00:00Now to Bolivia, digital violence, an increasingly common form of aggression against children and adolescents,
00:06has been classified as a crime punishable by 3 to 15 years in prison.
00:11A recent study shows that nearly one-third of women in the country are affected.
00:16Our correspondent, Freddy Morales, gives us the details.
00:19Crimes related to human trafficking and smuggling, especially for the purpose of sexual exploitation,
00:26have increased in the country due to the widespread use of social media.
00:32Recruitment is the easiest thing that can happen, not only as a form of entertainment,
00:36when a child or teenager joins social media to view platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok,
00:42but especially when these teenage victims are looking for a job, how to earn money,
00:46and social media plays a fundamental role because behind those WhatsApp numbers,
00:50those Facebook posts, there are sexual exploiters, pimps, traffickers.
00:56A recent study involving the United Nations Agency for Combating Sexual Violence verified last year
01:04that the phenomenon is growing and spreading.
01:09We have discovered that 27% of women are victims of digital violence,
01:13that 22% of these victims are victims of recruitment for the trafficking and smuggling of adolescent women,
01:19girls, and boys as well.
01:20It has been discovered how violence through social media directly affects the economic lives of women.
01:29For example, posting deepfics or defaming a woman and uploading it to social media
01:34then impacts her chances of getting a job, her chances of accessing scholarships, and of getting promoted.
01:39The prosecutor's office has incorporated digital violence into its investigations and police work
01:50in connection with crimes related to pornography and sexual exploitation.
01:55Now we see someone invisible behind a cell phone, and the parent, even if they set the appropriate restrictions,
02:06these people exclusively disguised their identity to look like a teenager, a girl or boy,
02:12and achieved their goal, obtaining pornographic images, and then extorting these children and teenagers.
02:18And at the beginning of last September, the outgoing government enacted a law that adds five new crimes
02:29to the penal code related to this social phenomenon.
02:36This law penalizes those who produce, purchase, sell, or distribute.
02:40In other words, we are already providing broad protection in this area
02:44so that people are clearly aware that they cannot consume this type of material
02:48when children, teenage girls, and even women who are being extorted
02:52by the production of this type of material.
02:57The new legislation imposes penalties ranging from 3 to 15 years in prison
03:03for crimes related to digital violence,
03:06and the police have expanded their investigations into cybercrime
03:09to assist prosecutors in their work.
03:11The most common form of recruitment is the offer of work in the country and abroad,
03:15modeling, and romance.
