00:00This is a chance of a lifetime for me. I have to take full advantage of it and prove to the public and to myself that unless I can go to the next level, I belong to be the top echelon.
00:30I can't afford to lose. I don't want to step back two steps. I'll step up two steps. This is an opportunity for the world to see what I have and it couldn't be a better opponent. Couldn't be a better opponent. I'm a better fighter. He doesn't bring the talent I have. I know it can be. He doesn't bring the hand speed and foot speed. He's never fought anyone like me. It's going to be a knockout. I didn't get paid overtime.
01:00Botha vs. Briggs is brought to you by Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts and by Budweiser, the undisputed, undefeated king of beers. This Bud's for you.
01:22Pay-per-view distributed by Showtime Event Television.
01:52We're back in the Mark G. Edis Arena, a room we opened in 1990 with Thomas Hearns. This arena named in the memory of Donald Trump's close friend and colleague who died tragically 10 years ago.
02:03Capacity crowd for boxing. Perhaps here tonight, they hope, over 5,000 settling in for a big night at the fights.
02:11Our main event will feature former IVF heavyweight champion Francois Botha, known as the White Buffalo. This is arrival earlier tonight. He enters the scene with hopes that a victory later will bring him closer to another world title opportunity.
02:26While he has won 39 of 41 fights, perhaps best known for his two losses as his stock went up in defeat against Mike Tyson and Michael Moore.
02:35Tonight, the South African native who now lives in Las Vegas in a career crossroads fight.
02:40But standing in his path is the man with the golden dreadlocks, number seven heavyweight contender Shannon Briggs out of Brooklyn, New York, making his way into the arena earlier this evening.
02:51He took the boxing world by storm a couple of years ago when he upset former heavyweight champion George Foreman in a controversial majority decision.
03:00He hails from Brownsville, the same neighborhood that produced former champions Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe, and looking to catapult himself back to another shot at the heavyweight crown.
03:08His only attempt, a loss to Lennox Lewis.
03:12Hello again, everybody. I'm Steve Albert. The heavyweight division is currently in a state of utter confusion.
03:20So much is up in the air. It appears now that Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis will ultimately get it on in the rematch.
03:26Mike Tyson, who comes off a questionable performance against Francois Botha, is preparing to announce his next fight, possibly within a few days.
03:35Will he ever return, though, to championship four?
03:37Then you've got the next generation, like Grant, Ibe Abuchi, Tua, and Rahman.
03:42But their status seems to be on perpetual hold.
03:45Botha is here tonight by virtue of a loss, while we still wonder if Shannon Briggs, by all accounts a talented fighter, is championship material.
03:53He lost to Lennox Lewis, and many criticized his decision win over George Foreman.
03:58While so many issues in the heavyweight division remain unresolved,
04:01the winner of tonight's main event could very well place himself in title contention once again.
04:07And with that, let me bring on my ringside partners, the fight doctor, Ferdie Pacheco.
04:11And, Ferdie, is there more pressure on Francois Botha to win here tonight?
04:15Well, absolutely, because he's at a plateau where if he doesn't win tonight,
04:19he goes over the edge into that abyss called the trial horse.
04:25I mean, the contenders that never will make it.
04:27So, with the scarce money, he has to win.
04:30He has to win here, or his career is, for all intents and purposes, downhill.
04:34All right, we turn to our other partner, Bobby Ches.
04:37What about Shannon Briggs?
04:39A lot of folks think he's in line for a fight with Mike Tyson in the near future.
04:42Is he at risk tonight?
04:44Well, Steve, every time you set foot in the ring against another fighter,
04:46you put your future and your body at risk.
04:48But the risk-to-reward ratio here for Shannon Briggs tonight is nothing short of excellence.
04:53On paper, against both, it doesn't appear as if Shannon Briggs could lose.
04:56Skill for skill, he is the superior fighter.
04:58However, the intangibles, the things you can't put on paper and you can't measure, could be a big factor.
05:03But either way, Shannon Briggs has to win by definitive decision or by knockout
05:07if he wants to go on and do better things and brighten his future.
05:09All right, it's Botha versus Briggs later tonight in our main event.
05:12For more on that, let's check in with our Jim Cray.
05:14Jim?
05:15All right, thank you very much, Steve.
05:16Back in the dressing room with Francois Botha-France.
05:19How much have you been kicking yourself with that loss to Mike Tyson, that right hand, back on January 16th?
05:24Constantly, I mean, I keep thinking about it, and, you know, it's like a nightmare.
05:29But, you know, one thing about boxing, you've got to keep going on.
05:33You can't go and lie down.
05:35Now, you have said just yesterday to us that you feel that Briggs is a tougher opponent than Tyson.
05:41Why?
05:42I believe so, because mainly of his size, his height, and he's a little bit faster than Tyson,
05:49and he's not so predictable.
05:50I mean, Mike's very predictable, and, you know, styles make fights.
05:55I believe this is a different style, and I believe it'll be a little bit tougher than Mike.
06:00Fran, should you lose this tonight, would it be virtually impossible for you to come back
06:04and get any kind of title shot?
06:06Oh, no, you know, I don't believe so.
06:08I believe that as a fighter, I'm very much in demand.
06:11And, I mean, Evander Holyfield showed us so that, you know, when people think you're finished,
06:16you came back and you won the heavyweight championship again.
06:18And, you know, we'll just have to see.
06:21But I know that I gave myself a couple of more years of boxing, and I'm going to do it all I can,
06:25and hopefully I'll be a heavyweight champion again.
06:29Best of luck to you.
06:29We look forward to the fight.
06:31All right, let's send it back now, back out to ringside, and Steve Albert.
06:34All right, Jim, the always congenial Francois Botha.
06:36Tonight, our host venue, the Mark G. Edis Arena and the Trump Taj Mahal.
06:40Straight ahead from the Mark G. Edis Arena in Atlantic City, our first bout.
06:44As the super middleweight takes center stage, highly regarded Omar Sheikah against Kevin Pompey.
06:53Let's take a look at Kevin Pompey, a tale of two careers, winless his last six,
06:58lost 11 of his last 17, a list of opponents that includes recognizable names,
07:04split a pair with Harold Frazier, lost to Buddy McGirt, Troy Waters, Laurent Bedwani,
07:09had a draw with Donnie Lalonde.
07:10His career, though, began in more promising fashion.
07:14In fact, prior to his downslide, which began in 93, he was 28-4-1,
07:18the high point winning the USBA welterweight belt in 92.
07:22Ferdie, even though he has struggled of late, could his experience be a factor,
07:26or is he simply tailor-made for Omar Sheikah?
07:29I think the latter is tailor-made.
07:31Anytime you've got experience against a very good fighter like Sheikah,
07:34it's inevitable that Sheikah will overwhelm him.
07:37He is in his last days, the last days of Pompey.
07:40Oh!
07:41I had a feeling we might hear that.
07:43Let's take a look at his opponent, Omar Sheikah, 17-1, 12 knockouts,
07:48made his pro debut in 97 after a very, very good amateur career.
07:52Opened his pro career at the age of 20 with 12 fights in one year.
07:56He won all 12 after going 14-0 with nine knockouts.
08:00His first and only loss, a decision to a guy named Tony Booth in England.
08:04But since the loss, he's knocked out his last three, all within three.
08:08Bobby, how good is Sheikah?
08:10Well, you know, Omar Sheikah's been brought along, Steve, very carefully.
08:12He's somewhat of an offensive machine,
08:14but tonight becomes somewhat of a proving ground for him.
08:16If he can take Kevin Pompey to task, take him out and handle him well,
08:20he shows he's ready for the next level.
08:22If Pompey makes him look bad, takes him a distance in a sloppy fight,
08:25he shows that he's not quite ready to move up just yet.
08:28All right, let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape.
08:31At 20, Sheikah, get this, 12 years younger than Pompey.
08:35Three-inch height advantage for Sheikah.
08:37The weight almost even.
08:39Sheikah, give it a little leeway there, as you can see.
08:41One-inch difference in reach.
08:42And the key unified rules for this fight, no standing eight count,
08:46no three-knockdown rule.
08:47A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
08:49If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth round,
08:52it's a technical draw.
08:53If it happens after the end of round four, they go to the scorecard.
08:57So here at the Mark G. Edis Arena,
08:59we're ready for a scheduled 10-round bout
09:01between Omar Sheikah and Kevin Pompey.

10:04All right, fans, here we go
10:07with a super middleweight special attraction
10:09scheduled 10 rounds of boxing.
10:13Introducing to you first on my left,

10:2615 losses and three draws.
10:29He has 12 wins coming by way of knockout.
10:31Here is the durable contender
10:33known as the Troy Tiger.
10:36Introducing Kevin Pompey.
10:43And his opponent across the ring on my right,
10:46fighting out of the red corner
10:47in this 10-round attraction.
10:49Entering the ring,
10:50wearing black trunks with white lettering,
10:52fighting out of Patterson, New Jersey.
10:55His weight, 169 pounds.
10:58His fine record stands at 17 wins,
11:01one loss with 12 wins coming by way of knockout.
11:05He is ranked the IBF number five,
11:07super middleweight contender in the world.
11:10They call him the pride of Palestine.
11:13And Patterson introducing Omar Sheikah.
11:18Once again, a referee in charge,
11:23Tony Orlando now to give instructions,
11:2510 rounds of boxing schedule.
11:28Okay, gentlemen,
11:29you received my instructions,
11:31therefore I expect a clean, professional bout.
11:34Is that clearly understood?
11:35Yes, sir.
11:35Listen to my commands.
11:37I want you to shake hands,
11:38touch gloves,
11:39go back to your corner.
11:39Go, sit up.
11:40Bobby Keyes to victory.
11:49Well, Omar Sheikah,
11:49he's got to land those heavy shots early
11:51and he's got to land them off
11:52and break down Kevin Pompey.
11:54And for reverse side,
11:54that is Pompey has to make Sheikah miss
11:57and counterpunch very well,
11:58take him into the rounds.
12:01This is scheduled for 10 super middleweights,
12:04as you saw on the tail of the tape.
12:07Sheikah pound over.
12:08Sheikah very aggressive.
12:11He is terrifically strong,
12:14big banger,
12:15and has a solid left hook.
12:16Pompey more of a boxer,
12:18counterpuncher.
12:19Sheikah told us Pompey is a warrior.
12:21He's fought just about everybody.
12:23He has respect for him,
12:24but he said he'll be fighting to survive.
12:26He'll feel my power.
12:28There's certainly no quit in Kevin Pompey.
12:30He'll fight anybody,
12:31anywhere,
12:31anytime he doesn't mind.
12:33Just put your name on a contract.
12:34Let's go.
12:35Pompey a teacher's aide
12:36when he's not fighting in Troy, New York.
12:38Okay, middle school up there.
12:41He found out about this fight
12:42about a week and a half,
12:43two weeks ago.
12:44Said he turned it down twice
12:45before finally saying okay.
12:46When I asked him why,
12:48he gave in.
12:49He said,
12:49because I'm adventurous.
12:52I think they might have made it worth his while as well.
12:55Yeah,
12:55you can pay a few bills with this,
12:56you know.
12:56I think dollar signs may have had something to do with it.
13:00At one time,
13:01he was also a semi-pro football player
13:03in the New England Patriots Farm Club,
13:06and they said he was a good quarterback.
13:08Beautiful right hand and left hook by Sheikah.
13:11He is strong,
13:12very determined,
13:13and purposeful.
13:14Sheikah moving in.
13:16Boy,
13:17he is a slugger,
13:17but Pompey is,
13:19you know,
13:19no quitting him as well.
13:21As Sheikah pointed out,
13:22the guy is a warrior.
13:24But he's putting,
13:24she was putting in everything he's got
13:26into these punches.
13:27I mean,
13:27these are not feel-out punches,
13:29not first-round punches.
13:30These are middle-of-the-fight punches.
13:31And if Sheikah gets an opponent in trouble,
13:33he is a terrific finisher.
13:36Yeah,
13:36that's the sheet on him,
13:38that he can finish.
13:38Once you get in trouble,
13:39he knows how to close the door.
13:41You know,
13:41he started his training
13:42and works out of the Luke Costello Sportsman Club in Patterson,
13:45where I first started boxing in 1972.
13:47Yeah,
13:48the legendary comedian
13:49who teamed up with Bud Abbott
13:50was not a bad fighter,
13:51Luke Costello.
13:54Ooh,
13:54look at that.
13:55Kevin Pompey
13:56has fought most of his career
13:58at 147,
13:59the last few fights,
14:00moving way up to 168.
14:02These are vicious left hooks to the ribs by Sheikah.
14:05These are damaging punches,
14:06no question about it.
14:07This is punishment.
14:08You can see he's just so strong.
14:10He's got such an arsenal in both hands,
14:12very heavy-handed.
14:13He is committed to every shot he throws.
14:15Yeah,
14:15he doesn't,
14:16he's not throwing any feel-out punches.
14:19Everything is meant to hit something and hurt.
14:22Pompey said he's got to fight intelligently,
14:24not let Sheikah take control,
14:26make him pay when he misses,
14:27and watch out for that big punch the left took.
14:30But that's easier said than done
14:32against a powerful guy like Sheikah.
14:35Great right hand by Sheikah
14:39that got through the glove.
14:41He sent everything up off the jab,
14:43though.
14:43He's been to school.
14:46Oh,
14:46these are solid shots,
14:48doubling up on the left.
14:49He did an over and under
14:51as opposed to an under and over,
14:52and he threw it well.
14:53And landed it well.
14:54Oh,
14:54low,
14:54low,
14:55low there by Pompey,
14:56but Orlando cautioning him
14:58trying to keep him up.
15:02Final seconds of the opening round.
15:06Oh,
15:06it's a pretty good right,
15:07right before the battle by Pompey.
15:10Right on the net.
15:11Sheikah very convincing in that first round.
15:14He convinced me.
15:14He's serious.
15:15Sheikah the aggressor here.
15:31He loves to come in with combinations.
15:34There is a beautiful right hand
15:35after an uppercut and a hook.
15:36He stayed on top of Pompey,
15:38and then he eventually let him go.
15:39But he is the aggressor.
15:40He's going to put the pressure on
15:41and keep the power punches in.
15:44He also never,
15:45never neglects the body.
15:47Here's the left hook to the head
15:48and the body.
15:49I talked about a little bit ago
15:50and over and under as opposed to
15:51an under and over.
15:52Beautiful double left hook.
16:01You hear a lot of that here in
16:02Atlantic City over under.
16:06Here we go around to along with
16:08the left hooks to the body.
16:09Sheikah also connecting several
16:10times around one with straight
16:11rights to Pompey's head.
16:14Let's see if the punishment
16:16rages on.
16:19You can also see the difference
16:20in size of these two men.
16:21Popeye started as a legitimate
16:23welterweight and he's grown up
16:25with pounds but not in body.
16:26I mean he still looks like a
16:28welterweight.
16:28The other guy looks much bigger.
16:30He looks like a quarterback.
16:31That's what he looks like without
16:32the equipment.
16:33As you said football his first
16:35love he said if he had his
16:37brothers he'd be a football
16:38play he may be thinking about
16:39that now he can use some of the
16:40equipment to keep the bouncing
16:42thudding punches off his head
16:44right now.
16:44Pompey was very candid in the
16:45interviews.
16:46He said listen I know they look
16:47at me as a journeyman just a
16:48trial horse that they got to get
16:49through and do their thing.
16:50I'm an underdog.
16:50I was brought in here as a
16:52sacrificial lamb.
16:52He said but I know I also have to
16:54weather a terrible onslaught in the
16:56first three or four rounds if I'm
16:57going to have a chance to win it.
16:58Well he almost lost his balance
16:59there.
17:00Did Pompey as he's backed against
17:01the ropes and gets pummeled here.
17:03Down he goes.
17:04Big right hand put him down.
17:06He's got to the top of the
17:07three.
17:07That right hand was not only
17:08quick but it was just so powerful
17:09he drove him to the floor.
17:11Well I think those punches to the
17:12body before really set him out
17:14Bobby.
17:14There was two or three thumping
17:15body shots.
17:16I mean clear body shots.
17:17These are sledgehammer shots by
17:19Sheikah.
17:20So the first knockdown of the
17:21fight it comes in the second round.
17:22He puts Pompey off balance again.
17:24And he is opening up pouring it
17:27off.
17:27This could be a matter of
17:29moments.
17:29Down again.
17:30The punches are too heavy and
17:32they're too much.
17:33There's no free knockdown rule.
17:34Five.
17:35Six.
17:35Seven.
17:36Eight.
17:36So he's down 58 seconds in the
17:39round two then a minute 23 in the
17:41round two.
17:41If he goes down again Tony
17:43Orlando's a very good and confident
17:44referee he will stop the strike.
17:45Yeah he may be academic anyway as
17:47far as the rules.
17:48I think he's looking at him right
17:49now.
17:49If he stopped along the
17:52ropes and gets pummeled this
17:53referee is going to move in.
17:54Pompey just looking to survive
17:56the round.
17:57Minute ten.
17:58Got a long way to go.
17:59Right above us.
18:00He's getting drilled.
18:01Oh what a right hand.
18:03Look at the referee.
18:03Just about to bounce in.
18:04It's very very close to being
18:06over folks.
18:06Pompey in all kinds of desperate
18:09trouble here.
18:12And he's got almost a minute to
18:13go on the round.
18:14Body shots and then upstairs
18:16pummeling Pompey.
18:18Tony Orlando looking in very
18:21closely.
18:22This could be over very soon.
18:24What's he waiting for?
18:26Oh come on.
18:27He's getting destroyed.
18:28What's he waiting for?
18:30Pompey has not really thrown a
18:31punch back in quite some time.
18:33It can't go much longer.
18:34He can't even stand.
18:35His legs are totally rubbery.
18:37There he fired a hook but it was
18:39really not much.
18:40How does this fight continue?
18:41You've got to stop this fight.
18:43He's been down twice.
18:44He has no chance.
18:46And he's getting pumped.
18:47And he's an old guy.
18:48He's got tremendous heart.
18:50Guts though.
18:51Hanging in there.
18:52Oh what a right hook by Sheikah.
18:54And he continues to drill.
18:56If it wasn't for that last combination
18:59backed by Pompey.
19:00I'll tell you right now Tony Orlando
19:02put his left shoulder in.
19:03He's going to stop.
19:04Pompey fighting back against the crowd
19:06around.
19:07At the foul.
19:09Oh you talk about resolve.
19:11He can barely make it to the stool.
19:13There's no quitting him, Steve.
19:15All right.
19:16Are you all right?
19:17Are you all right?
19:18Do you want to continue?
19:19Yes, we do.
19:20He doesn't start defending himself a lot.
19:22Sounds good.
19:23All right.
19:24Defend yourself, man.
19:25He is.
19:26The referee's in there.
19:27You're right.
19:28I know.
19:29I like to be hands out.
19:30If you want to go more, let's go more.
19:32You can't stand though.
19:33Let him punch you though.
19:36We're going to take a look at those knockdowns.
19:38Omar Sheikah is so strong that
19:40and his power on his shots.
19:41There he almost gets Pompey off his feet.
19:44But here he's just banging with all 150 some odd pounds
19:48and just firing it in there.
19:50Now that right hand was on the shoulder more
19:52than it was on the job.
19:53It was so strong he just drove him to the floor.
19:56The second knockdown he was started to off on him
19:58and catch him clean on top of the head.
20:00There beautiful right hand in the temple.
20:02Pompey was driven to the floor once again.
20:04That shot much more significant than the first right hand.
20:07Here we go.
20:08Into round three.
20:09Tony Orlando ducked into the Pompey quarter
20:11and advised Pompey to protect him.
20:13That's pretty good advice.
20:16Up.
20:17He stumbles but doesn't go down.
20:19It looked like half a slip.
20:21Off balance Pompey but Sheikah doesn't let up.
20:25Relentless attack.
20:26Nice left hook landed by Pompey.
20:28Did actually back shake up a little bit.
20:29But he just doesn't have the guns.
20:31He's not a one punch knockout artist.
20:32Almost everything Pompey throws is getting through.
20:35Well they say he can finish and that's what he almost did last time but didn't.
20:39Two knockdowns in the last round.
20:41He should have finished that round off.
20:43Well I'll tell you he took a lot of energy to put on that performance in round two by Sheikah.
20:47So he's gonna have to settle down now and harness his energy if this fight gets past another round or two.
20:53Yeah Pompey just hoping that Sheikah punched himself out.
20:59But probably not the case.
21:01Sheikah in tremendous condition.
21:0222 years old very strong very young.
21:12I'll tell you what Pompey not not on solid legs.
21:16You know I'll tell you how much there's no Quentin Pompey.
21:18He was in the corner and the referee said if you get in trouble like that again I'm gonna have to stop.
21:22But do you want to continue.
21:23He said sounds good to me.
21:25Oh look at him.
21:26He's been doing the fighting this round.
21:28Look at him.
21:29He's the guy that's taking the beating yet he's the one who's doing the punching.
21:31So she could take a little breather and get this gas tank to fill up again.
21:37Sheikah in his mind knows he can have his way at any moment here.
21:41But Pompey says otherwise as he answers back with a combination to the head.
21:46Pompey is boxing a little smarter now mostly because Sheikah stopped throwing those big bombs.
21:51He's letting him get off first.
21:53Booming shots here by Omar Sheikah but a left hook counterpunch by Pompey.
21:58Right on the jaw.
22:00Oh there's a heavy right hand by Sheikah right on the temple.
22:07That was a beautiful right hand.
22:08He slipped the jab and fired a right hand over it and caught Pompey cleanly in the jaw.
22:12Overhand right.
22:13Right on target.
22:14Sheikah get a little desperate with those uppercuts.
22:17He shouldn't throw them that far away.
22:19He's got to set it up.
22:20He can't just fire from way out there and hit those heavy those uppercuts.
22:26Sheikah looks tired.
22:27He just looks like hey I had a big round.
22:29Let me take a little take a breather here before I start which has gotten Pompey brave.
22:34What's amazing is that Pompey's got that much left to be firing with that steam that he's doing.
22:41Pompey did a big beating.
22:42Yeah just threw a nice triple left hook.
22:43Two to the head one to the body and landed cleanly.
22:45But again he's not the big puncher that Sheikah is.
22:48And be mindful Pompey 12 years older than Sheikah.
23:02Pompey landing with that left.
23:03Those uppercuts not getting through.
23:05And a counter.
23:06Oh.
23:07Sheikah at the bell.
23:09Interesting.
23:10He might have won that round.
23:11He really worked the round well.
23:13He won that round Bobby.
23:14He worked.
23:15You heard him with that right hand.
23:16He worked.
23:17You got more water in there.
23:18All right.
23:19You have the same thing.
23:20You got to be boxing.
23:21That was beautiful.
23:22That was beautiful.
23:23Make some deep breaths.
23:24You see something in there.
23:29Now we start working the body.
23:34You cannot stand up in front of them though.
23:36Don't stand up straight in front of them.
23:38You're still not bending your knees.
23:39You're still not getting down low.
23:41You're trying to get the rhythm.
23:42All right.
23:43Stay focused Kevin.
23:44That was beautiful.
23:45That was beautiful.
23:46Ending round Kevin Pompey shows you that he is no quit in him.
23:59There's a nice under and over left hook.
24:01An uppercut.
24:02A few more combinations.
24:03Shaker responds.
24:04Pompey fires right back and rocks.
24:06Shaker with a nice under and over left uppercut right hand.
24:10So here we go into round number four.
24:13Scheduled for ten.
24:14Super middleweights.
24:15Things getting most interesting here.
24:17Beautiful right handers now by Pompey.
24:19But Shaker's got some of that energy tank back.
24:21Oh he's got it back.
24:22He's mad.
24:23Yeah.
24:24He got it back.
24:25He said hold it.
24:26I was just filling up.
24:27Now we resume where we were before.
24:29Yeah.
24:30For some reason Shaker taking off the last round.
24:32Perhaps punching himself out over the first few rounds.
24:35And Pompey able to take advantage and probably won the third.
24:41Shaker says to himself.
24:43I've had enough.
24:44Let's go back to it.
24:49All right.
24:50Shaker goes to the next round.
24:52Solid left.
24:53Took but it was blocked by the glove of Shaker.
24:58Combination to the head the left made it.
25:02The right was blocked.
25:04By Shaker.
25:06Now she could try to come in from underneath.
25:09But being blocked by Pompey.
25:12Page is still staying a little slower than the first two rounds.
25:15tank may not be as big be as refueled as we have thought and
25:19meanwhile Pompey may be gaining energy boy we thought this thing was over in the
25:26second row and Pompey went down twice 58 seconds in a minute 23 we were seconds
25:32away had he not thrown a combination the referee had his shoulder in there to
25:36stop it and Pompey fired off there's a left hook to the neck by Pompey that
25:42landed Pompey now the aggressor roles have reversed just a little bit now
25:49Sheikah is loading up which could be somewhat dangerous he's telegraphing his
25:53punches and let's see if Pompey can take advantage he's been loading up with that
25:57right hand and letting his left way low look at look at the way he holds his left
26:03way down there that of course display yes absolutely it also displays that he
26:07doesn't have respect for Pompey's answers
26:24Pompey continuing to press the action and make Omar Sheikah back up yeah Pompey
26:29since the last round dictating the pace what a turnaround Sheikah is nowhere near
26:34has affected going backwards as he is coming forward he's a forward-minded
26:37offensive-minded fighter
26:38Sheikah has split with the train oh what a left and a right off the head by Pompey
26:45Sheikah splitting with famous trainer Kevin Rooney perhaps that has something to do with
26:50Oh a straight right right on the chest by Pompey another round being won by Pompey final seconds
26:59There's another straight right you know Pompey's landed a lot of shots in this room and there's the bell to end round four
27:09Let's go over to Jim Gray Jim all right thank you very much Steve coming up in the next bout we've got Marco Barrera you were
27:16supposed to fight Marco against Vasquez however that fight did not come off are
27:21you disappointed well this opponent is very hard I come to win if I working very
27:26hard for this fight I working in central seminar for me to look for this fight all
27:30right Gladys Rose is gonna help us out a little bit interpreting what was the end of
27:34that he would say that he has worked very hard that this fight and he's been working at a
27:39central to me which is in tomorrow at a very high altitude what about his
27:44opponent tonight Marin does he know much about him
27:47I said come on head back is it was just a sister for you in English I don't know what
27:54happened with change the river because I am working for fight with basket but wait 30 days
28:00between the fight the senhor Ricardo Maldonado call me that he say that I got to fight with
28:06pastor Martin with from Argentina all right we look forward to that fight and we look forward to
28:12Vasquez if we can get that together they're fighting out in the ring Steve all right Jim reverse
28:16translations first I've ever seen that rounds three and four the young contender she can learn that the
28:22much-traveled veteran Kevin Pompey will not be intimidated at around five no Kevin Pompey is not
28:28going to go quietly good night he he came to fight he got this fight on short notice and he looks good
28:34right now winless in his last six fights oh five and oh what a right hand spun him around yep Sheikah out of
28:42nowhere this is another sequence of shake on loads all the rest of that gas tank what happens if Pompey
28:49survives okay he's been loading up back comes Pompey with a right hand he works to his left well he did not
29:01follow that great right hand up with the effectiveness he had earlier on so he certainly is not fighting in
29:07full speed the vicious nature which he used earlier to try and close the show is not there right now or the
29:13energy is not there speaking of closing the show this fight could have been stopped in the second round and
29:18nobody would have complained about you know and if you're looking at just the people that score by
29:22rounds this fights two rounds to two rounds but by points of course shake his head by virtue of that
29:27big big second round yeah that may have been a 10-7 I gave it 10-7 for such a beating so that makes it 38 to
29:3430-6 but by rounds two to two halfway through round five scheduled for 10
29:47like Sheikah looking to dig the right uppercut to the body and gets a warning from Orlando to keep the punches
29:53up the combination by Pompey the left landed this fight will really get interesting we get past the
30:01fifth or sixth round that will really start to tell as the fight goes on just what kind of shape shake
30:07is in just what kind of experience factor that Pompey has he's all over Sheikah back comes Sheikah but
30:14Pompey with a terrific flurry there this is some exchange now right uppercut by Pompey right to the
30:22chin of Sheikah and that sent him back and Sheikah comes back well we've got some ebb and flow going here
30:28yeah you're left with the thought that as long as things are going his way he's a hell of an
30:34offensive fighter Sheikah but when he gets on the defensive a lot to be desired here because this
30:38old guy is taking him to the cleaners Pompey is landing combinations look at that landed again with
30:44the right hand he just seems to be getting stronger as this fight goes on
30:49let him go let him go let him go let him go step back please okay terrific recuperative powers by the
31:03veteran Kevin Pompey 34 out of Troy New York another one in this gift for Pompey
31:10in the mouthpiece you know no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no relax relax relax
31:26relax I heard him relax okay okay okay now that that round there you heard him and you were you
31:30know you don't want to run out of gas right now what happened Sheikah opened up this round with a
31:33beautiful right hand and didn't quite follow up the way he did in the second round but that right hand
31:38had Pompey in trouble had him very wobbly but Pompey recovered very quickly Sheikah couldn't keep this
31:44thing on him and Pompey come back with the combinations not as big a puncher but a lot more of them
31:49to the head and body there five six seven shots followed up with two more and again another right
31:54hand and a left hook this kid will not quit and that was a lot of points being built up Bobby a lot of
32:00points so I gave that round of Pompey again three rounds two I had that round for Sheikah I thought
32:06he was going to be strong early and I don't think probably did quite enough to steal the round back
32:10halfway through this bout it looks like referee Tony Orlando made the right decision not to stop the
32:15fight back in round two very interesting bout let's get your unofficial scores at the halfway point I got
32:23to shake ahead 47 to 46. Well you have it awfully tight of course that second round was probably a
32:2810-7 round here Sheikah really opening up on Pompey as a wicked right hook another right hook but back
32:35comes Pompey with the left hook Pompey is doing something very cute Steve what he's doing is
32:40blocking he's doing his best to block the right hand and counter with the left hook normally you
32:44counter right hand with the right hand this is not an orthodox counter but very effective
32:48Tony Orlando asking Pompey are you okay he says yeah I'm all right and he gets right back to it
32:53he got in a lot of good right hands just then low low low left hand there by Pompey well he's one gutty
33:01fighter and he's taken a lot but he's also dishing it out Pompey in the red look at this shoe shine on
33:08the face we check the online scoring it's close at home Pompey ahead after uh I have him same three to
33:18two I have it three to the other way big right hand by Shaker Pompey took that very well but it
33:23looked like it hurt him good fans gave uh rounds three four and five to Pompey yeah I did too because
33:29of that big big rally off the ropes I mean he must have hit him 20 good shots but Shaker looks like
33:37he's back a little bit better than in the past uh rounds he's gotten him in trouble now two or three
33:42times there you go he's he's punching with a much more authority and the bigger the difference is
33:48Pompey lands but Chica's punch is so much more powerful big difference here was round two had to be a
33:5810 8 or 10 7 round in favor of Sheikah two knockdowns usually makes it 10 7 round combination to the
34:05head but slithered off the face of Chica so Bobby what do you got in points good right hand by Pompey
34:11points out of 48 45 for Shaker boy Pompey digs to the ribs with that left hook that punch was blocked
34:21it looked good but it was blocked by the left glove of Pompey back comes Pompey he is some counter puncher
34:27and he can take it he's absorbed a lot of heat there's a straight right hand off the combination
34:33by Pompey he threw a nice left uppercut and a right hand over the top squaring the button of Shaker
34:38Shaker's legs are dead I mean this guy is just walking around flat footed like he has two irons in
34:44his feet he has no bounce in his legs oh a straight right hand right on the nose by Kevin Pompey
34:55watch your head watch your head oh oh oh oh shots are just so big and so heavy big finish there by Sheikah
35:11the mouthpiece that was good that was good I want you to throw the ring I want you to double the hook
35:24though you still didn't double the hook I want you to double the hook I know he takes a punch don't worry
35:30about it he talked about Shaker's right hand with Pompey he's getting his home too throws a nice jab out
35:37there bang right hand right on the nose being very effective again not the punch of the cheek is
35:45Shaker will not be denied though he's gonna get his pound of flesh as well there's a nice right hand down the middle
35:50not as effective as it was earlier doesn't have quite the steam on there's a roundhouse that right hand much better
35:58got the adrenaline flowing more punches to follow just as the round close
36:02to follow Omar Sheikah has been passed the fourth round only once in the last six fights as we had
36:13around seven and he lost that fight so he could have a stamina problem
36:19all right that corner man said he must have a job iron you can take this
36:24and the fighter said man that guy can take a punch yes Sheikah's new corner Al Velasquez
36:33once again we see a fighter taking a fight on short notice and comes in uh seemingly very prepared and
36:40ready to go at it uh the only explanation I can have this guy must stay prepared you know yeah a lot of
36:46guys do that a lot of guys a lot of guys work out regularly just ready to go and he's he's starting to be
36:52considered somewhat of an opponent journeyman so he stays ready when the call comes the number's
36:57right he does what he has to you got to slick him on his foot yeah let's hope we don't have a
37:01uh recurrence of what we had in atlantic city uh back in the winter when some water gets on the
37:07advertisements it gets slick well and also they were just painting this as uh as we walked in
37:13early this afternoon they were still painting it so i was pretty wet at first i thought he was doing a
37:17michael jackson mutation a little slide he's got two gloves on not one okay round seven
37:26he's got that habit of extending his arms out too for a second it must be his arms are cramping up
37:32or he's getting a little stiff he's an old guy and uh when i see him doing that
37:38what would you do well you can't get to him in time okay he does it from pretty far away oh there's
37:45a solid right cross yeah was that a bashing right cross by pompey right upside the head right but you
37:52understand he doesn't have the power it's more of an arm shot than a shake-up punch a shaker right hand
37:56is being turned in right leg right hip ball firing in his back pumping not that big a puncher but
38:03throwing chris combinations it doesn't seem to have that much impact on uh shake yeah but i'm
38:08what i'm going back to the top of the show when bobby said listen this is a fight where this guy's got
38:12to show us what he's got he's been going with easy guys now let's see what he's got with a veteran
38:17if he doesn't look good well look what's happening look what's happening still he's getting hit by
38:21everything that pompey's throwing and it's pompey imagine you're fighting a real good fighter getting in
38:27those right hand shots by a guy who is supposed to be a washed up fighter yeah and and a blown up
38:33welterweight on top right and 12 years older so i mean if he's landing those shots imagine a real cannon
38:39look at that oh look a right hand there overhand right by kevin pompey that rattles sheikah
38:53and we head for the foul and round seven there's that thing he does again pump it
39:10all right let's uh get it over to bobby ches for a look via the telestream
39:16one of the better punches on the inside here you see shorter fighter okay shorter fighter pompey
39:28gets a taller man he's got all the leverage in the world for this uppercut right up on this one
39:33of the most effective punches in the world as we roll the tape this is just a beautiful shot on the
39:38inside what he should have come back what was a left hook right behind that but that is how you work
39:42on the inside long time friend billy growick in the ear of kevin pompey they came up together in the
40:07in the air of kevin pompey amateurs they're about the same age we will uh a sense of urgency in that
40:12omar sheikah point around eight and what a bounce back situation here for the man in red veteran kevin
40:20pompey he took this fight on short notice he's the heaviest he's ever been in his career but he is
40:27showing good stamina here pompey and chico comes in here with his great reputation being a finisher
40:32meanwhile didn't finish in the second round and all of a sudden he is showing a leaky defense it's
40:37leaking right hands what you have to wonder is if you've got a fighter who punches as good as sheikah
40:43punching back at sheikah what will happen here comes sheikah non-stop attack very aggressively pouring
40:49it on and tony orlando steps in and pompey can't believe it pompey very upset
40:56i'll tell you what i'll tell you too many punches
41:02that was interesting come on come on
41:06too many punches
41:07so tony orlando hearing it from the crowd hearing it from the crowd pompey and his corner
41:23extremely upset that they stopped the fight based on what had happened earlier
41:29well you know what steve based on what happened in the second round based on the fact that he survived
41:33triple that onslaught i think tony orlando made a judgmental error i think he's a great referee i
41:40have a lot of respect for him i think based on what we've shown pompey can take and come back from
41:44he has to withstand he has to absorb he has to allow the bigger heavier man to unload and come
41:50back and i really think that that was a short stoppage damn i think if it was going to be a stoppage
41:56one of the second round was justified they should have stopped but he was taking me but not this one
41:59that i could live with i'm not going to question it because i thought he should have stopped it in the
42:03second round so i'm not going to question well we're going to take a look at it pompey is on the
42:11ropes he's got his back to the rope shaker comes in stronger man now those shots went real clean two of
42:17those were really clean three and four and five landed a lot of this stuff though misses some of this stuff
42:23here is more show than go at the same time pompey did not tony orlando's credit fire back he needed to
42:32fire back not just cover look at it from another angle pompey setting his guy up i believe he came out with
42:39this on his mind he's beaten his guy enough worked him worked his body worked his jaw few of these shots
42:46are very clean but they're not the same big shots in the second round i had a better feeling about the
42:51second round if you were to stop it than i did here pompey showed that he could take this kind of
42:57punishment and come back and i don't think that was as bad as the second round
43:02an overhead last look at it you see that right hand doesn't hit
43:07they don't really catch him that one does down the middle that one does
43:12every other right hand seems to catch it but a few of those just are swinging shots punching through
43:16the gloves not real effective shots not real clean shots but again pompey did not punch back and you
43:24know what is key it may have been an unpopular decision tony orlando's a very good referee he's
43:29right there on top of the action and i've got to believe he made the right ball let's go to jimmy
43:34lennon with his call ladies and gentlemen with the time of 44 seconds in round number eight our
43:40referee in charge stops the contest the winner by way of technical knockout the pride of palestine and
43:48patterson omar shika
43:5344 seconds round eight tko for omar shika
43:57but a lot more compelling and dramatic than anticipated
44:04by shika and by the fans well coming up next let's hope we have the same terrific action
44:11championship action wbo junior featherweight title at stake
44:16we go behind the scenes into the dressing room of marco antonio verreira the champion relentless
44:21fighter comes off the impressive second round tko over paul lloyd in lloyd's backyard of england
44:27back in april to retain the title you may recall lloyd provided some difficulty for prince nassim
44:32hamed but he was no trouble for barrera tonight barrera's 14th world title fight as he takes on
44:39relatively unknown pastor marin we're ready for post fight reaction from our last bout this should be
44:47interesting let's go to the fight doctor ferdy pacheco in the ring ferdy pedal pedal pedal that
44:54fight much harder than that it looked in the second round you think he should have been stopped well
44:58the second round he um i exploded on him maybe a little bit too much but he surprised me a lot
45:03he was a tough fighter coming in he fought five tough ranked guys in the world and they all took
45:07him decision so my goal was to stop him and come in but he was a lot stronger than i thought he could
45:11take a very good punch i give a lot of credit to him he's a warrior fighter and i need his kind of
45:15experience moving on to a world title fight did you kind of run out of gas after the second round for the
45:20third and fourth and fifth he took the round the rounds one after the other well i knew we now got
45:25a little over punch myself but i'm in great shape i know i had 10 rounds i tried to take him out too
45:29early i know i had a whole night so so i know he's a tough fighter he's gonna keep coming so i just let
45:35him build his confidence up once he got close and when i had him hurt i just started got my win back
45:40with the beginning of the round kevin hate to say it but he was gonna go anyway buddy all right well
45:44the that i'm sure we're gonna have a different opinion over here but but come in here a second
45:51you you you deserve to be right in here get that stoppage you screamed and hollered no yeah you didn't
45:57think he should have been stopped no because when he hit me the first in the earlier rounds that was
46:01even more than that you know i'm saying he had me on queer street and i got myself back together
46:06right there he didn't hurt me at all you know it was like nice bludgeoning punch you know hit me
46:10you know i'm trying to come back you know right when i was going to throw a hook the referee comes
46:14and grabs me you know what i'm saying all right so you thought you could continue on did you think
46:18you had a chance of winning the fight it was pretty close but i was hit in the scoring i was
46:22i was after happy you come on i'm fighting i'm fighting i'm fighting i'm biased i'm biased to myself
46:29you know what i'm saying where's orlando hey hey can you talk to us a second uh we're in the middle of
46:34a heated dispute here between two guys we thought the the second round you could have stopped it without
46:39any problem he did a great job but but but but yes but did you think that last round should have
46:44been stopped because he claims he's not really good i'll tell you something i almost stopped it in the
46:49third was at the second round whatever but my main job is the safety of the boxer uh he kept coming
46:55back and i appreciated that i let him continue many times when he got hit with some good punches
46:59but he wanted to pass a defense he got hit with about eight to ten shots how far do you let it go
47:04i'd rather him come back and fight another day and i congratulate him all right let's turn around
47:09but with this miracle of of of here let's let's take a look at round two this is one i thought it
47:14should have been stopped here's a first night down now all right all right talk to us well i've seen
47:20him right to to rope i've seen i had him hurt so i was going for the finish i told you i'm a terrific
47:23finisher but he was a virtual fighter he could take a good punch so i knew that i had to throw more
47:28combination punches than one punch now that one was high high on the shot now the second one you
47:32take it probably it were you conscious of what was very conscious take the look i knew he was coming
47:38out tell us tell us i knew he was going to come wide with one shot and then when he came wide with
47:42the one shot i was looking for i was going to counter real real hard with him waiting waiting my time
47:47now that that was a very good knockdown it was not there but following that then he took the
47:53the punishment that we thought you should have stopped the fight there after two knockdowns yes i was very
47:57close matter of fact i couldn't come i couldn't come closer to pulling the trigger i did at that
48:02time but he came back he was responsive he was that we had we've had a damn good fight here this
48:07hey we can't we can't complain all right end of the fight let's go let's take a look at this i had my
48:13energy i was going to just explode it exposed well he was taking good clean punches right there
48:17referee wouldn't have stopped it he was going to the corner he's ready to go he had his hands down
48:21referee saved your life and the fight continues the fight continues but nonetheless but nonetheless
48:32the winner is sheikah and we go back to steve albert at ringside as the argument continues all
48:38right thank you uh thanks very much ferdy through seven the judges had it uh for sheikah all the way 67
48:4464 67 65 and 68 63 and round two was scored by two judges 10 8 by one judge 10 7 but she can make it
48:54academic in round eight well i had it 67 64 so i agree with one of the judges i believe it was uh
