The hour, which features a scene in which a rape kit is administered, was inspired by Christine Blasey Ford's testimony against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, showrunner Krista Vernoff and writer Elisabeth Finch say.

00:00Dr. Krebs asked us to all stand here. Do we know why?
00:03It's just that a patient needs us. She needs all of us.
00:07Thursday night's Grey's Anatomy explored consent with one of the ABC medical drama's
00:12most powerful episodes ever. The hour-long episode featured one of the most in-depth
00:16depictions of precisely how a rape kit is administered. However, the extended scenes
00:20were met with pushback from ABC's Standards and Practices department. But creator Shonda
00:25Rimes didn't take no for an answer. Showrunner Krista Vernoff and writer Elizabeth Finch
00:29revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the notes they received from Standards and
00:33Practices on the episode were,
00:34Please don't show any fluid on the q-tips and please don't show any body fluids under the blue lights.
00:39But according to Vernoff, Rimes wrote back a pretty passionate response declining the notes.
00:44In a rare and surprising decision, Standards and Practices reversed its stance and saw the
00:48executive who flagged the scenes actually join the women who lined the hallway in support of a rape
00:53victim as she was carted off to surgery in the episode. The powerful wall of women scene
00:57also featured many Grey's Anatomy writers and Shondaland executives.
01:00The episode came together after star Camilla Luddington dialed up Vernoff the day of the Brett Kavanaugh
01:10hearings and suggested that her character Joe be the product of rape. The series was already
01:14plotting to introduce Joe's biological mother who, as Grey's die-hard fans recall, abandoned her at a fire station.
01:21Meanwhile, Vernoff herself had also felt inspired by Christine Blasey Ford's testimony against Kavanaugh
01:28to address consent on the drama. For the full interview with the showrunner and the writer, head to THR.com.
01:33Until next time, for The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor.
