Transcript
00:00This is Tim Waspuk from Best Track Concert TV.
00:29I'm here in Austin for Fantastic Fest.
00:46The mighty Deathstalker!
00:54When you're doing something like Deathstalker, it's about knowing the tone.
00:58So it's making it modern enough, but making it also old school sort of stuff.
01:04Can you talk about finding the voice of this guy?
01:07Because everybody has a visual of who this guy should be.
01:11You know, it's funny, but I always go away from myself.
01:17I go to my director.
01:19You know, we have this incredible guy, Steven Kostansky, who's supposed to be here right now, but unfortunately his plane got delayed.
01:26I love that man.
01:27He is un-freaking-believable.
01:30He has a vision.
01:32He makes the movie.
01:34He makes exactly the movie he wants to make.
01:37This whole movie is Steven.
01:39There's nobody telling him what to do.
01:41He does what he wants to do.
01:43100%.
01:44And I was very honored when I got the call.
01:47Oh, this is so funny.
01:50Wow.
01:51This has two heads.
01:52And I was just about to talk about something.
01:53Two heads.
01:54I got a call.
01:57My buddy, Michael, who was the producer of the film, called me up and he goes,
02:01Hey, listen, we're making this remake of Deathstalker and the director really wants you.
02:05And I'm like, Oh, great.
02:06Let's talk to him.
02:07Steven calls me.
02:08We have this conversation and we hit it off immediately.
02:11He goes, Hey, how do you feel about playing Deathstalker?
02:14And I was like, Oh my God, I'm a fan.
02:15I love it.
02:16Of course I'm in.
02:17So you knew of it?
02:18Of course I did.
02:19Yeah.
02:20And you know, it was a direct offer.
02:21I mean, he offered me the part and there was nobody else.
02:24I was the first and only choice because he loved, he loved my background, Bloodsport
02:31and Mortal Kombat Conquest.
02:32Yeah.
02:33So he was a fan when he was a kid.
02:34He watched my TV show.
02:35Cool.
02:36And so I was like, come on, this is amazing.
02:39And then he pitched me his idea, everything practical monsters.
02:42You'll be fighting monsters.
02:43You'll be riding on horses.
02:45You do sword fighting.
02:46I'm like, come on.
02:47I'm in.
02:48Who is it?
02:52The save is once a night before the war against the Dreadites.
03:07Surgeon with a sword.
03:12Oh wow.
03:14The tone, you're asking about the tone.
03:20I come in as an actor.
03:22Yeah.
03:23I do my preparation.
03:24Yeah.
03:25But the director, in the end, it's his movie.
03:28The tone, the look, that's him.
03:31But the relationship between you and my doodad, that's the different thing.
03:36I'd like you to bring that in.
03:37Yeah.
03:38So of course, again, it starts on the page.
03:42And Steven wrote the script and he did an amazing job on the script.
03:46So that relationship, it starts on the script, which I take over.
03:50I do my preparation.
03:52I play with it.
03:53And then there's actually two things I want to talk about.
03:56I have a very close friend, Bob Odenkirk, who I did Nobody With.
03:59And Bob and I, we get along great and he's a friend and he loves my career and he's always
04:04very supportive.
04:05And he goes, all right, Daniel, so you're playing Deathstalker.
04:07Give me the script.
04:08I'm going to give you something.
04:09I'm going to tell you what I think.
04:11So he reads the script, the beginning of the script, and he calls me and he goes, Daniel,
04:17this is awesome.
04:19People love those kind of movies.
04:21Here's the hook.
04:22Do not play the joke.
04:24This is played like a real world.
04:27This is a real world and you've got to be real in that world.
04:30Don't play the joke.
04:31Don't try to be funny.
04:32And that was the best advice I could get.
04:34Come and get it.
04:37The mighty Deathstalker!
04:42You know what's weird?
04:43He said this.
04:44I saw him a week ago for Normal.
04:46Oh, you did?
04:47Yeah, I saw Normal at the TIFF.
04:48And the thing is, that's the first thing Bob said.
04:50He's like, look.
04:51The thing is that the action later doesn't make, you're not going to feel for him unless you see the crap that he goes through in his normal day to day life.
05:02Once you see that, he's like, just like nobody.
05:04Yeah.
05:05That makes you go, okay.
05:06Yeah.
05:07I can empathize.
05:08And Bob is just amazing.
05:09That helped me so much with this.
05:10I think since I've known Bob, you know, I trained him for Nobody, one and two, and also played with him, fought with him.
05:18He's an amazing guy.
05:19I just, I'm going to see him when I get back to LA.
05:21And then the second thing, it was in the script, do that is male, right?
05:26Yeah.
05:27Yeah.
05:28Yeah.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Yeah.
05:31Yeah.
05:32Yeah.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Yeah.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Yeah.
05:37Yeah.
05:38Yeah.
05:39Yeah.
05:40Yeah.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Yeah.
05:43Yeah.
05:44Yeah.
05:45Yeah.
05:46Yeah.
05:47Yeah.
05:48And when we played it, a Lori who play, who actually played the character physically is female, which I have to say, change the dynamic for me.
06:03Wow.
06:04Think about it.
06:05Yeah.
06:06So it changed.
06:07I'm a gentleman, you know, I'm a man and she's a woman.
06:10And I think if I would have had a man playing opposite me, I would have been probably a little harder, a little tougher. But I think having a female, I was maybe a little more vulnerable.
06:24In your reaction?
06:25In my reaction, a little softer.
06:26Wow.
06:27So I think that was really interesting. And then in the end it was chosen, you know, Patton played the voice and he did an amazing job. I mean, he elevated it big time.
06:37It was a Duskoset.
06:38The answer's to only one name.
06:43Aye.
06:47What name would that be?
06:49Deathstalker
07:09My old friend
07:12Come and get it
