Captain Marvel, the first female-led superhero pick from Marvel Studios and Disney,
00:04
is expected to continue kicking butt in its second weekend at the North American
00:07
box office, with tracking suggesting it will pull in $60 to $70 million.
00:11
The Brie Larson-led film has already soared past the $500 million mark in worldwide
00:16
ticket sales, including nearly $190 million in the U.S. through Wednesday.
00:20
So you'd be justified in feeling just the slightest bit sorry for the movie's opening
00:25
opposite the girl-powered tentpole this weekend. Those offerings include
00:28
Paramount's animated family pic Wonder Park, CBS film's teen drama Five Feet Apart
00:34
and Focus features sci-fi adventure Captive State.
00:38
Wonder Park is tracking to debut in the $8 to $13 million range.
00:42
The story follows a young girl named June, played by Brianna Densky,
00:45
who discovers she's the only one who can save an amusement park full of magical rides
00:49
and talking animals. The star-centered voice cast also features Matthew Broderick,
00:53
Jennifer Garner, Kenan Thompson, Ken Hudson-Campbell, Ken John, Mila Kunis and John Oliver.
00:58
Five Feet Apart is expected to debut anywhere from $6 to $10 million, as it remains unclear
01:03
if Captain Marvel will steal the attention of younger females. The film, which cost less
01:07
than $7 million to produce before marketing, follows Stella, played by Hayley Lee Richardson,
01:12
and Will, played by Cole Sprouse, two teenage cystic fibrosis patients who fall in love
01:16
but must remain a certain distance away from each other at all times due to their illness.
01:20
The film was directed by Justin Baldoni, who is better known for playing Rafael Solano
01:24
on CW's Jane the Virgin and, fun fact, Hayley Lee Richardson is engaged to Baldoni's
01:29
Jane co-star and on-screen nemesis, Brett Dyer.
01:32
Meanwhile, participant media in Amblin's Captive State is also opening everywhere and is
01:36
tracking to open to $3 million. The thriller, directed by Rupert Wyatt, stars John Goodman,
01:41
Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors, Machine Gun Kelly and Vera Farmiga and tells the story of a
01:46
young man who leads a rebellion against an alien race that has invaded Earth.
