a cultural revolution.
01:25With the help of many in this room, a tidal wave of truth-telling, it washed away predatory
01:31men.
01:33When my case settled, I received a rare public apology from 21st Century Fox, which at the
01:38time was a huge win.
01:40But had I known what I know now, that my complaint would help ignite such a profound cultural shift,
01:48I would have also fought so hard to never sign that awful NDA.
01:54Non-disclosure agreements were originally designed to safeguard the sharing of corporate secrets.
01:59But they're not supposed to protect predatory behavior.
02:03My NDA means I am legally prohibited from discussing what really happened to me.
02:09It means I can't consult with filmmakers, writers, journalists, or anyone else telling my story,
02:16whether it's about the depiction of me, my family, or just the events themselves.
02:23That silence can feel suffocating.
02:27So there's this notion that people can't be hired after coming forward with these kinds
02:31of claims.
02:33But there are a lot of heroes among you and me today.
02:38And they're standing by me.
02:41And that is the way that it should be.
02:43Because no one should be penalized for having a voice.
02:48Because buying silence instead of stopping harassment is immoral and unjust.
02:56We have lost hundreds of thousands of talented women to harassment across every profession while
03:01predators continue climbing the professional ladder.
03:04And I'm going to make sure that that stops once and for all.
03:18So today, it's time to lift all of our voices.
03:22I want my voice back.
03:24And I want to protect yours.
03:27Which is why former Fox News contributor Julie Roginski is here today.
03:32It's why the two of us together are proud to announce the launch of our new organization,
03:38Lift Our Voices.
03:40It's time to end the harmful practice of mandatory NDAs, confidentiality provisions, and forced
03:45arbitration clauses that I've been working so hard to change on Capitol Hill.
03:51Our mission with Lift Our Voices is to get rid of the loopholes and silencing that holds
03:55women back and to allow women to speak truth to power without any fear of adverse consequences
04:02or retaliation, the most undersold part of this story.
04:07This is the next fight in the Me Too movement.
04:11So if you feel moved this morning, please join our mission.
04:15Please get out your phones and text LIFT to 797979.
04:22You will be the inaugural members of a movement to help us achieve our goal.
04:25And please share this site with your massive followers as well.
04:31One of my favorite quotes happens to be anonymous.
04:35One woman can make a difference, but together we rock the world.
04:42And I know together we will win this fight.
