00:00the culture. NBA legends Gary Payton and Tim Hardaway Sr. are here to talk about rivalries, fatherhood, and the past, present, and future of the NBA. We explain why more people need to be watching HBCU football, and a new league is coming for some of the WNBA's biggest stars, and they're offering some big money. What city is getting a new NBA team, and have international players caught up or surpassed American athletes? All this and more, this is 106 and Sport.
00:30Welcome, everybody, to 106 and Sport. Look, it is the day before Thanksgiving, so we're doing things a little different. We're doing it family style, so I'm hanging out in the audience, but I'm hanging out with the lit side of the audience.
00:56Yes, the real lit side, for sure. Don't worry about it. Watch this. Watch this. Watch this.
01:07Because I'm going to prove that this is the littest, most livest side.
01:13When I say aww, you say boo. You ready?
01:17Aww!
01:20You know what? I gotta say it. I gotta say it. I gotta say it.
01:25You know what?
01:27Go!
01:29Oh!
01:30That's cute, but right now, we're going to get this show started, so let's go this way.
01:34We ain't gotta worry about much. We got security over there. You hear that?
01:46Honey mustard security.
01:48Wow, yeah. How much you bench?
01:51He said, you? Watch out now. Watch out now.
01:55He said, Thanksgiving, he said, you just give me a whole plate of Ashley, and I'll be straight. You feel what I'm saying?
02:02We're counting down the top five moments in sports that matter to what? The culture.
02:07Yes, and like we said, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so let's take a look at some of this week's highlights.
02:14First up, Beyonce and Jay-Z pulled up to the F1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas.
02:18That's Formula 1, the global racing series with cars that go up to 200 miles an hour, and B got a hot lap with Lewis Hamilton, making the race feel like a full-on celebrity event.
02:31Meanwhile, in the NFL, the Chiefs rallied to beat the Colts 23-20 thanks to Harrison Bucker's game-winning field goal in overtime.
02:39As Shadur said, it's won his Browns debut, throwing for 209 yards and a touchdown, and it went over the Raiders, 24-10. Shout out to Shadur.
02:51We're going to jump into number five on the countdown.
02:57Number five on our countdown is all about our favorite topic, and that is HBCUs.
03:02Every Thanksgiving, the classics take over.
03:05Absolutely. HBCU football isn't just a tradition. It's entertainment.
03:09The energy, the music, the culture.
03:11And two of the biggest games of the year happened.
03:14The Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Turkey Day Classic, and the Bayou Classic.
03:19Now, granted, NBC Sports has media rights to the Bayou Classic through 2027, but that's just one of the few televised games.
03:27Networks still air random games between losing teams instead of other HBCU games with history, talent, and a halftime show better than most bowl games.
03:37But I want to ask this question.
03:40What needs to happen to get more eyes on HBCUs?
03:43Yeah, I mean, okay, Kim, so let's get into it.
03:46I mean, in your opinion, what is holding back the coverage?
03:49Is it marketing? Is it the perception of HBCUs, the type of talent that HBCU collegiate teams possess or don't possess?
03:58Where is the disconnect here?
04:00The disconnect is this.
04:02You got some teams like the Auburn and Alabama game that everybody going to be locked in for.
04:08Mm-hmm.
04:09You got the Michigans and Ohio States.
04:11And this year, this year, we're actually going to have a game like no other.
04:19The Georgia Tech and Georgia game?
04:21Yeah, it'll be big.
04:23You feel what I'm saying?
04:25But all them other ones, man, y'all can miss me with that.
04:29It's because, like, I find myself so oftentimes watching games that are irrelevant.
04:37Okay.
04:38Respectfully.
04:38Irrelevant in what sense?
04:40Entertainment irrelevant.
04:41It's like, that's a losing team, that's a losing team.
04:44But I might as well see something that's entertaining that impacts the culture.
04:48Because this is the thing.
04:49The reason why you became a Dallas Cowboy fan in more ways than one...
04:55I heard that, boo.
04:56Hold on to it.
04:57It's okay.
04:59The reason why you became a Dallas Cowboy fan is because the Dallas Cowboys were on TV a lot.
05:05Of course.
05:06Well, that's the reason my dad became a Cowboys fan.
05:08For sure.
05:08Which then trickled down to me.
05:09For sure.
05:10Now, what I would say is I would challenge any individual that were to experience the HBCU culture.
05:18Because everybody in my family went to an HBCU.
05:21Now, I did witness the Auburn-Alabama game.
05:26Which is an insane atmosphere.
05:28Insane.
05:28Incredible.
05:29Yes.
05:29But at the same time, for those other HBCU things, and when you walk into the airport and you see, you know, a Howard sweatshirt or a TSU sweatshirt or my parents met at Savannah State.
05:42When you see those type of things, it's an alliance and an allegiance that matches nothing.
05:48You know what I'm saying?
05:49For sure.
05:49So, for that, for the TV rights, I just challenge the networks to really give opportunities to HBCUs because it's worth the watch.
05:57I mean, football, Thanksgiving.
06:00It makes sense with an S, but we need y'all to make it make sense with a C.
06:08Don't let that fly over your head.
06:10Don't let that fly over your head.
06:11Don't let that fly over your head.
06:13Please don't.
06:13Well done.
06:13Very clever.
06:14Very clever.
06:14Okay.
06:14One thing that you got to do on Thanksgiving is you got to eat.
06:19I know.
06:19That's right.
06:20Look.
06:20Huh?
06:20But because this is 106 in sports, we're going to do it our way.
06:26It is time for the Thanksgiving Fantasy Draft.
06:38Okay.
06:38So, here's what we're going to do.
06:40Just like the NBA and just like the NFL, we're going to have ourselves a little draft.
06:43You know a thing or two about the NFL draft.
06:45Yeah.
06:46So, but instead of drafting players, Cam, we're going to be drafting Thanksgiving food.
06:51Okay.
06:52All right.
06:52So, here's how it's going to work.
06:54Look at this.
06:54We've got the board here.
06:55We're going to take turns going back and forth until each of us has picked five items.
07:01Then, the live-est audience is going to decide whose house or whose table they want to eat at.
07:08Okay.
07:09All right.
07:10Ladies first.
07:10Yes.
07:11Go right ahead.
07:12Go right ahead.
07:13I'm just going to go ahead and take mac and cheese off the board.
07:18Let's go, Cam.
07:19And with the first pick, the Cam Newton Eaters, oh, decides to go with vegetarian stuffing.
07:30Already lost.
07:33Okay.
07:34Okay.
07:36Okay.
07:36Um, I'm going to take, along with my mac and cheese, I'm going to go with the turkey.
07:45Okay.
07:46Okay.
07:47I don't eat pork.
07:48That's the only reason.
07:49Okay.
07:49Okay.
07:49Okay.
07:50Uh, we're going to go with the yams.
07:53I'm going to go with the yams on the plate and in the bed.
08:16I'm going to go with the yams on the plate.
08:17I'm going to go with the yams on the plate.
08:21Okay.
08:22Okay.
08:23Um, well, with the third pick in my draft, I'm going to go and take the greens.
08:30Okay.
08:31Um, with the third pick, we're going to go with cranberry sauce with our stuffing.
08:41Um, ladies and gentlemen, with the fourth pick in the 2025 Thanksgiving Drak, Ashley selects
08:53the cornbread.
09:00Cam Newton's Eaters goes with the rice.
09:05Okay, that sounds lovely.
09:12Okay.
09:14My final pick in the 2025 Thanksgiving Drak will be sweet potato pie.
09:28Thank you very much.
09:30Thank you very much.
09:35With the fifth and final pick of the 2025 Thanksgiving fantasy draft, Cam Newton's Eaters decides to
09:54go rob Ashley's house for her mac and cheese.
09:59You know what I'm saying?
10:00We're going to take the mac and cheese.
10:02We're going to take the mac and cheese.
10:06We're going to take the mac and cheese.
10:07You can't get a bomb.
10:08We're going to take it.
10:09Thank you very much.
10:11Put your mind going.
10:12Um- well, are you forfeiting your final pick?
10:15No.
10:16Auntie.
10:17Listen, listen.
10:18You got pumpkin pie left.
10:19Listen.
10:20You got pumpkin pie left.
10:21We got a pumpkin pie left.
10:23You can draft the pumpkin pie.
10:25Baby girl you must understand this. I don't know who need to tell her
10:32But I'm going to tell her that we don't eat no pumpkin pie
10:40Potato pie, and I was not gonna disrespect my team
10:45By bringing in some pumpkin pie
10:55I just want I just want the record to show that Ashley's Thanksgiving we're gonna have turkey
11:06Greens mac and cheese cornbread and sweet potato pie
11:18We are also going to have a plethora
11:21My security is right here because he's gonna try to rob us
11:34I'm gonna just tell you like this. Yeah, if y'all want to go to Ashley house for Thanksgiving make some noise
11:41Oh
11:50Okay, okay, okay, okay
11:53If y'all want to go to Cam's house for Thanksgiving make some noise
12:00Don't worry about it. I have y'all know
12:02I
12:04Have y'all know that if you decided to go
12:10To Ashley Nicole Moss's house for Thanksgiving and her dinner selections
12:14She's gonna have the veggies and the proteins. They didn't give me no beans. We would have lentils
12:23Worse and worse
12:25That's all
12:26Lentils, that's all right. Okay, we got big on Kennedy in the building
12:30Two legendary NBA Hall of Famers are coming up Gary Payton and
12:35Tim Hardaway Sr. are here plus are the Grizzlies heading to Vegas
12:40Make sure you don't move this is
12:43To see who's up next in the world of sports go to bet.com for our next up series presented by Jeep Grand Cherokee
12:51Welcome back everybody to 106 in sports where culture meets the game
13:02We are still counting down our top five moments feeding the culture
13:07But before that, uh, we have a very special guest in the building. You ready for our first guest of the show?
13:13Yeah
13:15Yeah, here we go. He's a true legend of the game one of the toughest defenders and biggest smack talkers in
13:22NBA league history
13:24He is also a Hall of Famer an NBA and two-time Olympic champion the first point guard ever to win the DP
13:33Oh, why that is defensive player of the year? Please everybody welcome NBA great Gary Payton
13:43Oh
13:57Well, oh, she came in here like this, but hey, come on
14:02But he's smooth with it, ain't he? Do I need to sit in between y'all and let the Holy Ghost get through Lord Jesus
14:08Hey, wait, first of all, let me tell you all about that little segment y'all just did with that food
14:13Give it to him. Give it to him. Touch me
14:15Man, I'm gonna give y'all a picture of my food, man. You're a vegetarian, you don't eat pork, right?
14:19Yes
14:20But that wasn't happening in the day, man. We was gonna have them yams, cabbage
14:24Yeah
14:25That's how we was rolling, you know? We made a salad
14:27We had about nine different things that you can bing, bing, bing, bing
14:30Not the bing, bing, bing, bing
14:32You know what I'm saying? Bro, you had to bing, bing, bing it, man, you know what I'm saying?
14:36Yeah
14:37Listen, when we intro'd you, we gave a list of accolades, but we also mentioned you were one of the best trash talkers in NBA history
14:45Is the trash talk something that still happens over Thanksgiving?
14:48No, I'm a grown man and a parent now, you know what I'm saying? I got them little grandbabies running around so I can't talk all that mess
14:56Well, y'all said that the devil's still lying in 2025
15:00Because the people wanna know
15:02What was you and Kevin Durant talking about on the little docu-series, you know what I'm saying?
15:09Like you was putting it together, brother
15:11But Cam, I ain't no punk
15:12Hello
15:13I'm still gonna say something, you know what I'm saying?
15:15He said he up here, then I said I'm on the roof
15:17You know what I'm saying?
15:18Which I am on the roof, you feel me?
15:21Yeah, but we had a little fun, you know?
15:24Right
15:25You know, and that's what we had to do
15:26We had a fun during the game and he took it to the level and then I took it to another level
15:30He took it to another and then we kept on
15:32Cool
15:33Do you think that Kevin Durant gets a bad rep because he is someone who likes to clap back?
15:37Do you think that people will misunderstand him?
15:39I think he's just like, uh, Kobe
15:42He was just misunderstood
15:44He's a guy who's gonna fire back at you
15:46He's gonna do the things that he has to do
15:48And I just think sometime you gotta tone it down
15:51I don't think KD is wrong about nothing he does
15:54Yeah
15:55As long as you can back it up
15:56That's why I talked a lot of smack, a lot of trash on the court
15:59Cause couldn't nobody deal with me on the basketball court
16:02I wanna ask you in this facet because a lot of times everybody always says
16:08This person could not play in this day and age
16:12I want you to identify the players that's in the league right now
16:18That could be successful when you were playing in the NBA
16:23I think KD could have played in my era
16:26I think LeBron could have played in my era
16:29I think Steph could have played in that era
16:31He would have got beat up a little bit but he could have been almost like an Allen Iverson
16:35Yeah
16:36You know running around
16:37And he runs alone
16:38Doing things like that
16:39I think they would have been different to adjust to our era
16:41Because we had a lot of rules
16:42They're more up and down the floor
16:44Yeah
16:45But everybody can adjust
16:46We were blessed a couple years ago to see the documentary The Last Dance
16:52And you were on record for making a message to MJ
16:58Those type of battles
17:01What were they like for you to be an individual that had to face a guy like Michael Jordan?
17:06Great
17:07Cause I wanted to play him everyday
17:09I wanted to play everybody everyday
17:11I don't run away from nobody
17:13When Mike played me in the finals
17:15And every time he played me
17:17I wanted all that smoke
17:19But you gotta understand he had to come back and guard me too
17:21So everybody said they have dogs
17:24My daddy raised a wolf
17:27I eat dogs
17:28Jerry West said that
17:29One of my favorite quotes he ever said
17:31Well we're gonna continue to pick Gary's brain as we dive into the number 4 story on our countdown
17:37And it's all about relocation
17:39There's a lot of talk around the league that the Pelicans and the Grizzlies could be the next NBA teams that's on the move
17:46Both franchises have expiring arena deals and reports say low attendance and money trouble could open the door for relocation
17:55When a team leaves, a city loses more than fans
17:58It's pride, jobs, and identity
18:01We've seen it before in Cleveland after LeBron left
18:04And Gary, we saw it in Seattle when your Sonics became the OKC Thunder
18:09People often times forget the humanistic side of being an athlete
18:16Can you talk to us about any type of relocation from either a trade
18:21Or in a situation where a whole team just pack up and leave and go to another city?
18:25It's hard to take a team away from a city
18:29I don't care what nobody says
18:31That breaks its people heart, it breaks fans heart
18:34And it broke our hearts from Seattle
18:36And it's going on almost 18 years that we haven't had a team
18:40And we want our team back
18:41And we're pushing for that
18:43Moving Memphis and the Pelicans will be the wrong move
18:46But I think we need to have new franchise come in
18:49And we can build it up from there
18:51So it's not necessarily about relocation, it's about expansion
18:54Yeah
18:55Because I think most people will remember the last players the Supersonics drafted
18:58It was Kevin Durant and Westbrook
18:59Westbrook
19:00Right, and then they became the Oklahoma City Thunder
19:02So can you walk me through that moment when you found out that the Supersonics
19:07Were no longer going to be the Seattle Supersonics
19:09Because I'm interested from your vantage point what that was like
19:13It was devastating
19:14Because what I had heard is that we had the team to stay
19:20And then all of a sudden, boom, they announced it
19:24That's devastating to see a team that I played for 13 years
19:27We still talk about the Seattle Supersonics of today
19:31Yeah
19:32And I'm still being a big part of it to get it back to our Seattle
19:36So how close are we?
19:38Because we've heard Kevin Durant talk about it
19:40We've heard Adam Silver talk about it
19:42At one point we heard, rest in peace, David Stern talk about it
19:45But how close are we to actually getting the Supersonics back in Seattle?
19:49Very close
19:50We got everything
19:51We got the Seahawks
19:52We got the Mariners
19:53We got the Storm
19:54We got the Storm
19:55We got everything
19:56Got the NHL
19:57We got everything
19:58I think it's close
20:00Very, very close
20:01We like that
20:02Go ahead, yeah, clap it up for the Supersonics for real
20:04That would be amazing
20:06Kevin Durant gets his jersey retired in the rafters before he hangs it up
20:10But would it be
20:11It was the team that drafted him
20:13It wasn't his fault that it became the Thunder
20:15Well, we got to go with Sean Kemp
20:17That's all I'm saying
20:18There's a lot of people
20:19But I'm saying
20:20I'm not going to even say myself
20:21I'm just going to be all good to say
20:22Of course
20:23I'll do that last
20:24I do think it would be cool for him to sign a one day contract
20:27And go back to the team that introduced him to the NBA
20:30And let me tell you, I think that's what he's really waiting for
20:33He wants to do that
20:34I think my son is born and raised from there
20:37Yeah
20:38He wants to go back there
20:39A lot of people want to play for Seattle
20:41And I think that's why
20:42The reason that it should come back
20:44And it will be back
20:45Well, look
20:46Your lips to God's ears
20:48That soon enough
20:49We will be seeing the Seattle Supersonics
20:52Back on our NBA schedules
20:54Look, the legendary Gary Payton is not going anywhere
20:57He's coming back later in the show
20:58So don't move
20:59Because Tim Hardaway Sr. is in the building
21:02Plus the countdown continues
21:04This is 106 in Sports
21:06Welcome back everybody to 106 in Sports
21:07Where culture meets the game
21:19It's almost time for us to get into the number 3 on our countdown
21:23But before that, you guys ready for our next guest?
21:26He's one of the coldest point guards to ever do it
21:29He's one of the coldest point guards to ever do it
21:31A five-time All-Star and Hall of Famer
21:34Who changed the game with his own crossover
21:37Ooh, the creator of the killer crossover
21:40A Miami Heat legend
21:42An Olympic gold medalist
21:44And he's one of the few whose moves still get copied by players today
21:50Everybody, please welcome NBA icon Tim Hardaway Sr.
21:55How are you?
21:56I'm good
21:57I'm good
21:58I'm good
21:59I'm good
22:00I'm good
22:01I'm good
22:02Hello, hello, welcome
22:03Thank you
22:04Thank you
22:05Come on in
22:06You got your seat, your seat, yeah
22:07Right here
22:08Like how did you come up with the move?
22:09Let's just, let's start with that
22:10Because like nowadays there's been so many hesies and different forms of crossing over
22:25Mm-hmm
22:30But you were the originator of the crossover
22:35Yeah, you know, I grew up in Chicago and I patterned my game after Isaiah Thomas
22:40Mm-hmm
22:41And we used to have, like on the concrete, if you dribble outside of the concrete on the grass, you was out of bounds
22:48So you had to get the ball up, so you had to stay in a box, so it was a tight box where you had to stay in
22:54And when kids tell me, ah, I can't go and work on my game by myself, that's insulting my intelligence
23:01Wow
23:02Because I went downstairs, you know, it's snowing outside, it's two degrees outside, there's nowhere to go
23:08And I used to go downstairs and visualize playing a basketball game, downstairs with a ball, two beams, a eight foot tall ceiling, and two walls
23:20I used to pass off the wall and just come down and do crossover moves, in and out moves, behind the back move
23:25And just visualize playing against guys that people thought that was better than me
23:31Mm-hmm
23:32So when I went out and played basketball, it was easy, dribbling was easy
23:36Other, you know, the game just was easy to me, because I worked at it for an hour, hour and a half, downstairs
23:42Yeah
23:43And you know, so when kids tell me, I can't work on my game by myself, that's insulting my intelligence, because that's what I did
23:49Right
23:50When we were kind of talking about it, and we were talking about you, we said we see a lot of you in so many different players
23:56Just aspects of your game, whether it's your ball handling, whether it's the crossover, whether it's just your tenacity
24:03Who's a player that you see so much of yourself in, and you can't name your son?
24:09You know, Darius Garland, from Cleveland Cavaliers, Kay Cunningham
24:15Who's having a phenomenal season right now
24:17Yes, Kay Cunningham is having a phenomenal season right now
24:20Yeah, for sure
24:21How are you feeling about his development as a player?
24:24So Kay Cunningham, first of all, he's healthy
24:26Right
24:27You know, these past two years, he's been healthy
24:30And the coaching staff, bigger staff, he's put the ball in Kay's hand
24:34He's saying, look, run my team the way you did at Oklahoma State, because you was number one pick here with the Detroit Pistons
24:40So you come here, you run a team like you're supposed to run it, and he's just taking off
24:45He put the team on his back last year
24:47For you in basketball, what is the biggest issue that you have with fundamentals or the game from the younger generation?
24:55They don't work on their craft, they don't work on their game
24:58You know, we used to play one-on-one
24:59For sure
25:00You know, Gary Payton and I, it's a funny story
25:02We went to the same recruiting trip at Texas El Paso
25:09Wow
25:10UTEP
25:11UTEP
25:12And we was playing whole court, me and Gary
25:15And after practice, me and him was playing
25:18And they was like, where Tim and Gary at?
25:20Yeah
25:21They had to come back down there and get us
25:22And they thought we was coming back up
25:24We kept playing for another 30 minutes
25:26Wow
25:27They had to come take the ball from us
25:28Rip it from you
25:29Rip it
25:30That's how competitive we are
25:32I don't think these kids play one-on-one
25:34And when they do play one-on-one, it's a camera phone
25:37Everywhere is a camera phone
25:39And everybody wanna show this on social media, show that on social media
25:43They don't wanna get embarrassed
25:45Either you're gonna get embarrassed in front of 20,000 people
25:49Or you're gonna get embarrassed on social media
25:51You're still gonna get embarrassed
25:52I tell kids, you're gonna get dunked on
25:54You're gonna get crossed over
25:55You're gonna get three-pointer shot on you
25:57You're gonna shoot air balls
25:59That's just the name of the game
26:01But you gotta come out here and work on your game
26:03And I think a lot of these kids
26:05And I commend, um, a butler
26:08Jimmy Butler
26:09Jimmy Butler
26:10For playing one-on-one with guys
26:11To get their game better
26:12And to make them understand
26:13We hit a ball
26:14We had to win something
26:15And that's what it was when we was growing up
26:17Yeah, for sure
26:18I mean, you worked on your game so much
26:19You're now in the Hall of Fame, okay?
26:21Yeah
26:22So, clap it up
26:23The Hall of Famer
26:24I gotta show y'all something
26:25I got a book coming out
26:26Yes, Killer Crossover, your book
26:28I got a book coming out
26:30November the 11th
26:31Killer Crossover
26:32From the Streets of Chicago
26:33The Basketball Royalty
26:34It talks about everything
26:36How I grew up
26:37My parents
26:38All that type of stuff
26:39How I dealt with my son
26:40Mm-hmm
26:41You know, me and Gary
26:42We have, um, similar, um, ideas
26:46And what we did with our kids
26:47Mm-hmm
26:48Like I tell people today
26:49I had to be quiet
26:50I had to shut up
26:52Or my son wouldn't have made it to the NBA
26:54So, as parents, like Gary said
26:57Let them learn
26:58Mm-hmm
26:59Let them learn
27:00Let them go out there and play
27:01And understand what they need to do to get better
27:04And let them go through the tribes and tribulations
27:07Of getting better
27:08Because I, I, I, I wanted him
27:11His mentality to be just like mine
27:13We gotta understand
27:14Our kids grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth
27:17We grew up with playing in dirt
27:19Yeah
27:20Every day
27:21That's fact
27:22So, and we had to grind for it every day
27:23Yeah
27:24It's time for us to get into our number three topic
27:27And that is all about a global women's basketball league
27:30Called Project B
27:31They just made a major move by signing Seattle Sounder
27:34And WNBA Players Union President Nneka Agumake
27:38To a seven figure deal
27:42Man
27:46Seven figures
27:47Yeah, seven
27:48Let me borrow a dollar
27:49For years, WNBA players have been talking about low pay
27:53Project B is saying you don't have to choose between love of the game and getting paid
27:58Now, Tim, obviously we are in a very important time of the WNBA
28:04Because there is a potential lockout looming
28:07What does the future of the WNBA look like?
28:09Well, first of all, kudos to her
28:12And kudos to her making a business decision
28:16You always gotta make business decisions
28:18And I always say take the money
28:21Take the money
28:22Get that money
28:24Don't need that money on the table
28:26Cause you can't get it back
28:27Yeah
28:28I always say that
28:29So I think that this is
28:31This is big
28:32Yeah
28:33For the WNBA
28:34I think what's really, really big
28:36If they go into a lockout
28:38It's gonna be a lot of players going overseas
28:40And playing overseas
28:42And going and get those figures overseas
28:44If she gets a million dollars, what age would we do?
28:48Listen, we already knew what Ice Cube was offering her to play in the big three
28:51Right
28:52She turned it down
28:53But look, Tim, you're not going anywhere
28:55Because we are going to continue this conversation
28:58But we wanna know what you at home think
29:00So use the hashtag
29:01106inSports to join the conversation
29:03And Tim Hardaway Sr. is still staying here
29:05We also get Gary Payton back
29:08Plus, we're still counting down the top stories in sports
29:10And number two is all about second generation ballers
29:14These guys know a thing about that
29:16Don't move
29:17Ooh
29:33Welcome back to 106inSports
29:35We're here with Gary Payton and Tim Hardaway Sr.
29:37Two NBA legends
29:39Now we already know you guys have a relationship outside of the court
29:42But when you played each other
29:44Who talked the most trash?
29:46We gonna say both
29:47Yeah
29:48We both, we both
29:49Come on, Cam
29:50We both were competitive
29:51Very
29:52Because Tim was in my home city
29:54And, you know, we came back with each other doing things like that
29:59And me and Tim was supposed to really play on the same team in college
30:02At El Paso
30:04And it was always a rival there
30:06You know what I'm saying?
30:07But we always had respect for each other
30:09Because we grew up in the same type of neighborhoods
30:13And the same type of things
30:14So I'm gonna put it like this, huh?
30:16Uh oh
30:17Since this is a Thanksgiving episode
30:19We gonna have a whole round table discussion
30:21And I'm gonna give both of you a paragraph to make your point
30:27You and your son
30:30Versus him and his son
30:31Oh
30:32Oh
30:33Who gonna win?
30:35One paragraph
30:36Anybody wanna go first?
30:38This is so big
30:39Hey, you know what?
30:41The plot thickens
30:42But if all of us in our prime, that's gonna be a good one
30:45Yes
30:46Because we gonna, we gonna, we gonna, we gonna, we gonna muscle it up and be tough
30:48Uh huh
30:49But who's gonna win?
30:50I'm gonna tell you this, I'm gonna tell you this
30:51Uh huh
30:52Whoever gets the ball last
30:54Gonna win
30:55Is gonna win
30:56Make it, take it
30:57Right, whoever gets the ball last
30:59Right
31:00Whoever gets the ball last
31:01So if I get it and I go six in a row, that's game
31:04Yeah
31:05Oh man
31:06Well I'm glad you mentioned both of your sons
31:09Or Cam mentioned both of your sons
31:11Uh huh
31:12Because you both are fathers to current players
31:14And that brings us to the number two story on our countdown
31:17And it's all about the next generation of athletes
31:20And it's not just about them carrying on the legacy of their names
31:24But trying to make a legacy of their own
31:26From Kyan Anthony to the Boozer twins
31:28To all types of famous sons in college sports
31:33They're all out here making headlines of their own
31:36We've got two fathers who know their life first hand
31:39Both raised sons who made it to the league
31:41So they know a thing or two about this position
31:44Yeah, they're obviously doing something right
31:46And I, I wanna ask you guys
31:48Where is the line for you both
31:50Between your last name opening doors
31:53But your skill set keeping you in those rooms
31:57I haven't seen too many of basketball player
32:00Great basketball player sons become great basketball players
32:03True
32:04You know what I'm saying?
32:05Why do you think that is?
32:06We grew up different
32:07Yeah, grew up
32:08We grew up different
32:09Our mentality is
32:10I'll give you one
32:11You know I, who?
32:12Talk
32:13Curry
32:14He's better than
32:15He's better than Sal Curry
32:16So good, I ain't good
32:17But his daddy was good
32:18But he, I think he's better than
32:20He became great
32:21So you're saying it's either one or the other
32:22Somebody has to
32:23Gotta be great
32:24And we haven't seen two great basketball players
32:27Son, father
32:28So you're saying like a Michael Jordan
32:30And then a Michael Jordan
32:31Who is gonna become
32:32Hall of Famers together
32:34Wow
32:35Let's, let's, let's, let's
32:36We haven't seen one of them
32:37We haven't seen one of them
32:38And you think that goes to the origin
32:40Like the beginnings of your story
32:42Your basketball story
32:43If you will
32:44Of course, of course
32:45You know, and I, you know, like
32:46I like what they doing with Carmelo's son
32:48Yeah
32:49They bringing him off the bench
32:50They not giving it to him right now
32:52You know, you gotta earn the respect
32:54Of being a freshman
32:55Of being a freshman
32:56You gotta come in
32:57And go through the do's and don'ts
32:59Of being a freshman
33:00And he understands that
33:01And when he comes on the court
33:03He got more respect for his team
33:05And more respect for the game
33:06Yeah, a lot of guys
33:07It's, it's evident early
33:09You know what I'm saying
33:10I think in basketball
33:11You have to have an element of skill
33:14That is not always translated
33:16Or is, is patient
33:18For people to kind of digest
33:20My question to you guys is
33:22You see the shift of what's happening
33:25In Memphis, right?
33:27With Ja
33:28And what would your advice kind of be for him?
33:32We know what he's capable of
33:34And if you could send a message
33:36What would that message be?
33:38As he's going through
33:39What we know him to go through
33:40Let me say this
33:41Ja doesn't have a veteran
33:44That we, we came in
33:46We had a veteran or two or three
33:49That will smack you on your butt
33:51Or bring you over here and say
33:53Yo, man
33:54This is not how we do things around here
33:56This is what you gotta do
33:57And this is how a team is supposed to be formed
34:00And that was a big thing for us
34:02When I came into the NBA
34:04I had nine players
34:06Who had played seven or eight more years
34:09In the NBA
34:10I had to go around
34:12And carry coffee to them at six in the morning
34:15I had to take care of Xavier McDaniel's daughter
34:18And go pick her up from school
34:20See, this is the type of growing up that you need
34:23And you become that person
34:25But when you get these big millions
34:27And don't know what to do
34:28It seems to make you be messed up
34:30Yeah
34:31And I see it too
34:32I see it as he's not having fun
34:34I want him to go back to having fun
34:36And Ja, if you listen to me right now
34:38I think, guy, you just gotta go back to yourself
34:41We'll be right back with more from these two legends
34:45This is 106 in Sports
34:58Welcome back everybody to 106 in Sports
35:00We're here with Gary Payton and Tim Hardaway Sr.
35:03We are finally down to our number one topic
35:06Something to think about
35:07Is the globalization of sports hurting American athletes?
35:10The 2025 World Series was the most watched in 34 years
35:1551 million people tuned in across the US, Canada, and Japan
35:20All thanks to stars like Shohei Otani
35:23At the same time, the NFL is playing games in Berlin and Madrid
35:27And the NBA hasn't had an American MVP in seven years
35:30It's proof that the world's not just watching, it's competing
35:33And is the US still home of the best players or just the biggest leagues?
35:38When you guys played, it was Americans that were dominating
35:42Now with it being
35:43In the NBA
35:45Specifically in the NBA
35:47How do we get back to Americans dominating the sport?
35:51Or are we thinking too much into it?
35:53And before you guys answer that, I want to give everybody some context
35:56The last few MVPs in the NBA have all been what?
35:59International players
36:01What I think, we don't have more players like me and Tim now
36:05In the 90s, we had a basketball player at every position
36:09This is true
36:10And I think that the 400 players are catching up
36:12There have been a league play since they were 14
36:15Right
36:16Since they were 14
36:17Yeah, they've been playing like NBA basketball
36:19I mean, look at Wemby
36:20Now the 2028 Olympics coming up in LA
36:22You have to think
36:23Wemby's gonna be playing for Team France
36:25I'm scared
36:26SGA's gonna be playing for Canada
36:27I'm scared
36:28Is the U.S. in danger of no longer having the best talent?
36:33The best home grown talent
36:35When you look at the landscape of basketball
36:37Well, I say it like this
36:39We're not gonna have the Currys who made all the big shots
36:43Right
36:44In this Olympics this year
36:45Right
36:46So these other younger guys, that's gonna have to step up
36:49And it might
36:51I don't know
36:52I think it might
36:53How you feeling?
36:54I'm very nervous
36:55I don't see nobody that's going to go out there and wow
36:59Us, you know, I think Tatum, Brown
37:02After that
37:03Booker
37:04Booker
37:05Donovan Mitchell
37:06Anthony Edwards
37:07You have the Johns
37:08But I mean
37:09And we just talking about guards
37:10What makes me nervous the most is
37:13All our stars are older
37:15Right
37:16When I say older
37:1735
37:18They're not gonna be
37:19Well, Katie's gonna try, we know that
37:20Yeah, but it's
37:21Even if he tries
37:23It's not a recipe for longevity
37:26But I'm gonna tell you this Cam
37:28When we get to international play
37:30You talking about street ball
37:32Facts
37:33Different rules
37:34Different rules
37:35I mean you could push
37:36Physicality is everything
37:37Physicality is totally different from what they're playing now
37:40Like when we was on the 2000 team
37:42We knew about the physicality
37:44We went in there hitting people first
37:46Yeah
37:47These guys today
37:48They gotta get back to being physical
37:50Because they've been playing like this for so many years
37:53Right, yeah
37:54And I think what's gonna be good about us
37:55Is that we're gonna be on our home soil this time
37:57Yes
37:58We're gonna be in LA
37:59So the route
38:00So the refereeing is gonna be a little bit different
38:02But like what you guys said
38:04It's scary because we don't know what player is gonna be able to come and show up
38:08Right
38:09Canada is gonna be ready
38:10A lot of these teams are gonna be ready
38:11And Canada got about eight
38:122028 is definitely gonna be interesting
38:15And maybe even a little bit spooky
38:17You heard it from two goats right here on 106 in Sports
38:20That's gonna do it for us
38:22Everybody please clap it up for Gary Payne and Tim Hardaway Sr. for joining us
38:27And thank you all for rocking with us
38:29Make sure you hit us up using the hashtag 106 in sports
38:33Cam, as usual, you have the final word
38:36It is Thanksgiving, remember that
38:37It is Thanksgiving
38:39And you know, I'm not gonna lead us in a chant
38:42But tender moment, vulnerable moment
38:44My grandmother
38:46This time last year
38:48Had I known that would be my last time
38:50Witnessing or being a part of a Thanksgiving with her
38:55I would've hugged on her a little bit more
38:57I would've kissed her a little bit longer
38:59I would've just stayed around her a little bit longer
39:02So, do not take these moments for granted
39:05And I'm sorry to bring it all the way down
39:08But I'mma bring it back up
39:09Everybody
39:11On the count of three
39:13Tell me that you're thankful
39:14Say thankful on three
39:15One
39:16Two
39:17Three
39:18Thankful
39:19Appreciate you
39:20As always
39:21One finger, one pinky, one thumb
39:22One love
39:23You feel me?
39:24You feel me?
39:54Like that
39:55tensile
39:56One
39:58One
40:01Two
40:02Two
40:03Two
40:05Two
40:06Four
40:07Two
40:09Three
40:11Two
40:13Three
40:17Two
40:21Eight
40:21Four
