00:00Oh
00:30You are so welcome to this show. Yes, autumn is here and like a misty September morning
00:35I'm back cool gray and just a little bit damp
00:39We've got a great lineup for our first show of the season. Look over there singing for us later. It's a fabulous Ray
00:50New single where is my husband, but more to the point where are my guests? Let's get them on
00:55First off we love them as the front top and victory in Grantchester and we love to hate him as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley
01:03Now he brings us the epic succession drama House of Guinness. It's our good friend James Norton
01:19This Oscar-winning actor and writer swaggered into our screens and days to confuse
01:24Won our hearts in how to lose a guy in 10 days and was out of this world in interstellar
01:29His latest book poems and prayers is already a Sunday Times bestseller while he returns to our screens in a heroic
01:36True story the lost bus. It is a warm welcome back to Matthew McConaughey
01:41And we've got two stars from the new sports drama the smashing machine
02:00She made her mark in the devil wears Prada thrilled us in a quiet place and was Oscar nominated for a performance in the global hit Oppenheimer
02:07Oppenheimer it's Emily Blunt everybody
02:09Oh so shiny, so shimmery
02:14So business
02:16So nice to see you
02:18And as The Rock he conquered the wrestling world before turning action movie star with roles in it's like Jumanji Moana and the Fast and Furious franchise
02:29Now earning rave reviews for his performance as champion wrestler Mark Kerr in the smashing machine
02:36It's the mighty Dwayne Johnson
02:38It's the mighty Dwayne Johnson
02:43Come here buddy
02:44Hello, how are you?
02:45How are you?
02:46How are you?
02:47How are you?
02:48How are you?
02:49And Grace?
02:50Lovely to see you
02:51Oh
02:53Hey
02:54Welcome along
02:55What a couch
02:56Sit down, sit down, sit down
02:57Lovely
02:58Lovely
02:59Welcome along
03:00Thank you very much for being here
03:01Lovely to see you all
03:02Thank you so much
03:03Cheers
03:04Cheers
03:05Cheers
03:06Cheers
03:07Cheers
03:08Okay
03:09Yeah, if you're wondering. Tequila
03:13Now some of you know it are James, I've got to ask you, are you alright because you injured yourself
03:17Are you alright because you don't know any of us?
03:20I
03:23Know you
03:25Yeah, and you've met the other packs. We had a lovely time with tequila and other things. Yeah
03:30Just a little short. I
03:34Am fine. I was this is the thing that all now a king and conqueror which on BBC one on Sunday nights. Yes. I fell off a horse
03:41Yeah, I fell off was my broke my collarbone now
03:44In Iceland now, I was thinking oh that must be terrible to fall of a horse quite a distance
03:49And then I saw a picture of you with the horse and you are taller than yes
03:56Surely a pony
03:58Okay, yeah, so Iceland have a protective order on their horses
04:01You cannot import a horse because they have this kind of gene pool and it doesn't it can't be polluted
04:05And so we we having committed to shoot the whole thing and I said and I was a producer on the show as well
04:09So I we were tasked with finding the biggest Icelandic ponies we could find and they were
04:14But that was the biggest we could find
04:16Even though it was it was that small. I still broke my collarbone from falling from that great height. So yeah
04:21When did it happen?
04:22It happened at the very beginning of all the stunt sequences. That's fun. Yeah starts though
04:27If you have one of those scenes where you might get injured, it's a good thing to schedule those at the end of the show
04:32Yeah
04:34Yeah
04:36Yeah, well producers producers will do that
04:44I learned a lot
04:47But also looking at that I'm thinking Dwayne never do an historical epic in Iceland because that pony would not survive
04:57Does a regular horse make a noise when you get on it
04:59Like does it go
05:01Oh
05:03Yeah, why?
05:04Because there's a lot of muscle mass there
05:06I mean that
05:07A horse would be going oh Jesus look at this
05:10Oh my god
05:11It groans, it groans, yeah. Many things groan when I get on it
05:13Yes, yes, yes
05:15I'm writing that down
05:17I'm writing that down
05:19I'm writing that down
05:21Thank you
05:23All right
05:25Let's get on with our first film tonight Dwayne and Emily are together in The Smashing Machine
05:31It's in cinemas from the 3rd of October and here's just a little taste of what to expect
05:37Yeah, Don, can you take this picture for us?
05:39Yeah
05:40What are you thinking at the beginning of the fight?
05:42It's simple
05:44Am I going to hurt him before he hurts me?
05:46Yes, there was a lie
05:50I will show you
05:53This ramp for you to crown the greatest fighter in the world
06:03He has come back from the break
06:05Let's see if he can pull out a victory over Mark Coleman
06:09Have you spoken to either about fighting such a good friend for a life-changing amount of money?
06:14I just need you to let me in
06:19Always about you
06:20Only about fighting you
06:21Everything is about you
06:26Let's fucking go
06:34Extra man, I love you
06:41So good
06:42Thank you man
06:44Thank you
06:45Thank you
06:46Thank you brother
06:47It is phenomenal
06:48It's a true story
06:49Mark Kerr
06:50He was sort of the first star to come out of the MMA UFC world
06:54He was, yeah
06:55For a lot of you who don't know him
06:56And a lot of people don't know him
06:57Mark Kerr was the first
06:59He was one of the pioneers of
07:01There he is right there
07:02Of MMA
07:03And he was at one time
07:04He was the greatest fighter on the planet
07:06Heavyweight fighter
07:07And at that time
07:09There were no rules
07:10No regulations
07:11And
07:12And then it was different
07:13And there was no infrastructure around it
07:15There was no
07:16Financial planning
07:17There was just
07:18Fighters
07:19And
07:20Mark fought his way to the top
07:22And he
07:24And he struggled
07:25And he struggled like a lot of fighters do
07:27Unfortunately though
07:28He struggled under pressure
07:29And the pressure in many ways got to him
07:31There was addiction involved
07:32And he wound up overdosing twice
07:34And he's lucky to be alive
07:35But he's here today
07:36And
07:37Not here in the audience
07:38But he is alive
07:39Ladies and gentlemen
07:40Mark Kerr
07:41But he is with us today
07:43And he had this
07:44Unbelievable life
07:45And he had this
07:46Volcanic relationship
07:48With his
07:49Girlfriend who eventually became his wife
07:51And they have a beautiful son named Bryce
07:52So
07:53It was
07:54It was really the role of a lifetime
07:56So Emily tell us about Dawn
07:57Yeah
07:58I mean she's an extraordinary person
08:00You know
08:01And I
08:02I found her
08:03When I spoke to her
08:04Sort of simultaneously heartbreaking
08:05And fierce
08:06And
08:07I think it is a very
08:09Complex
08:10Relationship to be in
08:12When you're
08:13With a very dedicated athlete
08:16Whose life is on the line constantly
08:18Yeah
08:19Through his own addiction
08:20Through actually being in the ring
08:21And they did have this rather hazardous
08:24Relationship
08:25But
08:26I think the movie is less about
08:28You know
08:29You know
08:30It's set to the backdrop of this
08:31Nineties machismo
08:32But it's so about vulnerability
08:34And the brokenness
08:35And like how you never really know
08:36What's going on in someone's life
08:37You know
08:38Yeah
08:39And the image of invincibility
08:40Is not really the truth
08:41You know
08:42And we've got to talk about
08:43The Venice Film Festival
08:44Because you took
08:45Actual Mark Kerr with you
08:46Yeah
08:47So I mean obviously
08:48Emotional to watch it
08:49But to watch it with him
08:50Yeah
08:51There is
08:52To watch it with him
08:53That was the first time he'd seen it right
08:54It was the first time he'd seen it with an audience
08:56So we get to the Venice Film Festival
08:58Which we're there for competition
08:59And we're sitting there and watching it
09:01I sat next to Mark
09:02Mark's a big guy
09:03And I could feel him
09:05And he's shaking
09:06He's shaking the entire movie
09:08Especially the fight scenes with him and his girlfriend
09:10Who eventually became his wife Dawn
09:12He's shaking
09:13Every once in a while I reach over and grab his knee
09:15And towards the end of the movie
09:17Where we have the big scene
09:19Yeah
09:20With Emily and I
09:21Don't ruin it
09:22I won't ruin it
09:23Don't over bitch
09:24Keep going
09:25I won't
09:26I won't
09:27I won't
09:28I won't
09:29I won't
09:30I won't
09:31I won't
09:32So anyway
09:33You'll never guess what happens
09:34And then he is really shaking and crying
09:35And then I look over
09:36And Benny Safdie's holding his hand
09:38And you know
09:40In Venice Film Festival
09:41It's very ceremonial
09:42Right?
09:43As we know
09:44And it means a lot
09:45Films mean a lot to people in Venice
09:46Yeah
09:47And at the Venice Film Festival
09:48Yeah
09:49And before the credits came up
09:50Um
09:52The audience erupts
09:54And they give us a fifteen and a half minute standing ovation
09:58And Mark Kerr
10:00Is sobbing
10:01Which makes us all cry
10:03Yeah
10:04And Benny as well
10:05And it was just beautiful
10:06We've got a little bit of footage of the ovation
10:08Yes
10:09And I say
10:10It goes
10:11I mean it's incredible
10:12Look at me
10:13By the way
10:14Yes
10:15This is over
10:16So I can embarrass you
10:17I know
10:18No look at your face
10:19Beside yourself
10:20Yes
10:21And Mark Kerr's beside me
10:22That's Mark
10:23So there I am
10:24Right?
10:25I'm
10:26Very emotional
10:27House lights come on
10:28Before they're expected
10:29I'm crying
10:30And I'm trying to wipe my tears away
10:31To try and still stay cool
10:33And this one is like
10:35Can you believe that we did that thing
10:37Whatever the fucking joke was that she said
10:38No
10:39You can see
10:40Hey what are you talking about
10:41You can see in the clip that he's crying
10:42And I went
10:43Do you remember on Jungle Cruise
10:44When you said you never cried?
10:45I know
10:46I'm in a moment
10:48I'm in a moment
10:49I'm in a moment
10:50It's like the British thing
10:52No I think it's the British thing
10:53No I think it's the British thing
10:54No I think it's the British thing
10:55Like where it's like
10:56It's a long time for people to be clapping
10:57And I start to get embarrassed
10:58Yeah
10:59Yeah
11:00So I started making jokes
11:01Because I was like
11:02Oh God
11:03This is so much
11:04To remain kind of humble and grateful
11:06Yes
11:07It's quite hard
11:08Yeah it's hard
11:09Thank you so much
11:10And here's the thing
11:11You know just watching the trailer there
11:13You know that idea of Dwayne Johnson
11:16Disappearing into any role
11:17You kind of think
11:18Oh how can you transform
11:19But you do
11:20What what
11:22And it's not just the physical thing
11:24Because it's obviously this hair
11:25But other things went on
11:26It was about 22 prosthetics
11:28We had Kazuheroes
11:30Our Oscar winning prosthetic artist
11:32And he helped me transform
11:34There was also a vocal transformation too
11:36But the idea I think of transforming for me
11:39Was something that
11:41You know I didn't know that I was
11:43I didn't know that that was for me
11:45And I wanted to do that
11:46Because a lot of times
11:47In the movies that I've made in the past
11:49The bigger movies
11:50They're big and they're fun
11:51And I've liked them
11:52From Jumanji to Moana
11:54And I'll go back to those
11:56But there was something about this opportunity
11:58Where there was a little
12:00There was a voice behind my ribcage
12:02That was just telling me
12:03Right
12:04So like
12:05It's like
12:06And I'd share this with Emily
12:07For years
12:08Like it's just
12:09It's gnawing at my gut
12:10To do more
12:11And challenge myself
12:12And grow
12:13And do something
12:15Where I'm not chasing box office
12:17But I'm doing it for me
12:18Yeah
12:19And it wound up being
12:20The most greatest
12:22Most gratifying thing
12:23And I've said this before
12:25And I mean it
12:26Smash machine changed my life
12:28Well you so pulled it off
12:30Thank you very much
12:31It really is phenomenal
12:32And Matthew
12:33I'm interested because
12:34You had a kind of
12:35Similar career pivot
12:36To what Dwayne's doing now
12:38Where you had this
12:39Incredibly successful career
12:40With rom-coms
12:41Rom-coms
12:42And you went
12:43No I'm going to search out
12:44Different sorts of parts
12:45More meaningful parts
12:46How hard was it
12:47To turn your back
12:48On that
12:49Incredibly successful career
12:50So similar to what Dwayne said
12:51I had that 4am in my solitude
12:53On my own
12:54Truth that hit me
12:55That lands like a butterfly
12:57And strikes like a lightning bolt
12:58At the same time
12:59That truth that you go
13:00Okay
13:01Tomorrow when the sun comes up
13:02And I'm back in the masses
13:03And all the world's coming at me
13:04And all those offers
13:05I need to remember this truth
13:06Now
13:07I've been trying to get dramas
13:09And was even offering
13:10Huge pay cuts
13:11And they were like
13:12No stay in your lane McConaughey
13:13You're the rom-com guy
13:14You got that down
13:15Mind you I enjoyed him
13:16But I was wanting to do something different
13:17Yeah
13:18Because I couldn't do what I wanted to do
13:19I stopped doing what I'm doing
13:20So I said no more
13:21No more rom-coms
13:22Called the agent
13:23Said let the town know
13:25It's not going to happen
13:26I went to Texas
13:27Camilla's pregnant
13:28On the ranch
13:29Quiet down there
13:30Camilla says to me
13:31Look you don't know how long
13:32It's going to be dry
13:33How long you're going to not go with work
13:34This could go on
13:35But this is non-negotiable
13:36We're not going back
13:37I was like not going back
13:38Now
13:39A year goes by
13:40Nothing
13:41Nothing
13:42Nothing
13:43I call my agent
13:44He goes Matthew I haven't even heard your name
13:45In six months
13:46I'm going okay
13:47I may have just wrote myself
13:48A one way ticket out of Hollywood
13:49I start to think about
13:51Other vocations
13:52School teacher
13:53Wildlife guide
13:54Maybe I'll go back to law school
13:55Alright
13:5618 months go by
13:58I really think I've done it
14:00I'm out
14:01I get this romantic action comedy
14:04It comes with an 8 million dollar offer
14:06I read it
14:07I pass
14:08I say no thank you
14:09Comes back with a 10 million dollar offer
14:10I said no thank you
14:11Comes back with a 12 million dollar offer
14:13I said no thank you
14:14It comes back with a 14.5 million dollar offer
14:17I said
14:18Let me read that thing
14:21Yay
14:22Same words as the 8 million dollar offer
14:23But it was better
14:25It was funnier
14:26I could see myself
14:27This could work right
14:28But I ultimately said no
14:30That must be so hard to say no
14:32It was
14:33Say a no to it
14:34Thank you Hantalones
14:35I think sent
14:36A little invisible message to Hollywood
14:39Oh McConaughey's not bluffing
14:40We were talking about not flinching
14:41Yes
14:42Oh he's playing offense
14:44He's not just doing nothing
14:45He's playing
14:46He's on to something
14:48And
14:4920 months
14:50Two months after I turned that down
14:52The offers came in
14:54That I was looking for
14:55And they came in in droves
14:56It went Killer Joe
14:57Mud
14:58The True Detective
14:59Dallas Buyers
15:00Magic Mike
15:01They came in
15:02Everything I was looking for
15:03And I would not have
15:04They would not have come in
15:05If I wouldn't have unbranded
15:07For that 20 months
15:08Yes
15:09All right
15:10Now Duany you didn't have to unbrand
15:11You had enough steam going
15:12I can make whatever choice I want
15:13And I'm going to make this happen over here
15:15That was a time for me
15:16Where I had to unbrand
15:17And it took 20 months
15:18But
15:19Then I was doing
15:20And all of a sudden
15:21My work was challenging the vitality
15:22I liked
15:23I was like there we go
15:24So cool
15:25I know
15:26Absolutely
15:31And there's no thing that
15:32Every actor who wants to be successful
15:33But then you don't want to be typecast
15:35And James
15:36You know you were
15:37So good
15:38As Tommy Lee Royce
15:40In Happy Valley
15:41You had that kind of
15:42Psychotic
15:43Baddest
15:44Oh yeah
15:45Oh yeah
15:48Like
15:49Were you just offered lots of
15:51Psycho villains after that
15:52Or
15:53Or
15:54Yeah
15:55Yeah
15:56I seem to get offered roles
15:57Where they present as nice
15:59And kind of civil
16:00And then underneath they have a heart of stone
16:02And I don't know what that says about me
16:03But
16:04Yeah I mean I haven't
16:06I haven't had to rebrand
16:07Which is lovely
16:08I've been lucky
16:09I've been able to kind of twist and turns
16:11And I think that's the way you keep learning
16:12And keep it fresh
16:13That's what every actor wants
16:14And
16:15Yeah I mean the villains are also really interesting
16:18The one I'm playing right now is a beast
16:20Yes
16:21So you know I get to play
16:22And yeah
16:23But I have to say I've cited you as someone who has done it
16:27And you know now you as well Duane
16:28Like someone who has done it so elegantly
16:30You managed to go against the grain
16:32Because the producers they want their job to be done easily
16:34You know you don't want your actor to have to go on these massive transformative journeys
16:37Because it costs money and you have to get dialect coaches and everything else
16:40You want the actor to walk in as the character
16:42And actually what we want to do is go on those journeys
16:44Which you guys have just described so beautifully
16:46So yeah it's um it's a it's a tough kind of struggle
16:49Talking of returning to our role
16:51We've seen a lot of paparazzi pictures of Miss Emily Blunt recently
16:55Because you are you still filming The Devil Wears Prada 2?
16:59Yes
17:00It must be lovely to be making something that people are so excited about
17:05They are so excited about it is incredibly sweet
17:10I mean we're trying to keep as much of it under wraps as we can
17:13But it's not just the paparazzi that it's the fans outside
17:16I've never experienced this where it's just thousands of people waiting outside the sets
17:20And I think when we made the first one like we thought it was funny
17:24We were like it's really funny
17:25And then it comes out and I was a kid you know when it came out
17:30I mean it's 20 years ago
17:31And I remember my agent calling me going you know this this is the opening weekend
17:36I was like is that good like I didn't know what what was success was
17:40And and so it had this meteoric life and it's it's amazing to come back to it
17:46And because to make the second one obviously they needed the four of you you Stanley and Merrill
17:50So did the four of you have a lot of say in what the story was going to be or
17:54We did I mean I think they were very collaborative on it
17:57And you know they wanted everyone to be happy they wanted us in cahoots with them
18:02Yeah, it was it was really really cool
18:04Well, we look forward to that but before then do I urge you go see Emily and Dwayne
18:09Give extraordinary performances in the smashing machine in cinemas from October the third
18:14Very good
18:16Thank you
18:18Okay
18:20Next up Matthew McConaughey
18:22He brings us the latest offering from director Paul Greengrass
18:26It's called the lost bus and it's out now in selected cinemas
18:30Then on Apple TV plus from the third of October before we talk about it
18:34Here's some of the trail
18:36At approximately 6 30 a.m. this morning a fire entered the town of paradise
18:45Where do you need to get to?
18:47My son's up there with his grandma
18:56It's too late
18:59I'm too late as a father
19:04It's not too late
19:07It's not too late
19:15Wowza
19:19Oh my God
19:21So cool
19:23And again, this is another extraordinary true story
19:27Yeah
19:28These awful awful California wildfires in 2018
19:31And this kind of reluctant hero
19:33Tell us about Adam McKay
19:36Kevin McKay
19:37Kevin McKay, sorry
19:38In our story he's come home
19:40Because his father died
19:41And he's there to take care of his widowed mother
19:44And reconcile a relationship with his son
19:47From an earlier divorce in his life
19:49He's got a part-time job as a school bus driver
19:50On this particular day
19:53Took the kids school
19:54Dropped them off
19:55Was out and about
19:57And fires were coming across the canyon
19:59They did that
20:00It happened all the time
20:01No one even got alarmed
20:02They always the first responders head up there and put them out
20:04But on this day
20:05The winds came and the fires jumped the canyon
20:08So the first responders were stuck
20:10And while they were stuck
20:12They called it a mandatory evacuation
20:14Out of the town of paradise
20:15When that happens Kevin McKay has just made the decision
20:19I'm going to go back and get my mom and my son
20:22Who cannot drive
20:24I'm going to save them, evacuate them
20:26Not two minutes later it comes through dispatch
20:29I've got 23 kids stranded on the east side of town
20:32Does anyone on that side of town have an empty bus?
20:34Well guess who's got an empty bus?
20:36Do you pick that up and say yes?
20:40Or do you go get your mom and your son?
20:43He picked it up
20:45And he said I got him
20:47He picks him up
20:48There's a teacher with a Mary Lugwig
20:50Who's played by America Ferreira
20:52And this is the story about the next six, seven, eight hours
20:55Of what happens
20:57And you mentioned the personal side of the idea of being a dad
20:59Yeah
21:00And of course that's incredibly present in this film
21:03Because it is a family affair
21:05Yes it is
21:07Check this out
21:09I go home and pitch the script to my family
21:11As I always do
21:13Here's what it's about
21:15You know, and if it's too R-rated you got to kind of do it in a parable form
21:18The kids were old enough and told them that straight
21:21This one was about straight
21:23I get to the part about my son
21:25And my son Levi, who was 15 at the time goes, is that part cast yet?
21:29I said no, he goes, do you think I can read for it?
21:31Oh my god
21:32And I just kind of look and I go, huh
21:34Had he ever read for anything before?
21:35No
21:36So this surprises me, but I kind of just give him a shoulder and like, yeah, right
21:40He comes back the next day
21:42The next day he badgers me four times and says, okay, all right
21:44First off, sit down
21:46We're going to talk about what this acting gig is
21:48I said, this ain't modeling, this ain't no attitude
21:51All right, this is a frickin' rodeo
21:54You got to go with soul and no bullshit in your bone
21:57So he goes, well, I already got a scene worked out I want to shoot
22:00So I pulled out my camera shot and I was like, first take
22:02I was like, okay
22:04Kids got present, he was able to behave honestly in front of the camera
22:07I was like, that's for starters, you need that
22:10Did two takes, I sent it to the casting director
22:12With a note saying, I think this is good enough for a call back
22:15She writes back and says, I think it's good enough to send to the director Paul Greengrass
22:19I said, great
22:21And it dawned on me, wait a minute, do me a favor
22:23Can you pull his last name?
22:25If he gets it
22:27Is he going to have an inkling that the last name helped him?
22:31Oh, I don't want that happening
22:33So she pulled the last name, goes in his sleeve, Paul sees it
22:35Director, looks like this, this is the kid
22:37She said, well, you know, it's actually Matthew's son in real life
22:39He goes, even better!
22:41Oh, that's so cool
22:43And then, so it's lovely your son's in it, your mom's in it
22:45My mom's in it!
22:47Tell them who she plays, tell them who she plays
22:50No, she plays
22:52My mother
22:55There she is, Kate McConaughey, 93 years young
22:58Oh my gosh, she's gorgeous!
23:00No, but look at your son as well
23:02Wow
23:04So, what we're going through, Paul and I would get together every week
23:08And kind of just go over the last week
23:10How are we doing?
23:11Are we missing anything?
23:12Is there anything we want to do?
23:13Anything special?
23:14And the news was always good
23:15We were always happy with everything that was going
23:16But he said, about four weeks in
23:18He goes, I got one problem
23:19He goes, I think I miscast the mother
23:20And I either misdirected it or we got to rewrite this scene
23:23Do you know, do you have anybody idea who could play your mother?
23:26I said, let me think about it
23:28Next day he goes, what about your mom?
23:30Wow
23:31You've been making this family affair, Paul
23:32I said, hang on a second
23:33He goes, let's just cast her
23:34I said, hang on
23:35Hang on, before you just cast her
23:36Let me get her in front of you
23:37And I said, I said, mom
23:39Can you send me a minute video on your phone of why you love being a mom?
23:43She sends me an eight minute video of why she
23:46I show that to Paul
23:47He's like, yes
23:48That's her
23:50What was that conversation like when you told your mom?
23:53She was already into like, let me check with my agent
23:57Which she doesn't have
24:01She was already like, well let me think about it
24:06This is all sounding very familiar to James Norton
24:10Because your dad, has he been in every single thing you've done?
24:14Dad? Has he?
24:15My dad has been in nearly everything I've ever done
24:17Yeah
24:18I'm terrified of him watching this
24:19Because I know I'm going to get a text saying
24:20Why can't I play your dad?
24:21I want to, I want to, you know
24:22I've got my notes ready
24:24He mostly does kind of supporting background work
24:26Yeah, yeah
24:27He does a day as an essay on everything I do
24:29So here he is in the House of Guinness
24:31This is your current project
24:33Oh God
24:34There he is
24:35But we have found footage of him
24:37From War and Peace
24:38This is, it's over
24:40Is it ten years ago?
24:41More than two
24:42At least he flew himself out to Lithuania to shoot this
24:43Yeah, he flies across the world
24:45I did wonder
24:46How the hell he ended up in Lithuania to be in this
24:48So he flew himself
24:49He loves it
24:50Yeah, yeah
24:51Okay
24:52He gets a free haircut
24:53He kind of struts around the set like a peacock
24:55Gets, you know
24:57You're not in this scene
24:59But keep an eye out
25:01I'll show you
25:02James out here
25:03I mean blink and you might miss him
25:04But here we go
25:06A warm piece
25:07It's all going very well
25:08Lovely
25:09Very dramatic
25:10And look
25:11Who's that in the moustache?
25:12There you go
25:14Did he keep the moustache?
25:17Yeah
25:18He loves it
25:19Did he keep the moustache?
25:20He didn't keep the moustache
25:21No
25:22It's a new one in House of Guinness
25:23It's a new one in House of Guinness
25:24Yeah, in House of Guinness
25:25He had to throw a bottle at me
25:26And he's not the most coordinated
25:27And was it a stunt sequence
25:28And he had to throw the bottle multiple times
25:30But yeah, I know he loves it
25:31So when he comes out
25:32Is it specifically for one scene?
25:33Or does he just lurk around for many background scenes?
25:36No, no, no
25:37We make sure that he's only on for one scene
25:38I mean he would
25:39He would if he had the choice
25:40Get an agent
25:41I mean I'm terrified
25:42But has he never asked for lines?
25:44Has he never asked for lines?
25:45Has he never asked for lines?
25:46He had a line in one thing
25:47Oh, it was terrible
25:48He had a
25:49I'm sorry dad
25:50But he had a line in Lady Chatterley's Lover
25:52And I remember him
25:53It was the director said
25:55Hugh, let's give you a line
25:57And he improvised something about the state of the coal mine
26:00And he looks at me and goes
26:01What the fuck?
26:02Like how do I
26:03What is he doing here?
26:04And then it was
26:05I don't know about you
26:06But obviously your son and your mum
26:07Obviously clearly much more talented than my dad
26:08Because he was terrible
26:10And I was standing there
26:11And I'm trying to stay in character
26:12And all I have is this man going
26:13The coal is not coming up the ground
26:18Terrible
26:19Really distracting
26:20When your dad is a terrible actor
26:22And Dwayne, your mum
26:25She didn't act
26:26But she has now done some acting
26:28She has
26:29We actually
26:30So I followed in Matthew's path
26:31And I put her in
26:33I cast her in live action Moana
26:36So she's in that
26:37So cute
26:38Does she have lines?
26:39No, thank God
26:40OK
26:41You went the Norton route
26:43No, yes, that's it
26:44You've talked about her before
26:46But I love the idea of your mother
26:47She enjoys your fame very much
26:49She loves it
26:50She does
26:51She does
26:52My mum's had a tough life
26:53And she
26:54So now she's living like
26:55There she is
26:56She's just living her best life
26:58And she does
26:59She's my biggest fan
27:00And she has this crazy room
27:03That's called the Smackdown room
27:05And in the Smackdown
27:06It's just all me
27:08It's just all me
27:09Yes, everything that I've
27:11I mean, every little thing
27:13Anything you can think of
27:14She just shoves it in there
27:16And then there's your
27:17Your mum has something like that?
27:18My mum has the same room
27:19Not of you, but it's of all my stuff
27:21That would be weird
27:23That would be weird
27:24Yeah
27:25And few
27:26And few
27:27So your mum is your biggest fan?
27:28Yes, but she also
27:29And she is my biggest fan
27:30But she also is very clear to take credit
27:33For all of
27:34Wow
27:35Yes
27:36Every role I've ever played
27:37Here's what she comes up after
27:38Here's what she comes up after
27:39She goes, she goes
27:40Matt, you did so good
27:42I can tell where you got it from
27:46Very proud
27:47But we
27:48We're fine now
27:49My ship's stable enough
27:50Where I'm like
27:51Mum, say whatever you want
27:52Whatever you want
27:53Now that she's got a great agent
27:54She's good
27:55Yes, yes
27:56But also, she published a book
27:57Yes
27:58Can you remember what the name of the book was?
27:59Oh, yes
28:00Because I'm
28:01She probably
28:02Has already put a sticker
28:03Of the title of the book
28:04On my truck
28:05It's called
28:06I Amaze Myself
28:08I feel like
28:10Every book
28:11Every book
28:12Should be called
28:13I Amaze Myself
28:14No, she's a legend
28:15Chapter 26
28:16Guess what the title is?
28:18Some people deserve to be pissed on
28:29What is Christmas like in your life?
28:31Oh
28:32It's wild
28:33Is it novel?
28:34No, it's short stories
28:36I mean
28:37Some people
28:38It's probably helped out some people
28:39She's very much a
28:40Um
28:41She gets by on
28:42Positive thinking
28:43And denial
28:44And it works
28:46And she's 93
28:47And not shallow
28:48And kicking ass
28:49Talking of books
28:50Talking of books
28:51I must say
28:52After the success of your memoir
28:53Greenlights
28:54You now have a new book
28:55Poems and Prayers
28:56Yeah
28:57Number one in the New York Times
28:58We already know it's going to be
28:59On the bestseller list
29:00On Sunday Times
29:01Thank you
29:02Thank you
29:03Thank you
29:04And
29:05From what I read
29:06I read
29:07So a lot of the material in here
29:09You've been working on
29:10Off and on for years
29:11Yes
29:12So this is something you've always done
29:14Yeah, I've been writing poetry since 18
29:16Yeah
29:17Yeah
29:18And I think you're going to do one for us
29:20Maybe
29:21Yeah, I'd love to read one
29:22Have you got the book with you?
29:23Actually your mum is here
29:24She's here in her two piece bikini
29:27Ready to read
29:28Ready to pee on somebody
29:30Well you've got the book there
29:31Oh you've got the book there
29:32What this
29:33Why I wrote it
29:34And why I put it out now
29:35Um
29:36Seems to me
29:37Belief is in short supply
29:39Um
29:40Look around
29:41Turn on the news
29:42You look around
29:43Not much to believe in
29:44Or reasons to believe
29:46And
29:47That's
29:48Not going to work
29:49Because if doubt wins
29:50We're all going to lose
29:51Alright
29:52So this is me looking for belief
29:53Because I found my own self getting cynical
29:55I found my own self objectifying people
29:57And kind of thinking
29:58I guess that's just the way it is
30:00First that scared me
30:01Secondly
30:02Thankfully it pissed me off
30:03And I said no no no no
30:04I promise I'll never become a cynic
30:06It's an early death
30:07If you do that
30:08So
30:09I wrote this
30:10To dive into my own belief
30:11And I've also found a lot of people along the way going
30:13They feel kind of the same way
30:14They're looking for belief
30:15So poems and prayers
30:16Instead of looking to reality
30:17And the evidence for belief
30:18Let's look at our dreams
30:20And our aspirations
30:21And see if we can bring those back down to earth
30:23And that's why I wrote this book
30:24Um
30:25There's a bunch in there
30:26Why don't I read one that's kind of funny
30:28Okay
30:29And not that long
30:30How about that
30:31Alright it's called More Time
30:32I think it was about 2am
30:34The band played the last tune
30:36And I said amen
30:37Went to pay my tab over at the bar
30:39When the main event started tuning their guitar
30:42So I ordered myself another bottle of wine
30:45God I love it when I got more time
30:47Thought it was the year 2010
30:50Not a worrying sight in the fast lane again
30:53Signed all my checks one year tardy
30:56Cause it was 09
30:57And I hadn't left the party
30:59So happy my balance wasn't in the red
31:01God I love it when I'm early instead
31:03Met a woman I liked
31:05And she became my friend
31:07We turned into lovers
31:08And thought we'd make it until the end
31:10But as soon as we lined up hand in hand in the queue
31:13My eyes started turning a lighter shade of blue
31:16Well sometimes love just loses its shine
31:20And sometimes leaving early
31:22Just gives you more time
31:24Very good
31:26Thank you
31:28Very good
31:30Thank you
31:34Meanwhile in another part of the forest
31:36James Norton brings us a new epic historical drama
31:40House of Guinness
31:42On Netflix now
31:43And here's a taste
31:44Delicious
31:45The death of your father
31:47Has served to
31:49Poke a stick in a hornet's nest
31:51Walk away now
31:53A gift
31:54From Mr. Guinness
31:55And you're gonna start a war
31:57From a representative of the Dublin poor
31:59Children Sir Benjamin
32:02Leave behind are weak
32:03And divided
32:05Now is the time
32:06To use that weakness
32:08Freedom
32:09You think there'll be trouble today?
32:13The man's name is Guinness
32:15Of course there'll be fucking trouble
32:20There's no ponies in that
32:21No ponies
32:22Big horses
32:23Big horses
32:24Big horses
32:25And here's the thing, obviously the Guinness family who are kind of fighting for control of the brewery, they're real. Who do you play? And are you kind of
32:49Are you kind of an actual historical figure?
32:52So I'm not. I'm made up.
32:54The story is kind of the father, Benjamin Guinness, it's all true.
32:57He died in the early 1860s and he left his power vacuements,
33:02the kind of big dynasty show, the four children then take over the brewery.
33:05I play there, fixer, caretaker, kind of the four...
33:09He runs the show, he's the boss.
33:11He's called Sean Rafferty and he's a badass.
33:14Yeah, he really is a badass.
33:15It's really fun.
33:16Yeah, and it's by the same guy who wrote Peaky Blinders.
33:19It's Stephen Knight, yeah, and he is...
33:21Oh, I love Stephen Knight.
33:22Yeah, yeah, and he's firing on all cylinders.
33:25He's in his element.
33:26You can tell he had a lot of fun making it.
33:28Yeah, it's a romp, you know, it's an amazing period of history.
33:32It's when this brand, Guinness, became the biggest...
33:35I didn't realise how famous Guinness was in the 1860s.
33:39It was global already.
33:40Well, it was just...
33:41The story is the kind of the moment it exploded into North America
33:44and on the kind of coattails of the Industrial Revolution.
33:48But it's sort of...
33:49It's smoky and sexy and it's irreverent and, you know, it's...
33:53We have many names.
33:54The crown with beer.
33:56Subsession, it's been called.
33:58Did you say subsession?
34:00Subsession.
34:00I mean, there's many people who have coined it.
34:01But, yeah, it's a lot of fun.
34:02It's definitely a fun, fun romp.
34:04And when I watch something like this and, you know, you're in it
34:06and you're doing a really good Dublin accent...
34:09I got to think, when you said yes to it,
34:11did you just kind of think, I'm sure I can do that accent
34:13or did you know you could do a Dublin accent?
34:15No, I mean, I was terrified.
34:17You know, the Irish are a very...
34:19Well, you know, they're a very proud people, rightly so.
34:22They'll tell you.
34:22They will tell me.
34:23They do.
34:24They often do.
34:25Have you done press in Ireland yet?
34:26I have.
34:27You got it where you're at?
34:28It's terrifying, honestly.
34:29I sat on this couch with Jamie Dornan
34:30and he told us he got crucified by a journalist
34:33for his Irish accent.
34:34Yes.
34:34And he's Irish.
34:35I was in that movie with him.
34:36You were in that movie?
34:37And we got destroyed.
34:39Yeah, but he's Irish.
34:40I mean, I know he's...
34:41But he's from Belfast.
34:43And they told him his Irish accent was shit.
34:46So it was like...
34:46I don't know what...
34:48I don't know.
34:48It was...
34:49Anyway, but no, I listen.
34:50The accent was terrifying
34:51and I worked really hard at it
34:53because, you know, we all know actors
34:55who didn't get it right
34:56and they do get hell to account.
34:57And did you have any kind of, like...
34:59Were you given shortcuts into it?
35:01Yes, I did.
35:02I had an amazing dialect coach
35:03called Paul Mousselides
35:04who basically...
35:06Yeah, he gave me...
35:08I don't know if you've ever done this
35:09for an accent,
35:10but he gave me kind of the vowels
35:12broken down into eight sounds
35:13and then these little poems, actually.
35:15Funnily enough, I could follow...
35:16I could follow with one of the poems,
35:18but they were kind of ridiculous
35:20and I would listen to them
35:21and look kind of crazy walking around.
35:23Can you remember any of them?
35:24I remember, like, the sound
35:27I mean, I'm going to butcher it
35:28and the Irish people are going to come...
35:30No, they're not.
35:30They are.
35:31You're not on set.
35:32No, I'm not on set.
35:33It was a year and a half ago,
35:34in my defence.
35:34So, like, the sound, like,
35:35wine, light, fine Ireland,
35:38it was something like,
35:40the prime height for umpours
35:42in Ireland is five foot nine.
35:44I'm smiling now
35:45because of the fine white wine
35:47I'm drinking.
35:47It makes me feel like
35:48I'm a lion flying over a toy.
35:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:52And you do that over there.
35:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:54You still got it.
35:55You still got it.
35:57That's one of...
35:57That's cool.
35:58Yeah, that's cool.
35:59You've been there, no?
35:59As an actor, you...
36:00Like, it's very scientific.
36:02You've got to break the accent down
36:03into these times.
36:04Have you ever done an accent, Matthew?
36:05Yes.
36:06Yeah.
36:06Tim Monick is who I worked with.
36:08He's great.
36:08He's done the same things.
36:10Yeah.
36:10Yeah, you give the little limericks
36:12and you just find the, uh...
36:13Actually, the rhyme
36:15and the vowel sounds
36:16along the way
36:17and then you start...
36:18It sort of seeps in.
36:19And, uh, James Norton,
36:21this is a, you know,
36:22it's a big action, uh, series,
36:25a big action role for you
36:26and, you know,
36:27and we've had fighting,
36:28we've had fires.
36:30You bring us explosions.
36:32I do.
36:32Now, have you ever had to do
36:34walking away from an explosion before?
36:36So pleased we can get to talk with...
36:38Yeah, so we have...
36:39No.
36:40You...
36:40You have.
36:41I know you have
36:41because there is a song...
36:43So we were shooting this scene
36:44in Liverpool
36:45and Sean Rafferty,
36:47my role was made very easy
36:48because all I had to do
36:49was sort of strut
36:50and smoke cigarettes
36:51and look kind of cool
36:52and so one of these scenes
36:54I was walking away
36:55from an explosion
36:55and my business partner
36:56and my dear, dear best friend,
36:58she texts me
36:58in the middle of this scene.
37:00She said,
37:00have you seen
37:01Cool Guys Don't Look Back
37:02at Explosions?
37:03The Lonely Island guys.
37:04Have you seen it?
37:05Yes.
37:05The Andy Sandberg,
37:06which you were in.
37:07It's a song
37:07and he's cut together.
37:08It's so good.
37:09He's cut together
37:10all the actors and actresses
37:11over the time in Hollywood
37:13who have walked away
37:13from an explosion
37:14and not turned back.
37:15You can't turn back.
37:16You can't turn back.
37:17But you are my inspiration.
37:18Oh, cool.
37:19This is what,
37:20actually in the series,
37:21this is Sean Rafferty
37:23walking away
37:24from an explosion.
37:25I'm not afraid
37:25of a bit of progress.
37:29Wait for it.
37:29Oh, there you go.
37:30But then I do look back.
37:31Do I not?
37:32No, you don't.
37:33No, no, no.
37:35So cool.
37:35So the rules,
37:36Bernie, are you don't look back.
37:38That's a rule.
37:38You don't look back.
37:39Yeah.
37:39And I suppose the other thing
37:40would be you wouldn't look
37:41sort of pleased with yourself
37:42for walking away
37:43from an explosion.
37:44Oh, no.
37:44No, don't look back.
37:45Don't look pleased.
37:46Don't look back.
37:47Don't look back.
37:47Stone cold straight faces.
37:49Stone cold straight faces.
37:50Yeah, like, this is what I do
37:51kind of thing.
37:52But by the way,
37:53you're a producer.
37:53Make it happen.
37:54Yeah.
37:54I wasn't a producer on this,
37:55but I didn't know what you're about.
37:56Yeah.
37:56So this is a slightly longer take.
38:00This is from behind the scenes
38:02of Sean Rafferty walking away
38:04from the explosion.
38:05Oh.
38:06So here he goes.
38:07So there's the explosion.
38:09Not looking back.
38:09Oh, he looked back.
38:11At least he hasn't looked
38:13pleased with himself at all.
38:14All right, it's time for music.
38:27The seven-time Brit Award-winning,
38:29Grammy-nominated artist
38:30first set the world alight
38:31with her debut album,
38:33My 21st Century Blues.
38:34Here performing
38:35her newly released single,
38:37Where Is My Husband?
38:38It's Rage.
38:40I would like a baby.
38:46I would like a ring.
38:47I would like a diamond ring
38:48on my wedding finger.
38:49I would like a big and shiny diamond.
38:51I could wave around
38:52and talk and talk about it.
38:53And when the day has ever
38:54given me God
38:55that I could ever doubt it.
38:57Till death I do, I do, I.
38:59This man is testing me.
39:02Oh, oh, oh, oh, help me.
39:05Baby, what a land is my husband.
39:08What a taking on the summer
39:10I'm alone to find me.
39:13Oh, baby.
39:15What a hell is my love
39:16getting down with another?
39:18Oh, yeah, yeah.
39:20Tell him if you see him, baby.
39:21He should have.
39:23Why is this beautiful man
39:24waiting for me to get over?
39:26He already testing my patience.
39:28I only think I'm taking time
39:29with other women that ain't me.
39:30Well, I've been reviewing applications.
39:32Till I got my limbs on it,
39:33when I tell him I'll to follow.
39:35He kept me waiting, anticipating.
39:37Bring to the love,
39:38to give him to my loving heart.
39:39Tell him I'm for you.
39:40He'll see, he'll see,
39:42He'll see, he'll see,
39:43see, see, see, see.
39:44How my heart can fall.
39:48Is he okay?
39:49Is he okay?
39:49Is he, is he okay?
39:52This man is testing me.
39:53Uh-huh, uh-huh.
39:54Help me.
39:55I need you to tell me, baby.
39:58What a land is my husband.
40:00What is he getting in so long
40:02to find me?
40:04Baby, oh baby
40:05Where the hell is my love?
40:08Getting down with another
40:10Tell me if you see him, baby
40:13He should hide
40:15I'm doing many acrobatics
40:16I'm sipping my dress at 2am
40:18And I'm tired of living like this
40:19He must be out of getting ready
40:20Trying to fix up his tire
40:21Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh
40:22This way your wife is
40:23Till I got your heart going
40:25Am I turning out too foul much?
40:27I'm gonna love you
40:27No one above you
40:28Pray to the doctor
40:30Hurry, hurry you alone
40:31Baby, I ain't telling you about you
40:32Is he, he, he, he, he
40:36Oh, my heart can smoke now
40:39Is he far away?
40:42Is he okay?
40:44This man is testing me
40:45Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh
40:46Help me
40:47Help me, help me, Lord
40:47I need you to tell me, baby
40:49Where the hell is my love?
40:52Would have taken him so long
40:53To find me, he, he, he, oh
40:57Where the hell is my love?
41:00Getting down with another
41:01Tell him if you see him, baby
41:04Tell him I'm, mm, tell him I'm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm
41:10Tell him I'm kind
41:11Tell him I got brown eyes and a grown fit
41:13If he doesn't find me now, I'm gonna die
41:15I'm so kidding
41:16I'm my, my, my, my, my
41:17Oh, my, my, my, my, my

41:23It's like a diamond ring
41:24I'ma wear the finger
41:25I'ma look like a big and shiny diamond
41:26I'ma look around and talk
41:27I'ma talk about it
41:28One day, it's gonna give me all that I could have without it
41:31To never do it
41:32Do I do I
41:33Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
41:34This man is testing me
41:34Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh
41:36To help me
41:36Oh, my, my, my, my, my, my
41:38Oh, my, my baby
41:39Where the hell is my husband?
41:41What's taking him so low to find me?
41:45You're my, my, my, my, my
41:47Baby
41:47Where the hell is my lava?
41:50Getting down with another
41:51Tell him that my grandma said it
41:54Tell him that my grandma said it
41:55Your husband is kind
41:57Oh
42:27Oh
42:57Hey
42:59First of all, thank you for that amazing performance
43:03It's a standing-up dress
43:07That I know you put on a show. Thank you so much
43:10Just terrific. I know and also I'm gonna say just congratulations on everything that's happened to you since the last time you were on the show
43:16I mean broke records of the Brits form to the Grammys the Oscars. It's phenomenal. I'm so happy
43:27Can I ask a question on that?
43:29With all your success
43:32Did you lean into being more you?
43:34Definitely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, like that right there is me
43:41That is the the new single that's out now where is my husband and that voice we heard at the end
43:47Yes, it's true. That's your granny. It's my grandma. Yes. Oh
43:51Picked it up. This is this right at the end of the track. Your husband is coming. Come on grandma
43:57Oh
43:59That's my best friend
44:01She's my best friend. I call that lady every night. We pray together. We talk about life together. That's my rock pun intended
44:09You know I sang your song today on the radio. You did? Yeah, Greg James
44:14I sang it I like it was a challenge to me like the rap portion because you know
44:18There's like a like a rhythm to it
44:20Yes
44:22It was crazy. Yes
44:24I know I butchered it
44:26It was terrible
44:28I'll tell her it was terrible
44:30I did so congratulations
44:32on everything
44:34I would love to get that footage
44:38That is the new single and it's it's going to be on the new album
44:42Yes, that when
44:45So you can pre-order it
44:47Great
44:48Pre-order it but it's just not done at all like at all
44:53I'm an independent artist right you've got to get ahead of these things
44:56Okay, we put it out there. I've kind of given myself a rough deadline. I would like to say the first third of next year
45:02Definitely the first half of next year
45:05Okay, so I
45:08This is not what I thought
45:09Sorry
45:10I thought it was kind of like done you were just doing a little polishing
45:12Oh no, no
45:14Yeah, maybe add some
45:15Add some horns to that
45:17No, not at all
45:18Okay
45:19So are you writing it right now?
45:20I am, yeah
45:21So it's a beautiful process but it does take time and I
45:26Yeah
45:27Yeah, I had to do where is my husband eight days before it come out. I mean so I'm combing away at it chipping away
45:34No, this could be better. We should add this
45:37Yeah, when you're writing do you sleep or are you just always churning with it?
45:41No, you need rest being tired in the studio is the worst
45:44Yeah, yeah, you need to be on you need to be present and I think it's kind of like imagining your guys crafts
45:50You know when your your heart starts beating and you just feel like this adrenaline goes and you're like I'm where I need to be right now
45:55I need to chase this feeling. It's that feeling, you know, yeah being tired in the studio. Yes. Your songs are gonna suck
46:03Finishing the album. Tell me this does the album at least of a name
46:08Not really kind of kind of kind of what is it kind of
46:12What is it kind of
46:21Kind of is the title right now. Oh nice. Yeah, it's kind of yeah, actually so if Matthew McConaughey says it. Yeah, I need one of them
46:27You know they do quotes of like, you know, it's just like Matthew McConaughey kind of
46:30Yeah, but look well the one thing we do know is you are going on tour. Yes. Yes, you are and when does that kick off next year and

48:10I didn't just look at the woman and go, looks like an absolutely to me.
48:14Abby's too short, it feels rude.
48:17This is such a real moment.
