"It was time for us as a country to shake things up and, you know, try something different," the actress tells reporters of her support of Trump at TCA.

00:00Roseanne Barr told reporters she thinks she'd be a better president than Oprah Winfrey,
00:04Susan Sarandon and probably even President Trump.
00:07Barr is a known Trump supporter, and it didn't take long before the subject of the current
00:12president came up during a Monday panel previewing the return of ABC's Roseanne
00:16at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour.
00:19ABC is bringing the working-class Conner family back to primetime, and in the new season,
00:25Barr and John Goodman's leading characters are Trump supporters.
00:28When asked about this, Barr said,
00:30In the Roseanne show, I've always tried to have it be a true reflection of the society we live in.
00:35I feel like half the people voted for Trump and half didn't, so it's just realistic.
00:39She added that she's tried to make the show a realistic portrayal of the working class, in particular.
00:44Barr continued,
00:45And in fact, it was working-class people who elected Trump, so I felt that was very real
00:50and something that needed to be discussed, and especially about polarization in the family
00:54and people actually hating other people for the way they voted.
00:57Which I feel is not American.
00:59Barr reunited with Roseanne's entire original cast on the Connors' famed couch.
01:04The season premiere of the ABC reboot finds Roseanne and her sister Jackie, played by Laurie Metcalfe,
01:09embroiled in a fight. Jackie, as it turns out, voted for Hillary Clinton, while Roseanne is proudly Team Trump.
01:15During her 30 minutes before Reporters Monday, Barr was pushed multiple times to explain how her politics impacted the show.
01:22Showrunner Bruce Helford said the writing staff had a lot of discussions about the character's personal beliefs,
01:28and it was really about getting dialogue going in an honest way. He added,
01:33There's no agenda on anybody's part.
01:35And later, when Barr was asked about whether she'd vote for Oprah if the mogul ran for president in 2020,
01:40she hesitated, saying,
01:42I do love Oprah. Of course I love Oprah like everybody else. But you know what?
01:47I think it was time for us as a country to shake things up and, you know, try something different.
01:51When another reporter asked, what about Susan Sarandon for president, Barr replied,
01:55Actually, I think I'd be a better president than Oprah and Susan Sarandon, probably even President Trump.
02:01And I did run in 2012.
02:03Showrunner Helford also said that ABC largely caters to upscale, democratic viewers.
02:08So Roseanne will serve as a way to cater to working-class Americans, as the show originally did in the 1990s.
02:14Helford told reporters,
02:15There's no show that's dealing in the same way with these kinds of issues, he added.
02:19We have a beloved place in the hearts of American viewers.
02:22I wanted to do something that would heal things and put all the cards on the table.
02:26Roseanne will return with a special hour-long premiere Tuesday, March 27th at 8pm on ABC.
02:32After that, it will air half-hour episodes in its regular time slot on Tuesdays at 8pm.
02:37So, will you be tuning in for Roseanne's return? Be sure to let me know in the comments.
