Do reviewers feel the love tonight?

00:00The Lion King pounces into theaters on July 19th, and the reviews have officially started

00:10roaring in. So are the critics feeling the love tonight? Unfortunately, not really.

00:14The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy praised the technology, but yearned to see something new

00:18from the plot, writing,

00:26Vox's Alyssa Wilkinson was equally disappointed by the new movie's fidelity to the

00:29original writing. As an expansion of the 1994 film, The Lion King says and adds little.

00:34It's a half-hour longer than the original, but for no discernible reason. And Screen Crush's

00:38Matt Singer had similar feelings, calling the film a bad Xerox of the original.

00:46But there have been some positive reviews. The LA Times' Kenneth Turan noted,

00:50though the new ground it breaks is visual rather than dramatic or emotional, this is a polished,

00:55satisfying entertainment that just about dares you to look a gift lion in the mouth.

00:59And Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt says that despite not presenting much new when it comes to story,

01:03The Lion King still has something to offer, writing,

01:06The reboot was never terribly necessary, maybe, but it's good still to be king.

01:10Oh no, it's a little lion!

01:17The best summary of the discomfort some critics are feeling about the movie might come from Time's Stephanie Zaharic,

01:22This Lion King is a faithful remake, and in terms of its technology, it's at times quite beautiful to behold.

01:28But there's no sense of wonder in this new Lion King. Its most visible attribute is ambition.

01:33It works hard for the money. Chiefly, yours.
