00:00Now we change topic. In Spain, three years after the death of Colombian youth, Brian Rios, in police custody, family members and activists demand justice. Our correspondent, Andres Flores, with more details.
00:13Brian Rios was Colombian and arrived in Spain with his family in search of a better life. In 2022, he was arrested by the local police in Ruby, in the province of Barcelona.
00:25He died in police custody, under circumstances that are still being investigated.
00:33He was arrested on the night of August 20, after attending a family barbecue celebration.
00:43He went out to buy beer. He didn't return. When we went to look for him, we found that he was being detained by the local police.
00:49At around 11.30 p.m. they took him to the Cap Mutual in Tarazza, where they gave him three doses of sedatives.
00:59And 30 minutes later, less than 30 minutes later, they transferred him to the Masostei Squadra police station, where he died around 4 o'clock a.m.
01:06During these three years, Juliana was accompanied by activists and lawyers. Together they made progress in the case, although there is still work to be done.
01:20At the beginning of the year, forensic doctors, nurses who were at the Cap, the Cap doctor, and the Masostei Squadra police were called to testify.
01:34From the platform, we are disappointed that the local police, who made the arrest, were never called to testify.
01:42At this point, the doctor is charged with medical negligence, and we are waiting for a trial date.
01:46Both family members and activists emphasize that this is a case of police racism, and insist on the need for justice to be done, and that migrant lives matter.
02:04The Justice for Brian Rios platform views these cases of police racism with great concern, and above all, the lack of transparency about what really happened.
02:13Why was Brian Rios arrested?
02:16This racial profiling that we have normalized in the arrest of migrants or racialized people, is a real danger to our lives.
02:23Migrant lives are in danger in police custody, and if there is no family or support network behind them, these cases go unpunished.
02:29These cases fall in impunity.
