The Hollywood Reporter braved the crowds to get hands-on time with this year's biggest titles (and a few indie sleepers).
Transcript
00:00E3 took over Los Angeles and the gaming world this week, so what was the biggest news to
00:04come out of the convention?
00:05I'm joined by The Hollywood Reporter's gaming editor and Heat Vision Breakdown host Patrick
00:09Shanley to break down, no pun intended, the biggest three moments from E3, so Patrick,
00:15take it away.
00:16Nice word of play for starters.
00:17You're not real, you're a clown.
00:21First up we have Final Fantasy VII, it is a remake of the classic 1997 Square RPG.
00:27This was first announced in 2015, and this is the first time we're actually seeing gameplay
00:31footage.
00:32We have a release date next March in 2020.
00:35We also got to play the game, or I got to play the game, and lucky people got to play the
00:38game at this year's E3.
00:40They completely rehauled everything in this game.
00:42The visuals are different, there's voice acting, the original was text-based.
00:46The gameplay is completely different, it's much more of an action game as opposed to a
00:49turn-based role-playing game, which is what it used to be.
00:51This was by far my favorite thing that I saw at this year's convention.
00:55It's also, full disclosure, my favorite game anyway, so I'm a little bit biased.
01:02Hold on to that hatred.
01:04That's like the ultimate fan experience, and it sounds like fans are going to love it.
01:07They will.
01:08Now, EA also showed off some gameplay footage from Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, so what
01:13was the response to that like?
01:15At first, the response was not positive.
01:17People have been waiting for this game and got very excited for this game when they found
01:20out that Respawn Entertainment was working on it.
01:22Respawn is known for the Titanfall series, they also released Apex Legends this year,
01:25they have a good pedigree of making good games.
01:27The gameplay footage that they showed at EA Play on Saturday was a little underwhelming
01:31for fans.
01:32They didn't like the look of the game, they didn't think the gameplay was as tight as
01:34they thought it was going to be.
01:35I've played the game, and I was on the fence before I played it.
01:39After playing it, I want to put all those concerns to bed.
01:42This game is amazing, it is very, very tight, it's super deep gameplay, it's a lot like
01:46the Dark Souls games, if people know those, so a lot of parrying, really deep combat, lots
01:51of different enemies, and also it looks amazing.
01:53It's a new Star Wars experience, a new hero, we have familiar faces, and a brand new droid.
01:58There's a brand new droid, his name is BD1, BuddyDroid1.
02:01He's adorable, he's like a little chicken dog that runs around, he lives on your back, he's
02:04amazing.
02:05Aw, he sounds so cute!
02:06He's adorable.
02:07And speaking of cute, Nintendo offered a look at The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening.
02:10Now, why was this such a big deal?
02:12Okay, so Link's Awakening was originally a Game Boy game, it came out in 1992, 1991.
02:16It was a lot different than what we saw of this year's iteration, which is coming out
02:20on the Switch.
02:21It kind of has a tilt-shifted art style, it looks a lot like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
02:26the classic animated films from the 60s.
02:28It has that dollhouse feel to it, but they also completely redid everything, there's a whole
02:32bunch of references to other Nintendo games.
02:35The gameplay is really fun and satisfying, it feels like classic Zelda, but in a whole
02:39new way.
02:40It's appealing to old people, young people, newcomers, people who are familiar with the
02:44old game.
02:45It's one of my ones to watch for next year.
02:46It sounds like you had the best time ever.
02:47I had a really great time.
02:48I can't feel my feet, but it was a good time.
02:50Well, for all of Patrick's E3 coverage and everything you need to know about the convention,
02:53you can head to THR.com.
02:54Thanks for all your insight.
02:55Of course, thank you!
