Dove Cameron Talks The Descendants 2
Transcript
00:00A human being, I think, develops these, like, walls and, like, sort of coping mechanisms
00:04with how to simultaneously, like, let the inside world in but not too close.
00:09And if you can imagine being, like, a normal human experiencing that, Mal obviously has
00:13dealt with, like, neglect and, like, zero support, and she's her only—she's her only
00:19sense of support and love for her whole life.
00:21And so now that she has real love, it's very hard for her to accept.
00:26And also I think—and I can definitely relate to this, and I think a lot of people can in
00:29the sense that, like, when you deal with conflict and when you deal with hitting a wall, it's
00:35very easy to focus on that rather than focusing on yourself.
00:38And then when everything's right in the world, everybody's like, be yourself, do whatever
00:41you want.
00:42You're like, wait, wait, wait, what do you mean?
00:43Who am I?
00:44And you're like, I don't know how to do that.
00:45So that's kind of—she, like, loses herself and finds herself and then loses herself and
00:50then finally finds herself at the end.
00:51But she goes through a bit of, like, a mid-life crisis.
00:54And it's the struggles with Ben as well, like, how do we start with that relationship?
00:59This is my favorite thing ever, that you're so up and up with, like, the relationships.
01:03He's like, and what about Ben?
01:04And you're, like, sitting there, you're like, talk to me about Ben!
01:07You need to know!
01:08Stroking your facial hair.
01:09Um, yeah.
01:10Yes!
01:11That's all I wanted!
01:12He gave it to me!
01:13Um, so, yeah, the struggle is mainly with Ben because Ben—and I relate to this so hard,
01:20again—because Ben is such a love and really does love her for everything that she is, so
01:26authentically, she doesn't—that's new to her, and it's almost damaging in a way because
01:32it's so—it then does give her the space to explore all of the stuff that she's never
01:37even seen of herself with another human being who's just holding her hand and being like,
01:41okay, baby, like, everything you do is good.
01:43And I've definitely been through that where it's like, oh—because then you're forced
01:48to recognize yourself for the first time.
01:51And that can be a scary, weird thing when you have an identity and it's not really who
01:55you are.
01:56So Ben—Ben definitely is sort of the catalyst that eventually brings her about to a healthier
02:00self.
02:01And we saw a couple scenes.
02:03It looks like the new BKs, she knows a little bit about them.
02:09Yes.
02:10And—
02:11This is like my favorite thing.
02:12We're learning as viewers to know about them, but how much do we know—how much does she
02:18know then?
02:19So this is like my favorite thing, and nobody's asked me this, but this is one of my favorite
02:23things about Descendants, too, is these new characters.
02:26So basically, there's stuff that is alluded to in the film, but then there's also stuff
02:32that me and Kenny and the actors just made up that you will see in the film that we were
02:37like, I think this is what happened.
02:39And then that was what sort of like inspired their relationships.
02:42And so basically—and I get the lines blurred, like is that really what happened or is that
02:46just what we decided?
02:47Yeah.
02:48Yeah.
02:49Uma was sort of a part of Mal's group of like her gang.
02:54And then when Mal chose them sort of as her like group and excluded Uma, that created
03:00all of that tension.
03:01Right.
03:02Like you could have given me this life, like you are the daughter of the most powerful
03:07one and you like cast me out.
03:08Well, because when Mal decides something, that's like law in that realm.
03:11Right.
03:12And so it really damaged Uma.
03:13And so that's where all of her animosity comes from.
03:16And then Kenny and I and Thomas, who plays Harry Hook, also decided that Harry Hook was
03:22Mal's first love, which is sort of what gives them their weird tension and why he hates
03:26her because she's moved on, right?
03:28And that's why he has all that tension with Ben.
03:31So there's all this like weird backstory stuff.
03:33And then obviously Gil, Gaston's son, is just kind of alarmed for the ride.
03:36He doesn't have any animosity with anybody.
03:37Come on.
03:38Yeah.
03:39He's like, yeah, cool.
03:40Whatever.
03:41I'm here for it.
03:42Yeah.
03:43Can you pick your favorite baby, your favorite song of this one or is it all meshed together?
03:50Yeah.
03:51I think that the opening one is definitely my favorite to like listen to because it's very
03:56radio friendly.
03:57Very like sort of alternative pop amazingness.
04:01And we got to like, I got to like scream in it and like skrelt, screaming and belting.
04:07And it's also the most fun to perform.
04:08But I also love the closing number and the duet between Mal and Evie.
04:13So really, really, we elevated the music this time.
