00:00Hi, it's Grace from the Monmouthshire Beacon. I'm here today in St Thomas' Church in Monmouth and
00:06this building was one of the only buildings in an area which was severely affected by the flooding
00:12that wasn't affected. So I've spoken to Reverend Stuart today who was going to tell me a little
00:18bit more about it. I'm Reverend Stuart, one of the vicars in the Monmouth Martyrs Ministry area
00:24with my focus here at St Thomas' Church. This building during the awful flooding that we all
00:33were part of last week didn't flood at all. It really was quite incredible, locking the church up
00:43on Friday evening as we always do and then just going home like everybody else in the area and
00:51waking up to knocks on the door and being taken away to safety as I walked up the road. I looked
00:59back at the church like we all looked back at our homes and we didn't know what we were coming back
01:04to when we arrived back and we were able to get into church to see that we hadn't been affected. It
01:11really did feel as if it was a goodness and a grace from God because we can still keep our doors open
01:19as we do seven days a week and be that place for people to come for calm and for some peace at this
01:26time. Hold all of our weddings, our funerals that we do, those times that mark people's lives. We're seeing
01:35the devastation for so many around us. Everybody really is in our thoughts and in our prayers at this
01:41time. Well we don't have any sort of formal flood defences here when they built the church in the
01:491100s it's slightly raised up so whether or not that was part of the reason why we escaped any water
01:58coming into the building but we don't have any formal flood defences here other than the ground that
02:04we're built on.
