Transcript
00:00This is not a drill, people. Black Panther has screened and the Marvel Studios
00:09superhero film is making a powerful first impression. Early reactions are pouring in
00:14from those lucky enough to catch the premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood,
00:17and since no reviews have been published so far, this is the first word fans are getting
00:21as they eagerly await the movie's February 16 release. Ryan Coogler's film, which stars
00:26Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa slash Black Panther, as well as Michael B. Jordan,
00:29Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright, has so far enjoyed overwhelmingly
00:35positive reactions. Viewers have been raving about the performances, story, costumes,
00:40direction and the on-screen creation of the African Kingdom of Wakanda.
00:44Black reviewers and geek sites in particular were excited about the positive
00:47representations of Black women. Natasha Alford, an editor at The Griot, made the point
00:51that there will be a generation of kids growing up and seeing superheroes that look
00:55like them. The Los Angeles Times' Travelle Anderson called Black Panther a love letter
01:00about blackness. Rebecca Theodore Vachon, who has written for Forbes and RogerEbert.com,
01:05was one among many who felt that Wright Shuri and Guerrero's Okoye were important and
01:09necessary portraits of black women not seen before in superhero movies. Many black
01:14reviewers praised Coogler's deft handling of issues of identity and imperialism as well.
01:19Meanwhile, Jen Yamato from the Los Angeles Times was also full of enthusiasm about the wider
01:23themes Black Panther tackled, such as representation and identity.
01:27SlashFilm's Peter Saretta dubbed the movie Marvel's most political film and is already calling
01:32for awards recognition, tweeting,
01:34Ryan Coogler knocked it out of the park. Some great sequences presented in a single take
01:39slash shot. If this movie isn't nominated for costume, art and production design awards
01:43next year, I would be seriously shocked.
01:46Uproxx's Mike Ryan also commented on the political nature of the film, noting that
01:49Black Panther is a movie with a lot to say.
01:52Fandango's Eric Davis summed things up like this.
01:55100% African and it's dope AF.
