00:00:00I put a spell on you and now you're mine. It's been 300 years right to the day. Now the witch is back and there's hell to pay.
00:00:22I put a spell on you and now you're mine.
00:00:35Hello, relationship. Happy Halloween. I put a spell on you and now you're gone.
00:00:47My whammy fell on you and it was strong. Your wretched little eyes have all been hurt because of all the witches working. I'm the worst. I put a spell on you and now you're mine.
00:01:06Watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out. I ain't lying. If you don't believe you better get superstitious. I'm my sister. She's vicious.
00:01:19I put a spell on you. A wicked spell. I put a spell on you. I say into pi, alpha, maybe up and down. I say into pi, alpha, maybe up and down.
00:01:36I ain't not no sin, I'm a Kori, Anna. I ain't not nine stars. I ain't not no sin, but down. I can't redeem my boo-ity in the middle of the city. I'm a SN Shaw.
00:01:41INCOME. INCOME. INCOME. FOR ME.
00:02:02guitar solo
00:02:32Oh, hello, good evening. Welcome. Welcome to The Little Ape Show on Halloween night. Let's hear it one more time from Niamh Kavanagh and all our friends at Spotlight who put a spell on us in the opening number. Let's hear it for them.
00:02:50CHEERING
00:02:51So flexible with those backflips. We have some great guests on the show tonight, folks. Would you believe it? We got the Pope on the show tonight. There's the Pope. Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:06Yeah. Straight from Hollywood, we have the Minions. The Minions are here. Yeah. Wow. Just flown in tonight. Spider-Man. Spider-Man is in the house.
00:03:20CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:03:25And Cousinette. Cousinette. There is Cousinette.
00:03:29CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:03:34Good luck with that one for the next hour and a half. There we go. All tonight on the show, we've got the scariest coaches on TV from Ireland's fittest family. We have Donahoe Callaghan and Davie Fitzgerald are here.
00:03:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:03:47We are going to be trick-or-treating with the internet sensations, the hot young guys, the young hot guys, and swapping Summer Bay for Dublin Bay, Irene from Home and Away, Lynne McGranger over here.
00:04:00CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:04:03And that's on all, we're going to be brewing up some Halloween bad medicine with Jon Bon Jobe in the house.
00:04:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:04:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:04:15But before that, my first guest tonight is one of Ireland's most loved broadcasters who's had a ringside seat to some of the biggest moments in recent Irish history and who asked the questions we all want the answers to.
00:04:29Tonight, though, she's here to answer them herself. Would you please welcome Miriam O'Callaghan!
00:04:34CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:04:37Yes, Miriam, welcome to the show. We have done this a few times. It's usually me sitting there, you asking the questions. How does it feel to be in the other chair tonight?
00:04:58It actually feels terrifying, Patrick. I know, cos I normally ask the questions, so now I'm quite terrified.
00:05:08Look, it's absolutely fine. We had another Miriam on the show a couple of weeks ago. As long as you're on your best behaviour.
00:05:15My mother is in the green room. She's 97. I won't be saying any bad words. OK, this is good. This is good news.
00:05:24APPLAUSE
00:05:26Now, we are chatting tonight about your new book. We could well, for the week that's in it, be chatting about you as the new president of Ireland, Miriam.
00:05:38I mean, when you see the whole cycle go through, were you ever tempted?
00:05:44Never, Patrick. And actually, it was lovely because the last presidential debate, we did it on primetime. And I did it with Sarah McInerney, my great colleague. And I loved doing that. But I was so happy I was asking the questions there. And I wasn't, you know, being questioned. No, not for me. But we've got a great new president. Isn't that great?
00:06:01And in that primetime debate, Catherine Connolly said it was great that there were four women in the studio herself and Heather and yourself and Sarah. I mean, is that a moment for you as well?
00:06:15I think we both. And when it was over, myself and Sarah actually had a hug and someone captured it just privately on one of our phones on primetime. I think it was a moment, Patrick.
00:06:24Patrick, I mean, look, I'm a mother of four girls and four boys, and I love my boys as much as my girls. But I do think the world has come a long way in to have four women doing that debate. I thought, yeah, go girls.
00:06:37I, whenever I see you do your job, you always seem to be the most confident person, always in charge, always on point. And I didn't realise until reading this book that the teenage Miriam
00:06:53was a bit shy. Yeah, I know. I famously, my dad was from Kerry. Yeah, beautiful Kerry. And he came from a small farm in Currow.
00:07:03And we used to go when we were teenagers to the local disco down there when we go on holiday to the Glen Eagle, actually. And all my sisters would go in and dance all night.
00:07:12And when I arrived there, Patrick, I used to go into the toilet, lock it, stay in a cubicle, read a book and stay there for most of the night.
00:07:20And I was also very, very thin when I was young. And I think possibly for anyone who's ever had any kind of an eating disorder.
00:07:28Yeah, I look very thin. And I think it's just sometimes a lot of young women and girls maybe go through things when they're young.
00:07:38And it's probably a lack of confidence. And but I grew out. But I remember going to London, I went to university when I was 16.
00:07:46My mother in the green room's way of child minding, she was a teacher, was to throw us all into national school when we were three and a half.
00:07:52So I ended up kind of going to university really young. But I remember going to London then with a friend of mine, Gerardine Connolly.
00:07:58And she came back looking great and I came back looking very ill. But my parents were great. They were very sound.
00:08:04He's a civil servant. She's a teacher. They didn't panic. And they just sent me to the GP and I got out of it. And I never looked back.
00:08:11You know, you're talking there about your mum. And yeah.
00:08:18They're such a nice audience. Look, I mean, they are. And they love you. And so they should.
00:08:23I mean, this book is called Life, Work and Everything. But the one thing that kind of runs through it for me is family.
00:08:29Family is at the heart of it. And, you know, I know you were, you know, you're talking about your mum and dad there.
00:08:37I want to talk about your sister, Anne. Yeah.
00:08:42Because I know that you write beautifully about this in the book. And you say she was the crown jewel.
00:08:49She was the crown jewel. And yeah. And I know, Patrick, you lost your mother this year, Mary.
00:08:54So I'm conscious of that. And you lost your father when you were only 16.
00:08:58But basically, there were five of us in the family. And I was second. And I'm really close to all my siblings.
00:09:04But Anne and I were born a year apart. And there we are there. And that's my daughter, Clara, and her daughter, Lizzie.
00:09:11And this is one of your favourite pics, isn't it?
00:09:13Yeah. And to be fair to my ex-husband, he took that. Tom McGurk. And I kept giving out to him for taking and saying,
00:09:18We look wrecked. Stop taking pictures of us. And I'm so grateful he took that picture, because it's my favourite photograph.
00:09:24Anyway, to cut a long story short, I always say, Patrick, it's my BC and my AD.
00:09:29One day, she was sitting on the step of my house around the time we were holding our babies.
00:09:34And she said she didn't feel well. You know, the way we'd all say, maybe hangover or probably normally we'd been out the night before.
00:09:40But anyway, five months later, she died of stomach cancer and she was only 33.
00:09:46And I remember being, not being able to comprehend how this could happen in the world.
00:09:52And I remember the day before she died. I was in St. Vincent's Hospital down the road.
00:09:57The most amazing hospital. They were brilliant, the nurses and the doctors to her.
00:10:01And I was in the lift with my mum and dad. And my dad was a man of few words.
00:10:04He was a caring man. And he never really showed his emotions.
00:10:07And he started to cry and he just said, Miriam, we're losing the jewel in our crown, we're losing the jewel in our crown.
00:10:13And I was so angry, Patrick, because I thought, you know, these were country people who'd done their best for their children.
00:10:19They sent us to free schools, but believed in education. They never really went out.
00:10:24Maybe the civil service dining club twice a year.
00:10:27And I was so angry that the world had come along and kicked them in the face and robbed them of the jewel in their crown.
00:10:35And robbed yous all.
00:10:36Yeah, I was distraught. It's the only thing in life I'm angry about.
00:10:40And I'm still angry about it.
00:10:42And I realise so many other people, not just in this audience probably watching, have lost people.
00:10:47But she was only 33. She had two little girls, a two and a four year old, a devoted husband.
00:10:53And I just couldn't believe, I realised in that moment, life is just unfair.
00:10:58It's really unfair.
00:10:59And then, yeah, then two months after that, you buried your dad.
00:11:11I know.
00:11:12And, you know, after your dad died, that really was a moment, wasn't it for you in terms of changing your life?
00:11:23Yeah, I kind of realised that this was it, Patrick, and that people die.
00:11:28And you can be the best person in the world.
00:11:31But, you know, this is it.
00:11:33And if you don't live your life to the full and take some charge of your own happiness, then maybe what's life about?
00:11:41So I did change. And my dad died eight weeks after, and he was going out to get her little mask card printed, you know, her memory card.
00:11:50And he got a stroke and he died a few weeks later.
00:11:52And I remember my brother Jim phoning me.
00:11:54I was down in the West for a few days after Anne died, saying, Miriam, you have to come back up.
00:11:59Daddy's had a stroke and he died.
00:12:01And we're sitting around the hospital bed again.
00:12:03So my life changed.
00:12:04And then my marriage broke up.
00:12:06So I always say 1995 was my anus horribilis.
00:12:10You say that was a turning point.
00:12:14You know, in life, you have to grab the chances you have.
00:12:18And you did.
00:12:20Yeah.
00:12:21You know, your second time around.
00:12:23Yeah.
00:12:24You found love with Steve.
00:12:26A Belfast man.
00:12:27A Belfast man.
00:12:28That's where we look there.
00:12:30This is you guys.
00:12:31Oh, yeah.
00:12:32That's you on your wedding day there.
00:12:34Yeah.
00:12:35And I mean, that was a moment then where you took charge of your life and just ran with the ball.
00:12:46I did really run with the ball.
00:12:48Yeah.
00:12:49And I worked with Steve in a program called BBC Newsnight.
00:12:52I worked over in the UK before I came to Ireland.
00:12:55And I remember after Anne died, I had decided, you know, not to work for Newsnight as much.
00:13:01Deirdre Young, a wonderful woman in here, had recruited me back to Ireland.
00:13:04I was delighted to come back, send my two little girls, I had two at the time, to a national school.
00:13:09And then I had twins.
00:13:11And, yeah, and this lovely deputy editor of Newsnight phoned me up called Karen O'Connor.
00:13:15And she says, Miriam, would you ever come back?
00:13:17You know, you've been grieving a long time now.
00:13:18This was June 95.
00:13:19She says, I have a lovely new Belfast producer working on Newsnight.
00:13:23And I think you'll get on great with them.
00:13:24And I thought, oh, God.
00:13:25And then she says, his name is Steve Carson.
00:13:28I thought, I was thinking, I don't know.
00:13:30I was thinking, how will we get on?
00:13:32And we made a film about the Irish famine, the 150th anniversary.
00:13:36And we met in the museum in Strokes Town, the family museum where all love stories begin.
00:13:41And he walked in and I just thought, oh, he looked really kind.
00:13:46And, yeah, a year later we got together.
00:13:49But I wasn't looking for a relationship because I'd been with Tom, my first husband, since I was 19.
00:13:53So I was going to enjoy my freedom for a little while, just a little while.
00:13:56But, yeah, the following year we got together.
00:14:00You know, one of the things about doing your job is that the story can always just overtake life, can't it?
00:14:07Yeah.
00:14:08You can never, you can never decide when you're going to get that call.
00:14:11Yeah.
00:14:12What do you mean in terms?
00:14:13Oh, like.
00:14:14In terms of, in terms of, you know, this, this stuff in the book here, you know.
00:14:17Yeah.
00:14:18You're writing about the christening in the book.
00:14:19Yeah.
00:14:20Do you know why that's so interesting?
00:14:21Because I didn't write my book for years.
00:14:23To be fair to Penguin Ireland, they gave me a contract 20 years ago.
00:14:27Oh, wow.
00:14:28I didn't sign it.
00:14:29I know.
00:14:30It took a while.
00:14:31I'm busy.
00:14:32And they never gave up on me.
00:14:35Patricia Deevy in particular, my editor, never gave up on me.
00:14:38And she said, look, you could just write it about work.
00:14:41But when I sat down to write it about work, I realised that would just be a lie.
00:14:46And I asked people every day to open up to me like you do in interviews.
00:14:50And I thought, I have to be honest about my life.
00:14:52And when I went to write it, the opening it is, I remembered christening my baby son, Jack,
00:14:57on the 13th of August, 1998, the day of the Omar bomb.
00:15:02And we were all in the house and we were having a great time.
00:15:05And I noticed more than usual what was going on because I was pregnant with my son, Daniel.
00:15:10And suddenly everyone in the room was on their pagers.
00:15:12It was before mobile phones really were in great use.
00:15:15And in about half an hour, Patrick, that party was empty of all the journalists because the Omar bomb had gone off.
00:15:21And that was the worst thing that had ever happened.
00:15:24So I remember Noel Curran, my brilliant editor at the time, came up to me in my kitchen and he said,
00:15:30Miriam, how would you feel?
00:15:31It was a Saturday about going on air.
00:15:33We need to present a special prime time about the Omar bomb because so many people have died.
00:15:38I said, of course.
00:15:39So I left that christening and I went into work.
00:15:42And there's no good reason, Patrick, to ever leave your baby son's christening except that.
00:15:47And I remember walking into the studio here and I'm conscious that there's so many people,
00:15:50all the guys around the cameras, Robbie there, who I love.
00:15:53And we'd all just celebrated the Good Friday Agreement a few months before.
00:15:57And I came in and just before I went in there, someone said in my ear,
00:16:00Oh, a mother who's pregnant with twins has died and her twins had died.
00:16:04And I was thinking of my twins back at home dancing in their bouncing castle to the Spice Girls.
00:16:10So I realised in that moment I had to write about everything in my life or it would not be true.
00:16:15You write beautifully about it.
00:16:20Thanks.
00:16:21You know, whenever you cover stuff like that, and you know, you talk a lot about the north from Bobby Sands through to John Hume.
00:16:30What was that moment like covering the Good Friday Agreement?
00:16:34It was so emotional.
00:16:37I mean, look, you lost your father during the Troubles.
00:16:39And I think it's lovely.
00:16:40My youngest boy is now only 19.
00:16:42He has no memory of what went on up there, which is brilliant, isn't it?
00:16:46I think it's brilliant that that generation has turned the page.
00:16:49Unbelievable.
00:16:50But on the day of the Good Friday Agreement, I covered a lot of the Troubles, Patrick, all through the 90s mainly.
00:16:56And you'd go and I always found, I don't know if you found this, like every house you went into, it was often a small house on both sides.
00:17:03And you'd have the coffin in the corner of the small living room.
00:17:06And I used to think this is just so tragic.
00:17:09And the one person I believe, there were many people involved, but my hero is John Hume.
00:17:13Well, we know that.
00:17:14And I campaigned, yeah.
00:17:15We knew that from when you championed him.
00:17:20Yeah.
00:17:21Well, I love him.
00:17:24And, you know, there's a beautiful serendipitous thing.
00:17:27A couple of years ago, I'm always distracted when I come home from primetime.
00:17:30I'll always have one glass of red wine, two slices of toast and cheese.
00:17:34And then my youngest boy was there about five years ago.
00:17:37And he was in the kitchen and he had five friends and they were in school.
00:17:40And he said, Mum, this boy says, you know, his grandparents.
00:17:43And I was kind of, yeah.
00:17:44Whatever.
00:17:45Whatever.
00:17:46And I said, oh, what's your grandparents' name?
00:17:48And he said, John and Pat Hume.
00:17:50And I turned around and I said, you are John and Pat Humes, just randomly.
00:17:54He ended up in school in Dublin.
00:17:56Brilliant.
00:17:57He's John Hume Jr's son.
00:17:58And I looked at him, I said, you're beautiful like your grandfather.
00:18:01You know your father brought peace to Ireland.
00:18:03So, Ollie Hume.
00:18:04Hi.
00:18:05One of the many things that I love about you is that people just, you have this ability
00:18:18to ask them a question.
00:18:19And I know this myself.
00:18:21They just open up and tell you the truth.
00:18:23Like, what was the moment like whenever Leo Varadka decided that he wanted to come
00:18:27and share something with you and share something with the rest of the country?
00:18:32It was great because I act like I'm nice.
00:18:34I'm incredibly competitive.
00:18:36I know, you love the story.
00:18:37So it was like a real exclusive for me to get it.
00:18:39But I thank the nuns in the Siena Monastery in Drogheda.
00:18:42Because I've been up there doing my radio show for Christmas Day in 2014.
00:18:46And I was driving back down.
00:18:48And when I left, the nuns said, Miriam, would you like us to pray for you?
00:18:50And I said, yes, please.
00:18:52I always love people to pray for me and my family.
00:18:54And when we were driving down, Alan Torney, my radio producer, was in the car with me.
00:18:58And he took a call.
00:18:59And he said, Miriam, that was Nick Miller, Leo Varadka's guy kind of.
00:19:03He wants to do a personal interview.
00:19:04I was thinking, he was the Minister for the Health at the time.
00:19:07And I thought, I'm not doing a soft soap interview with the Minister for Health.
00:19:11And then Alan said, you know, there's a rumour, Miriam, that Leo Varadka is gay.
00:19:15And that doesn't sound much today.
00:19:17But 10 years ago, that was a massive story.
00:19:20So it was arranged he'd come on a couple of weeks later.
00:19:23But Alan and Nick were incredibly polite.
00:19:26So no one ever discussed what he was coming on about.
00:19:28There was a suspicion he was coming on to say it.
00:19:30But I was doing prime time the Thursday night before.
00:19:33And I was doing an interview about waiting this and the health service.
00:19:36And I thought, I need to know what's happening.
00:19:38So I had 30 seconds.
00:19:40My poor floor manager nearly had a heart attack.
00:19:42I ran across as I finished my interview with him to get him as he walked out the studio door.
00:19:46And I said, Minister, are you coming on my radio show on Sunday to say you're a gay man?
00:19:51He said, I am, Miriam.
00:19:52I said, excellent.
00:19:57This is how you get the job done.
00:20:00Yeah.
00:20:01But what was that interview like?
00:20:02What was that moment like?
00:20:03It was like all moments.
00:20:05It was chaotic.
00:20:06So like we go live at 10 in the morning on a Sunday.
00:20:09And at about, there he is.
00:20:11Yeah.
00:20:12At about, I'd say, four minutes to 10, he wasn't even in the studio.
00:20:15And even I was panicking.
00:20:17I thought, where is he?
00:20:19So he came in and we all sat down.
00:20:21And then three men, my producer, Nick and Leo, with about four minutes to go, typical men, said,
00:20:27how are we going to do this?
00:20:28And I thought, oh, my God, we're going live to the nation with quite a big story.
00:20:32So I said, it's your birthday, Leo, isn't he?
00:20:34He said, yeah, it is.
00:20:35I said, OK, I'm going to say to you after about 12 minutes of wittering on about something,
00:20:38you're 36 today.
00:20:40It's your birthday.
00:20:41How come you've never settled down?
00:20:43I said, then you can say it.
00:20:45Sure enough, we got 12 minutes in.
00:20:47And I said, Minister, Leo Varker, it's your birthday today.
00:20:50You're 36.
00:20:51Why have you never settled down?
00:20:53He gave me a big, long, rambling answer for about three minutes and didn't say he was gay.
00:20:58So I looked through the glass with the radio.
00:21:00Everyone had their hands on their head because he wants to do it.
00:21:03But you know, that scary moment, I wasn't going to out him because I thought maybe he's changed his mind.
00:21:07So I thought, you know, we have to think live.
00:21:10I thought, oh, my God, what am I going to ask him?
00:21:11And I just said, well, if you ever did have a relationship, what kind of a relationship would you like?
00:21:16And he said, well, I think, Miriam, most people know I'm a gay man.
00:21:20And everyone around Ireland went, did he just say he's gay?
00:21:23And it was great.
00:21:24I was delighted for him.
00:21:25And, of course, that went full circle at Dublin Castle with the marriage referendum.
00:21:34Yeah, that was a beautiful day.
00:21:36I'm always conscious as well, though, you know, you try to be fair, Patrick, that a lot of people didn't vote for marriage equality, but most people did.
00:21:43There I am.
00:21:44Yeah, actually, they both proposed to each other, actually, Catherine Sapone and Anne Gilligan.
00:21:49It was just a magnificent day because it was full of people like older men who'd been couples for years and older women holding hands and crying, feeling they'd been really accepted.
00:21:59So it was a very emotional day.
00:22:01I feel very lucky to be there.
00:22:03They're so nice.
00:22:05They're such a nice...
00:22:08I love this audience.
00:22:10They love you.
00:22:12They love you.
00:22:14One of the amazing things tonight is that all eight of your kids are here.
00:22:21I was chatting to your mum.
00:22:23I know.
00:22:24And, yeah, the bat signal went up and they're all here.
00:22:28And your mum's in the green room.
00:22:29I was chatting to her and Steve's here as well.
00:22:32And, you know, there they all are.
00:22:34Look, that's the guy there.
00:22:35Yeah, they just, yeah.
00:22:36How cool is that?
00:22:37Yeah, that's them all there a few minutes ago.
00:22:43You know, on a night like this and, you know, you're telling your story in this book, who's prouder?
00:22:50You of them or do you think them of you?
00:22:53Me of them.
00:22:54My greatest achievement of my life is that I have eight happy children.
00:23:06You know, most people whenever they write a book like this, they write it at the end of their career.
00:23:12Is this a way of us telling you that you're maybe going to move on to another chapter?
00:23:19I'm afraid they're stuck with me here.
00:23:21Have you got something up your sleeve?
00:23:22I'm afraid they're stuck with me here.
00:23:23Yeah, no.
00:23:24Okay, this is good news.
00:23:25Okay, this is good news.
00:23:27I am.
00:23:28They always laugh at me here because I always say how much I love where I work, how much I love all my colleagues, everyone around me.
00:23:34It's not the best, most sensible negotiating tactic, but I love it.
00:23:38I love the people I work with.
00:23:39I feel really privileged to have a ringside seat and to work on the best television show in Ireland prime time. Sorry.
00:23:48I think we're out of time. I think.
00:23:54Miriam, it is a pleasure to have a ringside seat sitting, talking to you here tonight and hearing your story and chatting so beautifully about it.
00:24:03This book is great. Miriam's book, Miriam Life Work Everything is published by Sandy Cove.
00:24:09It is available now.
00:24:10She will be in Eason O'Connell Street tomorrow, 12 noon for a book signing.
00:24:15You're all welcome.
00:24:16Yeah, go on.
00:24:17One more time.
00:24:18Miriam McCallaghan.
00:24:20Thank you so much.
00:24:23Do I go or stay?
00:24:24Do you?
00:24:25Okay.
00:24:26Competition time now.
00:24:27And here is Una Healy with all the details.
00:24:32Roll the bed for Ata.
00:24:34Well, I'm here in Ireland's hidden heartlands at the magnificent Kennedy Castle Hotel.
00:24:38in County Offaly.
00:24:40The castle dates back to the 13th century and it sits within 650 acres of gorgeous parkland.
00:24:46And you could find yourself right here if you win tonight's big prize.
00:24:49Let's go and take a look around.
00:24:52You and a friend will check in for five nights of relaxation and pampering.
00:24:59Enjoy an evening cocktail by the fireside.
00:25:02Sonsha.
00:25:03My favourite part, afternoon tea.
00:25:06Now, where to start?
00:25:08Alongside this gorgeous getaway, the lucky winner will also be raising a glass to 5,000 euro in tax-free cash.
00:25:14Cheers to that.
00:25:16The menus here are brimming with the best of local food.
00:25:20Mmm, delicious.
00:25:22These walls have seen centuries of history and characters, with rumour that a ghost or two may still remain.
00:25:31There's lots of activities to enjoy.
00:25:35If you fancy finding yourself right here with 5,000 euro in tax-free cash burning a hole in your pocket as well, here comes the question.
00:25:43Morticia, Wednesday and Uncle Fester are all members of which macabre fictional family?
00:25:48Is it the Addams Family, the Simpsons or the Kardashians?

00:26:00Maximum cost per entry is โ‚ฌ2.50.
00:26:02You must be over 18 to enter.

00:26:07Lines will close at 10.50 tonight.
00:26:09We'll be calling the lucky winner before the end of the show and you'll need to take that call if you want to win the prize.
00:26:14Good luck!
00:26:15After the break, folks, I'll be hanging tough with the Fittest Family Coaches Plus.
00:26:21We'll be giving love a bad name with John Bon Jovi.
00:26:24Back after these!
00:26:25Um, welcome back to the LEIT LATE show.
00:26:49Welcome back to the Late Late Show and I tonight maybe Halloween but trust me
00:26:54nothing is scarier than my next guests when they tell you to put down the
00:26:57chicken fillet roll and pick up the piss patty when you're walking into the studio
00:27:01they return to our screens with season 13 of TV's most physical challenge
00:27:06Ireland's fittest family this Sunday but first for a little sit-down and a rest
00:27:09would you please welcome Davey Fitzgerald and Donogha O'Callaghan
00:27:19yeah they're already like I mean we can do the Halloween special for this family
00:27:39just pick four right get them yeah we should have dressed up David make a
00:27:44good minion look I mean this this this show season 13 what is it that we're so
00:27:56obsessed about just watching people going through pain Davey while we're eating
00:27:59crisps on the sofa what is it well I love seeing people go through pain that's
00:28:02great listen it's it's something I suppose it's 13 years in the go and it's funny
00:28:08it was an idea myself and a friend of mine came up with over a cup of coffee one
00:28:12morning um it hard to believe but we come up with this thing fitness thing and
00:28:18family like family is probably the most important thing there is out there and
00:28:22you know what to see a mom their children whatever that we've seen different
00:28:29things on the show where they struggle right and if you see the way to work
00:28:32together how proud they are of each other like it's absolutely the biggest kick I
00:28:37get over Patrick has seen that the combination and how to work together it's
00:28:40just brilliant well when you're talking about combinations uh this season is
00:28:44slightly different Danica there there's old coaches there's there is new coaches as
00:28:48well yeah a bit of a change to the format they there's the OGs which is Davey and
00:28:52Anna yeah then there's me that hangs around with them and runs and get some
00:28:56cups of tea and stuff like that but yeah a bit of a change up this year we've a few new
00:29:00exciting coaches we've a new a few events and we've new venues as well so it was it was it was really
00:29:07enjoyable summer of it like Davey said it's always going to get competitive but when
00:29:11you're true new coaches into it new dynamics and then there was real kind of
00:29:15rivalry straight away okay well look I I think we should get a bit of that going
00:29:19let's bring out these new coaches I think we all want to see the new blood
00:29:23uh please welcome Irish swimming legend Ellen Keane and Dublin gas star Michael Dara McCauley
00:29:30so Ellen uh we were right the back there and uh and I came and shook Danica's hand he's a bit sweaty wasn't he
00:29:58well I mean I loved you the rivalry even out the back you were going Danica's a bit sweaty isn't he
00:30:03his hand was really wet he was really nervous yeah had nothing to do with me spilling water on him
00:30:07ah okay she did move her a cup of water straight off it's coming it's coming out now so look you are
00:30:12clearly the youngest coach uh what type of coach are you are you just taking it easy or so I come from
00:30:19an individual sport and if someone were to scream in my face I I wouldn't react well so I thought I'd come
00:30:27into this show I'd be really reserved turns out uh Davey has influenced me by the end of the season
00:30:33I had no voice I'm a little bit afraid of the show coming out because people are definitely going to
00:30:37see a different side to me but do you know what it was really fun it's actually quite fun shouting at
00:30:42people yes so so uh coach against coach so you were up against Davey was was Davey up to his old trick
00:30:49straight away Davey um no I like he's a liar I learned that straight away he's a liar I tried to help her as good as I
00:30:58possibly could at the start right is that right I don't know I'm so gullible that I believe everything he says
00:31:04but he's actually probably just lying that's a good move no listen I Patrick I did when Ellen was there I said
00:31:11she has to be competitive what she's achieved in her sport has been incredible
00:31:15is she a fighter yeah did I get to see the real her probably after the first event a small bit led back
00:31:20then it came it came the battle came I can promise you that okay so that was the battle uh Michael Dara uh
00:31:27uh you're up against uh Anna I had Anna yeah yeah like as soon as you walk onto the Fittest Family floor
00:31:35you're told there is two absolute competitors there and it is this man Davey Fitzgerald and Anna Geary
00:31:41Anna Geary I would like I'd love to sit here and say Anna is an absolute wagon but unfortunately
00:31:46she's actually really lovely and I got on really well with her she's a legend uh so we but like I
00:31:51found like when I was coming up head to head with her at the start she was she was like she'd give
00:31:55you a level of info she'd be like she'll tell you like x and y without telling you z and then and then
00:32:01you'd be like but then as soon as I was up against the other lads in a different show she'd be like
00:32:05voiced out me saying here x y and z and she give me give me give me all the lowdown give you the full
00:32:10scoop yeah Donica I I know you were uh a little bit jealous of of Michael Dara because uh Andrew
00:32:17Trimble of course is is a coach as well yeah um he's a teammate exactly but there was a little
00:32:23bromance there 100% was uh Paddy it really upset me because I was looking forward to spending the
00:32:28summer with Andrew Trimble we'd been through the wars played with each other for since we were under 20
00:32:33and straight away we ended up in a forest in a bog and he's hanging around with Michael Dara the
00:32:37whole time and I'm like Trimble you're my friend come back to me I I've done a lot of community
00:32:43work at the time but babysitting the two rugby lads is a whole different experience like that was like
00:32:47I feel I feel like I really got an insight into like the Irish rugby dressing room in fairness it
00:32:52seems like a bit of crack we're giving that like yeah there's a there's an army eliminator is that
00:32:56right in in the heats so is that um is is that harder than doubling the win in the All-Ireland since you
00:33:03retired or that hasn't gone great has it the last while but if they the like those that is no joke
00:33:11like they did like thank god we're at the sidelines talking nonsense but I had like I had two families
00:33:15who were absolute warriors like the Walsh is from Cork and the Burns from Dublin I got adopted by two
00:33:21mammies uh Amy Amy and Anne who are all legends um but uh they like they went through the ringer like
00:33:28those like basically you need to rename the show how do you get your mammy up a ramp because that's
00:33:33like that's the crack line I had like I had I didn't understand that I had like I had like three fit young
00:33:42fellas and a mam and it was like let's go and they were sending me photos of the mammy's like black and
00:33:47blue after it like they like and they're legends and like they were like more than anything else those
00:33:51two moms wanted to have experience with their kids and they got that and then some yeah I mean look the
00:33:56family Stevie that you were saying you know at the start this this is the heart of it the family's
00:33:59getting together and what they can achieve as a family do you think it would be nice for for the
00:34:04new coaches maybe just just to mix it up in the format this year for them maybe to win because
00:34:09you're the current uh coach champ is that right yeah not really no no no listen when you're in it
00:34:17you're in it to win it um I have to say the level like having six coaches Patrick means the pressure's on
00:34:23way earlier normally we would have had three or four teams there's a bit more comfort
00:34:26no comfort number one and I said with the new coaches they won't have a clue what they're at
00:34:31they brought it they brought it without a shadow of a doubt and you know what I come off the GA
00:34:39season probably uh June May or June and it is absolutely incredible to do something like this
00:34:44work with the lads is brilliant but is it competitive slightly slightly so it is but
00:34:49is uh is Anna Geary still your kryptonite Danica yeah she is anytime I come up against Anna I she
00:34:56gets inside my head something happens and I'm not competing Patrick to win Ireland's for the
00:35:01family I just want the respect of my own family in my own house which you don't have I don't they
00:35:07all cheer for Anna Geary and I'm there like you know what I mean any chance you could show for your
00:35:11dad but no chance but no no I mean look one of the things that they are going to be cheering for
00:35:15is uh is your new book uh a biography of uh of the red pants yes yeah exactly that was a great plug
00:35:23there didn't you yeah yeah thanks very much available all good bookshops yeah well look he he's smiling
00:35:29now but it's it's based on this uh this picture let's have a little look oh there we go
00:35:33we know that we know that was a cold day where was it that was the coldest day ever recorded in
00:35:47carter farms park yeah yeah yeah very very cold yeah but it actually is patrick and i'm not joking
00:35:52page 104 in the book in disaster dad is that moment disaster dad loses his pants in a tunnel and
00:35:59i see the kids going through it going that's ridiculous please don't google me
00:36:04uh ella before we we let you guys go what was the highlight uh throughout the season obviously
00:36:12the banter um what else i think just the experience of seeing what these families go through
00:36:18like i have been a high performing athlete for 20 years i've been at the top of my game for nearly
00:36:2420 years and just to see what they go through like not only are they coming into the show to compete
00:36:29but they're also going on the camera for the first time doing interviews for the first time
00:36:32getting a photo shoot for the first time and by the end of day one i was wrecked i couldn't i
00:36:39couldn't string a sentence together and then they still had to keep going so i can't believe the kind
00:36:44of determination the mindset the discipline the fact that these families come together and aren't
00:36:50bickering and arguing by the end of it they're incredible i think trying to work out who my
00:36:58money's on here i mean you're talking a good game you really are talking a good game uh we will find out

00:39:25all sold out shows razor sharp wit and smoldering good looks some say they are the west life of
00:39:31comedy however they say they're just young hot guys would you please welcome shane daniel byrne
00:39:38tony cantwell and cillian sunderman
00:40:01welcome to the show guys uh congrats on the podcast congrats on the title young
00:40:07hot guys i believe in a world of fake news uh truth is is important can i say thanks to the
00:40:15audience for their enthusiasm because they don't know who we are and i really appreciate
00:40:25to be fair they like what they see yeah they like what they see yeah we'll talk after yeah no
00:40:32we got the podcast is called young hot guys we wanted to call it tree fellas having the crack yeah
00:40:36and everyone was like just say it like it is do you ever mean i mean i mean to be fair it is more
00:40:41broadcast than than podcast to be fair let's have a look this is uh this is you guys uh oh yeah i mean
00:40:48it's all there it's like a westlife flashback there i feel that lovely post-covid sodium glow that we all
00:40:59seem to have around our bellies we are actually getting sued for false advertising for the name
00:41:04i can't believe that was just on today late yeah i feel a bit sick actually they didn't tell us they
00:41:09used that one no no they didn't uh tony you're just back from uh from trick-or-treating how did that
00:41:15go uh it went very well uh with your children with my children
00:41:22i just knock around he just loves it just knock around sweet yeah i go on i say
00:41:28no it was good uh i've eaten a lot of their sweets already and what i find it weird like you always
00:41:33say that like you'll never like lie to your kids and then like halloween comes around and you eat
00:41:37all of their sweets and not only do you like lie the next day you like fully gaslight the children
00:41:43words like what sweets what are you talking about oh no you ate them oh you were so ramped up you
00:41:49don't remember so that's why i'm so ramped up right now no it's it's good work uh killian uh your
00:41:55background is 75 german 25 irish is that is that a good mix that's yeah well i actually found out
00:42:03recently seven like 25 irish is the maximum recommended dosage uh any more than that you're in trouble
00:42:10which is unfortunately these two guys well no it was hard like growing up in ireland as a german it
00:42:16was quite difficult like uh used to get but people used to call me a nazi a lot yeah which is yeah thank
00:42:22you for the all there no it's hard getting called a nazi because it's not the kind of word that you can
00:42:26kind of reclaim as your own i can't really like walk up to my dad and be like what's going on you hot nazi
00:42:34it's not and it's not unfair my family weren't nazi like they were so against them they like they
00:42:40left germany in 1945 they were gone like they hated them they got as far away from the nazis as they
00:42:45could they went to argentina bolivia this wasn't on my bingo card for halloween but uh it's so what
00:42:53would you say the main differences are between germans and irish uh well germ obviously we're famous for
00:42:57our wit you know um uh no my dad my dad like he's uh he's lived in ireland like longer than he's lived
00:43:05in germany now so he's like he kind of he tries to have the crack you know it's great he always talks
00:43:09about like i don't know he loves the guys like oh call him the goose cooper the best player there ever
00:43:13was and all this kind of stuff and it's lovely but like he tried he tries to give me jokes all the
00:43:17time like uh the other day he's like um oh killian i've got i've got a really good joke for you
00:43:22uh so i was listening to the radio yarn talking about the airports and uh they're saying the
00:43:27airports are so crazy at the moment they're calling joe they're going oh joe the airports are so crazy
00:43:32yeah so you can have that joke uh
00:43:37just the concept of airports
00:43:42shane let us know tony that that you are a dad um is the kids easier to juggle or these two guys how
00:43:49does that work these lads um a lot cheaper i'd have to say which bodes well it's madly i had to
00:43:55i had a bisectomy recently so i'm not going to buy any more crap but uh i did have to buy a booster
00:44:00seat like a year ago and i couldn't believe like the price of them and like the names they have one
00:44:04was called like the baby zen lexus pro that's a good model professional of what like sitting on a rice
00:44:11cake until it ferments that's like a full-time job but this lady showed me this one and it was the most
00:44:17expensive you've said this is top of the line i said why she said because a child can sit in this
00:44:20booster seat from birth up to the age of 12. and i said you say 12 and she goes yeah legally now
00:44:28children have to sit in a booster seat until they're 12 years of age and i was thinking of all the
00:44:33memories of like my childhood like being in like a hiatus van with no windows going down to dingle
00:44:38me but then i was like sir are you telling me 12 there's somewhere in ireland right now there's like
00:44:46some big young flip you know
00:44:50some big young flip just like bent into a booster seat little gen z haircut puffing on a vape you know
00:45:00who's probably scored more birds than i have
00:45:01and that's why you don't take a lift with this man shane i don't take a lift with tony no you drive
00:45:12yourself to gigs that is most of what being a comedian is we're stand-up comedians believe it or
00:45:16not um that's most of what is is hitting the road and like i like that handy but then i i find it
00:45:21there's these jokes that there's gay guys about i'm a gay guy that's his first time saying that
00:45:28yeah yeah you're like miriam i'm leo it's my first time oh my god

00:50:48amazing so you know shane you know knows the the catchphrases i mean you have a you should always
00:50:53reference ireland there were a couple of irish catchphrases in there too yeah over the years irene says
00:50:59oh god save ireland we actually have this we actually find this this is it's weird and because
00:51:05my mother used to say it so many of the the things that i say on the show that like it's a bit like
00:51:11alf you know with his stone the flame and crows and you know what does he say um strike me roan
00:51:17strike me pink um but a lot of my stuff which is you know oh for god's sake girly and all of that
00:51:24um is from my mum and dad and so i kind of brought it to the to the show and the writers went oh that'll
00:51:31do and they kept writing it in well look we actually we have a little clip of this like
00:51:37she she's still reading the flippin menu i mean god save ireland she knows the damn thing of my heart

00:53:16never say never patrick but i don't think i could do another 33 years okay no i'd be like 300 about
00:53:26because you know a lot of a lot of similar plot lines you know over the years um do you think you
00:53:31could tell the difference between a fair city plot line and a home and away plot line i'd give it a
00:53:35red hot go okay well look here that's it maybe you can help with this we've got a few here you can
00:53:40tell us whether you think these are our uh home and away or our fair city we guess as well yeah

00:58:04and a dream that took him all the way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
00:58:07selling over 130 million records and wowing audiences around the world with classics like this.
00:58:25It's my life.
00:58:56Next summer he's going to be going down in his very own Hill 16 blaze of glory in Croke Park.
00:59:01But until then, we're delighted to say we're halfway there and living on a prayer with Jon Bon Jovi.
00:59:25Welcome to the show.
00:59:31Thank you, Patrick.
00:59:32Look at all those nice people.
00:59:35Thank you, brother.
00:59:37By the way, you have never seen our house band so excited in their life.
00:59:42There they are.
00:59:43How did they do?
00:59:44Awesome.
00:59:45Those high notes, they're not easy, are they?
00:59:48Look, we're delighted to have you here.
00:59:51Yeah, I'm happy to be here.
00:59:52You have been coming here for long and many today.
00:59:54You're back in Croke Park next year.
00:59:56Are you as excited as this lot are?
00:59:58I am.
00:59:59I am.
01:00:00It's been too long.
01:00:01Looking forward to be back on the road and the first place in the world that I come to announce
01:00:05it is here in Dublin, so it makes my heart feel good, you know, just to see old friends again.
01:00:10The last time you were here was 2019.
01:00:12Yeah.
01:00:13You called over to say hello to a rock legend here in Dublin.
01:00:17We got a little pick off you here.
01:00:18Yeah.
01:00:19This is you with Phil Linnett, the Phil Linnett statue.
01:00:23I believe you were there today again.
01:00:24I was.
01:00:25Yeah?
01:00:26There you go.
01:00:27Yeah.
01:00:28So, I mean, Thin Lizzy and Phil, they were kind of inspirations starting out.
01:00:33They came up at a very influential time in my life because we were young teenage boys
01:00:39when Lizzy was doing Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak and, you know, doing their version
01:00:44of Whiskey in the Jar and those things were breaking in America and they made storytelling,
01:00:50you know, fun.
01:00:52And you were saying that, you know, that Lizzy sign was kind of a bit of that stadium energy
01:00:55that you guys sort of harnessed.
01:00:57No doubt.
01:00:58I was thinking about how many times I've sung those songs over the years.
01:01:01That's how I learned to play those songs, which is why I learned how to write songs.
01:01:07You know, instead of a guitar teacher teaching you simple scales, this guitar teacher took
01:01:11out the sheet music to Boys Are Back in Town and said, watch this.
01:01:15And now he was like, there was a magic potion.
01:01:17Look, before there were the stadiums there were those small gigs starting out in Jersey.
01:01:21Sure.
01:01:22What was it like coming from New Jersey, in a band, playing in New Jersey, and this guy
01:01:29walking in?
01:01:30Oh.
01:01:31Bruce Springsteen just turning up.
01:01:34I'm still in high school in that photograph.
01:01:37It's 1979.
01:01:39The first time that we, you know, look at the drummer.
01:01:44He's looking at him like it's, you know, in the back there.
01:01:46Yes.
01:01:47He's just, everyone's in awe because, you know, he's Bruce and he was four albums into
01:01:54his career at that point.
01:01:55And so, everybody always looked up to him and his music is what made the Jersey Rock
01:02:00scene happen.
01:02:01And I mean, of course, he played Ireland last year.
01:02:03You're going to be playing next year.
01:02:04You guys still take those little car journeys together.
01:02:08Tell us about that.
01:02:09Often.
01:02:10You know, it started some years ago when we would get together, it'd be at his house,
01:02:13my house.
01:02:14There's always the distraction.
01:02:16Who's coming in?
01:02:17What are you doing?
01:02:18Who's, you know?
01:02:19And we just started taking these drives, no car, radio, no phone, no body.
01:02:24And, you know, you can go for a hundred miles and, you know, just catch up.
01:02:29But the cute stories that have now circulated that you see in the, you know, people have
01:02:33posted is we stopped for an ice cream cone or a beer somewhere and there's people and
01:02:38you're sitting there, you know, eating an ice cream cone and they sort of, you know, get
01:02:42a kick out of the two of us being around Jersey.
01:02:44The double take at the lights.
01:02:46It's like, whoa, there's Bruce.
01:02:47Whoa, there's Joe.
01:02:48Yeah.
01:02:49Yeah, it's cute.
01:02:50It's cute.
01:02:51I was looking back on your career.
01:02:53I mean, there was no plan B, was there?
01:02:56No.
01:02:57You, from a really early age, were going to be a rock star and you were.
01:03:02I mean, even just the smile as we're saying that.
01:03:05Um, I loved music.
01:03:09I love the feeling that it gave me.
01:03:11Also, I had the benefit of being that young.
01:03:14When you're that young, you can chase a dream and not have the responsibility of worrying
01:03:18about it.
01:03:19Am I even going to go to a college, you know, after high school?
01:03:22So because I had cut my teeth at that early age and had written Runaway by the time I was
01:03:2721, I had a record deal.
01:03:29So I didn't have to fall back, you know, although I absolutely had no plan B. I was also fortunate
01:03:35enough to get a record deal at that age.
01:03:36It's the same record deal today.
01:03:38Wow.
01:03:39I mean, you know, you're talking there about the Power Station.
01:03:41I mean, that's, you know, where you recorded Runaway in the Power Station.
01:03:46You got a job in that record, in that recording studio.
01:03:50There you are.
01:03:51Yeah.
01:03:52You got a job in that recording studio as tea and coffee boy, is that right?
01:03:55That's right.
01:03:56Which basically gave you a ringside seat to some of the all time greats.
01:03:59It's true.
01:04:00I had seen the Rolling Stones or David Bowie.
01:04:03I saw through the window Freddie Mercury and Bowie singing under pressure.
01:04:07I mean, crazy stuff.
01:04:09They let you go into the studio and you recorded Runaway and that was kind of the start.
01:04:12Yeah.
01:04:13That was the beginning of it.
01:04:14And I went to see a DJ.
01:04:15I thought it was really a lightning bolt moment where I thought, who is the loneliest but most
01:04:20passionate person in the music business?
01:04:23And I thought, a DJ.
01:04:24He sits in a dark room by himself spinning a record, telling you a story, convincing you to
01:04:29love the music as much as he did.
01:04:31I went and I knocked on this brand new radio station's window with the cassette.
01:04:36Played it for him after his shift and he said, it's a hit song.
01:04:38I said, I know.
01:04:39I think it is too.
01:04:40Fortunately, he put it on the radio in New York.
01:04:44And that's what got me a record deal.
01:04:45I mean, this is a bit of a pinch me moment for me because you're talking about cassettes.
01:04:50Whenever I was growing up in Dundrum County Dine, Little Village when I was 15, I remember
01:04:53taking my cassette player and actually recording your songs on the radio to play to my
01:04:59Gaelic football team.
01:05:00You have no idea.
01:05:01This is true.
01:05:06I mean, you have no idea how many times we played You Give Love a Bad Name and thought
01:05:13we were going to win and still got beaten.
01:05:15It was so good.
01:05:17I mean, were you ready for that level of fame and attention?
01:05:23Because that Slippery When Wet album was just huge.
01:05:26Who knew?
01:05:27You have nobody, nothing can prepare you for that.
01:05:30And the magic trick was trying to hold on to that rocket ship.
01:05:36It's one in a million that you ever get a record like that.
01:05:42It's one in a billion to come back and have New Jersey that followed.
01:05:46In fact, the New Jersey tour started here in Dublin.
01:05:49The very first night was at The Point in 1988.
01:05:54A year after the tour ended for Slippery, we had written New Jersey, came back and were
01:06:00back on the road, which was too much to be honest.
01:06:03It was too much.
01:06:04But coming out here on Halloween night 1988, just all came back to me, was the first show
01:06:09of the New Jersey tour and that album had five more top 10 singles on it.
01:06:14So we were in a groove.
01:06:16I mean, the sound was amazing.
01:06:18The look was also very strong, John, I have to say.
01:06:22I mean, how much...
01:06:24Let's talk about the hair game, because the hair game at that time was extraordinary.
01:06:29I mean, so there was you guys, there was Def Leppard, there was Guns N' Roses,
01:06:32there was Motley Crue.
01:06:34Who had the best hair game?
01:06:37Not us.
01:06:39No.
01:06:40Not us.
01:06:41Yeah.
01:06:42You could see that I'm hiding behind a headband and sunglasses and I'm starting to get very
01:06:47tired of this whole thing.
01:06:50David looks like he has a big Labrador retriever on his back.
01:06:54Look at all that Mapa hair he had.
01:06:57And Tico with that pompadour.
01:06:59Yeah, these are my baby pictures.
01:07:02I'm sorry.
01:07:03But I love that whenever you actually, you know, you cut your hair and people were just
01:07:08devastated.
01:07:09I mean, people didn't want the hair to go solo.
01:07:11Yeah.
01:07:12Well, you know, it fortunately was those kind of things that fueled our having the next chapters.
01:07:21We didn't follow fads and fashions and we created our own thing.
01:07:26You know, right the way through, you know, we were talking before the show about your wife,
01:07:30Dorothea.
01:07:31Dorothea Hurley, by the way.
01:07:32Yes, very Irish.
01:07:33Proper Irish name.
01:07:34Strong Irish name.
01:07:35Absolutely.
01:07:36I mean, what did she make of all of that at that time?
01:07:41She probably had more fun than I did.
01:07:45In truth, because we had gone to school together.
01:07:48You guys met in history class.
01:07:49In history class.
01:07:50And when we were 18 years old, she'd been on this whole rollercoaster ride, the ups,
01:07:54the downs and the skyrocket.
01:07:56So there was no surprises with her.
01:08:00And that was good for both of us because you had somebody that you could rely on and
01:08:04also somebody to take the ride with and that you could trust throughout the whole course
01:08:10of the journey.
01:08:11And it's been a hell of a ride.
01:08:13Yeah.
01:08:14Yeah.
01:08:15No complaints.
01:08:16Your son, Jake and Millie Bobby Brown, they now have a little baby.
01:08:23Congratulations.
01:08:24Yeah, I'm a grandpa.
01:08:26How does that feel being an international rock god and grandpa?
01:08:29It's crazy.
01:08:30Is that still okay?
01:08:31It's okay.
01:08:32It's really special.
01:08:34These are the chapters in life that you're supposed to enjoy the most and I am.
01:08:39It's crazy to see the next generation.
01:08:42I've just gotten used to having the kids around.
01:08:45Now they're bringing me kids.
01:08:47So it's a lot of fun.
01:08:49Jake and Millie are doing great.
01:08:51What my other son Jesse and his wife are expecting any minute now.
01:08:54So we'll have two of them for the holidays.
01:08:56Okay.
01:08:57So there's going to be a bit of a choice then for Lullaby Judy with grandpa.
01:09:01Right.
01:09:02More importantly, I get the chance to spoil them rotten.
01:09:04There you go.
01:09:05There we go.
01:09:06We talked about the voice and being back on a big, big tour.
01:09:13And I know it was important for you for that voice to be absolutely right before you came back out again.
01:09:19And what sort of a journey was that?
01:09:21It's hard.
01:09:22It tests you.
01:09:24I didn't lose faith, but I really didn't think it would take this long.
01:09:30Maybe prior to the surgery, if you'd said it's going to be three and a half years, call me then.
01:09:36I might have thought about not doing it.
01:09:40But I trusted in the doctor and I followed the protocols and I feel good now.
01:09:49Well, look, I mean, we are so looking forward to this.
01:09:51Me too.
01:09:52There's going to be so much joy in Crow Park next August.
01:09:53We also have this coming out.
01:09:55This is the legendary edition of Forever.
01:09:59So this is the Forever album that you have then gone back in and you've got some of your friends.
01:10:04Tell us who's on this.
01:10:05Well, in truth, you know, what happened was it was such a joyous record and we were ready to tour it with the documentary for the 40th anniversary.
01:10:13And then I said, I'm sorry, guys, I can't.
01:10:15I'm not ready.
01:10:16So using the Beatles song as our motto, I said, with a little help from my friends, if I called Bruce and Joe Elliott and a bunch of friends and said,
01:10:27would you do a feature version of this record?
01:10:30Because the record is good.
01:10:31It's really good.
01:10:32And it didn't get a chance to be heard.
01:10:35And so all of my friends said, we got your back.
01:10:38And it gives us a chance to write a new song, put this album out with the features and come to Dublin to announce Crow Park.
01:10:45I mean, come to Dublin to announce Crow Park.
01:10:47It's so, so good.
01:10:48It's going to be a hot, hot ticket.
01:10:54You're playing Crow Park.
01:10:56John, if you could actually do me a favour.
01:10:58I talked about McGilley football team earlier on.
01:11:00They're called, they're called County Down.
01:11:03They very rarely get to Crow Park.
01:11:06So this is a little gift that you can just bring this to you for luck.
01:11:10So that's a bit of County Down bad medicine for you.
01:11:17Thank you so, so much.
01:11:18Great to see you.
01:11:19One more time.
01:11:20John Bongilley.
01:11:21OK.
01:11:26John is going to stay with us.
01:11:27We are in for an absolute treat next August.
01:11:30It is going to be a hot, hot ticket.
01:11:32But for three lucky members of our studio audience, we're going to give them a chance right now to get their hands on those tickets.
01:11:40I'm not sure you're going to be as enthusiastic when we find out how those tickets are going to be given away as we play a little game of something that can definitely get you slippery when wet.
01:11:55It is time for a Bon Jovi edition of Splash Hits.
01:12:00Yes.
01:12:06As always, it couldn't be easier.
01:12:08We have three super fans, John.
01:12:10All they got to do to win tickets to the hottest gig in town next year is to keep the faith and prove how big a Bon Jovi fan they are by singing the next line of some of your biggest hits.
01:12:21It is really easy to get it right and they are off to see Bon Jovi get it wrong and they are going to get shivery when wet.
01:12:28Let's see who is going to be living on a prayer tonight with some Bon Jovi tickets and who is going to be giving their Bon Jovi knowledge a bad name.
01:12:37Our first player is Adele Boxwell.
01:12:40Hi Adele from Tala.
01:12:41How are you doing?
01:12:42Hi.
01:12:43How are you?
01:12:44Are you a big Bon Jovi fan?
01:12:45Yep.
01:12:46Massive.
01:12:47Are you slightly nervous?
01:12:48Absolutely.
01:12:49I am absolutely breaking it.
01:12:52Honestly, absolutely no pressure.
01:12:54You are just on national TV singing a Bon Jovi song in front of Bon Jovi.
01:13:00This will be absolutely fine.
01:13:02OK, Adele?
01:13:03Yep.
01:13:04To win tickets to see Bon Jovi live in Crow Park, all you have to do is give us the next line of this famous Bon Jovi song.
01:13:11Here it comes.
01:13:12I played my part and you played your game?
01:13:24That's right.
01:13:25OK.
01:13:26Well done.
01:13:27Next up we have Paul McCarthy.
01:13:28I thought it was...
01:13:29Paul McCartney.
01:13:30Paul McCartney from Liverpool.
01:13:31Paul McCartney from Liverpool.

01:13:33Oh, wow.
01:13:34Paul's got a bit of work done.

01:13:38Best of luck.
01:13:39Are you a big Bon Jovi fan, Paul?
01:13:40My wife is Catherine, but if I don't get this right I'm walking back to Limerick.
01:13:45OK, this is absolutely perfect.
01:13:46So your wife is a huge fan, there's lots of pressure on you, but you may not know the
01:13:52words to this.
01:13:53This is exactly what we need.
01:13:54Here comes your banger from Bon Jovi.

01:14:09Oh, my wife is Catherine, but if I don't get this right I'm walking back to Limerick.
01:14:12OK, this is absolutely perfect.
01:14:13So your wife is a huge fan, there's lots of pressure on you but you may not know the words
01:14:14to this.
01:14:15This is exactly what we need.
01:14:16Here comes your banger from Bon Jovi.
01:14:19No people like me

01:14:51I mean, we all knew that
01:14:53We all knew that, Paul
01:14:54So, fine, no tickets for Paul
01:14:56Sorry, Paul
01:14:57No, Paul, you gotta give Paul tickets
01:14:59Okay, okay, well maybe give Paul tickets
01:15:01Finally, we've got Caroline Cordes from Cork
01:15:04Caroline, how you doing?

01:15:11Okay, best of luck
01:15:13How much do you want to win these tickets for Bon Jovi?
01:15:14It'll be like winning the lotto
01:15:16It'll be amazing
01:15:17Okay, best of luck
01:15:19All you gotta do is give us the next line
01:15:21Of the Bon Jovi song

01:15:24We gotta hold on
01:15:27To what we've got
