00:00A total of 36 students and two lecturers from University Utara, Malaysia, UUM, who were
00:08stranded in the Hat Yai floods were successfully rescued on Thursday.
00:12In a Facebook post, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambri Abdul Qadir said the
00:18group is now safe and will be moved to a temporary accommodation centre before arrangements are
00:23made to bring them back to Malaysia.
00:26He also expressed his deepest appreciation and thanks to the Foreign Ministry, the Embassy
00:31of Malaysia in Thailand, the Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla, Thai authorities, local
00:37rescue teams and UUM management for ensuring the rescue operation was carried out safely.
00:44Earlier, 12 aid boats were mobilised by NGO partners to deliver food and basic necessities,
00:51but strong currents forced the boats to turn back for safety.
00:55All of the UUM participants were part of the Thai MYS Cultural Exchange Programme 2025 and
01:02were supposed to return last Saturday but were trapped at their hotel due to the severe flooding,
01:08which also left them without electricity or running water.
01:11UUM said conditions around the hotel were more critical than in other areas due to its proximity
01:17to the river, with water levels rising above the first floor, making access difficult for
01:22vehicles, including cars and lorries.
01:25It was reported that 36 UUM students and lecturers were facing food shortages, surviving on rationed
01:32rice porridge, while a student with thalassemia had run out of medication.
01:36This is a great day.
