00:01:20Oh your headphones, I forgot them in the car
00:01:35I'm fine
00:01:36Yeah, it could get louder
00:01:38Come on
00:01:39Okay, now put on a happy face
00:01:46Don't worry about me, this is your night
00:01:49I'm great
00:01:51I'm great too
00:01:53Bye
00:01:54Bye
00:01:55Guess I'll just, uh, chaperone the snacks
00:02:03You, uh, need any help with that?
00:02:08Hi Melanie
00:02:08Hi Mr. Hartman
00:02:10Please, call me Daniel
00:02:12Jenny is a fantastic student
00:02:14Jenny talks about you all the time
00:02:16She's my favorite student, but don't tell anyone I said that
00:02:20I won't
00:02:21Well, around here anyway
00:02:23You really are her favorite teacher
00:02:26Thank you
00:02:27And you can tell everyone that
00:02:29I do
00:02:30It's important for her to have a teacher that really appreciates her
00:02:36But who wouldn't appreciate her?
00:02:38A lot of people
00:02:39They don't mean to, they mean well
00:02:41But when they find out that she's autistic
00:02:43They either expect nothing of her
00:02:45Or they think she's a savant
00:02:47Well, no judgment here
00:02:49I think she's great
00:02:51She is
00:02:57Is that snow?
00:03:18Jenny?
00:03:19Is everything okay?
00:03:20No
00:03:20Just the sound, the snow
00:03:23I should have insisted she wear her headphones
00:03:26Can I help you?
00:03:26No, I just
00:03:27She needs me right now
00:03:28I've got to find her
00:03:29Jenny?
00:03:37Jenny?
00:03:38Jenny?
00:03:39Jenny?
00:03:47Are you okay?
00:03:49The snow
00:03:50I should have seen that coming
00:03:52I'm sorry
00:03:54Come here
00:03:57Can we go home?
00:04:05Yep
00:04:05Let's go
00:04:07Bye
00:04:09Hey
00:04:26What you working on?
00:04:28College applications
00:04:30My little girl
00:04:31My little girl is a senior
00:04:35I have been for four months
00:04:37Yes
00:04:38That's very true
00:04:40So where are you thinking?
00:04:43I want to go to Hollinger
00:04:45Hollinger?
00:04:47Like California?
00:04:48They have the best literature program
00:04:50Yeah
00:04:52Yeah, they
00:04:53Of course
00:04:54But it's in California
00:04:57It's okay
00:05:02It's okay
00:05:02You know
00:05:02We'll think about it
00:05:04Okay?
00:05:08The holiday dance is coming up soon
00:05:10Do you want to go shopping
00:05:12And get a new dress?
00:05:15No thanks
00:05:15You want to go to the dance though, right?
00:05:19Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
00:05:29And sorry I could not travel both
00:05:31And be one traveler
00:05:33Long I stood
00:05:34And look down one
00:05:36As far as I could
00:05:37And then Frost finishes triumphantly
00:05:40With two roads diverged in a wood
00:05:42And I
00:05:43I took the one less traveled by
00:05:46And that made all the difference
00:05:48You see
00:05:51This is what great poetry can do
00:05:53Yes
00:05:53Yes
00:05:54It makes you think
00:05:54But more
00:05:55It inspires you to feel
00:05:58So
00:06:02What do you feel?
00:06:09Jenny
00:06:10I feel
00:06:12Excited
00:06:14I get to
00:06:16Choose my road
00:06:17I get to
00:06:18Choose my life
00:06:19Very good
00:06:20And very true
00:06:22This is something
00:06:23I wish we'd all remember
00:06:24More often
00:06:25So
00:06:27Let these great words
00:06:28Inspire us today
00:06:29And every day
00:06:30Oh
00:06:32And for tomorrow
00:06:32Please read the chapter
00:06:33On Edgar Allan Poe
00:06:34Or you shall receive good grades
00:06:36Nevermore
00:06:36Nice work today Jenny
00:06:41I love the poem
00:06:43Great words can inspire us
00:06:46They inspired me
00:06:47Me too
00:06:47Hey
00:06:50Is that a Hollinger crest?
00:06:52You know
00:06:52My sister studied there
00:06:53Not exactly sure
00:06:57It'll be possible
00:06:57It's far away
00:06:59But they have an amazing lit program there
00:07:01I know
00:07:03And you are an amazing lit student
00:07:05I know
00:07:06Good
00:07:07Well
00:07:09I'd be happy to write a recommendation
00:07:10I mean
00:07:11Have a good afternoon
00:07:14I just don't get it
00:07:18Could you pick a college
00:07:20Further from home?
00:07:21Maybe she just wants to spread her wings
00:07:23Uh
00:07:24Here you go
00:07:25Gavin
00:07:25The volume should work on those ones
00:07:26You know
00:07:27Try something new
00:07:28Isn't that why you started
00:07:31The Possible Center?
00:07:32To show neurodiverse teens
00:07:35The breadth of their possibilities
00:07:37Thanks Vicky
00:07:38I have read our mission statement
00:07:40I think I wrote it
00:07:42But couldn't she just spread her wings
00:07:45A little closer to home?
00:07:46Look she is not trying to leave you
00:07:49I know
00:07:50It is okay
00:07:51To be sad
00:07:52Even at Christmas time
00:07:54It's okay to be mad about the divorce
00:07:57To long for the past
00:08:00To worry about the future
00:08:01Thank you
00:08:02But this isn't about me
00:08:04This is about Jenny
00:08:06Maybe it's the weather
00:08:08There's no falling snow in Southern California
00:08:11She's still afraid of the falling snow?
00:08:15It was bad before
00:08:15But ever since the dance
00:08:17It's gotten worse
00:08:18I'm so sorry
00:08:31No, no, I'm sorry
00:08:32I must have been a little too focused on my handiwork
00:08:35Apparently
00:08:36It's good to see you, Melanie
00:08:38Nice to see you too, Mr. Hartman
00:08:40Daniel
00:08:41Right
00:08:42Um
00:08:44Anyway
00:08:45I know the dance didn't go really well
00:08:49For you and Jenny last year
00:08:50And I just wanted you to know
00:08:51If there's anything that I could do
00:08:52To help make it better
00:08:52Just let me know
00:08:54You could run for PTA president
00:08:56No
00:08:57That is Miss Foy
00:08:59And she'd wipe the floor with me
00:09:01But honestly
00:09:03I know they started planning
00:09:05So I think they meet every Friday afternoon
00:09:07And if you wanted to
00:09:08Maybe we could
00:09:08It's okay
00:09:09I've got it
00:09:11But thank you
00:09:13Of course
00:09:13Yeah
00:09:14Okay
00:09:14Pasta looks great
00:09:16Thank you
00:09:17Okay
00:09:17Bye, Mr. Hartman
00:09:18Bye, Jenny
00:09:19Bye
00:09:20Jenny
00:09:23You okay?
00:09:31Jenny
00:09:32Hey, I was spinning
00:09:37Hey, I was talking
00:09:39Why are we talking?
00:09:41Are you seriously considering
00:09:44Not going to the Christmas dance this year?
00:09:47I don't want to go
00:09:48It's your last winter formal
00:09:50So?
00:09:53So the Christmas dance
00:09:54Has always been a great way
00:09:56For us to lift my winter blues
00:09:59I know
00:09:59But they are your blues
00:10:01Not mine
00:10:02Good
00:10:02But we love Christmas
00:10:05And the dance
00:10:08And the dance
00:10:08Has always been a great way
00:10:08To celebrate that
00:10:10With everyone
00:10:10I know
00:10:11Is this why you want
00:10:14To go to California?
00:10:17There's too many bad associations here
00:10:19Or are you still feeling stuck
00:10:22About the dance last year?
00:10:23No
00:10:23Jenny, you have to understand
00:10:26That if you can't
00:10:27Handle a dance
00:10:29I can't in good conscience
00:10:32Send you to a school
00:10:33That's halfway across the country
00:10:34Mom, can we not talk
00:10:35About this right now?
00:10:36No
00:10:36Mom, can we not talk
00:11:06And then she just
00:11:19Cut me out
00:11:21Can you believe it?
00:11:22Well, yeah
00:11:23She's a teenager
00:11:24I suppose
00:11:25For a couple more years anyway
00:11:27It's her last opportunity
00:11:30To go to the dance
00:11:31You know, this is
00:11:33A memory that she'll have
00:11:36For the rest of her life
00:11:37And she won't have it
00:11:39If she never has the experience
00:11:41I get it
00:11:42You just want her to be happy
00:11:44The dance makes my mom happy
00:11:46But I messed it up
00:11:48You didn't mess anything up
00:11:50I don't want my mom to be sad
00:11:53Then go to the dance
00:11:54I do not want to go
00:11:56You don't have to
00:11:58If you don't want to
00:11:59We can just all hang out together
00:12:01Instead
00:12:01Do her own thing
00:12:02You mean
00:12:05Have our own dance?
00:12:09Yeah
00:12:09I mean, we
00:12:10We can have our own dance
00:12:12A different dance
00:12:13With anyone who wants
00:12:15To do that with us
00:12:15Then I can go
00:12:17And my mom can go too
00:12:19What will it have?
00:12:21No loud music
00:12:22I love loud music
00:12:23But what else?
00:12:24No strobing lights
00:12:25Yeah
00:12:25And no falling snow
00:12:27No falling snow
00:12:29We can invite whoever we want
00:12:32Like cute boys
00:12:34Meet at lunch to Clint?
00:12:36Yes
00:12:36We're going to organize a dance
00:12:38Wait
00:12:40I want it to be a secret
00:12:42For my mom though
00:12:42So
00:12:43It'll just be our secret
00:12:45Our secret
00:12:46I just
00:12:51I want her to have
00:12:53A great senior year
00:12:55I know
00:12:56And the best Christmas ever
00:12:58Of course you do
00:12:59And I want her final holiday dance
00:13:01To be joyful
00:13:03Well then
00:13:04Give her a dance
00:13:06That brings her joy
00:13:07What?
00:13:08Well, it's quite simple
00:13:09Use the skills
00:13:10That you've acquired here
00:13:11To make accommodations
00:13:12At the dance
00:13:13You think I can do that?
00:13:14I'm quite sure
00:13:15That you can
00:13:16Okay, well
00:13:17Where would I start?
00:13:19Join the PTA
00:13:20Me on the PTA
00:13:21Mm-hmm
00:13:22If they are
00:13:25Meeting tomorrow
00:13:27Well then
00:13:28You can email the chair
00:13:30I'm sure that their email
00:13:31Is on the school's website
00:13:33Okay
00:13:33Yeah, I'll
00:13:34I'll do that tonight
00:13:35Good
00:13:36Tonight?
00:13:37Wait, you want me to do it right now?
00:13:39I'm waiting
00:13:40Okay
00:13:41Okay
00:13:42Can I do it?
00:13:44Okay, what's wrong?
00:13:45Nothing
00:13:46Nothing, I just
00:13:46I
00:13:46I want this to be a surprise for Jenny
00:13:49Mm-hmm
00:13:50Keep it between us
00:13:52Deal
00:13:53Got any plans for today?
00:14:03Mm-hmm
00:14:03Mm-hmm
00:14:04Want to tell me about it?
00:14:07No
00:14:07Do you have big plans?
00:14:11No
00:14:11No, nothing at all
00:14:12Nothing out of the ordinary
00:14:13That's good
00:14:15Yeah
00:14:16It is good
00:14:17Good
00:14:17Yeah
00:14:18Good
00:14:20Shall we go?
00:14:23Mm-hmm
00:14:23Wait, weather check
00:14:25Currently
00:14:2739 degrees
00:14:28And sunny skies
00:14:29No snow
00:14:30Perfect
00:14:31What's the problem?
00:14:43New kid
00:14:43Can't speak?
00:14:48No, come on
00:14:49Answer me
00:14:51If you can
00:14:52Why are you being mean?
00:14:54Love's go
00:15:02You okay?
00:15:05Okay
00:15:05Who's the new boy?
00:15:17He's cute
00:15:18Do you know him, Jenny?
00:15:20Earth to Jenny
00:15:22Oh
00:15:23Um
00:15:24No
00:15:25Never seen him before
00:15:26Anyways
00:15:28The dance
00:15:29Lots to discuss
00:15:30The mission of the Possible Center
00:15:34Has always been to empower individuals
00:15:36No matter their abilities
00:15:38To achieve their dreams
00:15:39And no matter how ambitious
00:15:40Um
00:15:41And also
00:15:42We have adults on the spectrum
00:15:44That work here
00:15:44Will is going to love this place
00:15:47There was nothing like this
00:15:49In our old town
00:15:50Oh, there was nothing like this here
00:15:51Uh, for kids
00:15:53There's tons of resources
00:15:54But once they become teenagers
00:15:56Few and far between
00:15:58Much too few
00:15:59And way too far
00:16:00Exactly
00:16:01I saw a need
00:16:02Uh, so I
00:16:03I quit my job
00:16:05And along with my friend
00:16:07Vicky
00:16:08Fifteen years later
00:16:09Here we are
00:16:09Um
00:16:10It's very impressive
00:16:11Yes, I understand
00:16:13These things happen
00:16:14Good news, right?
00:16:16Sure
00:16:17Good news is
00:16:18You have the weekend off
00:16:19They had to cancel
00:16:20We had a field trip planned
00:16:23And the kids were
00:16:24Really looking forward to it
00:16:26Oh, that's too bad
00:16:27It's okay
00:16:28You know what?
00:16:29We'll figure something out
00:16:30After all, this is the Possible Center
00:16:32Where anything is possible
00:16:33Except a field trip
00:16:34This weekend
00:16:35You know
00:16:38The reason we moved here
00:16:39Is because my husband and I
00:16:40Are taking over my dad's property
00:16:42It's a stunning location
00:16:43There is a Christmas tree farm
00:16:46And a Santa's village
00:16:47Of course we do events and weddings
00:16:49But it's a great place for a field trip
00:16:51As I said
00:16:53Anything is possible
00:16:54That is incredibly gracious of you
00:16:57Oh, there's a meeting room in the back
00:16:59We could go to
00:16:59It's pretty private
00:17:01Okay, okay
00:17:01That's my daughter Jenny
00:17:03Jenny, this is Mrs. Hawkins
00:17:05Her son Will is joining the Possible Center
00:17:08They're new in town
00:17:09What are you guys up to?
00:17:13Nothing, really
00:17:14Just a project
00:17:15It's funny
00:17:17I asked Will to meet me here
00:17:18After school, too
00:17:19Good to have everyone connect
00:17:21For the big field trip day
00:17:22Yes
00:17:23Sorry
00:17:35It takes him time
00:17:37To warm up to people
00:17:38To talk
00:17:40You don't have to say sorry
00:17:42We don't apologize here
00:17:44Here we understand
00:17:46Thank you
00:17:48This place is beyond words
00:17:51It must keep you very busy
00:17:53It does
00:17:54Especially lately
00:18:07We do want everyone
00:18:12To have a good time at the dance
00:18:13But we also want it to be
00:18:15Well, a good time
00:18:17Oh, absolutely
00:18:19I mean, that's all that I want
00:18:21I'm only asking that
00:18:23The Holiday Ball be made more
00:18:25Accessible
00:18:26For students on the spectrum
00:18:27Accessible?
00:18:29Well, yeah
00:18:30Just as we've made the school
00:18:31Accessible for people physically
00:18:32We would make the dance
00:18:34Accessible for everyone's
00:18:35Emotional well-being, too
00:18:36Well, how would we do that?
00:18:38Well, it's different
00:18:39For each individual
00:18:40Generally, lower volume
00:18:42Of music
00:18:43Scheduled breaks
00:18:45We could do away
00:18:46With strobe lights
00:18:47But the kids love strobe lights
00:18:50I'm really not trying
00:18:52To take away
00:18:53From everyone's enjoyment
00:18:54I'm only asking
00:18:55That we ensure
00:18:57That these special experiences
00:18:59Be available to every student
00:19:01Isn't that what we all want
00:19:04For our children?
00:19:05Well, we certainly do
00:19:06It's just
00:19:07Sounds like a whole lot
00:19:09That would need to be done
00:19:10And the dance is only
00:19:11Nine days away
00:19:11And we'd need someone
00:19:13To chair that
00:19:14And the whole committee
00:19:14Has their hands full
00:19:15What if I put together
00:19:17A proposal for you to approve?
00:19:18You'd need a faculty liaison
00:19:20And with finals underway
00:19:21They're all overloaded as it is
00:19:24If only you had come to us
00:19:26With this sooner
00:19:27If only
00:19:28I'll do it
00:19:30Apologies for my tardiness
00:19:33But I did overhear
00:19:35What Miss Austin was suggesting
00:19:36And I'd be happy
00:19:37To be her faculty liaison
00:19:38You would?
00:19:40Yeah
00:19:40Great
00:19:41You two are officially
00:19:44The accessibility team
00:19:45All in favor?
00:19:53I guess we should figure out
00:19:54How we're going to do this
00:19:55You didn't say that
00:19:56You were on the PTA
00:19:57Oh, I said I wasn't running
00:19:58For president of the PTA
00:20:00I'm not
00:20:01Okay
00:20:02So, what's next?
00:20:04I will work up a plan
00:20:05And show it to you
00:20:06For the official stamp of approval
00:20:08I don't want to just be
00:20:09A token stamp of approval though
00:20:11I don't even own a stamp
00:20:12No, I want to help
00:20:15I want to actually help
00:20:16Make this happen
00:20:17I appreciate that
00:20:19But this isn't something
00:20:20That can just be dreamed up
00:20:21I've spent Jenny's life
00:20:24Learning how to do this
00:20:26You know, a song that's too loud
00:20:29A light that's too bright
00:20:31Unexpected snow
00:20:32One wrong move
00:20:34And this can all be for nothing
00:20:36I get that
00:20:37I do
00:20:38And I've spent my whole career
00:20:40As a teacher
00:20:41Making sure that
00:20:42My students can be
00:20:43Their best selves
00:20:44Right?
00:20:45Isn't that what
00:20:46Your dance is about?
00:20:50So, this weekend?
00:20:51Oh, I can't
00:20:52This weekend
00:20:53The center is going on
00:20:54A field trip
00:20:55To a Christmas tree farm
00:20:56Oh, yeah
00:20:57Now, that sounds like
00:20:58A terrible place
00:20:59To plan a Christmas dance
00:21:01I'll join
00:21:02Oh, did I invite you?
00:21:05I don't know
00:21:06Did you?
00:21:08Okay
00:21:09Okay
00:21:11Uh, um
00:21:12But can we please
00:21:14Keep the planning of this
00:21:15A secret
00:21:15I really want it
00:21:16To be a surprise for Jenny
00:21:18Okay
00:21:19Thank you
00:21:24You know, and then he just
00:21:29Invited himself
00:21:30Can you believe that?
00:21:32Oh, that he wants to help
00:21:33Yeah
00:21:34Scoundrel
00:21:35I don't need his help
00:21:36I have a Vicky
00:21:37Yeah, well, I need help
00:21:39So that's why you have a Daniel
00:21:41Plus
00:21:41Jenny, she loves him
00:21:43So he can't be all that bad
00:21:45Wait, no
00:21:45I never said that he was all that bad
00:21:47Mm-hmm
00:21:47He inspires Jenny to write
00:21:51And he is a very good teacher
00:21:53Well, he's not just a teacher
00:21:54He's a published poet
00:21:56I've read his work
00:21:57It's beautiful stuff
00:21:58That's so cool
00:22:01Hmm?
00:22:02Friends, kids
00:22:02Oh, hey, everyone
00:22:03Okay, you are all free to explore
00:22:08Oh, and the Hawkins have generously offered
00:22:12For each of you to pick your very own tree
00:22:14And bring it home for the holidays
00:22:16So please, let's all remember
00:22:17To thank them on our way out
00:22:18Okay
00:22:19Yeah, explore
00:22:20Have fun
00:22:21Sounds good
00:22:21Yeah
00:22:22Okay, where should we start?
00:22:23Oh, hey, Daniel
00:22:24Hey
00:22:24Do you lose points for tardiness?
00:22:29Oh, in school, I'm prompt
00:22:30But when that bell rings
00:22:31Rebel
00:22:32I'm, um, gonna go help him find a tree
00:22:38Okay
00:22:38I'll see you
00:22:39Okay, see ya
00:22:40See you later
00:22:40Thank you for coming
00:22:43I'm sorry if I was
00:22:46Hi, Mr. Hartman
00:22:47Why are you here?
00:22:50Well, I heard so much about what your mom was doing with the Possible Center
00:22:54So I wanted to come in and see what this is all about
00:22:56She created the whole thing
00:22:58I'm sure she did
00:23:00Okay, well, I'm glad you're here
00:23:04And I liked reading Edgar Allan Poe
00:23:07Nevermore
00:23:08Nevermore
00:23:09Journey, come on
00:23:10All right, let's go
00:23:11Well, at least someone's glad I'm here
00:23:13It just sure is
00:23:15You know, I actually do need a Christmas tree myself
00:23:21Do you think they sell one around here?
00:23:24Follow me
00:23:24Solid technique you got there
00:23:29Well, I've cut my fair share of Christmas trees
00:23:33Apparently so
00:23:35Ah, it's just so beautiful around here
00:23:39Don't you love this time of year?
00:23:42Yeah
00:23:43Oh, I'm sorry
00:23:45Sore subject
00:23:47It's just
00:23:48Ever since the divorce
00:23:50This time of year can be tough
00:23:53I have a name for it
00:23:56I call it the winter blues
00:23:58Is Jenny's father still in the picture?
00:24:02Yeah, yeah
00:24:02He's still in her life
00:24:03Um, he lives about an hour away
00:24:05She'll spend New Year's with him
00:24:07And you'll miss her every single day she's gone, I'm sure
00:24:10Yes
00:24:12Yes, I will
00:24:14Have at her
00:24:16Watch this
00:24:18Okay
00:24:22You ready?
00:24:25No
00:24:25A poet and a lumberjack
00:24:33Luckily I loosened it for you
00:24:35Yeah
00:24:36I wouldn't exactly call myself a poet, though
00:24:39I heard that you were published
00:24:42Yeah
00:24:42That was a long time ago
00:24:44What changed?
00:24:46What, my bank account, for one
00:24:47It's kind of hard to pay the bills as a poet, you know
00:24:51I'm sorry
00:24:52No, don't be
00:24:53I mean, there was definitely a time where I dreamed about going to Paris
00:24:56You know
00:24:57The cafes where Fitzgerald and Hemingway and Zelda used to frequent
00:25:02That would have been amazing
00:25:04But then
00:25:05I became a teacher
00:25:07And I realized that that was
00:25:10That was my true calling
00:25:12So
00:25:14I mean, poetry, it's
00:25:16I understand
00:25:17You know, when you have something that you really love
00:25:22It's hard to find time to do anything else
00:25:26Yeah
00:25:29So I'm excited about this
00:25:37What are we thinking?
00:25:38Oh, uh, alternatives, um, for students with diverse needs
00:25:42You know, I would love to find a substitute for the blurring speakers
00:25:44Yes, exactly
00:25:46Right
00:25:46And a low-stim area that has games
00:25:50We could do specialized foods
00:25:52Yes, and drinks
00:25:53This is great
00:25:54Yeah, okay, um
00:25:57Why do I feel like there's a butt coming on?
00:25:59Oh, no, no
00:25:59No, no, no butts
00:26:00However
00:26:02Oh
00:26:03This is going to cost more money than the PTA has on hand
00:26:07Hmm
00:26:08We'll raise the funds
00:26:11The Possible Center is holding its holiday fundraiser
00:26:15And the money is supposed to go to an event
00:26:16So what better event than an all-inclusive dance?
00:26:20That sounds like a perfect plan
00:26:22Ha, thank you
00:26:23Now pick up your end, lumberjack
00:26:26Sorry, sorry
00:26:27Okay, this way
00:26:27Okay, so we are going to need a venue
00:26:32Activities
00:26:34Food
00:26:34And not to mention a whack ton of money to pull this off
00:26:37How much money do we think we need?
00:26:40More than we have
00:26:41It's okay
00:26:41We are going to figure it out
00:26:42I got it
00:26:43Volume
00:26:43I got it
00:26:45We can sell our own items
00:26:47Candles
00:26:48Cards we make
00:26:49Oh, maybe one of the poems you wrote in Mr. Hartman's class
00:26:51One of my poems?
00:26:52Sure
00:26:52I love your poems
00:26:53Okay, where can we sell them?
00:26:55We don't exactly own a posh store somewhere
00:26:57Well, how about here?
00:27:01I can ask Mrs. Hawkins
00:27:02Yeah, people are spending lots of money already
00:27:05Yeah, that is a great idea, Jenny
00:27:07And then all the money we raise can go towards the dance
00:27:09We can do it
00:27:11And then it would still be part of the dance, right?
00:27:14So that just, it makes sense
00:27:15If we could do it
00:27:16Hey, girls
00:27:17Oh, it's great, you're here
00:27:20We're here, too
00:27:22Yeah, we can see you
00:27:23Of course you can
00:27:24Yeah
00:27:25What are you guys doing?
00:27:27You don't have a tree
00:27:28Mom, we already have a tree
00:27:29We do
00:27:30Is everything okay, Ms. Austin?
00:27:32Oh, we're just
00:27:33We're
00:27:33She's
00:27:34She's tired
00:27:35It's a lot of work
00:27:36Cutting down my tree
00:27:37I mean, I did most of the work, but
00:27:38No, you didn't
00:27:39Okay, I didn't
00:27:40Um
00:27:41It's nice, though, right?
00:27:43Majestic?
00:27:44Yes
00:27:45But ours is even better
00:27:46Oh, I'm sure
00:27:47Okay
00:27:48Bye
00:27:49Bye
00:27:50Toodles
00:27:50Have fun
00:27:52Surprise maintained
00:27:53Well done, you
00:27:54Sauer, did you have fun?
00:27:58Yes, and so did you
00:28:01I did
00:28:02Thank you
00:28:03You're welcome
00:28:04Oh, I forgot my clipboard
00:28:06Oh, be right back
00:28:08Um, excuse me, that's my
00:28:13Hi
00:28:17Why don't you like to talk?
00:28:22You don't have to right now
00:28:29If you don't want to
00:28:30But I would be happy to listen
00:28:32If you do
00:28:33I like your train
00:28:38Oh
00:28:44Oh
00:28:48Be right back
00:28:50Oh
00:28:53Oh
00:28:53Oh
00:29:00Oh
00:29:04Oh
00:29:06Oh
00:29:07Oh
00:29:10I win.
00:29:26I was so close.
00:29:27Nope.
00:29:31Today was a good day.
00:29:34I know, right?
00:29:36You and Mr. Hartman had fun.
00:29:39Yeah.
00:29:40Well, um, sure.
00:29:43You know, we get along.
00:29:46He talked to you?
00:29:48We talked to each other.
00:29:51Why?
00:29:54What if someone doesn't want to talk to me?
00:29:58Well, maybe they just don't want to talk.
00:30:04Why?
00:30:05I don't know.
00:30:07But I know that it has nothing to do with you.
00:30:10Okay.
00:30:13Okay.
00:30:14Rematch.
00:30:15No.
00:30:16Yes.
00:30:16No, come on.
00:30:17I've got a winner.
00:30:18Oh, get at it.
00:30:19I deserve to have a rematch.
00:30:21I won!
00:30:21Okay.
00:30:30Hi.
00:30:31Hi.
00:30:32Hi, I like seeing you today, and your train.
00:30:41I liked seeing you too, so I texted you.
00:30:46Thank you, I'm glad you did.
00:30:51You were planning an event?
00:30:55A dance.
00:30:59You want to help?
00:31:08Yes.
00:31:25I hope you're getting some rest.
00:31:34I am, thank you for today.
00:31:43See you tomorrow, lots more to do.
00:31:47Can't wait, sleep tight, Miss Austin.
00:31:52Sweet dreams, Mr. Hartman.
00:31:56Sweet dreams, Mr. Hartman.
00:32:05Sweet dreams, Mr. Hartman.
00:32:14It's slave bells ringing in the snow, reading me back home.
00:32:20It's evergreen, the mistletoe, and I'm the one below.
00:32:29I feel so good this holiday.
00:32:32My spirit's high, I wanna make you feel the same.
00:32:37I wanna give a little joy, spread your chin.
00:32:41I wanna give a little joy, it's time to hear.
00:32:44I wanna give a little love and laughter to you.
00:32:47I love that one cozy feeling.
00:32:50I wanna give a little joy and a little dream.
00:32:52I wanna give a little joy, it's all we need.
00:32:55I wanna give a little love and laughter to you.
00:32:58Just love magic and all your wishes.
00:33:01I wanna give a little joy, joy, joy to your world this Christmas.
00:33:06Merry Christmas.
00:33:08Hi.
00:33:09Hey, Jenny.
00:33:10Hey, gang.
00:33:11You doing some Christmas shopping?
00:33:13Christmas selling.
00:33:14Oh, like what?
00:33:20When fear sets in, I get to choose
00:33:22To smile away the winter blues.
00:33:24Christmas love so pure and bright,
00:33:27The season fills my heart with light.
00:33:30Did you write this, Jenny?
00:33:32Yes, after you read the poem in class.
00:33:35It's beautiful.
00:33:37It's for sale.
00:33:38Five dollars.
00:33:39Ten dollars.
00:33:40I mean, hey, even at that price, it's still a bargain.
00:33:43There you go.
00:33:44Thanks.
00:33:45Have a good day.
00:33:46Ten dollars.
00:33:47Four days till the dance.
00:33:55Daniel Hartman, reporting for Didi.
00:33:57Thank you for coming.
00:33:59There is lots to sell and lots to buy.
00:34:02Come on.
00:34:03All right.
00:34:04Um, like, like what?
00:34:06Oh, just, you know, something that'll help the PTA pass the proposal.
00:34:10Are you talking about bribing PTA President Foy?
00:34:14Miss Austin, that is scandalous.
00:34:16No.
00:34:17No.
00:34:18Not yet, anyway.
00:34:20You know, just, just things that'll help sell the idea.
00:34:23Um...
00:34:24Merry Christmas.
00:34:25Thank you, Liam.
00:34:26I love it.
00:34:28Aw.
00:34:29Um, you know, like decorations that don't flash or no falling snow.
00:34:36Jenny does not like falling snow.
00:34:38Can I ask?
00:34:39You know what?
00:34:40Forget it.
00:34:41I am here to help, not pry.
00:34:44When Jenny was a little girl, we were driving and it started to snow and I hit a patch of ice.
00:34:51My car got stuck.
00:34:52I called a tow truck when I was talking to the tow truck driver.
00:34:57Jenny got out of the car and wandered off and I didn't see.
00:35:00Yeah, you must have been terrified.
00:35:02But when I finally found her, I mean, she was shaken, but she seemed fine.
00:35:09But then the next time that it snowed...
00:35:15And then the time of the dance, it just, it triggered her and it made it so much worse.
00:35:21And she still doesn't want to talk about it.
00:35:25I'm sorry.
00:35:28Communicating can be really tough at times.
00:35:31Jenny and I are definitely not communicating lately.
00:35:35Uh, hence the secret dance planning.
00:35:39I'm not trying to micromanage her.
00:35:42I'm just trying to help her create a clear path for success.
00:35:46Why are you giving me those judgmental teacher eyes?
00:35:50Oh, it's, it's not judgmental.
00:35:52It's, it's admiration.
00:35:55You do so much for Jenny, so much out of so much love for her.
00:36:00That's all.
00:36:04Thanks so much.
00:36:07And happy holidays.
00:36:09We're almost sold out of Christmas cards.
00:36:12With this much money, we could buy a place to have the dance.
00:36:15A few more million cards, maybe.
00:36:18We're doing it.
00:36:19Will, we're really doing it.
00:36:23Will?
00:36:27We are.
00:36:28But, uh, we're gonna need to sell a lot more to pay for everything that we want at the dance.
00:36:32Well, what if we make more cards?
00:36:34I don't think it's gonna cut it.
00:36:35Then, what are we gonna do?
00:36:37What can we do?
00:36:40Trees.
00:36:41Um, I could ask my parents to sell trees for the dance.
00:36:55You would do that for me?
00:36:57Will, why don't you show Jenny around?
00:37:03It seems like there's a lot of fun stuff to see here.
00:37:06If you want, I would like to go explore with you.
00:37:11We don't have to, but I would like it.
00:37:14I built a train layout.
00:37:17Do you wanna see?
00:37:19I would love to see it.
00:37:22Okay.
00:37:27These are good.
00:37:28Yeah.
00:37:29No, no, don't.
00:37:30No, no, no, you have to model them for all your new customers.
00:37:33How do I look?
00:37:34Dashing.
00:37:35Was that a reindeer joke?
00:37:37Maybe.
00:37:38I think you should stick to teaching.
00:37:40Hey, no, no, no, keep them on.
00:37:41It'll block out the rest of my bad jokes.
00:37:48Have you ever heard of silent disco?
00:37:50Yeah.
00:37:51It's where people wear headphones and, and dance.
00:37:55Yeah.
00:37:57We could buy glowing headphones and, and we could decorate them for Christmas with antler
00:38:02ears and...
00:38:03Elf ears.
00:38:04Yes.
00:38:05Oh, this is practical and festive.
00:38:08I love it.
00:38:09We could just, you know, get our own headphones and, and make one for each PTA member and decorate
00:38:13it and give them proof of concept.
00:38:15Hey, we could use my classroom to like a Santa's workshop.
00:38:18That sounds fun.
00:38:19Yeah.
00:38:20I could bring our supplies.
00:38:21I'll bring the pizza.
00:38:34This is the Hudson J-Class 484 steam locomotive.
00:38:37The 484 means that it has four lead wheels, eight driving wheels, and four trailing wheels.
00:38:42It has an extra large boiler and a huge firebox.
00:38:45It weighs almost half a million pounds and it can pull up to 18 cars.
00:38:48Right now we have four, but it can pull almost the entire...
00:38:51I'm talking too much.
00:38:56Maybe.
00:38:57Sorry.
00:38:59I talk a lot when I'm excited about something.
00:39:04I'm really excited about trains.
00:39:06I noticed.
00:39:08You said you were happy to listen?
00:39:13I am.
00:39:14Maybe we can take a five minute break?
00:39:18Yes, please.
00:39:19Okay.
00:39:20You built that yourself?
00:39:28Yes.
00:39:29With my dad.
00:39:30Will you build one for the dance?
00:39:31Yes.
00:39:32Why don't you like to talk sometimes?
00:39:48Is it because you get scared?
00:39:53Sometimes.
00:39:57Sometimes I just don't want to talk.
00:40:00That's okay.
00:40:01And it's okay to get scared.
00:40:03I get scared sometimes too.
00:40:06What makes you scared?
00:40:12Do you want to talk about it?
00:40:18Now look who's not talking.
00:40:19Now look who's not talking.
00:40:25Oh, there is your lunch kit.
00:40:44I forgot to make your lunch last night.
00:40:46I got up early and packed it already.
00:40:48You did?
00:40:49Good for you.
00:40:54Mom?
00:40:55Yeah?
00:40:56Do you ever worry you're making the wrong choices because you're scared what other people might
00:41:01say?
00:41:02Yeah.
00:41:03Yeah.
00:41:04I mean, I think we all do.
00:41:07Then what do you do?
00:41:09I try to remember that it doesn't matter what other people say.
00:41:14And that I try to do what I think is right.
00:41:17To follow my own instincts.
00:41:19Like you should follow your own instincts.
00:41:22You trust my instincts?
00:41:26One hundred percent.
00:41:32One hundred percent.
00:41:33Oh, my God.
00:41:35One hundred percent.
00:41:38As freezing persons recollect the snow, first chill, then stupor and then the letting
00:41:44go.
00:41:45Ladies and gentlemen, Emily Dickinson.
00:41:47Oh, and just a reminder, your term papers are due by the end of the week.
00:41:53No extensions.
00:41:54Get them in on time or you get lumps of coal and an F.
00:41:57Watch it there.
00:41:59there. I like that poem a lot. Right? Great words can have all the power in the world
00:42:08and set at the right time. Remember when you said you would help with my college applications?
00:42:15Yeah, absolutely. Would you write my recommendation letter?
00:42:19Of course. Did you decide on a school already? Hollinger. Wow, nice. What does your mom think
00:42:26about you going there? She told me to trust my instincts. Well then, all right. I'll get you
00:42:32that recommendation by today. Thanks. Yeah. Bye, Jenny. Okay, the good news first or the bad? Good.
00:42:43I managed to score us a foosball table from that party rental place thanks to Will's parents helping
00:42:47us raise more money. I also picked up a bunch of decorations and some supplies. Amazing.
00:42:52What's the bad news? We don't have a venue. What about the community center? It's booked
00:42:58up. What about the possible center? No, that would ruin the surprise for my mom.
00:43:04Oh no. Now what?
00:43:09Um, I have an idea. I can show you if you want. Yes.
00:43:16Yes. Okay. Here we go. Here it is. We can use this? My parents said yes, as long as
00:43:38we decorated ourselves. And clean up. I'm a great organizer, so that shouldn't be too hard.
00:43:46Oh. Okay, maybe it's a little hard. Yeah. We'll need Bella and Caitlin to help.
00:43:57Tomorrow? Tomorrow.
00:44:04You know you can talk to me, right? I know. I do. I mean, when you get scared too,
00:44:10you can talk to me. Thank you.
00:44:18You don't deserve to be scared.
00:44:22What if I still am?
00:44:23That's when you talk to me.
00:44:33Ooh, look at you. You're a natural.
00:44:35Thank you. Uh, my grandfather was an elf.
00:44:38There's still some pizza left if you're hungry.
00:44:40Yeah. All right.
00:44:45So, this is where the magic happens.
00:44:49Where you inspire the, uh, the young readers and writers of the future.
00:44:54I love it. Love it. Honestly, seeing their eyes come alive when they hear great writing, I mean,
00:45:00if I can inspire one student, just one, it's a great day.
00:45:05You inspire Jenny every day.
00:45:08What? She loves literature.
00:45:11I mean, I'm so happy your daughter's pursuing it. She's very talented.
00:45:14She is.
00:45:18What about you?
00:45:22Uh, what about me?
00:45:23Well, you've got all these books on so many poets, but what about your own book?
00:45:31The unflappable Daniel Hartman's been flapped.
00:45:35Maybe a little bit.
00:45:39Do you share your poems?
00:45:43I used to, I used to love slam poetry, you know, public performance of my work.
00:45:47And I, I share famous poems with my students in class, and I love it. I love it. But I,
00:45:54I always wondered if one day somebody would be reading my work to their students in class.
00:46:00You know?
00:46:00Yeah.
00:46:01And then, you know, life goes in other directions, has other plans, right?
00:46:09Well, we are on the home stretch. We've got like, I don't know, two more glue gun burns before
00:46:14we have to, uh, out again, three. Um, we have to present to the PTA in like, an hour.
00:46:22In this way, not only is it a festive addition to the dance, each student can listen to the music
00:46:27and volume of their choosing. All the same fun, but with, uh, an inclusive, positive twist.
00:46:36Guys, come on. This is a fresh take, I swear. The kids are gonna love it, okay?
00:46:41Oh, it's a great idea. It's just different. Not bad. Just, I know, I know that it is. It is different.
00:46:49But that's what makes it wonderful. You know, let's try something different.
00:46:56Traditions evolve. The school prides itself on inclusion. We always have.
00:47:01It's why Jenny loves it here.
00:47:10You're right. I'm on board. But you would need to lead the charge. Be my second in command.
00:47:17Absolutely.
00:47:18All in favor of making Melanie chairwoman of the dance.
00:47:21Yep. I love that.
00:47:23Yeah. Thank you all so much.
00:47:25Good night, Ed. Did you want anything before bed?
00:47:41No.
00:47:43Okay.
00:47:46What's that?
00:47:47Oh, uh, it's, it's just a little bedtime reading.
00:47:54Mom.
00:47:56Yeah.
00:47:57You seem happy.
00:48:01I feel happy.
00:48:04And then I feel happy too.
00:48:06Good.
00:48:08Good night, sweetheart.
00:48:09Good night.
00:48:17Good night.
00:48:18I'm excited for tomorrow.
00:48:22Me too.
00:48:22So I'm thinking that the hot chocolate cart can go right over there.
00:48:47Oh, and the party favor table will be at the main entrance with the fidget spinners and the headphones.
00:48:51And the main directory will have a map to the sensory room.
00:48:56Oh, and the games, uh, we're going to put in the corner just to keep it a little bit more secluded.
00:49:00Okay.
00:49:01Check and check.
00:49:03Oh, but sadly, the rental company is out of the foosball table.
00:49:07What?
00:49:07Yep.
00:49:08Already rented.
00:49:09Check it out.
00:49:10I snagged the last corner side of the rental place.
00:49:12Perfect.
00:49:14And I got this.
00:49:16Let the jingle bells swing.
00:49:18Oh.
00:49:19Oh.
00:49:20No.
00:49:22You okay?
00:49:24How are the e-bites coming?
00:49:26Um, I'm almost finished making the list.
00:49:28Everyone we want to invite is here.
00:49:29Great.
00:49:30And I'll send them out later tonight.
00:49:31All right.
00:49:32We're going to need more activities.
00:49:34And we're going to need more games.
00:49:35And in order for this to work, we're probably going to need more food and decorations.
00:49:39The dance is two days away.
00:49:41I don't know that we're going to pull this off.
00:49:43We'll get there, okay?
00:49:45And you're doing a great job.
00:49:47But right now we should take a break.
00:49:51We should.
00:49:52Definitely.
00:49:52Let's get some fresh air.
00:49:54Come on.
00:49:55It'll all still be here, I promise.
00:49:56Thanks for dinner.
00:50:00You're welcome.
00:50:02This is all so beautiful here.
00:50:07She walks in beauty like the night.
00:50:09Cloudless climbs and starry skies.
00:50:11And all that's best of dark and bright meet in her aspect and her eyes.
00:50:18That was lovely.
00:50:20That was Lord Byron.
00:50:22He was a charmer.
00:50:26I read your poems.
00:50:27You should know.
00:50:30What?
00:50:31How?
00:50:32About your book.
00:50:35You are really talented.
00:50:37Come on.
00:50:38No, I'm serious.
00:50:39They were heartfelt and honest.
00:50:44Raw.
00:50:47You should share them with the world.
00:50:50Or at least, you know, have someone do a reading of them.
00:50:55That'd be amazing.
00:51:00Maybe one day, if I can find the right reader.
00:51:03What about your dream of Paris?
00:51:08Is that still somewhere in your head?
00:51:11Sure.
00:51:12Taking a sabbatical, moving to Paris to write?
00:51:16It's a wonderful dream.
00:51:19It's just a dream.
00:51:20I love Paris, and it is a good dream.
00:51:29I mean, I would love to go there.
00:51:31Yeah, that would be, uh, that'd be fantastic.
00:51:37I imagine.
00:51:40You should go.
00:51:41You should apply for a sabbatical and just see what happens.
00:51:45You have been inspiring your students.
00:51:48You have been inspiring Jenny since she first sat in your class.
00:51:52You inspired me to plan a dance for her.
00:51:56It's time that you were inspired to live out your dream.
00:52:15Where did the others go?
00:52:18They went home to send the Evites, or to leave us alone.
00:52:26Will, there's something I've been scared about lately.
00:52:32Can I talk to you about it?
00:52:34Yes, please.
00:52:40Um, it's about the dance.
00:52:45Last year, it was bad.
00:52:47It started snowing, and I don't like falling snow.
00:52:53When I was younger, we got into a car accident,
00:52:57and I wandered off and got lost in the snow.
00:53:02And that made me scared.
00:53:07I do not like to be scared.
00:53:10That's when I don't talk.
00:53:12Then what do you do?
00:53:21Nothing.
00:53:25When I feel like talking again, I talk.
00:53:28I get to decide.
00:53:29And that makes the scary things not so scary.
00:53:42Currently, 31 degrees and snow falling in 20 minutes.
00:53:46I have to go home.
00:53:48If you're scared, we can keep talking.
00:53:50I can't. I can't talk. I have to go home.
00:53:51No, stop.
00:53:58Jenny.
00:53:59I can help.
00:54:01I don't want your help.
00:54:02I have to go home.
00:54:02No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:54:06How do you feel?
00:54:07I know you've taken on a lot leading the charge with this all lately.
00:54:11I've come to realize that this isn't so much about a dance.
00:54:15This is more about my little girl.
00:54:17It's just growing up.
00:54:19And I want these memories for her to be joyful, you know?
00:54:23Not fearful.
00:54:24And that I can't help but have this gnawing apprehension that I'm not doing enough.
00:54:30Are you kidding me?
00:54:32I don't think I've ever seen a mother do more.
00:54:35All while juggling the possible center and your own social life.
00:54:39It's my social life.
00:54:41You mean my, my failing social life.
00:54:43But that's a whole other story.
00:54:45I don't think it's failing.
00:54:49I quite like your social life at the moment.
00:54:55I do too.
00:54:58I guess this time of the year isn't so...
00:54:59What?
00:55:05Sorry.
00:55:09Ow.
00:55:10Is everything okay?
00:55:15Uh...
00:55:20I'm sorry.
00:55:22I've gotta go.
00:55:24Jenny!
00:55:28Jenny!
00:55:36Hey, sweetheart.
00:55:40You okay?
00:55:42Mm-hmm.
00:55:43I came as soon as it started falling.
00:55:47Where were you?
00:55:50I'm sorry that I wasn't here.
00:55:54I came back as soon as it started.
00:56:03Where were you?
00:56:08With friends.
00:56:12Okay.
00:56:14Well, I'm here now.
00:56:15Do you want to, uh, beat me in a board game?
00:56:22I want to go to bed.
00:56:25Okay.
00:56:30Good night, sweetheart.
00:56:31It was that bad, huh?
00:56:40It was that bad, huh?
00:56:41Not what we expected to happen when we, uh, ever so subtly ditched you.
00:56:47I ran off and left him, and now he is avoiding me.
00:56:51No, no, I'm sure he's not that mad.
00:56:53I guess there go your chances of him being your date for the dance.
00:56:58Caitlin?
00:57:00I probably ruined it with Daniel.
00:57:02I just ran out with barely even saying goodbye.
00:57:06Hmm.
00:57:06Probably.
00:57:07Assumptions again.
00:57:09Seems like you're having trouble communicating with multiple people.
00:57:12I guess.
00:57:15So talk to Jenny.
00:57:17Talk to Daniel.
00:57:18Uh, we need to talk.
00:57:21Hey, Vicky.
00:57:22This guy's like Beetlejuice.
00:57:24Say his name three times and he appears.
00:57:27Hi, Daniel.
00:57:32About last night, I am so sorry.
00:57:35What?
00:57:36No.
00:57:37No, that, no, that's, that's no problem at all.
00:57:39Honestly, I understand.
00:57:40It's about the dance.
00:57:42No, just not, not here.
00:57:44Is there somewhere we can go to talk?
00:57:46Uh, yeah.
00:57:49Hey, Jenny, um, is everything all right?
00:57:53I, I really hate to do this to you two days in a row,
00:58:03but I, I have to go talk to my daughter.
00:58:06Yes, you two have a lot to sort out.
00:58:14Everything okay in here?
00:58:18You want to talk about it?
00:58:22What if there was something
00:58:26that you really cared about,
00:58:29but then you ruined it?
00:58:30Oh, honey, I highly doubt that you've ruined anything.
00:58:37You know, sometimes things happen
00:58:38and we make assumptions about them.
00:58:40And then we realize later that our assumptions were way off.
00:58:47Do you think it's possible that maybe what you think
00:58:49you've ruined, you haven't?
00:58:52I guess maybe not.
00:58:54The only way to know for sure is to ask the tough questions.
00:58:59Not be afraid of the answers.
00:59:02And know that you are a very good person, Jenny.
00:59:06With the best of intentions.
00:59:09And the rest will just fall into place.
00:59:12I should probably take my own advice.
00:59:17So everything will be okay?
00:59:21I can't promise you that everything will be okay,
00:59:24but I can promise you that if things aren't,
00:59:27I will always be here.
00:59:31And I love you so much.
00:59:33Thanks, Mom.
00:59:37You feel better?
00:59:38Not all the way better.
00:59:40But better.
00:59:54I love you.
00:59:55I love you.
01:00:03Looking for Daniel?
01:00:06Yeah.
01:00:08Maybe.
01:00:10He just left.
01:00:10You can still catch him.
01:00:18Oh, uh, wait.
01:00:20I just wanted to, uh,
01:00:23to say thank you for helping me with everything.
01:00:27It was my pleasure.
01:00:29Would you like to have dinner?
01:00:30Are you asking me out on a date?
01:00:33Oh, uh, you don't have to if you don't want to.
01:00:37I'd love to.
01:00:38Okay, uh, great.
01:00:40Um, six tonight, uh, I'll, I'll send you the details.
01:00:44I have to get everything ready.
01:00:46Everything?
01:00:52Will?
01:00:53Are you here?
01:01:00Surprise.
01:01:07Wow.
01:01:09This is so cool.
01:01:11Thanks.
01:01:12I've been working on it all day.
01:01:15I thought you were mad at me.
01:01:17Mad?
01:01:18Why?
01:01:19Because I got upset yesterday.
01:01:22No.
01:01:24You were scared.
01:01:25I'm sorry I couldn't help you be not scared.
01:01:28But I wouldn't be mad at you for that.
01:01:32Well, do you like me?
01:01:35Yes, I like you.
01:01:39Do you like me enough to be my date to the dance?
01:01:42Yes.
01:01:47Is that a no or are you just not talking again?
01:01:50Do you like me enough to be my date to the dance?
01:02:10Yes.
01:02:16One tray.
01:02:21Wow.
01:02:23Wow, this is...
01:02:24A surprise.
01:02:25A wonderful surprise.
01:02:27My friend, Maren, uh, owns it.
01:02:29Her daughter used to come to the possible center
01:02:31and I asked her if I could turn it into Paris for the night.
01:02:35Well, it's perfect.
01:02:37To complete the lock.
01:02:39Of course.
01:02:44Well, c'est magnifique.
01:02:46How's it look?
01:02:47Perfect.
01:02:48Yeah?
01:02:48Yes.
01:02:49I love the beret, by the way.
01:02:53Um, to Paris.
01:02:56To you.
01:03:02I got you something.
01:03:03Okay.
01:03:08I bought it to inspire you because you've inspired so many people.
01:03:17Wow.
01:03:22Melanie, this is...
01:03:25I mean, we have our own Parisian cafe.
01:03:30You know, actually, I've been thinking a lot about what you said.
01:03:35About taking a sabbatical.
01:03:37You're gonna go?
01:03:37I mean, it wouldn't be until the next school year.
01:03:41And it's not for sure.
01:03:42But there's a writers in residency program at the Shakespeare and Company in Paris.
01:03:49You should do it.
01:03:50I haven't decided yet.
01:03:53Why wouldn't you go?
01:03:55Wow.
01:03:58Because for the first time in a long time, it feels like...
01:04:02here is where I should really be.
01:04:04Well, Miss Austin?
01:04:13Mr. Hartman?
01:04:18I had an excellent time.
01:04:20So did I.
01:04:22And Paris was better than I could ever have imagined.
01:04:27Well, I'm no literary giant.
01:04:29No, you're something better.
01:04:33Look, I know we're both grown adults,
01:04:35but I was wondering if maybe you would do me the honor of being my date to the dads.
01:04:42Yes.
01:04:45Mom?
01:04:49Hi.
01:04:50You and Mr. Hartman?
01:04:52You and Will.
01:04:53Why didn't you tell me?
01:04:54Why didn't you tell me?
01:04:56I...I...
01:04:57There wasn't anything to tell you until a second ago.
01:05:01I'm...
01:05:01Are you mad?
01:05:03No.
01:05:04Not if you are happy.
01:05:06I am.
01:05:07And you too.
01:05:08Mr. Hartman, I should hear back from Hollinger any day now.
01:05:12That's amazing.
01:05:13I'm proud of you.
01:05:14Wait, what?
01:05:14You applied to Hollinger.
01:05:16And...and you knew.
01:05:19And you didn't.
01:05:21He wrote my recommendation letter.
01:05:23There's some...some miscommunication here.
01:05:25I'm sorry.
01:05:26Um...
01:05:27I mean, you guys figured out how to plan two separate Christmas dances,
01:05:29so we could probably...
01:05:30Daniel.
01:05:32Wait a minute.
01:05:34Two Christmas dances?
01:05:40Jenny, wait!
01:05:44It was supposed to be a surprise.
01:05:46You didn't listen to me.
01:05:47I don't want to go to the dance.
01:05:49I know, but that's why I wanted to do this.
01:05:52I...I...I wanted it to be a dance that you would want to go to.
01:05:56You never asked me what I wanted!
01:06:00Jenny, I...
01:06:08Um, Will, why don't you...we'll go wait outside.
01:06:10I'll be out there in a second, okay?
01:06:11I'll give you a ride home.
01:06:12I'll give you a ride home.
01:06:13Yeah.
01:06:22Dance.
01:06:23College.
01:06:25Heard a boyfriend.
01:06:27Apparently, I don't know anything about my daughter.
01:06:31Hey, Mom, that's not true.
01:06:32No, it is true.
01:06:33And you know what?
01:06:34I...I should be spending time with her, not doing...
01:06:46I think you should go.
01:06:49I need to spend some time with my daughter alone.
01:06:54We'll talk soon.
01:06:55We'll talk soon.
01:07:12Aren't you gonna eat breakfast?
01:07:16Jenny.
01:07:23Hey.
01:07:26Now we're not talking at all, and she won't even answer my texts.
01:07:30How did we get to this?
01:07:33Oh, Mel.
01:07:36I just want her to be happy.
01:07:39Hey, I see you and Jenny together all the time.
01:07:45And she's happy.
01:07:47Especially when you're happy.
01:07:49Since you've been seeing Daniel, this is the happiest that I've seen you in...
01:07:53a long time.
01:07:55Especially at Christmas.
01:08:00I just feel like I've ruined everything.
01:08:09And I don't have the answers.
01:08:10Then ask the questions.
01:08:18What do you want?
01:08:21What does Jenny want?
01:08:22Not what you want for Jenny.
01:08:25But what does Jenny want for herself?
01:08:26How do I talk to her when I don't know where she is?
01:08:31Where has she been going lately when she needed a break?
01:08:34Yeah.
01:08:42Jenny!
01:08:48Wow.
01:08:55Jenny?
01:08:56Hey, this is beautiful.
01:09:02Hey, how are you?
01:09:08I needed some time to think.
01:09:10You did all of this?
01:09:13This is the dance that you were planning.
01:09:17There's snowman cookies.
01:09:19I made them in honor of you.
01:09:22Do you like it?
01:09:24I love it.
01:09:27I am so sorry that I wasn't open with you.
01:09:30I just... I wanted it to be a surprise.
01:09:35I wanted to show you that I was doing enough.
01:09:38Doing enough?
01:09:41After the dance last year, I...
01:09:44I felt that I needed to do more.
01:09:47But you'd do everything for me.
01:09:51I wanted to do the dance for you so you could be happy.
01:09:56And so that you could see I can do this.
01:10:00Why would I need to see that?
01:10:02So you won't have to worry when I go to college.
01:10:06You don't have to worry, Mom.
01:10:11I'll be okay.
01:10:17And when things aren't okay, you'll always be here.
01:10:21Loving me.
01:10:23Always.
01:10:24Always.
01:10:25Always.
01:10:26Okay.
01:10:27This came for you.
01:10:41Looks like you got in.
01:10:44I want you to go.
01:10:46You've earned it.
01:10:55I'm so proud of you.
01:10:57Thanks.
01:11:04You got the foosball table?
01:11:07Well, we would have had a ping-pong table,
01:11:09but someone else rented it.
01:11:12That was you.
01:11:13That was you.
01:11:16What are we going to do about the dance?
01:11:18What do you mean?
01:11:19This is amazing.
01:11:21No, your dance.
01:11:23I didn't even think about that.
01:11:25We could combine the dances.
01:11:27Right here.
01:11:28Are you sure you want to do that?
01:11:30Yes, of course.
01:11:31Okay.
01:11:32I will contact the BTA
01:11:34and see if I can get them on board.
01:11:36All right.
01:11:37Start making phone calls.
01:11:38Okay.
01:11:39Come with us.
01:11:43Mr. Hartman needs that in the barn.
01:11:46Christmas decorations coming through.
01:11:48Bring that over to the DJ booth.
01:11:52Hey.
01:11:54Hey.
01:11:55Congratulations.
01:11:56This is really bringing everyone together.
01:11:58Oh, well, this is all Jenny, really.
01:12:02I knew you two would figure it out eventually.
01:12:04Yeah, I, uh, I don't really know how to thank you for all of your help.
01:12:10I just hung a few lights.
01:12:12It's...
01:12:13You've been a real support to me.
01:12:18No, I mean, the feeling goes both ways.
01:12:20If it wasn't for you, I would have never taken the sabbatical.
01:12:24You're doing it.
01:12:25Yeah, yeah.
01:12:26I-I put in for it.
01:12:27You know.
01:12:29I mean, like you said, it is something I need to do.
01:12:33So you'll be leaving at a...
01:12:34At the end of the school year.
01:12:35Yeah.
01:12:38I'm happy for you.
01:12:43Yeah, it'll be good.
01:12:45It'll give me some time to think, figure things out.
01:12:48But, you know, I guess that's what everybody needs sometimes, right?
01:12:53Space?
01:12:55I guess.
01:13:00We're still gonna go to the dance together.
01:13:02Yeah.
01:13:03Yeah, of course.
01:13:04Of course.
01:13:05Okay.
01:13:06Well, I-I should let you get back to this,
01:13:08because you're busy and these are still tangled.
01:13:12Okay.
01:13:13Yeah.
01:13:14Okay.
01:13:15See you later.
01:13:18We almost have everything done.
01:13:20It's going to work.
01:13:21Great.
01:13:23Are you okay, Mom?
01:13:24Yeah.
01:13:25Yes, of course.
01:13:26Um...
01:13:27We gotta go home.
01:13:28We have a dance to get ready for.
01:13:29Okay.
01:13:30Okay.
01:13:35Happy, happy holiday.
01:13:39Oh!
01:13:40You look magnificent.
01:13:50In the words of a young Jenny Austin.
01:13:54I know.
01:13:57Jenny!
01:13:59Come on in.
01:14:01Don't you look dapper, young man.
01:14:07Jenny!
01:14:08What do you think?
01:14:18I think...
01:14:21you're beautiful.
01:14:25I know.
01:14:31All right, shall we go?
01:14:33Hm?
01:14:39Jenny, you okay?
01:14:41The snow.
01:15:01Jenny.
01:15:03Breathe.
01:15:04Jenny.
01:15:05We can talk through this.
01:15:06Mm-mm-mm.
01:15:07We can't talk away the snow.
01:15:09You are scared of the snow.
01:15:11No, Will, don't go!
01:15:13Will!
01:15:14Will!
01:15:15Will!
01:15:16Will!
01:15:17You are scared of the snow.
01:15:24No, Will, don't go.
01:15:36Will!
01:15:41When there's moisture in the air
01:15:43and the atmospheric temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit,
01:15:46snow starts to fall.
01:15:48I do not like falling snow.
01:15:50Snow forms when water crystallizes in the air.
01:15:53But when it's colder outside,
01:15:55the water doesn't stick together as much.
01:15:56But when it's not as cold out, then the moisture in the water...
01:15:59Will, you are talking a lot again.
01:16:01I know.
01:16:02I talk a lot when I'm excited about something.
01:16:06You are excited about snow?
01:16:08No.
01:16:11I'm excited about you.
01:16:17What about you?
01:16:18You're okay?
01:16:20I'm okay.
01:16:22You're okay?
01:16:41I'm okay.
01:16:52Hi, welcome to the Holiday Ball for All.
01:17:22Hey, Mrs. Hawkins, thanks for helping make this dance happen.
01:17:32Oh, no, Jenny, thank you.
01:17:38You two have fun.
01:17:43Hey, you okay?
01:17:50Winter blues striking again?
01:17:52No.
01:17:53No, I'm fine.
01:17:54Okay, no, I'm not.
01:17:56What's the problem?
01:17:58Oh, I get it.
01:17:59He's taking a sabbatical in Paris next year.
01:18:08And he wants space.
01:18:10Well, why don't you be a part of that space?
01:18:14I mean, with Jenny going out of town, you are going to have a lot of free time on your
01:18:19hands.
01:18:20What are you saying?
01:18:21Go to Paris, too?
01:18:23Why not?
01:18:24Because I don't know that Daniel wants me to go with him.
01:18:28If he did, he would have said something.
01:18:30Mom, you are assuming again.
01:18:32Okay.
01:18:33You do so much to make me happy.
01:18:35To make everyone at the Possible Center happy.
01:18:38But Mr. Hartman makes you happy.
01:18:41And you deserve that.
01:18:43You like him?
01:18:45I do.
01:18:46Well, tell him.
01:18:48I'm not sure how.
01:18:59Show him.
01:19:02That's good.
01:19:15Hi, everyone.
01:19:18I hope you're all having a great time.
01:19:21Today has had a lot of surprises.
01:19:24And now we have one more.
01:19:27Please welcome to the stage the person who helped me make this dance.
01:19:32My mom, Melanie Austin.
01:19:34Hello, everyone.
01:19:46What a beautiful night.
01:19:48I would really like to acknowledge how beautiful we all are in our own unique ways.
01:19:55More often than not, we make assumptions that people will judge us if they get a glimpse of
01:20:02that uniqueness.
01:20:03And those assumptions can be right.
01:20:07People can be judgmental.
01:20:09And so then we dim that beauty before we give it a chance to shine.
01:20:16But oftentimes those assumptions are wrong.
01:20:21And I would like to read a poem on that matter.
01:20:26By a very talented poet.
01:20:29Assuming he's all right with it.
01:20:33Uh.
01:20:34This poem was written by our very own Daniel Hartman.
01:20:39A voice inside so quick to chide.
01:20:51Casting doubts both far and wide.
01:20:54You're not enough.
01:20:56It often cries.
01:20:59Planting fears and spreading lies.
01:21:02Assumptions form.
01:21:03We start to fear that other eyes will sneer and jeer.
01:21:08But listen close and you will see a strength within a bold decree.
01:21:16Question the thoughts that cloud your mind.
01:21:19Leave those fears and doubts behind.
01:21:24For in your heart a truth so bright.
01:21:28Silence the doubt.
01:21:30And step into the light.
01:21:33I hope that you, you didn't mind.
01:21:51Huh.
01:21:52Not at all.
01:21:53I was honored.
01:21:55It's a good poem.
01:21:58You're incredible.
01:22:01In every way.
01:22:03What you've done for your daughter.
01:22:05For the students.
01:22:06For me.
01:22:08To inspire me to go for what I want.
01:22:11What is that Mr. Hartman?
01:22:14What do you want?
01:22:17I want you to come with me to Paris.
01:22:21Explore with me.
01:22:23Laugh with me.
01:22:24Just be with me.
01:22:27Yes.
01:22:30Yeah?
01:22:31Yes.
01:22:32Great.
01:22:33Because I don't want this to end.
01:22:36This is just the beginning.
01:22:57Oh.
01:22:58Yeah.
01:22:59That's good.
01:23:00Yeah.
01:23:01Yeah.
01:23:02I love it.
01:23:04That's it.
01:23:05It's ridiculous.
01:23:06It's brutal.
01:23:07Yeah.
01:23:08Yeah.
01:23:10Oh, my God.
01:23:40A time of year, making plans to get together.
01:23:45Memories that will last forever.
01:23:48This love, oh, it's this love.
01:23:53And I want to share this Christmas with you.
01:23:58Oh, this Christmas with you.
